Re: [BlindHandyMan] Veritas Sharpening System

2007-04-17 Thread woodworkingfortheblind
You're welcome!

In my earlier e-mail I did not include anything on the Veritas Mark II Honing
Guide which I do not have and have not used. It seems to be a souped-up version
of the original Veritas sharpening system. The catalog lists the Mark II Honing
Guide as Item Number 05M09.01 and the description reads: The key to consistent
and fast honing is repeatability and this guide delivers it in spades. It will
set angles from 15 degrees to 54 degrees and a range of back bevels from 10
degrees to 20 degrees. It can easily accomodate chisels as narrow as 1/4 inch
and blades as wide as 2 7/8 inches and up to 1/2 inch thick. The
blade-registration jig slides onto the guide body, centering and squaring the
blade with an integral fence. The blade stop has discrete positions for preset
bevel angles. Features a three position eccentric roller, allowing you to hone
micro-bevels quickly and accurately with only a turn of a knob. Manufactured
from die-cast zinc alloy with precision machined brass and steel par
ts. For the user, this means quick, accurate sharpening and perfectly
repeatable results, reducing unnecessary stone and blade wear. End of
description.

The photo shows the blade regstration guide to be an aluminum plate about 2
inches wide and 6 inches long. A series of lines are marked across the face of
the plate indicating registration for various angles. There is a C-clamp type
stop along one edge which is the registration blade stop. It tightens with a
knurled knob and there are detents along the long edge for exact positioning of
the stop. This feature would be very useful to blind woodworkers although you
would have to know which angle corresponds to which detent. The registration
jig attaches to the guide body with a knurled knob.

There are two different scales for registration. A red scale is for high angles
of 25, 30, 35 40, 45, 50 and 54 degrees. A yellow scale is for standard angles
of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 degrees. The red and yellow registration marks are
different. For instance, the red high angle line of 40 degrees coincides with
the yellow standard angle of 30 degrees. I do not know why there is this
difference and do not know their definition of high angles. This registration
guide seems to be much simpler to operate than the angle jig in the original
system.

The Mark II honing guide is an advanced version of the original honing guide
described in the earlier Veritas Sharpening System e-mail.

The micro-bevel sharpening echnique is amazing. There is a knob on the side of
the honing guide which can be pulled out slightly to turn it to a new position.
Honing is done with the knob mark in the up or 12 o'clock position. Say you are
honing at 25 degrees. When finished, turn the knob to the middle or 3 o'clock
position and you can quickly hone a 1 degree microbevel at 26 degrees. Next,
turn the knob to the down or 6 o'clock position and quickly hone an additional
1 degree microbevel at 27 degrees. It takes only a few strokes on the stone to
hone each microbevel. I think it's a fabulous technique. The honing of the
microbevels goes so quickly because you are honing such a very small angle and
removing just a tiny amount of steel.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Drill Doctor

2007-04-17 Thread Bill Gallik
I have a Drill Doctor that cost about $70.00 at the local Menard's. It is
extremely "blind friendly" in that it has a chuck-like piece that you use to
hold the drill bit onto the grinding wheel; this piece has "waves" in the
guiding shoulder to guide the bit appropriately and it also holds the drill
bit at a constant depth so there's no chance of grinding excessive stock on
the bit being sharpened.

As for how well it sharpens; it doesn't sharpen a bit "like new," but it is
very much better than a fully dulled bit. There's a more expensive Drill
Doctor that does an excellent sharpening job but I can't speak as to whether
or not it is usable by a blind person.

Yeah, the subject line says it all.
I'm a bassist and recently I've gotten such wild hairs, I have done
all kinds of upgrading and swapping bass guitars. Now I have this
incredibly crazy idea. I want to take a five-string Fender Jazz bass,
remove the frets, fill -in the empty spaces and have me a fretless.
So, if anyone has done this, I'd be curious how best to remove the
frets, but more importantly, what would be a good filler. This is a
Rosewood fingerboard.

The Veritas sharpening system, Item No. 05M02.10, consists of an
angle-setting jig for bvevels and a precision honing guide. To set-up the
system you insert of chisel into the honing guide and clamp it very lightly so
you can still adjust the chisel within the guide. Then you take the chisel and
insert the tip carefully into the angle-setting jig. The jig consists of a
6-inch long base with a pentagon wheel attached to one end. The whell has
bevelled undersurfaces set to 15 degrees, 20, 25, 30 and 35 degrees. Choose the
angle you want, say 25 degrees for a chisel. Then slide the chisel, bevel down,
tight against the angle-setting jig until the the face of the tool is flush
with the pentagon wheel face. When it is tight, then clamp the tool firmly in
the honing guide. Now you're ready to hold the end of the blade on the
sandpaper or stone and begin rolling the guide forward and back until a
satisfactory bevel is formed. This honing guide can also be set to add two
microbevels after
you've finished with the main bevel.

I use this system. The honing guide is terrific because the rolling wheel is
1 1/4 inches long which makes it easy to keep it flat on the stone or
sandpaper. Also, the microbevels can be honed quickly and they make the chisels
extremely sharp. The angle-setting jig is another matter. I am sighted and I
have a great deal of difficulty using the jig and seeing if the chisel is flush
against the bevelled face of the pentagon wheel. I can't think of a practical
way for a blind woodworker to use the angle-setting jig other than by feel.

To do it, have the angle-setting jig lying on a work surface with the
pentagon wheel to the right and the flat surface of the base to the left. Put
your right hand over the pentagon wheel and use your thumb and index finger to
hold the blade firmly in the jig with the point in tight and the blade flush up
against the bevelled surface on the underside of the wheel. Use your left hand
thumb and index finger to slide the honing guide forward until the play has
been taken out and the guide is tight against the blade. Do not exert too much
pressure on the blade or it will tilt out of flush with the bevelled face of
the jig. Then tighten the locking screw on top.

After just doing this, I measured the distance on top of the plane iron blade
from its sharp edge back to the gripping disk of the clamp. That distance was 1
7/32 inches or 31.5 millimeters for the 30-degree setting. At 25-degrees it was
1 11/16 inches or 42 millimeters.

An alternative honing guide is the Ecclipse-type guide which consists of a
small clamp on a threaded rod with a small 1/2-inch rolling wheel also mounted
on the threaded rod. Tighten the threaded rod to loosely clamp the chisel or
plane iron blade into the jig. Then measure the distance from the tip of the
blade to the jig. This distance sets the angle of the bevel. The instructions
say to use 30 millimeters or 1 3/16-inches for 30 degrees for a chisel and 40
millimeters or 1 5/8 inches for 25 degrees for a chisel. For a plane iron, use
38 millimeters or 1 1/2 inches for 30 degrees for a plane iron or 50
millimeters or 2 inches for 25 degrees for a plane iron. I do not understand
why there is a difference for chisels and plane irons.

These Ecclipse-type measurements are different from the measurements I got on
the Veritas angle-setting jig and I do not understand why.

From all that I have read there does not seem to be any particular magic in
getting the bevel exactly at 25 degrees or 30 degrees. Close seems to be good
enough. A chisel ground at 25 1/2 degrees or 26 degrees should perform nearly
identically with a chisel ground at exactly 25 degrees. What is magical,
however, is keeping the angle consistent once it is ground.

Of course, there is a major difference between grinding and honing. Grinding
is done on a grinding wheel with the purpose of setting the angle of the bevel,
of grinding the bevel to a point and making the edge square to the sides.
Honing is the next process carried out with fine sandpapers or oil stones or
water stones. The rougher grits smooth out the scratches from the grinding so
that the face of the bevel meets the back of the chisel or plane iron in an
extremely thin point. The finer grits polish the bevel to remove scratches from
the coarser abrasive and to bring the edge to an extremely fine edge point
which makes the chisel or plane iron super sharp.

[BlindHandyMan] Emailing: sweatingCopperPipe.htm

2007-04-17 Thread Rob Monitor

  Sweating Copper Pipe.
Step 1: The most important thing about sweating copper or anything else is
clean and hot. Fine sand paper or good sharp steel wool is used to carefully
clean the end of the pipe going into the fitting and even with new fittings I
work paper around my baby finger and polish the inside of the fitting and wipe
any dust or grit out of the fitting and off of the pipe with a rag or the tail
of my shirt.
Step 2: Apply flux. This comes in different forms but usually is a paste like
grease with what I believe is a mild acid. This helps to clean and reduce
oxidation as heat is applied and it facilitates the capillary action which
draws the solder up into the joint actually filling in the small spaces between
the pipe and the fitting. The professionals buy the stuff in large tins with a
brush and they apply it very liberally. I cover the end of the pipe, a few
inches along the pipe and I wipe some into the fitting as well.

Step 3: I wind off some solder from the end of the roll and make sure I know
just where it is. I push the fitting and pipe together, if it is an elbow or a
T sometimes I will prepare all pieces and push them together to be soldered at
the same time. I may take the solder wire and glide it along the pipe until I
feel it come up against the edge of the fitting, feeling it make contact sort
of as a practice. I may bend the end down a little so I can feel the seam
better.

Step 4: Strike a flame on the torch, I may have to feel the seam of the pipe
and fitting with the tip of the torch occasionally just to be sure I am where I
want to be, use lots of heat and, from time-to-time move around the junction.
When you draw the flame back and wash over the copper, there is a sound it
makes when the hot part of the flame is directly on the pipe. You come to know
that sound. Once it is really hot, take the flame away, preferably turn it off
and touch the solder to the seam. I try to hit the top and move fairly quickly
to one side and the other side of the pipe. If the pipe is hot enough then the
heat of the pipe will melt the solder which will run around the seam and get
sucked into it by the flux.

It is easy to burn yourself on the pipe. I don't know off hand just how hot
solder melts, it is well above the 450 degrees or so which combusts wood and
paper.

It is necessary to work totally dry. Any moisture in the pipe will keep the
temperature too low for a good joint. There can be nothing more frustrating
than applying the solder just to have a drop of water fall from some point
above in the water line and hiss the heat away.

I try to assemble as much of the installation as I can on a bench to do my
best to keep away from under floors or against joists or studs in a wall but
sooner or later there you are in the most inconvenient place. I have a few bits
of sheet metal about which I use for shields. I often wet down any wood if I am
working near it. There are also now heat insulation pads available, I don't
have any, I forget to buy any and don't think of it until I am in the middle of
something on a Saturday night! I also usually keep an old towel well dampened
about and I try not to work in tight places late at night so I have time to
check for smell of smoke and heat several times before going to bed. If there
are functional eyes about I will ask them to check for fire as well.

There are some fittings like valves which are steel. They require very
careful cleaning as they tend to have a little corrosion. Remove as much other
stuff as possible like the valve stem partly so you do not have to heat all
that extra iron and partly because any O rings and rubber or plastic washers
will be destroyed by the heat.

You should be aware that there is still a lot of lead solder about, ask
specifically for lead free. There is also flux core solder which is not, in my
experience, satisfactory for plumbing though some may use it, I don't know what
it is intended for. The thin stuff is for wiring, maybe the thick stuff is for
heavy wiring.

I have been putting in 3/4 inch pipe for as much of the common runs here as I
can get to. This is a little harder because it takes a little more heat and you
need to work around the joint a bit more so it is all hot enough to draw the
solder in. It is a lot quieter though and preserves pressure much better
particularly on the second floor and it is not all that much more expensive to
use. I have been thinking of assembling a network for my compressor, this
requires a heavier gauge of copper, don't know how it solders. It is cheaper
though and much lighter to handle than steel pipe and I don't have any taps or
dies.

Another trick I sometimes use is to run the flame into the end of the pipe if
the joint is fairly near. This gets it hot in a hurry.

The worst thing is that I do occasional

2007-04-17 Thread Dale Leavens
Hi Scott,

I think there is an article up on the site I wrote on how I sweat copper
pipe. It takes some patience and isn't without some risk of burns but if you
have reasonable ears to hear the flame and a light touch with the solder it
can be done.

If there isn't such an article I can probably write another one but it takes
some time and I doubt I will be able to do so in the next couple of weeks.

I do remember writing a rather lengthy description for this list many years
ago and a couple of others for a lady who was the teaching assistant for a
young lad in an school a couple of years ago, perhaps someone can let us
know if there is such an article up there.

If they were good boys and didn't use epoxy to glue the frets in, you might
get a very sharp chisel the width of the frett and tap it in under
an end, thus pryzing it out. It'd be nice to know what the fretts are
made of, it is probbly something that'd contrast with the rosewood.

Then you'd gotta clean out all the old glue before you replace the fretts
with strips of rosewood that just fit. They'd probably
have to be hand made and fitted exactly with a file before gluing them in.

You don't wanna use epoxy or anything because you'd wreck that wonderfull
rosewood texture.

Or at least that's how an out of date fiddle maker's apprentice would
approach the problem.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] replacing water supply valves

2007-04-17 Thread Dale Leavens
Do you know anything about working with drywall and plaster?

Basically the best way to shrink that hole is to remove any framework around
the edge of the hole, I think I would then create the framework I want for
the new access hole first to be sure it is of the correct size then just add
in wall framing to support that frame. For your purposes probably two
lengths of 2 by 4, one up each side of the new panel frame joined by lengths
across top and bottom of the panel frame. If there is more than 16 inches
space between this structure and the existing wall
framing you might want another vertical. You might then scab a length of
strapping to bring out the edge of the existing framing member to give you
something to attach the drywall patch to at the edges and depending on what
is at the bottom edge of the existing drywall, slide a length of strapping
half way behind it and fix with screws through the drywall. Now you have
something to fix a patch to all around the outer edge.

Cut and fit a patch of drywall to fill the hole, you might want to cut out
the new panel opening but you could do that with a drywall saw after the
patch is installed or even with one of those new spin saw router sort of
tools.

Screw the patch into place and get busy with tape and mud and mud and mud
and sanding and dust and paint and trim out the hole and you are done.

[BlindHandyMan] to fret or to fretless

2007-04-17 Thread Scott Howell
Yeah, the subject line says it all.
I'm a bassist and recently I've gotten such wild hairs, I have done
all kinds of upgrading and swapping bass guitars. Now I have this
incredibly crazy idea. I want to take a five-string Fender Jazz bass,
remove the frets, fill -in the empty spaces and have me a fretless.
So, if anyone has done this, I'd be curious how best to remove the
frets, but more importantly, what would be a good filler. This is a
Rosewood fingerboard.

tnx

wouldn't do much since he really couldn't cut pipe straps etc. So,
after he told me off the record I could do this and adjust things and

So, the end result is to reduce the hole so you can easily reach the

Magazine CD 4 has Sharpen With Sandpaper from Fine Woodworking 184, p. 63.

Magazine CD 12 has Keeping Tools Sharp from Fine Woodworking 189, p. 80.

Magazine CD 7 has Bowl Gouge Sharpening from American Woodworker 123, p. 78.

Magazine CD 9 has Slow Speed Grinders from American Woodworker 124, p. 62.

Magazine CD 10 has Tune-up an Old Chisel from American Woodworker 125, p. 79.

Magazine CD 14 has Reshaping the Skew Chisel from American Woodworker 127, p.

2007, p. 67 and Pinnacle Honing Guide from Woodcraft 14 dated March, 2007, p.
66.

Magazine CD 7 has Sharpening Drill Bits from Woodsmith 160, p. 12.

I cite the magazine name, issue number and page number to help in finding the
article on the CD.

The book Complete Manual of Woodworking issued on Book CDs 3 and 4 also has
sections on sharpening which are fairly general in approach.

Any member joining after the time a CD was issued can request back copies so

Thank you sir for that information. I'll have to start digging into

Re: [BlindHandyMan] replacing water supply valves

2007-04-17 Thread Scott Howell
Ah, yes manifold, I couldn't think of the proper name. Well I guess
the question I have for you is how you sweated the valve. Not having
sight, I wouldn't say I wouldn't try, but I'd sure want to know how
it could be done so I wouldn't wind up with a leak on my hands. grin

[BlindHandyMan] Radio Desk.

2007-04-17 Thread Max Robinson
I applied the first coat of polyurethane to the radio desk today. I'm going
to do 3 coats. I tried it on a small piece of wood that makes the vent
trapdoor and Sue's comments were highly favorable. Wish me luck on the big
job.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread Armando Del Gobbo
The angle depends on the length of the blade protruding from the unit, and I
believe that there is a scale included with the instructions. For example a
one inch length, gives you a 25 degree! I haven't use it for a while, so I
don't remember the scale!

  Thank you for this Ralph.

Do you think you would be able to set the angle on a new chisel by resting
it in the guide and feeling when the bevel is flat on your stone then
  setting the guide?

Not having had one in my hands yet I have no idea if this is practical.

The bevel on a plane blade is probably too thin but maybe a chisel.

thanks for the report, and for being the guinea pig.

And Dale, my Shakespeare is a bit rusty, so maybe we could sharpen that and

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Pipe Clamps

2007-04-17 Thread Dale Leavens
Hi Larry,

It might well work, just how rigid though would a four foot length of that
tubing be? one doesn't want it deflecting when pressure is applied.

The only other consideration is that it needs male threads on one end to
screw the tightening head end and the other end slides up and down locking
into place by virtue of a spring loaded toothed dog which bites into the
pipe preventing it from sliding as pressure is applied at the head end. This
is why black iron is usually used. Rae painted his, most do not and this too
can be an issue since the iron can stain wood in the presence of moisture,
either atmospheric or from glue.

At about 20 bucks per four foot length though your tubing remains pretty
expensive as well but it might be a bit lighter and less likely to rust.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread Ralph Supernaw
Hi,

I have the Veritas Sharpening system and use it. I need sighted help to set
the honing guide for a specific angle. Were I organized I'd brialle the
angles for each setting and then could do it myself. I have sharpened at
least a couple chistles by guessing at the angle. But, with a new chissle I
would want to set it at a particular angle to save time sharpening. Once
the angle is set and the blade mounted in the honing guide the rest is just
"back and forth" until you can shave your arm.

I like the feature that allows you to set a micro bevel by rotating a knob
without removing the blade.

The results I have had using the guide are far superior to that I have
achieved freehand. This is also true for my brother who is sighted.

Ralph

So, the open part is about the middle of the dome?

That implies to me that your saw isn't exactly true in the vertical, a
little off perpendicular to the bed.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread Dale Leavens
I haven't used it and I don't own it and if you worry about sighting along
this or that then you will never get anything because that is the language
of the optically enabled. This too is one of the reasons I have not yet
acquired those jigs. It is my feeling though that for all the fuss these
things are really a lot more approximate than we would be lead to believe.
The real trick is to keep the bevel constant so you don't get a convex bevel
which would make the actual edge of attack way too great. Obviously, if a
plane blade isn't very close to square to it's edge it will be more
difficult to line up in the shoe but even a square blade needs alining in
the plane which also, theoretically requires sighting along the shoe and
there has never been a blind person do that ever in history.

When I worked in Dawson Creek I once had this old Sudatenland German patient
who came to canada just before the war, there were a number of them settled
in the area. I was complaining about having chipped a plane blade. He told
me to bring it in next time and he brought a hand crank grinding wheel which
he clamped to the edge of my desk and promptly ground the chip out of the
blade, touched up another one and a pair of chisels and then honed them
perfect with an oil stone about two and a half inches by maybe 4. He gave me
the stone and I use it still.

My point here is that I well remember my father having a wheel like that
many years ago and me trying to use it. You only have your left hand for
guiding the blade against the wheel which, doubtless is a little easier if
you can see but you are only estimating the angle even if you can see
because you can't observe it from overhead and your right hand is busy
cranking.

I am betting that a reasonably sensitive touch would aline the edge close
enough as doesn't matter. Setting the angles to precisely 35 or 40 or 25 on
the gauge might be more problematic but with the set-up blocks as reference
one would be within a couple of degrees dead reckoning.

The masters of course do it without a jig by touch and claim absolute
accuracy and maybe they are right. I am pretty sure most of us could do it
too only we don't have the instruction or the reliable means of
verification.

Besides, we are all waiting for you to buy, test and inform us first.

I am thinking I am going to buy me either a Tormek or a Jet. The Tormek rep
offered to take a day and teach me how to use the Tormek down in Kitchener
which might have been sales talk but I have thought it might be interesting
to get a couple of hotel rooms and get a few of us together for a sharpening
lesson and maybe over to Stratford for some Shakespeare some week-end this
summer or fall.

[BlindHandyMan] Pipe Clamps

2007-04-17 Thread Larry Stansifer
Guys,

Keep in mind I have no idea what the hell I am talking about
when it comes to that wood stuff however, something came to
mind when you were discussing pipe clamps.
I am not exactly certain how they are configured but let me
throw something out and see if it floats.

A very commonly used product in automotive fabrication is
thick walled tubing. it is seamless and ranges in diameter
from 1/2 to 2inch plus.
It is lite, extremely strong and strait. The last stick I
bought was 20feet long, 3/4inches in diameter and cost me
less than a $100.00.

I used it to build the rear suspension for the El camino as
well as having to make some small spacer brackets for the
rack and pinion steering.

My thought was that you guys could take this stuff, cut it
into manageable lengths, and thread the inside diameter so
that you could join pieces together as needed.

If I am full of Sierra hotel India tango let me know and I
will crawl back under Carol's Corvette where I belong.

Regards

Larry Stansifer

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread woodworkingfortheblind
Here is a list of articles dealing with sharpening that have been recorded on
CDs by Woodworking for the Blind over the past year.

Magazine CD 1 has an article on Sharpening Machines from Fine Woodworking 182,
p. 38.

40 as well as Jet's Slow Speed Wet Sharpener from Woodcraft 13 dated January,

Any member joining after the time a CD was issued can request back copies so
that you have a complete library. Any blind woodworker not yet a member can
join by contacting [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hope this helps.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread Dan Rossi
I was just poking around on Lee Valley and am wondering what the Veritas
Sharpening system looks like. It is two parts, a honing guide and an
angle jig. So, does this just sit above, or in front of, a sharpening
stone? Does it look like a blind person could use it? It talks about
sighting along a registration line to keep a narrow blade properly
aligned.

Has anyone used this system?

thanks.

With a little practice and the right files, one can bring on a good edge, but
it all depends on the tool you are sharpening. My double bladed ax I use a
medium file first and than the fine file. On others, like my woodmate, I just
use a wet stone. On my knifes I just use a steel.

Thanks Dale. My current furnace has the aquastat at about 160 degrees F.
If I get a new system, not sure of what the water temps will be like, but
I have tended to run them at lower temps rather than have the issue of
short cycling the furnace. although, you can certainly run them too low.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread woodworkingfortheblind
Usually this is done by hand, first tilting the gouge to get the proper bevel
angle and then smoothly rolling the gouge across the grinder at the same angle
to sharpen it from edge to edge. It takes a lot of practice.

There are newer tools like the Wolverine sharpening jig that enable you to set
the angle and easily roll it from side to side while maintaining the angle.

Go to www.leevalley.com or woodcraft.com and look up Wolverine.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread rj
With a little practice and the right files, one can bring on a good edge, but
it all depends on the tool you are sharpening. My double bladed ax I use a
medium file first and than the fine file. On others, like my woodmate, I just
use a wet stone. On my knifes I just use a steel.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] RESump pumps

2007-04-17 Thread Dan Rossi
When my basement flooded back in September, we ended up setting up a
siphon. I put a five gallon bucket up on a table, ran a hose from the
bucket out the window, and kept that five gallon bucket filled by baling
from the floor to the bucket. It was a lot of work but we were doing
about 2.5 gallons a minute.

Probably the very best way is with a pond of variously graded water stones
and a couple of hones, fine oil stones and maybe a diamond hone. As you gain
skill you may want one or mor of those bevel jigs to guide the blade while
grinding and later honing a very fine edge.

There is the Scary system (spelling uncertain) which uses sand paper stuck
to very flat surfaces like plate glass, this is pretty cheap and can grind a
  well formed edge.

Finally I am very impressed with what I have seen in the new generation of
slow speed wet grinders. Tormek was probably the first and remains the most
expensive but now Delta and Jet have similar units quite a bit cheaper and
arguably as good and maybe better. These have a 2 inch wide grinding wheel
which turns relatively slowly in a bath of water and which can be finished
to grind quite aggressively or finished for a much finer grind and on the
other side is a leather wheel which is used with honing compound for a
really rather wonderful finish. There is quite a bit of learning with these
too, a number of jigs and fixtures for holding various blades from chisels
to plane blades or jointer knives and even specially shaped turning chisels.

A collection of decent stones gets pretty expensive and so does the Tormek,
even the Jet is about three hundred dollars US for the basic unit and so far
I haven't found a Canadian supplier for it.

Lee Valley has quite a collection of water stones, probably not the cheapest
place to buy but the quality is high, you will have good suppliers up in
Newcastle, a specialty shop I am sure and probably not all that cheap. The
methods using sand paper are cheap and apparently quite efficient but both
are hand grinding and will take some patience if you have to remove any
amount of steel for removing any nicks.

The high speed grinders not only spray sparks which pose a fire hazard
particularly for the blind although of the fires I am aware of, none were
caused by a blind person, the heat can easily destroy the temper and soften
the tool steel. you need to quench frequently and that makes relocating the
tool on the rest a bit more challenging.

I can look for more information on the "scary" system, I know that Larry is
familiar with it and of course we have Rae who is becoming expert in the
research department, maybe there already is something up there on the Site
on it I haven't been there for a while.

  Hope this helps.

ChiliBob,

You said that you ran a line from the hot water tank back to the manifold.
So does that mean the manifold has a hot side and a cold side? It would
seem somewhat silly to be dumping your hot water back through the incoming
cold water.

Just curious as this is all very interesting to me as I am thinking about

OK guys...

Does my El Camino hotrod qualify? or is this one of those
rusted out, redneck, rifle rack, kind of things.

BTW Robert,
That old Panel truck you mentioned could possibly have the
350CID LT1 four bolt main motor. That is the same base block
I used for the El Camino and the damn things are about
bullet proof.
Let me dig through my engine code resources and see if there

Dale,

I am not coping the trim boards, I am not that patient or good. These
trim boards would not be right for coping anyway, I don't think. These
weren't quarter round. These are the trim pieces called T boards, that
bridge the transition from tile to wood. So they look a bit like a
mushroom in cross section with a slightly domed finished top part about
2 inches wide, and a stem that runs down the bottom middle that is about a
half inch wide and a half inch deep.

I can look for more information on the "scary" system, I know that Larry is
familiar with it and of course we have Rae who is becoming expert in the
research department, maybe there already is something up there on the Site
on it I haven't been there for a while.

Hope this helps.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] replacing water supply valves

2007-04-17 Thread Dale Leavens
Good point Larry,

Scott, where is this wall with the hole? I assumed it would be inside
because we couldn't expose a water meter or other water valves to the
outdoor climate like that without them freezing and being destroyed.

Is this an exterior wall? Presumably those who read the meter need to have
visual access to it or are your meters now electronically read? If visible
access is required would a window be appropriate access?

What sort of wall has that huge hole in it?

Let me dig through my engine code resources and see if there
is a way to tell without pulling the oil-pan.

I've had that happen to me. I cut the board off three times and it was
still too short.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Pipe Bluing Clamps

2007-04-17 Thread Armando Del Gobbo
Hi,
by threading the pipe at both ends, and having a variety of lengths, by using a
coupling to join them, you can achieve almost any length you need.

You are fortunate to have the pipe for free. When you add the cost of new
black iron pipe they become actually quite expensive. They are heavy too,
mind you mine are three quarters inch pipe which must be nearly an inch
  outside diameter.

One other advantage is that you can always have extra lengths of pipe and
convert your supply of clamp heads to a variety of clamp lengths.

When clamping boards edge-to-edge take care to alternate the pipe clamps on
opposite faces as they tend to cause the boards to bow away from the pipe
side unless balanced from the other side. The force isn't exactly at right
angles to the long direction of the pipes.
