Hi John,
You should go to the manufacturer's website, look for the model, and download
the latest driver.
They will often have drivers for windows 7.
It is mostly possible to use your old printer on the new computer unless it is
really really old!
What is the model of the printer. I can look for drivers and email you the link.

Hello all. I recently had the Geek-Squad come out to help resolve what I
thought was a computer crash; I couldn't get it to boot up.
With some software he had, the technician was able to boot it up and said that
I had probably shut the computer down while it was in the process of updating.
However, I am now unable to install Microsoft Security Essentials. Instead,
there is something on the computer called Best Virus Protection. I don't know
what this is or where it came from. I should add that the company Best Buy owns
The Geek-Squad.
The other thing is that when I went to the control pannel to delete this
program, I was unable to find it.
If anyone can share any light on this, I'd sure be interested.
Thanks.

Hi Mark,
You've got to just use your web browser and goto amazon's kindle store then
purchase the book outside the kindle app.
Then because your kindle app is associated with your amazon account you can
tell the store via the web to send it to your kindle app. I can't remember if
you can do a sync from within the kindle app or not.

Rick,
Have you had any experience with reading? I vaguely remember a podcast a
while back that suggested that it was pretty hard to navigate. I'm not sure
there's any real advantage for us with the Kindle app as for the sighted
user, and with initiatives like BARD it seems unlikely that Amazon will have
any real incentive to make the Kindle itself accessible.

[Blind-Computing] braille embossers

Unfortunately the tractor lit on the left side has broken and won't stay
closed. I have found a repair person for the unit. Here's hoping that parts can
be gotten / made. Anyone out there know what is the current standard for a low
volume production Braille embosser just in case I need one or have to look for
a backup.
Thoughts would be appreciated. Haven't been in the market for about 20 years.

Thanks

does not do any print spooling or buffering.

Hi
First, I must admit that I have never attempted doing this type of
connection. However, it seems to me that it might be an issue of buffering.
The first 11 pages you mentioned are all that the buffer in the versa point
could hold. Then everything after that gets dumped. If this is the case, you
would need to find a buffering device to put between the versa point and the
print server. On the other hand, your print server may have built in
buffering that you could change the settings on to give you more buffering.
 Just my thoughts.

Good morning listers,
Has anyone out there ever connected a versapoint braille embosser to a print
server using a parallel port? If so I would be interested in talking with
you.
I have tried to do so and I only get the first 11 pages of a braille
document and the printer stops.
thanks for any advice.

The reader does not seem to work very well with JAWS.
Is there a way to convert this to a text document I can read in Word or

I can understand that publishers don't want to make their books too easy to

accessibility issue.

wouldn't happen, so I reverted back to 9.
Note, as I indicated, this is my experience, not a definite solution, maybe

Good Morning All,

I have Adobe Reader 9.4.3 on my XP Home with SP3 machine and would like to
upgrade to version 10 or whatever the latest version is that works with
JAWS. JFW 9 and 10 are on the machine and I have a SMA for 11 if necessary.

Is the best way of doing it to use check for updates in the Adobe Reader
help menu or to uninstall the existing program and to go to the Adobe
accessibility site and get version 10 from there? IE 8 and Firefox 3.6.16
are both on the machine.

Any downloading and installation tips in addition to trying to keep a close
eye out for the pesky Google stuff would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Margaret

I have a versapoint single sided embosser which works via a parallel port. When
connected to a computer, all works fine.
I have tried to connect this printer via a print server and the port is

network.
the lpt port maps and the brfout command in duxbury simply completes with no
output. Has anyone had experience with this issue?

Rick,

Thanks. I guess we can do this on list as it does pertain to
computers and others may find the answers to my questions
helpful.

What is prompting my inquiry is my current scanner (an all
in one feed through HP) and OCR software (OmniPage pro 15)
leaves many limitations. Many times what I want to scan I
can't because I can't feed it through the scanner. From what
I've read it sounds like the Pearl can be used as a scanner
and/or OCR all in one. Unfortunately I also understand one
needs Open Book 9 or higher to go with it. Not being an Open
Book user that is an expensive piece of software. Anyway
here are some question:

1. Can the unit be a substitute for a stand alone scanner?

No
Once you snap a picture of a memo, letter, etc is there an
option to save the picture as an image or only as a document
following the OCR process? Many times I like to scan things
and keep an electronic copy of it but not necessarily OCR
it. I think so but have never used this functionality.

How good is the OCR when it performs the function?
I have omnipage 12 and openbook is much better.

Lets start here, thanks again

Openbook does save as an image I think. Pearl does require a computer to
operate. This is what I meant when I said that it won't sub for a standalone
scanner such as things like the sara.
But it will replace a regular scanner.
Much faster!!

I got it and because of finances and am using the demo version for now.
I also like the save to audio feature. I have saved to an mp3 and put it on my

The book was about 102 pages and was about 27 mb as an mp3.
Just my thoughts.

I was over at the NFB yesterday and none other than Eric Damary gave me a
demo of the Pearl and it was nice indeed for $600 with OB 9. the Pearl is
totally portable folds down into a nice case. The reading quality was very
clear and concise.
The Pearl looks sort of like what the old goose lamps look like if you
happen to remember what those looked like, but not as fat.
I didn't see or use the other model..

Ok, I wish to bring this back on topic. I am considering using System
Access to Go quite frequently now I have an active and reliable
internet connection. I do have an account on there, but have forgotten
the pin. So I went onto the log in page at www.serotek.com, and
followed the instructions to retrieve my details. The problem is, I
have not received anything from Serotek support with my details. I
have tried this twice, on two separate occasions, and I just haven't
heard from them. One possibility is that the e-mail address they have
I may have deleted, so it's probably bouncing back to them. Should I
therefore create a new System Access to Go account?
Many thanks, and it may go as far as getting System Access Standalone
 through Build a Bundle.

Re: [Blind-Computing] system access

2010-06-29 Thread Rick Watson
Hi Hamid,

Unfortunately when I connect to the other computer and press the scroll lock, I
still cannot read their screen.
Jaws doesn't see it even though it is there. As confirmed by a sighted
colleague.
Is this solution supposed to allow jaws on my side to read their screen?
And also do they need jaws on their computer?
Thanks

Once you get connected to the distant computer, you have to press the
scroll Lock so that the keyStrokes you press on your keyboard will be
carried out to the other computer. Then, most of your keystrokes will be
functioning on the other machine not yours untill you press the scroll
lock again.

I mean by jaws specific keystrokes, the hotkeys that imply the jaws key
whether it's insert or something else, thus, you need to ask your client
who is sitting behind the distant computer sometimes to perform a
keystroke for you on his/her keyboard. For example, if you get lost, you
should ask him/her to press insert + t on the distant keyboard to hear
the window title. Other than that, nealy all windows keystrokes will
function properly on the distant machine. You can open the control
pannel and make whatever modifications you want. you can
install/Uninstall software, you can even write in the distant machine's
word processor and even apply all the editing commands such as copy and
paste... but you will not be able to hear jaws echoing your typing on
the distant machine's word processor.

It a bit challenging to learn how to manipulate it at the beginning, but
once you get used to it, you'll find it so easy to use. I've started
using it around one month ago and have solved many problems with it on
distant computers.

Hope my english didn't make you more confused

You have the rim client on your machine. You email a link to the host software
to your person with whom you want to connect.
Then you use system access screen reader and start the rim client.
The other person presses alt+shift+backspace.
Both parties enter an agreed upon password.

You and the other person see their desktop and sa voices the desktop to you.
It doesn't start a new desktop you see things just like you were at the user's
computer.

You can do things and see what the other person is doing.

is (seeing as I haven't gotten that far yet) what was your experience like?
Was it something simple to do or will I need visual assistance?

Re: [Blind-Computing] standard view in gmail

2010-04-09 Thread Rick Watson
It deals with the account/import tab.
This allows one to access gmail and add another pop3 email account and pick up
mail from that account into gmail.
I found that you can click on those things that are supposed to be buttons even
though they read like a standard word.
Thanks

I'm not quite sure what settings are there that I can't access with the HTML
view. I've been in and out of the settings several times and have always
found what I need. Quite honestly though, I find it easier to use gmail
with pop3 access with outlook or outlook express.

Just my two cents worth.

Hi David,
I truly understand about your worrying about people losing their data.
I recall several years before I ran in to these E-Mail lists, that I tried a
file shredder utility. Well, I mist one setting and promptly shredded my
desktop. That was not much fun.
Right now what I am needing to do is wipe an old hard drive before it
goes out in the trash. Any recommendations for a program? If you would like
you could E-Mail me off list.

Hi,

I also use Bank of America for my checking account. I use a
format with MS Word to layout my checks and print it on my HP laser printer.

The best thing is that the bank provided me with a business size
checks that was specifically designed for the blind. It has
raised lines which for me I can tell which way to put the check
into the printer.

So, if you have an account with Bank of America, try to find out
if you can order these checks. Perhaps, other banks offer the
same checks? It all depends what check printer they use.

The only downside with these check is that the check printer
don't always print the checks exactly the same way each time and
I am having to have my wife measure the checks so that I can make
the changes in MS Word.

Thought that you might like to know this.

Dear Tom,
That is just about what I do!

Except I use a Word doc file!

The only thing is I have to use that removable Scotch Tape, it
is number 811, which sticks about like a post it note, it
sticks but is easily removed, to attach my check to the top
left hand corner of a letter size sheet of paper to run it through my
printer!

The checks are just too too small to run through my HP 950c printer!

I usually print all my monthly checks at one setting, so I just
use one sheet of paper!

But I have been doing it like that for many years!

This is true. But young people have become quite spoiled. When I was young
many people didn't even have private home phone service, and many others
only had one telephone in the home. I was taught to allow the phone to ring
at least ten times before hanging up because that would be a minute. It
would give the person answering the phone a chance to get to the phone.
There were no answering machines as we know them today. Doctors and such
had answering services. Now, if the person doesn't answer after 4 or 5
rings the call is automatically forwarded to voice mail. Whether or not the
person being called is at home at all or not. If you are going to pay 66
dollars a month for cellular service with tax. Because in this day of
marauders wondering the streets we blind people need cellular service. and
say 20 dollars for internet service anyway. Why pay more? Can you beat the
cost of 20 dollars annuli for a service which gives so much for it's cost?

Hi Gerald,
Exactly, and both of these services do do display a statement about this on
their websites.
VOIP services are an alternative to what used to be, expensive long-distance
plans,
but certainly not a total replacement for land-line service.
Even the digital phone service offered by most cable companies, is nothing
more than VOIP.
When the power is out, it is out, and I would hate to think that my only
means of communications
is through the cable, the computer, or a celphone whose battery will not
last forever.
Standard phone service in this country has been around longer than most of
us have been alive,
and even though we don't always agree with the pricing, it's reliability,
has been time-tested.
I do use Skype, in addition to my phone service, and it does have very good
sound quality, now if I could only remember which computer it is on. smile.

Thanks for that warning, Rick. A lot of blind folks think Skyte and Magic
Jack are the greatest things since sliced bread until they experience a
power outage and are left without any means of calling 911 in the event of
an emergency. Any blind person living alone should think twice about
ditching their land line phone in favor of one of these less reliable VOIP

I have already spoken to tech support at amazon and they thought talking menus
would be possible and the tech rep told me that he would be sure and put it in
for suggestions of future improvement.

Yes, Jacob, it is irritating. Don't these companies have a clue about
potential audiences of paying customers? I'm going to let AMazon know.

Re: [Blind-Computing] announcement of reader from intel

2009-11-10 Thread Rick Watson
Good afternoon list,
Just curious... has anyone compared this reader solution to the eye-pal system?
I am looking for something that is portable and can scan rapidly and accurately.
There is a good possibility that I will be taking some masters level courses
which will require a lot of reading. Obviously I will locate as many books in
alternative formats as possible but need an alternative solution.

Thanks
Rick

If you are happy with an actual program rather than a web site check out text
aloud.
Check out www.nextup.com.

I have noticed several books out there in a format called epub. Are there any
software programs which can read this format to make these books accessible?
Thanks

[Blind-Computing] accessibility of various electronic book formats

2009-11-04 Thread Rick Watson
Good morning listers,
Along with my earlier question about epub I would also like to throw this topic
out for discussion...
I have been asked by an admissions director how I access various texts. As I am
considering taking some various masters level courses I would like to present a
complete picture.
Obviously I can receive books from rfbd as well as pdf(provided that text
exists in the file) and text files. html files. and word docs.
I can of course scan the books with ocr packages.
I have already used these formats.

what other technologies have others used and found to be successful?

thanks

Re: [Blind-Computing] RE Accessibility of various electronic books

2009-11-04 Thread Rick Watson
Hi Tom,
what other programs are available for scanning those empty pdfs. I don't have
openbook.
I am considering purchase of eye-pal scanning system. The reason for this is
because of its fast scanning (about 20 seconds per page)

btw Tom, I love your books and your ministry.
I am considering the m.div degree.
thanks

Rick,
You could add rtf to your list.
At Optasia Ministry we put all our books in rtf format so that they can
be read on a variety of computers and with a variety of programs. RTF
preserves more formatting than txt.

Note that the so called, empty, pdf documents can sometimes be scanned
For example, I use Open Book, whihch has that option built into it.
Blessings,
Tom
