You could use the alarm function. Be sure that the stations you wanted
are in your Favorites list, and then have the alarms trigger that
station at the desired time. You may need to adjust the settings for how
long the stream plays after the alarm goes off.

Pardon me for jumping in, but this has caught me out before so I'll
share the info. Please note that some forum members participate in the
forum via email, not via the forum interface on the web. As you might
guess from the formatting of his response, Michael is one of those
people.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, as the case may be), edits made to forum
posts do not get sent out to people reading the forum via email, and the
original post remains unchanged in their mailbox. So even though it's
clunky, you would need to do a new post for them to see it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.8 official release plans?

2014-01-28 Thread aubuti

I can see why someone would want 7.8 to be an official release, but
there's a high likelihood that that won't happen. So if there's
something you really like in 7.8, why not just download the current 7.8
(which is very stable) and run that? Save a copy of the download so you
can always go back to it if you need to reinstall or install it on a
different computer. You don't need to follow the forums closely, or at
all.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Lms 7.8?

2013-08-21 Thread aubuti

1. It depends on what version LMS and firmware you are running now. The
Boom and Receiver firmware haven't been updated for a long time, so
those won't change unless you're running a really old LMS. It looks like
the Controller firmware is changed from 7.7.2 to 7.8.0, but not the
Radio.

You can see which versions of firmware go with which versions of LMS
here: http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/. Note that the
names are as follows:

baby = Radio
fab4 = Touch
jive = Controller
receiver = Receiver
squeezebox2 = SB2 and SB3
squeezebox = SB (aka SB1)

2. Grab the latest nightly

Before you get too far with this it may be a good idea to find out at
what level the Sony is declaring the file type as unsupported. That is,
is the Sony looking at the contents of the file, or only the name? If
it's the latter, then I don't think what you're proposing will work.

Here's a test you can do. Take a copy of a WAV file, rename it to have a
.flac extension, and put it in your music library. Then try to play it
with the Sony. If the Sony won't play it then you're unlikely to have
much luck with the server-side decoding either, because the Sony will
still be looking at the FLAC files, not knowing that they will be served
up as something else.

And if you want to see a picture of what the LMS settings should look
like to send PCM from the server, take a look at section 1.6 of
soundcheck's TT 3.0 blog article:
http://soundcheck-audio.blogspot.com/2011/11/touch-toolbox-30.html#more

Without that and other info, it's hard to give you any answer better

That's a good idea -- I'd never thought of it that way before. I'll
give it a try.

Unfortunately mine isn't as chronological as I'd like it to be, because
for a long time I chose to let my tagging program update the file
modified time. Maybe this is the motivation I need to fix that. If I
'touch' the tracks to match the timestamp for the corresponding
cover.jpg I should be pretty close to the date it was added.

What OS are you on, Windows? I know a lot of people encountered

Do you really update your music library daily? That is, new tracks or
edited tags or new art or anything? Because if you're not updating it
daily and you've experienced scanning problems, then the repeated
scanning seems like _asking_ for trouble. It's not as if the database
degrades after a scan.

Would it help to understand if you considered that some filesystems
(such as Linux) do not store the file creation date anywhere? And that
Linux is the OS of choice for most NAS devices, as well as a large
share of SBS installations.

JJZolx suggested, the behavior is easily accommodated by not letting
your third-party application update the file modification time, or by
using a simple utility to reset the file modification to
old-time-plus-2-seconds or something.

The forum's search tool is your friend. This is a good place to start:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86628

Sync'ing with SqueezePlay isn't part of the agenda. First, SqueezePlay
is perpetual-beta software. It's largely a tool for development, and
not intended as end-user software (even though it works quite well at
that). So don't expect a lot of scarce development resources to go into
it. Second, the sync challenges are largely outside the control of the
server, as it depends on the vagaries of the infinite hardware and
software combinations on computers running SqueezePlay. It's not a
nice, predictable, controlled environment like a hardware SB.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6.1 not available for Debian?

Yeah, the debian repo for SBS isn't up to date. You can go to
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/ to download the 7.6.1 deb
package. Then install via:

sudo dpkg --install [path and filename to deb file]

It's a couple more steps, but it works. One thing I recommend is
stopping your current SBS before installing 7.6.1. For some reason, a
couple times recently when I've installed semi-manually like this the
7.6.1 SBS wouldn't start because the 'stop' command for the existing
SBS didn't execute correctly because the SBS pid was incorrect.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] What's happening with LMS?

2011-07-30 Thread aubuti

We can debate what constitutes "mass market", but I would say that
neither the current SB line or even a Touch that is fully capable of
running without an external is destined for the mass market. I was just
at my massage therapist, and here's the mass-market Logitech music
device she was using:
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/speakers-audio/ipod-mp3-speakers/devices/4320

Alternatively, for people who want to hear through a better audio
system there are endless mass-market iPod docks that connect to stereo
or A/V systems. People can argue that Linux or SBS or client-server
architectures are for "geeks", but if that's the case then so are
lossless codecs, decent tagging, etc. And many companies are successful
catering to these geeks. Not ubiquitous like Coca Cola or Windows, but
successful nonetheless.

Squeezeplay != SBS
One is the client, the other is the server. The Touch, Radio, and
Controller have both. On Windows, OSX, and *nix computers they are
separate. You want a tactile touch interface for Windows? Don't look to
the server (SBS) for a client function, look to Squeezeplay. Squeezeplay

touchscreen device to try it on, but I am pretty sure it does on

No, there are different builds for different platforms. Take a quick
look at downloads.slimdevices.com. The Perl base is largely the same,
but separate builds are needed for different hardware platforms. And,
of course, Windows users get a .exe instead of a bunch of Perl files.

The slimproto language that SBs use has been "opened up" for years, and
someone with the programming skills and interest could write a SB
frontend using that software. Someone already has written a foobar2k
package for controlling Squeezeboxes, and I believe something similar
exists for J River. In principle, there's no reason anyone couldn't do
it today for winamp. Why do you think this great idea hasn't taken off?
Or are you saying that Logitech devs should be writing the winamp, J
River, and foobar plugins (why stop there, go for iTunes, the most
popular desktop music software), and then rapidly regrouping every time
those companies make a significant change to their API?

It's the same as the other Linux ARM builds. It "doesn't have all the
features" because they are switched off via command line options. If
you wanted to add web ui support, support for SliMP3 and SB1, plugins,
etc you could by changing those command line options. And watch TinySBS
really grind to a halt.

to software like Winamp, Songbird, etc because those are completely
different animals. They play music on a computer, and it's not as if a
"wide audience" is using them to play music through their audio systems
via cable from the soundcard or external DAC.

If you're comparing to Apple's Airplay, or Sonos, then you may have a
point.

That's perfectly normal behavior for the Boom: the button lights are all
lit if it's not connected to a server. If you want the button lights to
stay off when you shutdown your server, you can connect the Boom to
mysqueezebox.com instead.

I use the ServerPowerControl plugin to automatically move several of my
SBs to mysb.com and put my server to sleep when they've been inactive
for 30 minutes. Alternatively you could set it as an end-of-day action.
You can also have your SBs brought back to your local SBS automatically
when it comes out of sleep.

Where is anywhere? The normal approach is to either (1) install the

update their firmware from that, or (2) connect to mysqueezebox.com and
get it from there. In either case you may need to use Settings >

If niether of those work, you could manually download from this site:

It is possible to install a beta on Vortexbox, but if you're not sure
how to do it then you may as well wait for the official release. This
instance of updating mysb.com before the SBS release is very unusual
for them. I suspect they rushed 7.5.4 to mysb.com to resolve
connectivity issues that people were having (and complaining about),
and underestimated the time it would take to iron out remaining issues
with 7.5.4 that are specific to SBS.

I think the answer to "when will 7.5.4 be released?" is when the devs
think it's ready. Previously they indicated it would be out the week of
March 28, but obviously they ran into some unexpected problems.

Until then, if you want to be happier, install the 7.5.4 beta. Even
though it's not final, it is stable, and it will eliminate the firmware
switching when you go back and forth between SBS and mysqueezebox.com.

Alternatively, don't switch between SBS and mysqueezebox.com.

I've lost track of when and how Touch updates, but I expect you should
still be able to revert Touch back to 7.5.3 by installing it via USB

Does that mean you're going to fix it? That would be great. If you do
I'll buy you a bottle of wine, maybe a Pouilly-Fumé (because that
Pouilly-Fume substitute is complete dreck :-).

I certainly don't expect Logitech to invest scarce development

realistically speaking it just ain't gonna happen.

I don't think that's a bad guess. My guess is that the majority -- or
at least a significant minority -- of folks who use SBS systems have
music libraries tagged in various languages, and use players and
software that get their metadata from tags instead of from filenames
and foldernames. Like you, I have a lot of music that's not in English,
including a fair bit of Spanish, Portuguese, and French. And the names
of tracks, artists, and albums are all displayed exactly as they are
meant to be, because all my audio software (SBS, Rockbox on Sansa, and
iTunes on iPod touch) uses the tags.

Actually, MiP playlist generation is important enough to me that I
would rename the files and playlists in that situation, as long as (1)
I could use incorrect-but-still-recognizable substitutes for the
unsupported letters in the file_names_ (such as á in place of a, ë in
place of e, ô in place of o, etc), and (2) the tags still showed the
correct a, e, i, o and u. Which is exactly the current situation with
the MiP plugin, just reversed.

I hear you, too. I have quite a few playlists, but most of them created
since I adopted the unaccented-only approach to folder/file naming, so
there was no issue with those. For the older ones I don't remember
whether I changed the paths manually or used a script with the 'tr'
operator. All my playlists were pretty much in one place, but I can see
how it would be a much bigger job for you, as your playlists are more
spread around and you use the exact same playlists for completely
different devices.

No, I'm not suggesting that you do anything whatsoever to your tags. I
am suggesting that you consider one additional step to your current
process (which would be applied retroactively to existing rips).

1) rip and transcode your CDs exactly as you're doing now, using the
correctly accented characters in the tags. Let dBpoweramp write the
accented characters to the filenames and/or directory names.

2) use mp3tag to batch rename only the filenames and foldernames to
un-accented Latin characters.

For existing rips, only (2) applies. Done correctly -- which isn't hard
-- it doesn't change the tags at all.

Btw, my reference to question marks, colons, and so forth was not
because I don't understand you're talking about acutes, graves,
circumflexes, and umlauts. I was merely trying to point out that in
many cases it is impossible to have a file or folder name render the
title of a track or album perfectly. It's a compromise imposed by the
filesystems. And you are already making that deviation from the
"correct" naming of your files and folders.

What I am proposing is a compromise imposed by a bug in MiP or the SBS
plugin. Ideally one wouldn't have to make such compromises, and I agree
any bug should be fixed. But in the meantime there is a simple
workaround available, and it is easy to revert to accented file and
folder names once the bug is fixed. (Admittedly, I'm not aware of any
such workaround for Chinese, Korean, Burmese, etc. -- at least not a
simple one.)

I am also a purist about correct tags, including accents. And I'd like
to have the file names and folder names correct. But given the current
choice between having correctly accented folder/file names and being
able to generate MiP mixes, the latter wins every time for me. YMMV.

+1

And the mp3tag 'action' for bulk changing file and folder names is dead
simple. Originally I didn't convert all the non-Latin filenames and
directory names because of MusicIP, but because of frequent
codepage/locale issues working across a mix of Linux and Windows
platforms. The fact that it also takes care of the MiP bug is a bonus.
And everything still displays correctly on SBS and other software
because they're using the unicode tags.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Scanner Problem

2011-02-16 Thread aubuti

Yes, if it is a Linux/Unix system. In *nix a dot at the beginning of a
filename or directory name means it is a hidden file or directory, and
the scanner will not scan it. OSX is based on Unix, but I don't know if
it would do the same thing. I imagine that if you hid a file or
directory on Windows (which uses a different method for hiding files)
the scanner wouldn't go there either, although I haven't tested that.

A common workaround is to leave the dots off the beginning of file and
directory names, but preserve them in the tags. Everything will still
look right in SBS because SBS generally uses the tags to present
track/album/artist info, not the file or directory names.

Better yet, don't worry about keeping a copy. Change the file and/or
folder names, but keep the correct accents in the tags. It will still
display properly on SB, because with very few exceptions (such as
Browse Music Folders) SBS cares about the tags and not the filenames.
If it works properly later, use a tool like mp3tag to change the file
and folder names based on the contents of the tags.

As promised/threatened I'm back with details. I also looked at your
suspected reasons in 'post #30 of this thread'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=565065#post565065), and
I would say that your #1 and #2 describe my situation pretty well. Ben
mentioned that at this stage he was focusing on re-ordering, and
fortunately that alone will get me most of the way to where I want to
go.

Looking at my first pass at customizing menus with 7.6 I really haven't
changed that much yet. Here are the un-customized (or semi-customized,
since I do control what appears on the Home menu) in 7.5.1:

SBC1:
NP
My Music: artists / albums / genres / years / new music / random mix /
music folder / playlists / dynamic playlists / search / switch library
Extras: other players / SDT / The Sync / SPC
My Apps: AccuRadio / BBC / Last.fm / LMA / Live365 / Napster / Odeo /
Pandora / Podcast Player / RadioTime / Rhapsody / SHOUTcast / Slacker /
SomaFM / Sounds & Effects / radioio
Favorites: as per my choice
Napster
Pandora
Turn On
Choose Player
Search
Settings: shuffle / repeat / spicefly / alarm clock / audio / home menu
/ image viewer / screen / sleep / SB name / sync / advanced

Touch:
My Music
SD card
Internet Radio: NPR Radio > list of shows (because of an applet???)
Extras: other players / SDT / The Sync / SPC / Custom Clock /
My Apps
Favorites
Napster
Pandora
Settings
Choose Player

And here is a more customized (still a work in progress) SBC:
NP
My Music: artists / albums / new music / playlists / Dyn Playlists /
genres / years / random mix / music folder / search / switch library
Favorites
Napster
Pandora
Extras: The Sync / SDT / SPC / Other players
My Apps
Search
Settings
Choose Player
Turn On

So not that different at all. At least not yet. I've moved Favorites,
Napster, and Pandora up in the Home menu, and re-ordered the My Music
and Extras sub-menus to put the things I use more often at the top.
I've put another thing I use often (Turn On/Off) at the bottom of the
Home menu to take advantage of a quick, blind spin-and-stop to get
there. Later on I may move Choose Player to that last space, but
definitely it's a waste (for me) to have Settings sitting there at the
end. And I'll probably move/hide some things in Settings to make things
more streamlined for me.

Being able to re-order MyApps would be a nice treat.

Does that help answer your questions?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Home menu customization in 7.6

erland;566236 Wrote:
> rcampbel3 and aubuti, just out of interest to understand the needs a bit
> better. Do you know exactly which customizations you like to do with
> this new functionality ?
I'll come back with details about how I would customize menus (and what
I think is clumsy about SP's defaults), but my main motivations are:

1) satisfying a knowledgeable user (me) who wants easy access to all of
the things "under the hood" and a novice user (my wife) who wants easy
access to only a few most-used things, and keep the rest out of the
way. Keeping the rest out of the way became more difficult since 7.4.0
where some items now have to be either on the Home menu or nowhere at
all. The novice user also wants placement of menu items to be
consistent and predictable (ie, don't re-order items 1-8 just because
you add item 9), which I think has been a problem with 7.4 and 7.5
(although I don't recall the specific examples).

2) both users like the idea of putting most used menu items at the top
of the menu list, roughly in order of frequency of use. The one
exception to this is putting a frequently-used item at the _bottom_ of
the list, so that you can scroll to it fast and it stops/pauses before
wrapping around to the top of the list. Pre-7.4 this was "Turn off
" and that was good, although I might prefer to put "Choose
Player" there instead. I would apply the same approach to some
sub-menus as well.

3) group similar things together. My main example here is the two
"apps" I put on the main menu: Napster and Pandora. Sure, they're not
the same thing, but having them separated from each other by "other
stuff" such as "Extras" or "Choose Player" or "My Apps" is just a
needless pain.

Like I said, I'll post back later tonight comparing my un-customized
7.5.1 menu with my first attempts at customizing using 7.6.0, which
will help illustrate the points. So far I've mostly thought about
re-ordering the Home menu, and not about sub-menus or hiding menus,
which I wasn't expecting would be coming any time soon.

2010-08-02 Thread aubuti

I'm one of those who has been pleading (whingeing?) for this feature
ever since 7.4.0 came out. So many thanks for giving it your attention.
I just had my first go with it on an SBC and I like it, including doing
things via the CM. Figuring out which sub-menus can and cannot be
re-ordered takes a little experimentation and I am sure in its present
state it would be confusing to a lot of users in that respect. Of
course, the ideal is for all of them to be customizable.

I'll also put in a plug for some kind of mechanism for easy copying of
menu settings from one device to another. Customizing several SP
devices one-by-one, especially to be exactly the same, is not a pretty
picture....

It's something I originally did thinking about all the software out
there, including portable players, that doesn't ignore "The". Then I
realized that that software usually _does_ ignore ARTISTSORT. So it
didn't really help, but it seemed benign, even if 'odd'.

Even though I doubt that's the cause, I changed those ARTISTSORT tags

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] mis-sorting artists on 7.5-embedded (SQlite)

2010-02-28 Thread aubuti

Found another example that fits the pattern of ignored spaces:
Chuck Brown [Brown, Chuck]
Jackson Browne [Browne, Jackson]
Greg Brown [Brown, Greg]

Filed as 'Bug 15805'

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] mis-sorting artists on 7.5-embedded (SQlite)

2010-02-27 Thread aubuti

That's probably it, especially because my description of "space" coming
after "z" was wrong. A fuller version of the first example I gave is:

Beatles
Beethoven
Be Good Tanyas
Joshua Bell
Leonard Bernstein

And that would be the correct order if you drop the spaces and ignore
the case.

[SlimDevices: Beta] mis-sorting artists on 7.5-embedded (SQlite)

2010-02-27 Thread aubuti

I just noticed a sorting bug and couldn't find it anywhere in bugzilla.
7.5-embedded (r30259) with sqlite is sorting artists as follows
(corresponding ARTISTSORT tag is shown in square brackets):

The Beatles [Beatles, The]
The Be Good Tanyas [Be Good Tanyas, The]
...
...
Kingsmen [Kingsmen, The]
Kings of Leon [Kings of Leon]
...
...
Otis Redding [Redding, Otis]
Red Hot Chili Peppers [Red Hot Chili Peppers]
...
...
etc.

In short, it seems that "space" is being sorted after "z". In 7.4.x all
of the examples above are reversed, which is what I would expect.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Embedded 7.5.0 - r30217 on a Buffalo LS Pro v1

2010-02-22 Thread aubuti

This is interesting, and congratulations! Do you have a list -- even a
partial list -- of the modules you needed to install? I know I could
slog through step by step like you did, but why re-invent the wheel if I
don't have to. And while you're at it, could you give me a reminder of
the cpan syntax for installing them?

I have an LS Pro v1 that I reflashed with FreeLink. The last version of
SC had running on it was 7.3.2, and after that I got tripped up with
various perl modules. My main server is now an MSI barebones nettop, and
there's no way I would go back to the LS Pro for every day use, but it
would be nice to have the LS as a backup or semi-portable SBS server.
And the embedded branch makes that more feasible. Thanks!

Okay. I've only used the embedded MySQL a little, and so far I haven't

No, that's not the case. 7.5-embedded has both SQLite and MySQL. The

They're tagged as "Folk; Rock" which SBS reports correctly in the web

under each of the two genres. In other words, I'm getting the desired

didn't work either, until Andy's fix last night.

It does in 7.4.1. With 7.5-embedded it only gets associated with Alison
Krauss in Artist browse, and gets put with VA in Album browse.

When I tag the way you have it with 7.5-embedded it only appears under
the Ks, and not Ps when I browse Artists, presumably because I don't
have another Robert Plant album anywhere in the library. More
problematic is that in Album browse it still gets stuck in with the VA
albums (reporting Compilation=Yes). To pretend I had another RP album I
temporarily retagged a Robert Johnson album as a Robert Plant album and
everything fell into place as you describe. So going out and buying a
Robert Plant solo album and tagging it the way you have it would resolve
things, but it's not really the solution I was looking for

[SlimDevices: Beta] album erroneously identified as VA? (r29883)

2010-01-24 Thread aubuti

I have the "Raising Sand" album (FLAC) tagged as
ARTIST=Alison Krauss
ARTIST=Robert Plant
ARTISTSORT=Krauss, Alison;Plant, Robert
COMPILATION=0

In SBS I have album sort order set to Artist, Year, Album. When
browsing by album in SBS 7.4.1 the album appears with Alison Krauss
albums. When browsing by artist it appears under Alison Krauss, and
again under Robert Plant.

In 7.5-embedded when browsing by album it appears under Various
Artists, and when I drill down it reports "Compilation: Yes". When
browsing by artist it appears only under Alison Krauss, and not under
Robert Plant. At present I don't have ALBUMARTIST sent, but I get the
same results in 7.5-embedded if I set AA to "Alison Krauss and Robert
Plant". Is this a 7.5 bug or intended behavior? My eyes often glaze over
at the AA/VA/etc discussions, but the 7.4.1 behavior makes more sense to
me.

[SlimDevices: Beta] embedded r29836 not following symlinks?

2010-01-19 Thread aubuti

I just updated to the latest nightly embedded 7.5.0 (r29836) and it's
not scanning all of my music files. Either it doesn't like my 401 MP3
files, or it doesn't like following the symlink from my FLAC library to
find them. It is finding all of my 5000+ FLACs. I noticed with r29767
(Jan 12) that the initial automatic rescan did not pick up the symlink'd
MP3s and that I had to do a separate "new and changed" scan to pick up
those tracks and the scan finds them as "new", but with r29836 even that
doesn't work. (NB: I am using MusicIP.)

Unfortunately all of my MP3s are in the symlink'd directory, so it
isn't easy for me to tell whether the source of the problem is being
MP3s or the symlink, although somehow I suspect the latter.
Interestingly, the first line on the scan report in the web ui is
"Remove deleted files (401 of 401)", so somehow it thinks the MP3s are
deleted, even when it never picks them up in the first place.

I'm using SQLite on the embedded branch with Ubuntu 8.10. I installed
it over an existing 7.5.0 non-embedded version. I have not tried using
MySQL with the embedded 7.5.0.

Which version of Ubuntu are you using? It would be easy for me to try

Like Michael said, the embedded branch also works for normal servers
running FatSBS. The main difference is that embedded branch uses SQLite,
although MySQL remains an option (that apparently isn't working for at
least some users, maybe all). So you can run the 7.5.0 embedded branch,
you just need to download it from a different place. See
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71768. I've been running
it for a few weeks on my Ubuntu server and it has been working well.
Scan times and web ui have been noticeably faster with SQLite, much
moreso than I got from applying the MySQL tweaks previously.

On what device are you holding the Play button (IR remote, SBC, Boom,
TP, etc.)? In 7.4 the keypresses changed for most interfaces. For
example, on the SBC you can select a track, press "+" (don't hold), and
get a context menu. On that context menu you can scroll down and one of
the choice is Create IP mix. I forget what the steps are with Boom or IR
remote, but can check those if that's what you're using.

On the SBS web ui, can you see the "M" mixable icon when you hover over
an album or track?

[SlimDevices: Beta] Getting 7.4.x and 7.5.0 to play nicely together

2009-11-08 Thread aubuti

I must be overlooking something really basic, but for the life of me I
can't figure out what it is.

During 7.4.0 development, I ran 7.3.3 on my "production" server and
7.4.0 beta on a virtual machine running on the same physical server. It
worked great: I had a couple SBs in my "test sandbox" connected to 7.4.0
while most of the house, including 2 SBCs, stayed with 7.3.3 and related
firmware. If I wanted I could switch the music source on those players
to the vm running 7.4.0, but I had to initiate that change.

Now I am trying to do the same thing with 7.4.1 and 7.5.0, but the SBCs
and players are acting up. As soon as I start the 7.5 SBS all of my SBCs
want to upgrade to the firmware that corresponds to 7.5.x, even though
they are controlling SBs that are connected to the 7.4 server. When I
try to browse my music library I get a spinny while it tries to connect
to the 7.5 box, then tries the 7.4.1 box, then back to 7.5. It's nuts.

How can I keep the SBCs and SBs from trying to jump ship from 7.4 to
7.5? I think some of the SBs are trying to migrate to the 7.5 server as
well, although I still need to confirm that. Thanks.

Take a look at the good ol' Windows Task Manager (ctrl-shift-esc) and
see if it's using lots of virtual memory. I think that info is on the
performance tab, although it won't tell you which app(s) are causing the
swap to disk. If the onset of this coincided with your edits to my.tt,
un-doing that sounds like a very good place to start.

It's very easy to do it via the Customize Controller plugin. Put them
somewhere on your SC server that won't get wiped out when you upgrade
SqueezeCenter/SqueezeboxServer -- I put mine in my /home/foo directory
on the server, but somewhere on the music share should be fine too.

[SlimDevices: Beta] scanner.log listing every track scanned

2009-09-25 Thread aubuti

I'm not sure when this started happening, but since at least 18-Sept SbS
is listing every track it scans in scanner.log, even though I have the
logging level for scan.scanner set to "Error". All my other logging is
set to Error except for server.memory (Off) and server.update (Warn).
Are others seeing this and/or anyone know why it's happening?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Help/Advice V7.4 on Ubuntu

2009-09-25 Thread aubuti

I've been using 7.4 under Ubuntu 8.10 for a while and it is pretty
stable. There was a fairly big problem in August when big changes were
made to the SBC user interface, especially for a lot of people who
didn't realize they were running alpha/beta software. All that seems to
have settled down now.

One potential 'gotcha' is that SC 7.4 now runs under username
'squeezeboxserver' (Squeezebox Server, or SbS, is the new name for SC)
instead of username 'squeezecenter'. At least that's the case for *nix
systems, I don't know about Windows or MacOS. The .deb package *should*
take care of creating the new user account and setting up the
appropriate /var/log/squeezeboxserver/ and /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/
directories, as well as installing a new startup script for SBS. You may
well also need to change file and folder ownership for your playlists,
which need to be writeable by user 'squeezeboxserver'. When they first
rolled out these changes it was recommended to uninstall the existing SC
before installing a clean SBS. I don't know if that's still the case for
new upgrades to 7.4, but subsequent updates from the nightlies have been
smooth.

I don't know what the plans are regarding putting 7.4 into testing repo
before putting it in the stable repo. If you want to install 7.4 today,
change your sources.list to unstable main.

Just to confirm that I've tried this and it works. You can find the
existing wallpaper files on the SBC in
/usr/share/jive/applets/SetupWallpaper/wallpaper/. Grab the old files
from there in a 7.3 installation, or anywhere else you can find them.
Then copy them to anywhere your SC can read, preferably not somewhere
that will be overwritten with new SBC firmware or SBS software; I use my
/home/foo directory on the SC server. Use the Customize Controller
plugin to point SC to that location for additional wallpaper and voila.
You don't even need to reboot the SBC.

Which home menu(s) are you having a problem with? SBC, web ui, VFD
player display (Classic / Boom / etc)? Pandora's been consistently

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 appearance on controllers - dull and ugly?

2009-09-19 Thread aubuti

You can definitely still assign different wallpaper to different players
with 7.4. As for re-using 7.3.3 backgrounds, I would think that you
could grab the old wallpaper files from a 7.3.3 installation and use the
Customize Controller plugin to make them available in 7.4.

Unfortunately, I forget where the wallpaper files are stored. A little
bit of digging for png, jpg, jpeg or bmp files with the 'find' command
on the SBC should turn up something.

By "one page" do you mean one that doesn't require scrolling? I think
that's a red herring. Allow customization of what items go on home menu,
which SqueezeOS kind of has now, AND allow custom ordering of those
items, which SqueezeOS doesn't have now. Then let the user make the Home
menu as long or short as they desire.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] No Pandora on SC 7.4?

2009-09-17 Thread aubuti

Thanks for the explanation. I have many Pandora stations, with some
aimed at a particular genre or sub-genre, and others a more eclectic
mix. So I like having the "new station" readily available. I suspect
that the change you are requesting is something that would have to be
implemented by Pandora, rather than by Logitech/Slim Devices, but I
could be wrong about that.

I think you choose a good ordering in two steps: first decide what
things belong on the Home menu, and second, decide what order makes
sense. The functionality for the first of these currently exists on all
players, but the latter only exists on the older players
(SB/SB2/SB3/Boom). And if you do it right (ie, in consultation with
family members) they say "thank you" when things aren't the way they
used to be.

I personally am not looking forward to my wife's reaction to the 7.4
menus on the SBC. She has gotten used to the older menus, and sees no
reason for changing them. But they will change when I put 7.4 on our
main server the day that SqueezeNetwork goes to 7.4, and also add the
Touch and Radio to the main server. Being able to re-order the home menu
would go a long way toward making the transition easier for a casual
user. The current SBC order makes no sense to our current usage
patterns:

Now Playing
My Music
Internet Radio
Pandora
Choose Player
Recent Searches
My Apps
Favorites
Napster
Turn On
Settings

Just curious: if the first Pandora menu is "Your Stations," how would
you get to the other Pandora options, such as creating a new station,

Yes, I only see it on SN for the older players as well. And on the
older players the SC home menu is re-ordered from SC, not SN. No
re-order options on SN or SC for either Touch or Radio. And nothing
anywhere for SBC either.

I had always assumed that the home menu always came from whichever
server you were connected to, and that unless you explicitly exited SC,
the SC-defined menu would prevail. But that's just my guess.

Ouch. I haven't spent any time lately being connected only to SN. But
one of the things that made me think again about re-ordering the SC home
menu was seeing how re-ordering *is* supported on test.sn.com. And
you're right that the 'App' thing makes this more important.

[SlimDevices: Beta] re-ordering home menu on SBC (and Touch & Radio)?

2009-09-13 Thread aubuti

Sorry if I've missed something here, but is there any progress on
supporting user-defined ordering of items on the home menu on the
SqueezeOS-based players (SBC/Touch/Radio/SqueezePlay)? I can't find the
option anywhere, but I also suspect that things have moved ahead since
'this post last year'

I really like most of what has been done on the new SBC ui, but for
other family members it would really help to be able to change the order
of items in the home menu. Selecting which items go in the home menu
gets me part way there, but customizing the order as well would be a
huge help.

But it's not permanent, is it? At least with r7485 the user can go to
Settings > Home Menu and select/de-select App Gallery. However, if App
Gallery is removed from the SBC home menu then it doesn't seem to appear
under Settings or anywhere else. In other words, the user has to restore
it to the Home Menu in order to regain access to App Gallery.

I can see the logic of having App Gallery default to being on the Home
Menu, to increase user awareness of the possibilities. Afterward the
user can remove it from the home menu, although I think it would be
better if removing it from the home menu would shift it to the Settings
menu, rather than disappearing it completely.

I don't use Sirius, but I would think that like most subscription
services it keeps your radio channels in a prefs file on *their*
servers. Are you sure you don't simply need to re-enter your Sirius
credentials on SC and/or SqueezeNetwork? And if Sirius doesn't keep
them, then they must be in a prefs file on your local computer, so you
can restore them from a backup.

Then you probably know that MySQL been the slimserver/SC database for
less than 3 years. Before that it was . . . SQLite. There were good (and
debatable) reasons for that change, and some transition pains, and the
same is true this round.
