Re: [Blind-Computing] Cannot activate some links in I.E. 8
Hi all, Annette, in addition to what other listers have suggested, try these alternatives: Sometimes, you may need to press insert plus f7 and click on the desired linkfrom within the list of links to make it work. Another solution you may try is to tab or shift tab away from the link, then tab back to it and press enter. Remember, don't use the arrow keys, use tab instead. Jaws uses a vertual buffer which sometimes doesn't interact properly with some of the webpage elements. Hope that helps! Hamid AITOUZNAG "We never value what we have until we lose it!" When I hear JAWS announce that I am on a link, I press the Enter key. In more and more situations, nothing happens. I have tried using the applications key and have found that Open is not a choice on the menu until I have attempted at least once to use the Enter key to activate the link without success. So the sequence looks like this: . Navigate to the desired link . Activate the application menu and find that open is not on the menu. . Press Escape to close the applications menu. . Ensure that I am really on the link. . Press the Enter key to try and activate the link. . If nothing happens, activate the applications key. . Select Open, Open in new tab or Open in new window, and then press the Enter key. . The link is now activated and the new page is opened. I am using I.E. 8, Office 2010, and JAWS 12 on a Windows7 64bit computer. I've even tried JAWS 11. I have not gotten around to trying JAWS 13. Does anyone have any ideas to why this is happening? Is it a JAWS issue, an I.E. issue or a Security setting? Is there a way to change it? Otherwise, it would depend on the capabilities of your soundcard. Keep in mind, when making an audio tutorial, that even if you get your voice and Jaws to about the same volume level, if you talk at the same time Jaws is, people with hearing difficulties, such as myself, might have trouble hearing Jaws. Actually, when I record, I don't have Jaws in the foreground, because I want the listener to hear what I am saying, and other screen-readers won't say things exactly the same as Jaws anyway. Re: [Blind-Computing] Jumping to a time in Gold Wave
Hi, Concerning your questtion, you should know that goldWave uses three different play buttons; each one of them plays from a different spot in the file. One plays the file from the beginning regardless of where the markers are located. The other plays the area between the markers and the third plays only from the current cursor location. Those buttons are accessed from the keyboard using the F2, F3 and F3 keys. I guess that you have used only F4 or space bar to play the file. Try the other buttons to notice the difference! Re: [Blind-Computing] program sound
Hi Anna, I guess you are using a windows seven machine. If so: *Open your volume control found in the system tray or hit windows + r and type the following: sndvol * Tabbing around this dialog, you'll find 2 controlls for each single program you're running at that time on your machine. The first controll is a slider that allows you to lower and raise the volume of that specific program. The second is a button that will mute and unmute the application. For example, you'll find that Jaws has its own controlls in case you wanted to mute it or lower its volume independently. The same applies for each application that is running on your machine. Keep tabbing around that dialog until you reach a slider that is specific for your anti-virus, you are more likely to found that it got lowered somehow. Use your up arrow to ajust it it as you like and hit alt f 4. You are done Lady! Hope that helps! Hamid AITOUZNAG "We never value what we have until we lose it!" Re: [Blind-Computing] recording while creating a tetorial
Hi everyone, To record tutorials on my windows 7 machine, 32 bits, I do one of the following: 1. Since i don't have a volume mixer on my laptop, i record with goldWave by enabling both internal and external microphones, that way, i could record my voice via the external mic whereas the built-in microphone picks easily what's coming out of the laptops speakers. 2. Using totalRecorder, it is easier as the program itself allows you to either record only from your mic, from your soundCard, or both of them. If you choose the latter, total recorder will record everything that streams through your sound card in addition to your voice. You can even play something in the background while recording using any of the media players installed on your machine. Ah. I found total recorder to be the best to record skype calls as well. So much better than most recorders i've tried in the past. Hope that helps Hamid AITOUZNAG "We never value what we have until we lose it!" Hi Lloyd, I am not aware of the recommendation you mentioned, however, i guess there are many programs that can do the job. I have Kurzweil which is a paid for program. Yet Recently, I came across a great free program called Balabolka. This program can convert to Wav and MP3 and other formats. It supports PDF, html, txt and many other formats. In my opinion, it is faster and better than Kurzweil in terms of converting. I converted 55 PDF pages to MP3 in less than 2 minutes. I don't have the website but I can send you a direct link to download the program. Contact me off list if you are interested. Hi folks, If everything is unavailable, that means either no file is open or the file format is not supported. I am having no problems here as long as the format is supported. Tab one time from the search edit field. It will say category button. This in fact tells you the view and if pressed opens a context menu. 3. In this context menu, down arrow to large or small icons and press enter. 4. There you have it, a sort of XP-like Control Panel. Hope this helps. Hello Pete, I have it installed yet i rarely use it. Just wait for other replies and see what they have to say. Meanwhile, I would suggest a very good program to play your videos. It is called Media Player Classic - Homecinema. It is a freeware and and has a lot of built in keyboard hotkeys. It is my prefered program for playing videos. Note that it comes as a part of a bunche of programs including realAlternative and others i don't recall now. Google it or contact me off list if you are interested. Good luck! Re: [Blind-Computing] Problem, F2 Key does not work
Hello, I wanted to add that I guess the key functions, the problem is that jaws loses focus and cannot read the selected text. I said this because our friend said that Jaws echoes the word 'edit' which means the key functions well. To check if what I said is correct, type something in the field once you hear jaws says edit and hit enter. Then check if the file has been renamed or not. Let us know please.. Re: [Blind-Computing] MSE download links
Hi Marilyn, What did you mean by MSI has gone? I don't expect it to be uninstalled by its own, i guess you mean that the message on the system tray said that your machine isn't protected anymore, if it is the case, the reason probably is that your MSI is not updated. I encountered a similar issue some days ago when MSI kept prompting me to update my product, however, as soon as i click on update, i get another error message saying that it was not possible to update and that i had to restart my machine and try again. I went this same procedure for a day or 2 then a friend suggested that i might uninstall and reinstall the new program not just updating the virus dataBase through the program, so I did and everything is fine now! I am really happy with MSI so far, compared to all those programs i had before, it prooves to be doing its job without interupting your work all time with nonsense messages. Re: [Blind-Computing] Changing computer name
Hi, I guess you are using XP, if so, here is what to do, I hope i don't commit any mistakes as i am using windows seven now, hopefully someone else will confirm and/or correct me: 1. Open your start menu and locate your "my computer". 2. Press your application key and down arrow til you hear send to subMenu and open it with enter or right arrow. 3. I guess you will land on an option that reads "deskTop create an icon" or something similar. If it is not the first item in the subMenu, arrow up or down til you reach it and hit enter on it. 4. Go back to your deskTop and find the icon there. Be careful, the new icon might not be named "my computer", you might find it with some words added to the beginning: for example, you might find it named: "icon of my computer" or "shortCut of my computer". If the above steps work, you can even assign a hotKey to your "my computer" icon so that you can open it with one keyStroke. If you need help doing that later, just let us know. I hope that helps, and sorry for any mistakes as i don't have XP here and please forgive any errors in the translation i used to have a French version of XP not an english one. Re: [Blind-Computing] Jaws curser
Hi Lori, Before using the caps lock + P to activate jaws cursor, you need first to take the following steps so that your installed jaws allow you to do so on your laptop: 1. press insert + j followed by enter to open the options submenu. 2. You will land on Basic opetions which is the first item in the option subMenu, press enter again on it. A dialog will open. Keep pressing tab til you hear keyboard layout. It is a combo Box that you can navigate with your arrow keys. press down arrow til you hear jaws reads laptop. Precede to ok with your tab key then hit enter. Now you are done, you should be able to use caps lock as your insert key. If you keep it held and press P, that will activate your jaws Cursor. Hope that helps Hamid AITOUZNAG "We never value what we have until we lose it!". Re: [Blind-Computing] Jaws scripts won't run
Lori, You're getting the ajust verbosity dialog in stead of the application version only because jaws couldn't recognize that you were pressing control besides insert and V, keep trying and you'll get it done. If it keeps like that, unload jaws and then reload it. Concerning skype, you have to do some configuration in order for the chat windows to appear in a seperate window, to do that, press alt + v for view, then arrow up til you hear compact view and press enter. if you hear default view, then you are already in compact view. To make sure you have successfully installed jaws scripts, while onthe skype window, press insert plust H. Hope that helps Hamid AITOUZNAG "We never value what we have until we lose it!". Probably you have checked the mixer checkBox in windows volume control. I am sorry i can not give a detailed solution as i am not using vista, but i guess that you have the stereo mixer checked, that's why people can not hear you as your sound card exports only the sound that it produces from inside and not the sound that comes through the microphone. Download the program and install it. precede with the steps to get connected to the other computer. Then try what i have said and you'll get it... Hi Arianna, Yeah, that's exactly what you want, you want to hear the other machine's Jaws speaking so that you know what's going on on the distant computer. You don't need your jaws while working on the other machine. As soon as you get your job done, swich to your computer by hitting the scroll lock. Another thing folks, while manipulating the distant machine, you will not be able to use alt tab to swich between the open windows in your client's computer, you should first hit windows key + tab once, then releace them and start using alt tab just then. If you start alt tabbing without hitting the mentioned keystroke first, you can not swich between open applications. Again, sorry if i am a bit confused in guiding you, but that's how i learned it, just by experementing Good luck Hamid AITOUZNAG Skype: hamidgeni MSN: hamid.ma...@hotmail.com Twitter: hamidgeni On 29/06/2010 15:44, Arianna Calesso wrote: Hamid, I tried team viewer and was able to get into another computer. Oh Rick, Sorry if i didn't make that clear enough in my previous messages. Yeah, your client should have jaws installed as while working on your keyboard, it's the distant machines jaws that you hear not yours reading the other screen. I didn't try this with any other screen reader. Another thing, once you have access to the other computer, you should move your focus to a window called TV something, i can not remember exactly what it said. that's of course if you have other open windows in your computer, that TV window is the vertual screen of your client. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask Good luck Hamid AITOUZNAG Skype: hamidgeni MSN: hamid.ma...@hotmail.com Twitter: hamidgeni On 29/06/2010 13:06, Rick Watson wrote: Hi Hamid, Unfortunately when I connect to the other computer and press the scroll lock, I still cannot read their screen. Ok, i said that you press the scroll lock in your keyboard to pass on your keystrokes to the distant machine. Once done, press the scroll lock again to take hold of your machine again. By the way, as soon as you gain access to the other machine, and after touching any key on the keyboard, you'll get a prompt asking you to press the scroll lock twice to disable your keyboard's machine, however, from my experience, i noticed that pressing the scroll lock just once does the job. Sure you have to! There is a utility that you have to install as a controller and you can give the same utility to your client or you might just send him a very small piece of software to install on his/her computer, however, then he/she will not be able to exchange roles Controller/client with you! After installing the application, he/she must send you a computer ID and a password to be able to take hold of his/her machine. As I mentioned previously, this software is free to use for personal purposes. Ok Mike, Follow these steps: 1. press insert plus J to get the jaws' options dialog. then arrow down to utilities and press enter. Arrow down till you reach jaws configuration manager and hit enter. 2. Once inside the configuration window, hit alt plus s to open the settings' menu, then hit the letter v to open the verbosity dialog. You'll land on a set of radio buttons that controls which verbosity level you want to set. You should know beforehand which level of verbosity you are on. Then tab to the preferences of the level you want to change. As you might know, jaws offers 3 verbosity levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Press enter on the button you want to modify its options and a new dialog will pop up. 3. Now, hit the letter T to jump to a checkBox called toolTip and check it with space. tab to Ok and press enter. You are back in the first dialog, tab to ok and hit space bar to close it. 4. Press control plus s to save your modifications and hit alt plus F4 to close the configuration window. Remember, you should use the verbosity level which you modified not another one. I mean, if you have checked the toolTip for the beginner level, the new changes will effect your jaws behavior only if you are using that verbosity level. Now, whenever yu land on a file or folder while arrowing, you'll hear a banch of information to that file or folder. However, give jaws room to announce those informatio... Re: [Blind-Computing] WinAmp installation
You'd better install one of the latest versions of Winamp, not version 2 which is an old one. The newer versions have more features and work very well in terms of accessibility. I had version 5.35 installed in my machine for years, however, i've upgraded to version 5.572 recently. This latter works quite well except that i need to rely on jaws cursoring while assigning hotkeys. Jaws has built-in scripts for winamp that allow you to get very useful information quickly, but still there is a very good script developed by ultra universe which give you a better experience using winamp; as it offers additional facilities and keystrokes. As for WMP, i really don't like it as I have to tab all along the window to get to do something easy like forwarding ... Winamp really is the best for me Hope this helps Hamid AITOUZNAG Skype: hamidgeni MSN: hamid.ma...@hotmail.com Twitter: hamidgeni On 19/06/2010 13:49, Mike & Barbara wrote: Hi All; I am thinking about installing WinAmp 2.80. Re: [Blind-Computing] can someone please helpmeregardingmylaptopand the C:drive.
Thanks a lot Ishe for your explanations. i have suffered a lot from the autoruns that prevent my drives from being opened pressing enter. At times, i could fix the problem manually by removing the autorun, at others, i just couldn't, i had to reformat my machine to get red of them. Now i got a hold of a great small utility called autorunRemover that blocks the spreading of autorun files during the excution of USB drives. But the commands you told us here will be of great use if something happened again to me or to those I know. Thanks a lot again Hamid AITOUZNAG Skype: hamidgeni MSN: hamid.ma...@hotmail.com Twitter: hamidgeni On 19/06/2010 07:33, Ishe Chinyoka wrote: Hi You're welcome. I'm sorry that I did not explain in my initial post what was taking place. The regsvr32 is just your system's server for all the DLLs. The DLL files contain some code to be executed across applications. They do not have main entry points such as the executables (.exe), so they have to be called by running program. Two interesting examples of code contained in DLL are the management of Open and Save files and handling of SSL connections by some programs. Unless a DLL file is registerd by the regsvr32, it cannot function. In the case of the shell32.dll, it is the one that is responsible for the smooth running of the main shell. Many programs make use of this DLL--examples are the file managers (7zip File Manager comes to mind). Some viruses may attack or corrupt your factory DLLs. This is so with some rogue autorun.inf that execute some malicious apps. So we want to correct the behaviour of our shell by reinstalling its DLLs. In fact, there are some registry tweaks you can play with, but due to the nature of this list where we have beginners, intermediate and advanced computer users play along with each other, I tend to avoid getting into these as they may compromise our machines. Since the problem in question called for urgent response, it was safe just to state the actions to be taken without giving so many explanations. Re: [Blind-Computing] Finding the total run time of a group of songs
I don't Know of an easy way to tell you the total run time of MP3 and other audio formats. However, you can do some calculations regarding one of the files you have. Try to calculate how many mega bites you have in a file for each minute, then you can guess how long the total run time. However, be careful, you should consider the differences between various formats, for example, the wave format is generally around ten times the size of the mp3 format. Alternatively, you can open the folder containing the files, keep tabbing while in the list view till you hear "play all" and press enter, the files will start playing one after the other, if Winamp is your media player by default, you can just keep pressing control plus shift plus the letter t at the beginning of each file to hear the remaining time of the current truck, to jump to the next truck, just press the letter b and again check the remaining time. If the files you are playing are not too many, you could use this method. By the way, you must be running jaws for the second method to work... I knew that both ways are time consuming, however, i don't know of a better way, hope someone else has an easier way...
