John Marr [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am running blackbox on debian unstable. I would like to have gkellm and a background be added to my desktop whenever i boot up into my system. You don't mean boot. Booting is the process of starting your machine. Your machine can sit there for hours (days, weeks) without anybody being logged in -- you want this to start up when you log in. In particular, you probably only want these to start iff you log in locally and you use X (in contrast to logging in on the console or remotely). I am using gdm. I have been told that by editing my .xinitrc or my .xsession file that I can have these apps load on boot. My problem is that I have added the correct commands to both of these file, yet nothing automatically starts when I boot into linux. Am I doing something wrong, or is there something messed up with my system. I believe if you use [k|g|x]dm, it should be in your ~/.xsession, which must be world readable and executable IIRC (man chmod for that). They also log their errors into a file, per default it's in /var/log/gdm/, I think (though the location of that file can be found in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf). In defense of myself Jan, this is what I did. Perhaps I mistyped my intentions. Up until now, I have been reading the blackbox FAQ and other online documentation at bb.themes.org. Last night, when I went there to try to read up on my problem, I discovered that all the documentation has been removed and a Come back later sign was put in its place. Now, I did a google search to find other documentation for blackbox, but every link I found was back to the bb.themes.org site. I even read the man page for blackbox again, but it only says to edit the .xinitrc file. I am sure that you are just being helpful to me, and I appriciate it. I just wanted to point the lack of documentation at bb.themes.org. I will try your suggestions and see what happens :) Thanks for all who are helping me John Marr
Success with startup.. I think
I managed to get gkrellm and a background to load up on start, but I did it in an unorthadox way. In order to have blackbox as an option in gdm, I had to add a Blackbox script to the /etc/gdm/Sessions/ directory. I added gkrellm -w and a background command to the /etc/gdm/Sessions/Blackbox script and it worked. I am happy. Really. Is there some way that I can have the /etc/gdm/Sessions/Blackbox script parse (I think that is the word-[read]) another file, possibly the .xsession file? Since I am the only user of this machine, it does not really matter, but I would like to be able, if I log in as another user, the have a different background. Thanks in advance John Marr

Those are the main issues i have with bb, there are other things like loading things on bb startup and specifying a slit location but those are easy to find out by looking around. I'm also sorry if the above questions seem simple but I can not find ANY documentation besides the man file and an FAQ online.
