[Blind-Computing] List Guidelines Reminder

2011-01-01 Thread Moderator

Welcome to the Blind Computing mailing list.

This list has been created for the purpose of discussing any and all aspects
of computing with the blind user in mind.

List Guidelines:

The following are guidelines set forth by the list management team and every
member is expected to abide by them.

1. Profanity and ethnic or racial slurs will not be tolerated.

2. Flaming of individuals or groups or organizations of any kind will not be
tolerated.

3. Advertising is not permitted.

4. Political or religious inferences or discussions are not permitted.

5. Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an
article or message of interest which relates to the nature of this list send
it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the
list. Additionally if you want to make an announcement about another list
send it

to the list owner for consideration. Do not post it to the list before
obtaining approval.

6. No off-topic posts! Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not
make it all right. Off-topic posts include but are not limited to
discussions

of Blind advocacy groups,
products for the blind that are not computer-related items, Transportation
for the blind, and Job opportunities or concerns. If you are not sure
whether
or not your topic is appropriate contact the list owner for approval before
posting.

7. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the
following manner:

Using the TO: field with only one list address.

The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules
to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect
do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists
at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for
each and every list. This practice does nothing ut clutter up such lists
with

unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators.

8. On topic posts may include but are not limited to discussions of
Screen readers and magnifiers, computer peripherals, (scanners printers
Braille devices etc) Computer operation, Computer maintenance and Computer
building.

9. Subject lines should be clear and to the point! Subject lines such as I
Need help or Does anyone know are not descriptive and might be ignored
by the very person who might otherwise have answered your query. Also do not
include any member names in the subject line.

10. Keep the message content relative to the topic being discussed! If the
conversation starts to drift from the original topic initiate a new

conversation message with a new subject line to reflect the new topic.

11. No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto
responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not

included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed!

12. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this
is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means
that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum.

No message headers please! Nobody wants to read an irrelevant message before
reading your post.

If you want to plug your business church or whatever do it somewhere else
not on this list!

If you want to include contact information and a tag line at the bottom of
your messages feel free to do so but do not make another message out of it.

Remember that there are people of different walks of life origin age groups
and levels of computer experience on the list. Individuals with more
knowledge
and experience should be patient with those who are trying to become more
proficient.

If you have comments, questions or concerns about how the list is being run
do not post them to the list contact the list management team.

It is not the place for any individual list member to admonish another
member for an improper post let the management Team do their job.

Hopefully everyone will benefit from this list and it will allow all of us
to be more comfortable and productive using these machines that help us get

thru this thing called life!

* By joining this list you accept the guidelines as outlined above, and
agree to abide by them. If you don't agree, then you should unsubscribe.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Easiest way to get music on a psp

2011-01-01 Thread David

Hello Joshua;

well;
I've never used a
PSP gaming system;

however if your only wanting to rip a audio cd, using Windows media player,
so you can transfer to the PSP system audio player;
try the following;

1. Open the start menu, type in some or all of windows media player and
press enter.
or, you could just go to start menu/all programs and find and enter on
windows media player.

2. Place the CD in the drive.

3. The CD will probably start playing, if your using windows media player as
your default player. If you want to stop it playing, press ctrl+s.

4. Press alt+i to rip. Ripping will start, and will eject at the end if
you've set the option. Note that if when you press alt+i you hear a warning
beep, this means that the rip button on the toolbar is not visible. Press
windows key+up arrow to maximize the window, and then

press alt+i again.

I am using Windows 7. A PSP is a gaming system that has an mp3 player
built in. A sighted person with access to Windows Media Player would
simply be able to rip a cd onto his computer, and sync it with the device.
However, Windows Media Player doesn't seem to be that user friendly to a
blind person.

Hello. I want to rip CDS, and put them on a psp for my friend.
What is the easiest way to do this? I have jaws 11, and Windows
media player 11, but it doesn't seem to be too accessible.

I probably could have but I had an opportunity to purchase 6 of these
cards on Amazon for $11 with free shipping. The USB card has buttons to
adjust the volume and it's very convenient. It also has a microphone jack.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Avast

2011-01-01 Thread Gerald Levy

You might want to consider switching to Microsoft Security Essentials which
is totally JAWS accessible and was just selected as the best freeware
product of 2010 by the popular Gizmo's Freeware site. I have never used
Avast myself, but apparently, Avast has been getting less and less JAWS
friendly with each successive release. Why put up with this aggravation
when there is a better alternative? Even if they respond to your email
complaint, it could take weeks for them to address the JAWS compatibility
issue.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Web page to plain tex help please

2011-01-01 Thread Mike Barbara In Arcadia
Hi Niamh;

First, never feel like you are asking a stupid question. The only stupid
question, is the question that is not asked. This computer crap can drive
us all up a wall! LOL

Below are a couple of ways of doing what you want, if I'm understanding your
question correctly.

One thing you can do is to select and copy information from a web site as

text only. This use to be the default in earlier versions of JAWS. When on

a web page bring up JAWS verbosity with Insert_V and use down arrow to move

to the virtual cursor settings choice. Expand the group if it is closed

by using right arrow. Use down arrow to move to the choice select and copy

full content using on screen highlight. Press the spacebar until JAWS says

select and copy using virtual cursor and then press the enter key. When

you select the information and copy or append it to the clipboard, the

formatting and HTML element information won't be included.

Take care.

Brian Lee

I am working on a sales training manual and find that the following removes

html formatting from source material copied from web based resources.

1. Highlight the text/Email you want to copy.

2. Copy it to the windows clipboard with CTRL+C.

3. Return to, or open a new document.

4. If you are copying text into an existing document, When you get to the
place you want to insert your copied material press

alt+E. Just press Alt + E if you are pasting text into a new document.

5. Up-arrow until you hear Jaws say paste special

6. Press enter and up-arrow until you hear Jaws say paste as unformatted

text and press enter.

This will remove all of the HTML formatting from your copied material and

insert it into your document.

Be advised that your cursor will be at the bottom of the inserted material

and you will need to use the appropriate reading commands to get to the

beginning of your text.

HTH Larry Stansifer

Hope the above steps have helped. Take care.
Mike

[Blind-Computing] jaws echo feedback update

2011-01-01 Thread yvonne oliver
hi
about a week or two ago [give or take a bit] i wrote to the list

referring to an ongoing problem that i have had for several months with

no sensible or even logical answer.
the problem was as the subject box describes.
that was that whenever i chat to anyone on skype they can hear jaws

echoing back through the loudspeakers.
i am unable to hear theirs.
this brought me to thinking that something was not quite right here.
so i set about the mammoth task of asking everyone i could think of for

any possible solution to what was causing this to happen and how it

could be rectified.
amongst the people i asked was the r n i b computer volunteer chap and

Wally Harding a technition in computing at the r n i b in Peterborough

UK.
unfortunately with all of these possible people that could shed some

light on to the subject sadly no one was able to comply and fulfil my

request.
i went through the settings in sound manager and could find nothing

untoward.
i spoke to someone on skype last night and it was decided that between

us we would see what the setting were for the both of us.
i then discovered one of them was set at 95.
much to high i am sure.
so it was brought down to 50 percent.
this made a huge difference although there was still some more work to

do.
another problem i had of which i did not mention to the list was that

my speech/modulation sounded like i was underwater.
nothing like the way i sounded when we first spoke to each other on

skype.
my learned friend was still able to hear the screen reader over the

speakers but it was at a much improved audio level and was hardly

hearable. a far cry on previous evenings when the screen reader was

louder than me.
another suggestion that my learned friend spoke about was moving the

microphone from the cack of the computer and place it in the front of

the tower casing.
oh well nothing to lose here i suppose so with great difficulty i

managed to pull the microphone jack plug out of the sound card on the

back of the computer and place it at the front.
there is a flap which contains 2 u s b sockets and 2 3.5 jack plug

sockets.
as soon as i spoke i heard the other person say much better.
he said i sound just like i did when we first spoke on skype with no

harmonic feedback and modulation was perfectly clear and very

understandable.
not quiet and not loud or over powering.and most importantly no

underwater sound effects.
i then proceeded to move along the screen using the screen reader and

this was much better.
i could do with just one more adjustment perhaps but that would only be

to change microphones over to a uni directional one.
so i am i would say 85 percent of the way to correcting this rather

long winded and ongoing problem.
but 85 percent from yesterday is much better than no percent or even

minus 10 of which i was before yesterday
i can live with that.
so a small adjustment in sounds and audio devices and moving the

microphone from the back to the front of the computer provided the

solution to the mystery that no one was able to solve
but many thanks to all who did suggest possible things that may help
and of course apologized for conducting a biography rather than a quick

answer to inform all the list that i am now back up and running
thank you
Yvonne

Well, I feel odd taking credit for another's efforts, so I guess you should
thank the W7Starter's list as this is where I learned this after hours of
struggling myself. In fact this is where I've learned most of what I know

2011-01-01 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
I'll have to wait until someone is around to read the thing. There
were several selections on the site.

Hi Andre,
I probably could have but I had an opportunity to purchase 6 of
these cards on Amazon for $11 with free shipping. The USB card has
buttons to adjust the volume and it's very convenient. It also has
a microphone jack.

I believe you could have done this without purchasing the external sound
card. I was able to do this with a USB headset.

So I could have JAWS coming out of the external card with a headset
and music coming out of my speakers.

Hi all,
In case anyone is wondering if this worked, it did, like a charm.
I love this list.

 Hi Betsy,
Go to Sounds and Audio Devices in the control panel, and then move
 to the audio tab.
Here you can set your default playback device, to the one your
 speakers are connected to.
If you need more details let us know.

Running XP Home and JAWS 12.

Before I started this I went to JAWS, Utilities then Sound Cards
 and there were two item:
 Windows Default and
 Vinyl AC'97 Audio (wave)

I plugged the USB sound card into the 4 port USB hub and all went
 welland then it showed .
 USB Head set
in the list of sound cards. I checked the Head Set item and JAWS is
coming through fine, but when I try to play something in Media
Player the music also comes through the USB Head Set sound card.
How do I get the Media Player to play through my speakers again?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Web page to plain tex help please

2011-01-01 Thread Jacob Kruger
All you really need to do if you just want to read it in clean text format,
is file menu, save as... and in the resulting dialogue, you can change the
save as combo box to just plain text only, or something like that depending
on your browser version, etc.

Stay well

Firstly, happy new year and heart felt thanks to you all for your help,
discovering this site genuinely changed my life last year, I no longer
feel alone and such a fool.
What I needed was some help with copying a webpage and then reading it
in a plain text format.
I use Jaws 11 and have 12 available but would prefer to use 11 right now,
any thoughts most appreciated.
