Re: [Blind-Computing] blackboard assessability

2013-03-21 Thread John M.

Jamie,
I just completed a degree through Charter Oak State College and they use
Blackboard. For the most part, BB is accessible. One area where I ran into
problems is in the online exams. If an exam is timed, the constantly
updating on-screen timer steals focus away from Jaws and makes taking the
test using a screen reader impossible. The school is using an older version
of BB (version 9 SP 7) and the software is up to version 9 SP 11. Many
screen reader enhancements were made in SP 10. So, you will need to know
which version of BB is being used in order to judge what your ultimate
experience will be. In my case, I needed a sighted person to read/scribe the
online tests. The untimed tests were fine.

Also, navigating the discussion forums can be cumbersome.
If you have any other questions, please ask.
BTW, which school are you considering for your Masters?

Hi,

I am thinking of going back to school to obtain a master degree on-line.
I

see many of the universities use Blackboard to host their on-line content.
I am wondering if this interface is accessible for one using a screen
reader? I am using a windows 7 home premium 64 bit system. I have Jaws,
System Access, and NVDA as screen readers I can use. If the program is
accessible are there any tips in navigating the program? I thank you for
any information in this matter.

Stewart,

You've seen the answers from Rick Dave but there is another option
that I use but does require a bit of work. I have a spare Hard drive
that I have two partitions on. I keep by backup images on partition
2On partition 1 I keep a copy of my OS, basic programs, and Image for
Windows. If my C drive ever becomes corrupt or whatever, all I do is
pop the side cover off my computer and then unplug my C drive and hook
it up to the spare drive. Machine boots right up and runs fine. Then I
take a USB bridge adapter (think that is what the little rascal is
called) and hook it up to my C drive and then plug it into a USB port.
I then run the Image for windows program and select whatever image I
want to put back on the C Drive . When process is complete, simply
shut down and put everything back as normal and you are good to go. A
bit complicated but a doable option if you don't want to use DVD's

Simple really, I used maximum compression from with in the program
itself.
It offers several options from no compression at all, as such creating
the
image quite quickly to the max which is much slower. I used two single
sided
DVDs available at your local electronic store.

Note the version I used when I created tutorial one can't perform this
trick. That was 2.03 if memory serves. They are up to around 2.73 by
now. I
have been receiving free upgrades for over 4.5 years now.

You claim that you were able to squeeze 29 gb of data onto two DVD's.
How
did you accomplish this amazing feat? A standard single-layer,
single-sided
DVD can store approximately 4.7 gb of data, while a single-layer,
double-sided DVD can store 9.4 gb of data. So assuming you used two
single-layer, double-sided DVD's, you could only store a total of
about 19
gb of data. Did you use some hard-to-find double-layer, double-sided
DVD's,
which can hold about 18.5 gb each? Or did you perhaps use blue ray
disks,
which have a much higher storage capacity than standard DVD's, but are
much
more expensive and thus not really practical for frequent image
backups? Or
is there some magical technique for cramming more data onto a DVD than
it
can physically store? Just curious.

The program has changed slightly with some new features but it is

I like using maximum compression for my images. They take a bit

longer but

it minimizes the amount of DVDs you end up using. I just did an

Not too long ago somebody posted an address for a page to test if your
clip board was vulnerable or not. Well I took it upon myself to correct
some of the internal code on that page and post it on my own site. The
code displayed a warning message stating your clip board was accessed even
when it wasn't, so what I did was to make it show nothing when it couldn't
be accessed and show the contents of the clip board only when it was
accessed. It seems to be working as I want it to but if a couple of you
would test it out I would appreciate it.

http://www.jaws-users.com/text/Internet/ClipBoardCodeTest.html

Mind you what I know about that kind of scripting is quite limited but
figuring out somebody else's code is a lot easier than coming up with
something original. It is actually linked from a page that is labeled
something like clip board security or close to that any way. It is under
the internet heading on tips and tricks.

Make sure that your operating systems (Windows, OSX, Linux) is kept

The HP business class computers will typically outlast the consumer class
computers, given the same amount of use. This is from personal experience
and a good friend of mine is an HP repair tech. I have been using an HP
DC5000 business class desktop everyday for the past 6 years with no
problems. My sister and two other friends have HP consumer class laptops.
All three units are about 3 years old and all 3 have been returned to HP
multiple times for repair. One with display problems, one for overheating
and one for HD and DVD problems.

Honestly, any computer can and will fail. From a laptop perspective, I have
seen the best results with IBM/Lenovo. This is what I have been
recommending for all of my clients for the past couple of years and it
hasn't bitten me in the butt yet. (knock on wood). Of course, Apple
hardware is also very good and they have outstanding service and support.

Good luck,

Malwarebytes is blocking access to the indicated IP addresses and just

I do not believe that Malwarebytes blocks ports. Port blocking is normally
the function of a firewall. What message are you getting that makes you
believe that MWB is doing the blocking?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Are all Java updates safe to install?

2011-09-17 Thread John M.
This viewpoint might spark some controversy, but unless you are using
applications which require the Java Runtime Environment, you are better off
not having Java installed on your computer at all. This would minimize your
exposure to potential flaws and subsequent exploits in the JRE. I have been
running my systems without the JRE for about two years now, with no issues.
If you try to use an app which requires the JRE, it will tell you and you
can choose to install it at that time.

I have also taken this approach with all of my clients computers and have
had no negative feedback, yet.

I did not come up with this approach by myself. I got it from Steve Gibson
via the Security Now podcast. It made sense to me, so I have embraced it
and now endorse it.

Hi all,

I just got a notice that there was a new Java update to install. I went
ahead and installed it and then the screen asked me if I just wanted to
have Java updates installed automatically.

My question is should I go ahead and allow this, or should I be leery of
some Java updates?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Buying a printer

2011-09-10 Thread John M.

Hi,
I just bought my daughter the HP 1102w laser printer, as she just started
college. It will work wirelessly, as well as with a USB cable, which is
included. The printer is small, light and prints fast. Since it is a
laser, it will be much more economical to operate than a comparable inkjet
printer.
To setup the printer on your computer, all you need do is power on the
printer and connect the included USB cable between the printer and a Windows
computer. The setup program will automatically load and walk you through
the setup process. You can then configure the printer for use with
wireless, USB or both. I have run the setup program several times, using
both Jaws and NVDA and it worked well with both screen readers.

One note of caution, if you want to use the printer wirelessly with a Mac,
you will really need to do the printer setup using a Windows computer. This
will save you many headaches trying to accomplish this task on a Mac. Once
the wireless is setup using Windows, you place the setup CD into the Mac to
load the driver software. Now, the Mac will recognize the wireless printer
and work perfectly.

So far (1 week) my daughter is very pleased with the printer.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Looking for Accessible remote Access solution

Hi David,
I have successfully used a free LogMeIn account to remotely connect to a
computer running NVDA. I was then able to work on the remote computer with
the NVDA audio coming through my speakers.
In the past I had used the Serotek RIM product. It was very expensive and
not very reliable and very, very slow. I was impressed at how responsive
the NVDA audio was, over the LogMeIn connection.

Hi.
I am instructing a couple of students who are using the NVDA screen
reader. I'm trying to find a good, accessible remote access package which
would allow me to attach to their PC via the Internet similar to the way
Tandem operates with JAWS. I tried using Teamviewer and it is quite
amazing as well as free of cost. There are some accessibility issues that
I'm working with and I'm not yet sure if it will be a reliable solution.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for packages I could try?

I went to their site this morning and I agree with your findings. They must
have made recent changes to the site which now make it very inaccessible
with Jaws 10. This is very unfortunate, as the Southwest site was one of
the model sites that I use when demonstrating accessible verses
non-accessible sites to grad students in a Human/Computer Interaction class.

I recently read that Southwest maintained a phone number to relay

If you have Office 2003, then Outlook 2003 will be on the install CD. Just
rerun the Office setup from the original CD and select Outlook. If you do
not have the original install CD, you will have to purchase a replacement CD
from Microsoft, assuming that the copy you currently are using is a valid

1. Outlook is included in Office 2003 Standard and Pro.
2. As far as I have been able to find, Office 2003 is the
minimum that is
officially supported on Win 7. Office XP can be installed,
but has reported
issues with no work-around.
3. As far as I know, it can only be installed on one
computer. But, once I
open the package, I will have my wife read the license to
verify that fact.
If I recall, some MS products do allow you to install on
more than one
computer, as long as not more than one of the copies is
being used
concurrently. Not a problem for me, as I will only have one
computer
running Win 7. Next new computer is going to be a Mac.

installed it yet,
but I am in the process of upgrading my main computer from

Unfortunately, I

as I am always

Yes.
Export the address book as a .CSV file. You can then import the file into

Re: [Blind-Computing] Jaws not reading in google, update

2011-03-08 Thread John M.
I must have too much time on my hands, because I try to keep a log of all of
the changes that I make to my computer. This is a throwback to my old
mainframe days.

As I mentioned, this problem started occurring for me during March, 2010. I
tried many things to resolve the problem, including updating from Jaws 9 to
Jaws 10, with no success. On 9/1/2010, I removed Avast and installed MSE.
According to my notes, I also installed the latest FS video intercept on
that same day. I have not had the problem since then, but I don't know if
it was the Avast removal or the new video intercept which fixed the problem.

So my point, try installing the latest video intercept from FS and see what
happens. I don't believe that it can hurt the situation.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Jaws not reading in google, update

Dan,
Are you running the same version of Jaws on both computers? Did the problem
occur simultaneously on both systems? Do you normally use Firefox or IE? I
experienced the problem with both browsers.

It is strange that this problem only ever happened to me on the Google
search results page. That tells me that there is something in the HTML
coding on that page that is Tripping up Jaws with respect to the way it
interfaces with the browser.

At this point, I am just keeping my fingers crossed that this problem does
not reappear on my computer.

John,

Your system book keeping is impressive, and your data point is a good one.
However, I have never had avast on either of my computers, and on my
Windows 7 machine, the first JAWS installation was the latest build of
JAWS 11, so the video intercept is the latest version. and, I have the
latest version of MSE running on that box.

I just checked on my XP box, and the video intercept is up to date.

Sadly, your fix of removing avast and updating the video intercept is not
going to fix my problem since I don't have avast, and have the latest
video intercept.

Re: [Blind-Computing] realtime antivirus antispyware protection

Spyware Blaster does not run in the background. All it does is establish a

run it to update the list of nasty sites.

Hi Jackie,

Thanks for the explanation. That was great!

However, I still have one question. Would you consider Spyware Blaster to
be running real time? I do believe that it is always running in the
background and there is no way to do a scan of any type. It is supposed to
monitor spywares while you are on the Internet. What do you think?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenments. Take care.

opinion, if you were running both of these programs how would you run the
2?

Meaning, would you run 1 in Real Time not the other or, run both in Real
Time?

Mike, much depends on what the 2 programs do. Let me give a bit of
background, then perhaps, by way of that, address your question.

In the not so very distant past, spyware viruses were pretty much
distinct entities, the programs designed to protect the computer
from each did quite different things. Antivirus programs tended to
look for what's called file signatures, e.g., certain strings in
files that were suggestive of a virus, while antispyware programs
tended to monitor things like registry changes, where the browser was
being taken to, etc. That's fairly oversimplified, but the crux was
that 1 antivirus 1 antispyware program could generally run together
in realtime w/o conflict.

Malware has, unfortunately, become much more sophisticated. Viruses
drop trojans which create a backdoor into your computer allow all
kinds of information to be passed to some1, e.g., spyware. Thus, the
distinction between viruses spyware-- other types of malware, for
that matter--have blurred considerably over the past few years. The
result is that antivirus programs have evolved to become
antivirus/antispyware programs, trying to become, as it were, all
protection for all malware, all things to all people, etc.

The answer to your question is that it really depends on what the
programs do. If the antivirus program confines itself to looking for
file signatures, etc., while the antispyware program monitors registry
changes browser redirects, then it's probably safe. If, on the other
hand, the 2 programs monitor for similar things, then conflict can
does result. The problem further arises when both try to quarantine
something at the same time, obviously, it is for this reason that
malware experts suggest running only 1 realtime security suite type
program, e.g., antivirus/antispyware program, at any given time. What
I personally do is to run my antivirus/antispyware program (Avast) in
realtime. Then I scan w/Superantispyware or MalwareBytes weekly or so,
just to get rid of tracking cookies other annoying nasties that may
have popped up. BTW, 1 thing that can really help keep the bugs in
check is to simply delete your temporary internet files often--lots
lots of crap-ola gets in there.

So what I personally would do would be to run Microsoft Security
Essentials in realtime, let SAS be an on-demand scanner. I know some
listers have run both w/o difficulty, but I can't help wondering what
would happen if both try to quarantine the same threat--neither 1
might win your protection may well be compromised. I remember
getting this as a first exercise of my malware removal training,
this is pretty much how I answered it then, too, passed, so
hopefully it'll suffice.

I hope I've made myself sufficiently clear, invite further queries
if I haven't.

Blessings for a wonderful holiday season.

Hi,

I just installed the latest version of MSE on my wife's laptop using

on her computer.

She has the free version of SuperAntiSpyware and Spyware Blaster installed
on her computer.

According to the installation of MSE, it was recommended to uninstall all
other spyware programs since I suppose that there would be a conflict. I
think there should not be any other real time spyware running with MSE
which SuperAntiSpyware is not. However, Spyware Blaster is always running
in the background.

Does anyone know if this really cause a conflict and running MSE scan

are still on her computer and I would like to know what to do since I will
be eventually installing MSE on my desktop XP computer with the two same

Any suggestions and help will greatly be appreciated. Thanks and take

My question is:
Do other ISP providers have anti virus protection?
And if so, do they catch most viruses before they even reach your

Calculate Values On The Fly In Excel 2007

You can quickly calculate and display information about a selected group
of values on Excel's status bar, which is located at the bottom of each
worksheet. To do this, select the cells you want to add and then view the
total (Sum) on the status bar. But don't stop there. You can also display
a wealth of other information about a selection by right-clicking the
status bar and then choosing functions such as Average, Minimum, or
Maximum on the pop-up menu.

Hi, everyone,

I'm thinking of maybe upgrading to internet explorer 7. I'm using NVDA as
my main screen reader now. Will it work well with IE 7? I ask because now
when I go on some sites using IE 6, I get a message saying to send an
error report. Does this mean that IE 6 no longer works well with some
sites?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

I was needing to shake out the keyboard because a pretzel stick got lost

I pressed a button at the far right corner of the keyboard and discovered

So would there be a way to make this key and the rest of them not to work

And, no, I probably will not stop eating at my keyboard..

If someone could come up with a way That would allow a licensed user of

Yes the DOS and Linux CDs both require that you provide a serial when
creating the disk image. I have not had the guts to try a recovery using
the Linux CD without entering a serial! Unfortunately, this makes it very
hard to create a general Linux ISO that can be distributed that includes
speech. Personally, I am planning to create a Vinux live DVD or bootable
USB version of Vinux that has Image for Linux installed. This would
provide full speech right at startup with a GUI, disk forensic tools, Open
office, Firefox and more.

Perhaps it would be possible to develop a Linux script (like a DOS batch
file on steroids) to install Image for Linux onto Vinux. This would
require that every user download the Vinux ISO image, burn it to disk,
install it, run the script to create a new ISO, and then burn that ISO
image to a disk. Installing Vinux on a second partition would be
preferable, but many like me might install to a USB pen drive or just
download the Virtual Edition.

I hope this does not get too many people overly excited, because no one
has made it easy to install Image for Linux yet. But if you are
interested in this approach, you might want to check out working versions
of Vinux 2.0 at:

ok. One thing I noticed today was I put my DVD image disk
in while Windows was running and went through the menus for
restore options. I realize you cannot write back to the
primary partition windows is currently operating from but
what if you took a hard drive and hooked it up as another
drive then select it as the destination for the image. When
the image is done, use diskpart to make the partition it
went to active. Shut the system down and then plug this hard
drive in as the main drive and boot up the machine?

have found to date through research, and much trial error
is I have no trouble restoring an image as long as it goes
back on the same hard drive, in the same machine, and with
the same partitions in tact as when the image was created. I
have only used the optical drive so I cannot speak to
experiences using the DOS boot disk and then restoring the
image from another hard drive etc. In my case, I was able
to restore my system from the factory disks and then burn a
new image and successfully reuse that as often as needed.
However, as soon as I try using another hard drive, deleted
and then create a new partition, or make a partition larger
than what was present when creating the image it fails. Here
are my questions to those who use the program differently.
Is the DOS boot disk the program will create a generic Win
XP bootable disk or only applicable to the machine it was
created on? How much sighted assistance is needed with the
DOS restore option and what exactly is involved? With the
DOS option, can I restore from the DVD's I've already
created and would that possibly go onto the hard drive
whereas booting from the image DVD's will not? Let me know.

thanks
Al

I have not replaced a drive like you are attempting to do.
I do know that
Image for Windows is designed to do just that operation. In
fact, it should
also make replacing the drive with a larger drive a breeze.
I have also
heard Leo LePorte walk people through the process on his
The Tech Guy
radio show / podcast. He uses Image for Windows as well
(now a sponsor).

Perhaps your problem is that some manufacturers place a
fingerprint on the
drive. I do not know if they place this in the master Boot
Record, a small,
hidden partition or just within the main partition. Perhaps
a Google search
for replacing a drive for that manufacturer would provide
instructions. I
know I have run across similar instructions in the past.

David,

After doing some research yesterday, I believe the source

of

the conflict is in having multiple physical disk drives in
the machine I set the new image up in and then burned it.

As

you know, the BIOS assigns drive #'s and in my case the

0 1. My suspicion is that when I go to restore the image
it is looking for a device numbered the same as on the
image. That may or may not be so. I consistently get the
same message target device not found, press enter to
reboot. I'm wondering if the sightless restore of this
program is limited to only restoring the image on the same
physical drive it was created from? This has good utility

in

the event one's system gets screwed up and one wants to
simply lay down the unadulterated image again. However,

I'm

not sure of the program's utility in terms of laying down
the image on a different or newly purchased hard drive?

Have

you had success with this? Regarding your suggestions

below,

the format of the drive I don't think that would matter as
all info is erased and the image then is put down. The
format will be that of what the image is. The hard drive

is

the same brand but different size. I've played with many
options, even installing the image from the DVD onto the
extra drive while system is up and running. It installs

the

image ok, but when the hard drive is removed and put into
the other computer, the system won't boot. Keep the ideas
coming and I'll keep

Jon,

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll have to create a DOS bootable
CD and have my wife walk me through it. I believe David said
he thought you could only restore from an external hard
drive with this option. It would be nice if I could somehow
use what I've already created as it is a good image I don't
know of any way to get it from the DVD to an external hard
drive and then restore from that point using the DOS
program. I wish someone would come up with some type speech
device to use outside of Windows for when we are working in
the system CMOS or DOS

Al

PS Thanks again for you in-service on diskpart. I really
like that option

The Image for DOS boot disk can be run on any machine, it is
not machine
specific. Once booted, the DOS program works very much like
the Windows
program. You move from screen to screen, answering a series
of questions.
Once the restore is complete, you remove the CD, reboot the
computer and
your are back in business. If you are doing the DVD restore
with no sighted
assistance, then I am going to guess that there is an option
somewhere on
the restore screen that would allow you to restore the
backup to a brand
new, unpartitioned HD.
It would be great to be able to add speech to the Image for
Linux boot CD,
which would allow us to take full advantage of the restore
capabilities,
with no sighted assistance. Until then, we must rely on a
good set of
eyes.

David,

Thanks, I'll spare you the long version (ha, ha). A simple
way to sum all this up would be say I have a good image on a
DVD and my current hard drive bites the dust. I go to the
store and buy a new one. I partition it an put it in the
machine and attempt to lay down the image on it and get what
I described to you at the end of the message. Suggestions?

Well the subject says it all. I will try to be as brief
below as possible to explain my dilemma and hopefully find a
simple answer that I am obviously overlooking.
About a month ago I purchased Image For Windows and am
thrilled with the program. I have successfully created and
restored two different images with no problem. Here is my
current dilemma.
I have two Acer computers. I'll call them Intel and A M D so
as to not confuse them in the below dialogue I'm describing.
My primary in home networked computer was the Intel. The A M
D computer as well as my wife's worked off this Intel unit.
The computer had not been re formatted for about a year and
a half and I also wanted to swap it out for the A M D
machine which has a faster processor and twice the memory. I
know the hours it can take to set a computer up from
scratch so I figured I would simply take the hard drive out
of the A M D computer and use it to set up the Intel
computer as time permitted. The first thing I did was to use
the Image for Windows program to create an image of the A M
D computer. I then
