[Ontbirds] Loggerhead Shrikes Napanee Alvar

2016-08-03 Thread Dave Don
Hello everyone,

Yesterday Tuesday Aug 2nd, Anna Skorobohacz and myself made the trip up to the
Alvar to try for Loggerhead Shrikes. As soon as we arrived, we were rewarded
with a decent view of an adult Shrike on Joyce Road, between Craigen and Brady
Roads. Later on in the morning we had another adult on the Nature Reserve along
Nugent Rd. Albeit late in the season these birds will probably be around for a
little while yet, for those so inclined to make the late summer trip. Upland
Sandpiper seem to have dispersed, but all the other grassland birds were still
in abundance.

A special thank you to Bruce Di Labio, for his excellent posts and information
about this 'oasis' in Napanee, and the landowners who were so welcoming. A
certain organization in the Hamilton Area would learn a lot from the people who
run this reserve, and the land owners who were so 'welcoming to birders'.

The general area is approx 7 km North of Hwy 401. Travelling East on Hwy 401,
Exit 579 and travel North on Hwy 41, then turn right on Denridge and right
again on Craigen.

Good luck and enjoy if you go.

Cheers,

Dave Don

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Wigeon Tommy Thompson park

2016-03-20 Thread Dave Don
 Hi Folks,

The Drake Eurasian Wigeon was still showing well again this morning in Cell C
on the Leslie St Spit, in East Toronto.

Directions:

Cell C is about a 35 min walk from the base, BEFORE Wooden lift Bridge. Turn
right on Bird Banding Station Rd, signed APSSC Sailing club. Walk approx 250m
to the wooden building on your left. Bird was directly out from the beach with
American Wigeon and other Ducks.

The previously reported Harlequin Ducks (looks like a mated pair). Re-found by
Rob Dobos at Gairloch Gardens off Lakeshore Rd in Oakville this morning were
still bobbing in the surf this afternoon, after 45 minutes trying to refind
them, a calmer day might be better for these!

[Ontbirds] Eared Grebe in Puslinch

2013-12-06 Thread Dave Don
Hi all,

The Eared Grebe continues its stay at the McMillan Pit in Puslinch. Also there
today (Friday) were a Common Loon and Several American Wigeon amongst the usual
Waterfowl and 100s of Canada Geese, at the back of this old Quarry Pit.

Directions: Take Hwy 6 North from Burlington/Hamilton to Conc 1 Puslinch. Turn
left on Conc 1 and continue West to Con 7, then turn right and go North on Conc
7 to Conc 2. Turn left and go West on Conc 2. The pits are well marked,
MacMillan Pit is on the South side aways down. All the birds were
unfortunately at the back, so a quiet walk in and a scope would be advisable,
to see this Grebe well.

Good luck,

The dark glossy Blue Crows were heading some what towards Bronte Harbour, on
both occasions. There is definitely a small invasion going on.

[Ontbirds] FISH CROW IN BURLINGTON

2012-03-31 Thread Dave Don

Birders,

I had the very fortunate experience at 2pm today 31st March, of hearing and
seeing well another single Fish Crow right over my driveway as I was leaving my
house. The bird again, was calling continuously with its high nasal "uh uh", as
it circled overhead for approx 2 mins before slowly drifting North East.

Keep your ears pinned for the unmistakable call of these Crows, if you are in
this general area. This is still a good time to listen as there are no young
American Crows that have similar "begging calls", present yet.

I am in the area of South East Burlington, a block from the Lakeshore and
approx 1km West of Shell Park where I had another (or the same bird?) Fish Crow
on the 14th of March.

Good luck,

[Ontbirds] American Pipits Haldimand County

2010-01-03 Thread Dave Don

Hi all,

At around 3pm today Sunday Jan 3rd, George Pond and I observed approx 50
American Pipits and 1-Snow Bunting, on Conc 9, just West of Cheapside Rd, were
Mike, and Dennis have previously reported the Lapland Longspurs. After much
effort I did find at least 2-Lapland Longspurs in a flock of approx 25 Horned
Larks further East on Concession 9, in the corn field on the South side. There
is a major influx of birds in and around these corn fields, and on a better
weather day, it certainly would be worth careful scoping the fields for other
Longspurs, today you could hardly stand up, or see in the blinding snow.

Directions: Courtesy of Mike Street. From the traffic light in Hagersville,
follow Reg Rd 20, towards Nelles Corners. Cheapside Rd, starts and runs South
off Reg.20 just before the 'Hagersville Junk Yard'. Concession 9 is the third
cross road. Turn right (west) and look for the birds on the road and all the
fields North and South, in and around the small Pine Plantation.

Happy New Year to all,

[Ontbirds] Wilsons Warbler in Oakville

2009-12-23 Thread Dave Don

Seasons Greetings,

While trying to find some of the good winter birds, found on the South Peel
CBC, posted locally with excellent directions by Mark Cranford, I came upon a
bright male Wilson's Warbler. The bird was found on the East side of the
Oakville SW Waste Water Treatment Plant, on Lakeshore Rd in Oakville. I was
pishing in this area, hoping to locate the previously reported Ruby-crowned
Kinglet, and out popped this Wilson's Warbler. The area is right next to the
concrete holding cells on the East side, the bird would feed a lot on the
ground, inside the chain link fence. I watched it for probably 10 mins, when
low and behold it was joined by the Ruby-crowned Kinglet. They both seemed to
be getting something around these sewage holding cells!

Directions: I parked at the end of Hixon St.. Hixon St is the first light
south of Rebecca St, on Third Line in Oakville. There is a woodlot here,
Sedgewick Park I believe. I walked East thru this woodlot heading slightly
South till you get to Waste Water Plant, look on the East Side.

After this I tried successfully for the Two Tufted Titmice, on Brookfield Rd,
which is the first Rd, on the right, East of Dorval Drive on Lakeshore Rd, also
in Oakville. I had one bird in a Norway Spruce at #51 Brookfield Rd.

I then headed to Port Credit where I easily located 8 Yellow-rumped Warblers
looking from the Parking Lot at Snug Harbour Restaurant at Hurontario. They
were feeding on berries here along side the Credit River, chipping like crazy.

Just West of here, the 3- Harlequin Ducks 1-Drake and 2-females, were showing
well on the rocks on the shoreline, in the 1st Bay West of Saddington Park.

On this high note, I would personally like to thank Mark for all his hard work
in keeping Ont Birds going, and wish you all a safe Happy Christmas,

[Ontbirds] CATTLE EGRET @ WATERDOWN GARDEN SUPPLIES, FLAMBOROUGH

2009-07-31 Thread Dave Don

Good evening Ont Birders,

Sorry for the late post, but I got called back to work, on my short day off,
and have just got home.

Around 1pm today Friday, I observed an adult breeding plumaged Cattle Egret, at
the back NE pond at the Waterdown Garden Supplies Facility in Flamborough. It
eventually flew East across the ploughed field and landed behind some Red
Barns, off Hwy 5, were Cheryl and I lost site of it.

I spent a few hours at the facility today in search of the Laughing Gull, but I
could not find it, among the 1000s of Ring billed Gulls.

I am certain the Egret will show again this weekend, for there are lots of
Horse Farms that are in this area.

Directions:

Waterdown Garden Supplies will be only open only till noon Sat. They are closed
Sunday and Holiday Monday. Please check in at the Front office, and obtain your
safety vest. Continue to safely walk North in the facility to the back rows of
compost, then proceed East nearly to the fence line, then South a few hundred
yards. Scan West in this pond edges, the bird was happily feeding here. The
Facility is located on the North side of Hwy 5, between Orkney Rd and Woodhill
Rd, in Flamborough. As mentioned there are many Horse Farms in this area, so a
cruise around them all, is certanly worth the effort. Rob Dobos turned up
2-Cattle Egrets in this same area two years ago.

Apologies again for the late post.

Good Luck,

Dave Don

[Ontbirds] Orange-crowned Warbler @ Bronte Provincial Park "East"

2008-12-14 Thread Dave Don

Hi,

The Orange-crowned Warbler found by Andrew Don yesterday continues to show
in the campground area on the East side of the Park. Best way to get to this
general area, which is N.W of the office, is to follow the main rd in, till
you are just North of the childrens play ground. I located the Warbler at
the back of a weedy ridge, were there is a path between the weedy ridge and
the new houses. The bird was feeding low and travelling with Juncos and Tree
sparrows, in this sheltered area.

Other birds seen today, were Northern Mockingbird, Eastern Bluebirds,
Long-eared Owl. I could not relocate the House Wren found by Rod Murray
yesterday, but I am pretty sure it is still around in this general area
also! The park was quite birdy this morning.

Bronte "East" campground is located off Bronte Rd, North of the QEW, in the
town of Oakville.

Cheers and good luck,
Dave Don

[Ontbirds]Gray Partridge @ Brantford

2008-01-04 Thread Dave Don

Good evening all,

The covey of 6 Gray Partridge were still at the back of house #55 on Green
Rd today (Friday pm), just East of the Brantford Airport property.

Directions: Take Hwy 403 to Rest Acres Rd (Hwy 24), proceed South to
Robinson Rd, turn left (East) on Robinson Rd to Green Rd. At Green turn
right (South). The Partridge were at the back of the 2nd house on the left,
#55, and were easily viewed from the Rd. They like to shelter here from the
prevailing SW winds, so they should offer up excellent views for the next
few days. No need to get out of your car or they will flush.

Also on my way back to Burlington, thru downtown Brantford, I had a small
kettle of 6 Turkey Vultures on Colborne St West, right by Pauline Johnston
Collegiate, just North of the Brantford City Dump.

On the North East corner of Hwy 2 & 52, I counted 41 Wild Turkey in the open
field.

Cheers,

[Ontbirds]Northern Gannet

2007-11-11 Thread Dave Don

Birders,

The juvenile Northern Gannet found by Rob Dobos yesterday, was still
present on the western end of lake Ontario this afternoon Sunday,
probably ranging from the Burlington lift bridge to 50 point. John Lamey
and myself observed it at Grays Rd being harassed by 3 Ring-billed
gulls. Brandon Holden had seen it off Hutches restaurant earlier this
afternoon.

After close to 3hrs of searching, the male Barrows Goldeneye was finally
located off Lawrence P Sayer Park, between Grays and Green Rd in Stoney
Creek, in with literally hundreds and hundreds of ducks. Lots of
patience is required, and beware of the hybrid!

[Ontbirds]Franklin`s Gulls Dundas Marsh Hamilton

2007-10-07 Thread Dave Don

Happy Thanksgiving all,

There now appears to be a possible 4 Franklin`s gulls at the end of the
Willows in the Dundas marsh.

At first light this morning Sunday, I had two fly over my head in the
company of Ring-billed gulls. Immediately scoping the other gulls on the
mud, I had one more, which was joined by a fourth bird 10 mins later. I
do not believe that any of the gulls leaving the marsh returned the hour
or so I was there. I left at 8.15am, with 2 Franklin`s gulls actively
feeding in the mud.

Best strategy to see these birds is to arrive at first light before most
of the gulls fly off to the dumps or fields for the day.

On Friday last, I encounted one Nelson`s Sharp-tailed Sparrow in the
Marsh alongside Paradise pond, on the East side. The American White
Pelican was also seen today Sunday by another lady. There is also still
a good selection of Shorebirds to be seen, including 22 Dunlin today.

Directions: The Dundas marsh can be accessed of Cootes Drive in Dundas,
which runs adjacent to McMaster University Hamilton. Park on the layby
on the West side, cross the Bridge over the Creek. The trail head is
marked with a Blue piece of styrafoam, which is the right side of the
creek. Follow the now well maintained trail all the way to the end of
the Willows, (about 1/2 hr). Carefully walk out on to the mud were all
the birds can be scoped, with patience.

Cheers and good luck,
Dave Don

[Ontbirds] Buff-breasted Sandpiper. Red-necked Phalaropes Dundas Marsh Hamilton.

2007-08-29 Thread Dave Don

Good evening all,

Shorebirding continues to be excellent in and around the Hamilton area.
This evening (Wed), a walk out to the "Willows" in the Dundas Marsh,
revealed 1 juv Buff-breasted Sandpiper and 5 juv Red-necked Phalaropes.
Other notable Shorebirds were, 4 juv Bairds Sandpipers, 3 juv Stilt
Sandpipers, 3 juv Solitary Sandpipers, 20 juv Short-billed Dowitchers, 4
adult Black-bellied Plovers, along with many, many peeps, yellowlegs, etc.

On the way back to the Car over Cootes Drive, I had a flock of 25 +
Common Nighthawks foraging overhead. A true spectacle.

Directions: The Dundas Marsh can be accessed from Cootes Drive, which
runs adajacent to Mc Master University, in Hamilton. Take the trail to
the right of the Creek. The trailhead is well marked with a piece of

[Ontbirds]Update- Hamilton Birds

2007-07-22 Thread Dave Don

Hi,

Checked out the Dundas Marsh yesterday evening (Sat), but had no luck
with the Ruff, though there are lots places for it to hide! There was an
American Bittern seen in the first pond, just before I arrived.

This morning (Sun) the Eurasion Collared-Dove was easily found by its
constant vocalisations and display flights, at one point it tried to
mate with a Mourning Dove, to no avail.

At about 10am I located 1 adult Red-headed Woodpecker calling to a
juvenile southwest of the village of Sheffield, as previously had been
reported by Ross Reid.

The 2 birds were seen on 5th Conc W, between Sager Rd, and Sheffield Rd,
by blue house # 2437, which has a nice stand of Oak trees there.

Dundas Marsh can be best accessed of Cootes Drive in Dundas, following
the trail East of the the Creek.

The Dove can be easily be located at the intersection of Fifty Rd and
Ridge Rd in Grimsby. Fifty Rd can be accessed off the QEW, in Grimsby.

Good luck,

Dave Don

There appears to be a YH Blackbird(female) in the 3rd cell of the GBLagoons.
The bird is hanging with a large flock of Redwings that spend much of their
time in the ground cover on the north side of the cell.

Lagoons are on Mollard line just east of Grand Bend..

[Ontbirds]White-winged Crossbills, Ruff-Grouse in Flamborough

2007-02-03 Thread Dave Don

Hi All,

The White-winged Crossbills were still busy feeding at the Patterson
Tract near Rockton, Flamborough at 2pm today (Sat). Thanks Rob Dobos
for a great find in the middle of nowhere.

Also flushed was a Ruff Grouse, that put the Crossbills up in the air,
at least 10, mostly males. They soon settled on top of a spruce tree to
resume feeding. The best way to find these birds is through their
contact calls. I searched for over an hour before locating them.

Directions: This tract of forest can be found on the 4th Concession
Road West, a few 100 metres west of Wood Hill Road on the north side of
the road. Park by the concrete blocks, which is the entrance to the
tract and take the main trail north. The birds were all seen within a
500 metre radius of a bright orange hunters hat on the main trail.

Good hunting,
Dave

Gray Flycatcher Update

2003-12-19 Thread Dave Don

Fellow Birders:

After three hours of searching today, I finally caught up with this bird.
Many thanks to a Stratford birder for showing me the area. Today the bird
was foraging behind the mouth of the pond in a small woodlot which had a
wide open expanse behind it which contained one huge fallen log. The bird
was sallying back and forth from the woodlot and foraging in the leaf
litter. At one point, I had the bird in my scope at 40 feet eating what
appeared to be a centipede(?). The bird appeared very healthy and active.

Patience is a must. When I left at 2:40 pm I was the only person around; I
am sure though that more eyes will be looking over the weekend and the bird
will be found more easily.

Directions from Hamilton:

Hwy #6 South to Caledonia to Hwy #54
Turn left on Hwy #54 River Road to York
Cross the river at York
Continue along River Road to Indiana Road
Turn right on Indiana Road
1.9 km from the junction - park on the right
Cross the field to the pond and the woodlot behind

Patience and Good Luck,
Dave Don

Hi Ont birders,

The bird at this point was 30 feet away. It was still there when I left at
5:15pm.

Hi birders,
  At 11am today I had a Covey of 6 Gray Partrdge,on

flight. The birds only flew approx 30yds, to take cover under a Evergreen,
directly behind a sign saying Shipping/Receiving Doors 1-6. The birds
remained there till I left at 11am.
Directions.Hwy 403 to Hwy 24 South, which is known as Rest Acres Rd.
Follow 24 South till you get to Hwy 53. Turn left on 53 & York Rd is on your
left, opposite where all the new yellow school buses are parked.
