If you have not used skype before, head over to

www.skype.com

and download the latest version.

If you have used skype before, you may want to consider getting an
older version that you are more familiar with. Also, if you have an
older generation netbookwith xp and maybe only one gig of ram, you
may want to consider using skype 3.8.

jaws already comes with some basic configuration and script files
for skype out of the box. It is usable without scripts but you may
want to Mr. Doug Lee's scripts for skype for added functionality and
ease of use or use skypetalking instead or additionally.

Google for something called Tor Browser. This
is free also and allows to hide the ip address
for unblocked browsing. It is bundled with
Firefox and therefore works fine with jaws. It
can even be run portably from a flash drive. the
installed version also allows for instant

 Hi Kimsan!
I guess it should work fine unblocking sites at workplaces etc. After
installing it just sits in the background and you can access it from the
systray where you can connect/disconnect when you need; can't remember
anymore how it's set on default after the
installation. And yes, if you find
out you don't like it you can always
uninstall it like most programs via the

Yes, I used it for some time and it was great but now it doesn't seem to

it's a program to hide IP addresses so you can access sites without

Not sure about quitter but dropbox has a checkbox for starting with
widnows in its preferences. With dropbox this is found on the startup
tab. (Use your mouse ccursor to get to the general tab from the

There are other ways and utilities to prevent a program from coming

turning it off thru msconfig.

Re: [Blind-Computing] RAR to MP3

2011-10-19 Thread Doris and Chris

You cannot convert .rar to .mp3

.rar is an archive format while .mp3 is a compressed audio format.

You need to extract your .rar archive to get to the files within. If
this is supposed to be an audio book, then chances are that you'll
find your mp3 files contained within the .rar archive.

.rar is another form of archive, similar to but not the same as .zip.
You'll need a decompression program to extract your .rar archive. One
that is fre and very accessible is 7-zip from

http://www.7-zip.org/

just install with the defaults and you should be good to go. 7-zip
does not take over file associations as some other decompression
utilities do. when you have 7-zip installed, you should find it in
the context menu when you right-click on the .rar archive. Pick
extract and you should be able to get to your book.

Please. This is a free program. You know the name of the program,

As pointed out earlier, this is an advanced registry cleaner and you

how to do a websearch, i personally would strongly advise against
using this type of tool. this is not a tool to use for computer newbies.

Doing a websearch is one of the basic computer skills anyone with
internet access should have or develop I think. There are good
tutorials on use of the internet available out there If you really
have a need for such. come back on this list and i am sure ppl can
provide assistence. And again, if you do not know how to perform a
websearch for a program whose name and function you are, I'd never
want the responsibility of providing you with a program that can
potentially do harm to your computer if it is not used wisely and
also with a knowledge of how to undo changes.

It is always a personal decision and one that should be made
knowing the risks involved and the benefits.

I consider myself a power user and I do tweak a system to my liking

advanced settings like virtual memory, programs loaded at startup

even totally removed some components like Dr. Watson or wmp. I use
tweaking tools for this sort of thing and I do so knowing that, for
example, totally removing wmp may interfere with some functionality
like playing of some wmp based streams.

Anyway, it is each user's responsibility to learn as much as they
want aand need to about their systems and what they want to accomplish.

I think it is important to caution people of possible consequences

Re: [Blind-Computing] memo about the guidelines / Concerning CrossPosting

2011-10-06 Thread Doris and Chris
The usual definition of crossposting is adressing the same message
to more th an one recipient with the very same message. This is
considered lack of nettiquette on most mailing lists. One reason for
this is that it messes up people's mail filters by triggering several
all at once. If the same message is to be sent to different mailing
lists someone is subscribed to, they ought to open and address a new
message for each separate list.

I later saw Mr. Tekkie Dave's post to the jaws user list where he did
mention crossposting and asked whether or not it was ok to use the
bcc field for addressing messages.this would be ok on most lists
but I do not know how Mr. David interprets this for his lists.

So if in doubt, just address two different email messages to the
lists you want to post to and copy and paste the mesage text in the
respective body of the message. Nobody controls how many lists you
are subscribed to and, of course, it is absolutley noone's business
what message you post to which independent list as long as you send
separate messages to separate mailing lists.

the program should at least offer a trial version so you can check it
out how well it works and how accessible it is. Whether or not you
consider a program accessible or not, also is largely a personal
thing. some people will want or need to be able to cover everything
by tabbing and clicking while others are comfortable using their
screenreaders mouse emulation and screen review cursor. Additionally
you may want to google for reviews of any program you may want to use.

Personally, I am cheap and a fairly proficient computer user. So I go
for free programs and will consider anything that can be used with
the mouse emulation if needed.

a good starter for a registry cleaner is c-cleaner (get the slim
versionwithout a toolbar. It offers registry cleaning as wel as a
bunch of other cleaning options. I do use c-cleaner but for the most
part and longest time use a program called abexo registry cleaner.
Googling for Abexo free registry cleaner should get you what you
need. Abexo is a very thorough cleaner that works from win 95 up; I
have had no way to test it under anything beyond xp.

As I said, I have used registry cleaning tools for almost as long as
we have had windows computers and never had a problem but once. That
one time was pretty hefty, though, and I would have been in big
trouble if I had not been using a hardware synthesizer at the time. I
had uninstalled some sound related software and when running Abexo
after uninstalling the program, Abexo was a little too thorough and
cleaned out some parts of my soundcard driver that the program in
question must have overwritten (it was one of those that installed a
virtual sound device). After the cleanup and subsequent reboot, my
computer was dead silent and I needed to reinstall my sound
drivers. Using my hardware synth and knowing how to deal with driver
installs and troubleshooting such a problem, it was no big deal for
me. However, someone relying on software speech on a single soundcard
would have been in big trouble and would have needed sighted
assistence to restore the computer.

So while in most cases it is good and appropriate to run a registry
cleaning tool on a regular basis,

Whether or not a lay person should use any kind of registry
cleaning software is subject to debate and you will find some
people who tell you not to clean your registry at all. It is true
that monkeying around in your registry can render your computer
unoperational at worst.

With this warning up front, i have used registry cleaning tools for
just about as long as I have used a computer that uses a registry.
g IN the good old win 9x. days, Mickysoft themselves had a free
registry tool for download. this does not work anymore on versions
of windows newer than 2k, I believe.

As to when to clean your registry, many consider this a part of
regular computer maintenance and how often you clean out your
registry largely depends on how often you change something on your
computer that writes to the registry. Computer maintenance includes
other tasks as well such as defragging (and there are some that
tell you not to defrag a computer either), running your antimalware
and antivirus software, etc.

Your registry is written to each time you install a program, change
a file association, have a program store a setting in the registry,
etc. when you, on the other hand, uninstall a program, often
orphan keys are left behind in the registry that are no longer
needed but take up space and have the computer do more work when it
scans the registry for information.Additionally, even when
information is deleted from the registry when uninstalling a
program etc, holes are left in the registry similar to when you
delete a file from your hard drive. When you run a registry

longer connected to anything you have installed or set on the
computer. and it takes those parts out and thus eliminates
redundant information the computer goes thru each time it accesses
the registry. Ideally, after you ran your registry cleaning tool,
you should also defrag your registry to align everything nicely and
streamline it by getting rid off empty spaces in the registry
caused by either uninstalling a program, etc. or by the work of the
registry cleaner itself when it deleted unnecessary information.

If you decide to run a registry cleaner, make sure you create a
restore point beforehand and also back up your registry before
running the cleaner. A good registry cleaner will either
automatically create a backup of your current settings of the
registry befoer changing anything or it will at least offer to do so.

As to which registry cleaner to use, this is largely a matter of
choice that depends on a few of your personal preferences,

Waht version of jaws do you use on what flavor of windows? System
restore, the creation of a restore point in particular, is very
straight forward at least under my xp system and since this is
straight Mickysoft, I would have expected it to be so under newer
versions of windows also.

If your version of jaws doesn't read portions of system restore, grab
a copy of nvda from

www.nvda-project. org and use it for those tasks your version of jaws
can't handle. nvda is free and open source and is constantly being

If this has happened, however, the functionality can be turned back

Re: [Blind-Computing] Virtual Audio Cable

2011-09-16 Thread Doris and Chris
What do you want to use the program for? I have never used it myself
but researched it some a while ago.

The basic purpose I understood it to have was to give you a way to
intermix audio on machines whose audio driver lacks the stereo mix,
wave-in or, on Creative Cards, the what you hear option.

The name virtual cable refers to the programs ability to sort of
wire different audio inputs together.

One application of the stereo mix functionality is playing music in
some chat rooms by playing directly into the soundcard rather than
thru the microphone.

The program comes with a pretty extensive help file if I remember
correctly that should explain what it does and how to set it up.

If you decided to start from scratch, install jaws 13 first as the

intercept present should not try to install its own but use the one
from jaws 13.

Only other thing am still thinking of trying to do right now is to
uninstall both versions of jaws, install video card driver itsself,
and then try either of the versions of jaws themselves to see what
happens, but let's see...

The convenient OCR idea is something would really like to try/test

Ok, just downloaded and installed the jaws13 beta test package, and what
it's done is interfere with the mirror display/video intercept of jaws 12,
no matter if I try running repairs on either version, uninstall jaws 13,
reinstall jaws 12, etc. etc.

This is on my windows7 ultimate 64 bit machine, with an nvidia GeForce video
card, but unless can sort it out soonish, really don't think will be trying
out beta on other machine combo's as such, since bit irritating.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

2011-08-26 Thread Doris and Chris
Not if you do not open a program or program window from the desktop
or start menu where you can set how to open it. One of the most
popular uses for autosizer used to be for Outlook Express's message
widnows that open as new windows on the task bar.

windows can be maximized thru a jaws script but not every application
is scripted and not everyone knows how to script. With today's gigs
of ram, having autosizer run in the system tray doesn't take up any
resources worth mentioning and even more than ten years ago when ram
was still measured in megs and much more precious, autosizer was
always one of the programs I put on first on a fresh install of
windows. i have used it for more than 10 years and hope there will be
a version eventually that works in win 7 should i ever upgrade to that.

For general disk burning, most versions of windows thmselves are pretty
usable, and if you insert a blank disk in, then explore it and paste
files that you previously collected into one location for simplification

[Blind-Computing] HD Problem: 2nd NTFS Bookt Sector Is Unwritable

2011-08-12 Thread Doris and Chris
A couple of months ago, we bought a 2 TB WD Elements usb external
hard drive when our previous large external was giving out.

I was able to transfer the stuff on the old drive to the new 2tb and
all seemed fine. Problems started when I needed to reinstall windows
after running into a major issue with my jaws video intercept that I
could not get fixed after wrestling with it for half a week.

I have an unattended disk with driver packs for xp and usualy
reinstalling windows is fairly easy. This time, however, the computer
kept hanging at bootup. The problem may have been that we left the
externals connected and turned on while reformatting and
reinstalling. We swapped around the drive letters and Chris corrected
the boot sequence and hard disk priority in cmos.

When this did not correct the problem, we re-reformatted
and reinstalled windows again, this time disconnecting all the
peripherals before installation and putting them back one at a time.

All went well until we reconnected this 2 tb wd external. When we
did, the computer again hung on bootup.

I researched the problem and eventually found out in some online
forum that apparently some of the cheep wd externals sold as My
Book and especially this really low-end elements model caused the
handing problem at bootup on some computers. The problem is a
conflict between the hd's firmware and the firmware on the
motherboard. updating the MOtherboard's firmware is not an option
because it is a cheapie ASRock board that did not have many firware
updates and already came with what is still the latest firmware
revision for it when we bought it several years ago.

Chris finally transplanted the hd into a new usb enclosure and this
solved the bootup problem.

However, yesterday I had trouble accessing the drive and when I ran

chkdsk /f /r

on it

it eventually told me that

the second ntfs boot sector is unwritable:

Partition magic sees the disk as unpartitioned and unformatted. Thus
I am sure that reformatting and repartitioning the drive would fix
the problem with the boot sector. It would not, however, fix the
problem of there being nearly a TB of audio books and other goodies
on that drive that we have no other place to store on nor the funds
to buy a new hard drive at this time.

Is there any way to restore the boot sector to what it is supposed to
be without losing the data on the drive? any help and suggestions on
this would be more than welcome.

Thanks bunches

Re: [Blind-Computing] ALTERNATE WINDOWS SOUND SCAPES

2011-07-31 Thread Doris and Chris
You actualy should be able to change any sound of any sound scheme to
what you want it to be. I do not know about win 7 but in xp this is
done in the sound and audio applet from control panel.

When you select your sound scheme, you are also given a list of all
the sounds in it and are able to tab thru the options. You are able
to manually select a sound for each event in the sound scheme.

Safe your existing sound scheme before you make changes though.

Have fun!

Hi everyone,

This is so weird! I'm writing this note and something is going on in the
background. The Andre Lewis thing is telling me by making clicking and
clunking sounds. At first, they are somewhat disconcerting but I'll bet I
get used to them. Now, if I could only modify that closing sound and put
something else there.

Thanks everyone for your help. This is fascinating.

[Blind-Computing] Shutting Down skype 5.5

2011-07-30 Thread Doris and Chris
while still on skype 3.8 for my installed version of skype, I wanted
to try out the portable version of skype 5.5 with its facebook integration.

I found that when trying to shut down skype 5.5 from the system tray,
it locked up speech (jaws) and some parts of windows apparently
necessitating a reboot to get back to normal.

I then created a batch file to shut down skype with the /shutdown
parameter. This worked in that it brought up the console briefly and
I heard the sound for a program being shut down but when I looked, I
still saw an icon for skype in the system tray with its state showing
as not logged in. When I tried to close this out, I had the lockup
syndrome again with speech shutting down on me. I finally killed the
skype process in task manager with sighted assistence and this
brought jaws back.

Can anyone confirm this difficulty shutting down skype 5.5 - and
potentially earlier 5.x versions as I had not tried skype 5.x in a
long while - or is this something particular to my machine?

I am using win xp sp3.

Thanks much

Doris

Re: [Blind-Computing] Scripts with JAWS portable version:

2011-07-26 Thread Doris and Chris
You will have to manually input your script files into the script
directory. For an English version of jaws, the script directory is

X:\jawsXX\settings\enu

where :\ is the drive letter of the drive you have your portable jaws on and

jawsXX is the jaws version number.

This is the folder hierarchy jaws used to come in prior to version
6.x. There are no user specific script folders but only one script directory.

Hi,Brad,

Try if

alt+shift+f4(twice quickly)

will still exit skype. The above hotkey was in the skype scripts a
while back when the system tray was not accessible to screenreaders.
Otherwise you can always shut skype from task manager
(ctrl+shift+escape to bring up task manager)

I am not sure, though, what your question has to do with the mesage you quote.

Take care ...

In general, a program's options is usually the place where such

are Ppreferences or settings. Most often you can find the options

Re: [Blind-Computing] Change in message checking option

2011-07-08 Thread Doris and Chris
Let's take this nice and slow. so you are talking about Email
messages that your computer checks for and downloads for you at set intervals?

what is your computer's operating system (which version of Windows or
Linux, for example windows xp or widnows 7 or Vinux or Debian, and
what email program do you use? Your computer needs an email client to
get your email and send out any messages you write. Examples for
email clients are Thunderbird, Eudora, Outlook Express, etc.

I just had a quick look at your email headers and saw that you are
using Outlook Express version 6.0. This means you are on windows xp or earlier.

I am not an OE but Eudora user but I easily found where you can
change your mail check frequency settings.

Do the following:

1. Bring up Outlook Express by starting it from either the desktop
icon or from the Start Menu.

2. Go to

tools/options

3. Focus will be on the general tab. This is the tab you want.

4. hnow tab till you find the checkbox that says check mail every.
If this is checked, the next control you tab to will be the edit
combo where you set the time interval in minutes at which OE checks
for mail on your isp's server.

5. enter the mumeric value for the minutes for how often you want OE
to check mail, i.e. you currently should have it set to 30 minutes.
If you want mail checked more frequently, enter the number of minutes
for this, i.e. 5 for every five minutes or 10 for every ten minutes etc.

6. tab to the apply button and hit your spacebar on it.

7. tab to ok and hit your spacebar on OK and you are done.

Your computer, using Outlook Express, which is your email program,
will now check email every number of minutes you set it to above.

lPlease remember when asking for help to be as specific as possible
as you can. We all want to help but please help does not give us
enough information. *smile*

Take care ...

Re: [Blind-Computing] old software

2011-07-08 Thread Doris and Chris
Just from the name of the program, I would guess that 'Scan to text
is an ocr program. You might want to plug that into google and see
what you find. I am not familiar with the program and do not know if
it would work with speech.

[Blind-Computing] Booksense User List? Firmware Upgrade

2011-07-07 Thread Doris and Chris
Is there a Booksense Bookreader user mailing list? Or are questions
about this gadget appropriate for this list?

Briefly, I am currently negotiating purchase of such a used
Bookreader device and need to find out if i can flash the firmware
back to the U.s. American one as the Booksense would be used to read
materials in English. the device is currently running a European
bilingual firmware and was origianlly purchased in November of 2009.

Thanks much.

Doris
