RE: [BlindHandyMan] My watch.
Donnie, I got my watch at Independent Living Aids. It was about $25 on line. I've had it for about 4 years and I love it. It has four alarms, it tells you the time and date and also has a stop watch. It's nothing fancy but very dependable like a Timex watch used to be. For the price, you can just buy a new one every five years or so and you're good for another five years. It's nice looking according to beth andrugged, as I wear it all the time while I work, doing wood work. They have other watches, as well, but I like this one. Hope this helps. RE: [BlindHandyMan] security light with motion detector
Two things. A friend bought a security system from Home Depot but that was about four years ago and I don't know if they carry them any more. It had a motion sensing camera and a VCR recorder. When someone went in front of the camera it automatically turned on the recorder and ran for about a minute, but if there was continuing movement, it would keep running. Secondly, no matter what type of motion sensor you use, there is always the problem outside of having the wind blowing tree branches or shrubs, etc. and setting it off. If this happens often, you start to ignore it. Once you start ignoring it because you think it is a tree branch, you might as well not even have one. RE: [BlindHandyMan] purchasing a new washing machine!
Jim, My Sears washing machine, which was about 12 years old, started sounding like someone was beating it with a hammer. I called the service department and was told that it was probably the transmission and it would be cheaper to buy a new one. We went to Sears and got a good deal on a floor model. Both machines were top loaders,. We got the new one home and it sounded exactly like the one we just replaced. I called the store and they sent a serviceman the next week. The problem was, you guessed it, the transmission. Oh well, sometimes you just can't win. Anyway, I was talking to the service man and he told me that sometime, in the near future, all washing machines will be front loaders. He said they clean the clothes much more efficiently and the problem with the door leaking is a thing of the past. As far as the controls are concerned, my microwave is a flat panel, but I use those self adhesive nubs to find my way around the panel. They are like little buttons that you put on keyboards and such. They come in all different sizes. Anywaythat may be a consideration for you if the control panel is an issue. Maybe someone else on here has a flat panel washing maching and will comment on it. I've been told, and have actually confirmed this, that Sears, and the manufacturer have developed Braille overlays for the flat panel and knob models, so a blind person will have the Braille to use with the various controls. The overlays are free of charge, and available upon request when you can Sears customer service and/or the manufacturer. RE: [BlindHandyMan] More on studs.
I have a carpentry book at home and it shows how to build a soundproof wall. It shows two separate two by four walls, with separate top and bottom plates. The walls have a space of one inch between them, so the top and bottom plates are separate and not touching each other. The studs are on 16 inch centers on each wall, but their placement is alternated from one wall to the other. There are Styro foam sheets placed on the studs before screwing on the dry wall. They insulated both walls internally with fiberglass panels that are friction fit between all studs, with a few nails to keep them in place. These insulation panels are not paper backed and are pressed in place, so as to maintain the air gap between the two walls. I was talking to a friend at the local hardware store and mentioned that some sales people do not want to sell power tools to the blind. He told me that it is not necessarily because you are blind. A few years ago a salesman in a department store sold something to an individual who was mentally incompetent. The individual got hurt and the family filed a suit against the store and salesman. It was settled out of court. Because of that some sales people are reluctant to sell to anyone that they believe could have a problem operating the machinery. As I said I do not agree with that but it now makes a little more sense understanding their attitude. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Garbage disposal
I don't have a garbage disposal. When I moved into this house, 12 years ago, there wasn't a disposal and I've never put one and don't really miss it. These rails angle down at a 45 degree angle for 2 or 3. This makes room between the handle and what you are carrying for your hand. At the bottom, there is a shelf with a lip. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Rescreening a long screen
Here is how I re screen a door or window. I take it to my local old fashioned hardware store and have them do it. As a matter of fact, I am taking the upper half, screen frame of my front, screen door to the hardware store this weekend. I will present your problem to him and ask him for some pointers for correcting the problem. If he doesn't think the info is for me, and he might not lose a customer, he might tell me. Incidently, the last time I was there, they had samples of the different screen materials. One was the regular aluminum mesh, the second was the cloth, or maybe fiberglas mesh stuff. The third was very interesting, it was a nylon material, that you could actually push in the middle and it would flex inward, up to about ten inches and go right back to it's original position. It was like holding up some panty hose material and stretching it or pulling it, and it goes right back to it's original shape. Not that I've ever done that with a pair of panty hose, no matter what my wife might tell you. Anyway, I'll let you know if he has any pointers at the hardware store. I have the idea down, and even got the hang of how to do it. However, where I'm having problems and where I'm so damned frustrated I can't think straight, is how in the hell to keep the frame from pulling slightly in toward itself. This is occurring in the middle section of the frame and that causes the screen not to fit correctly into the door. I almost had it, but discovered a tear in the damn screen and I just had to stop because I was out of screen and just to irritated. I think the problem is as I apply the roller and push the spline in, the frame starts to pull. What was suggested to me and may be the issue is I was told it is easier to start at the top and work down both sides at the same time; well do a little of each side as I go. Perhaps I should start at one corner and work my way around the entire frame? Any advice would be really appreciated. I've already wasted two screens at this point since the first one went great until I discovered I could not fit it for the pulled frame problem. If I had some scrap around here, I imagine I could have made a couple of cross members just to keep the frame spread in a uniform manner. Well again, any thoughts appreciated. We have 2 window air conditioners that weigh somewhere around 50 pounds each that are used on the second floor of our house in warm weather, and are stored in the garage during the winter. I personally find air conditioners hard to carry. They are heavy, they're bulky, they have an irregular shape and they are fragile enough that they can't be banged around. I usually drag them from the garage to the house on a garden cart. My difficulty is carrying them through the house and up the stairs without trashing the furniture and walls along the way. The rod that one drops down through the centre of the handle does not serve any essential purpose as it is only used to push weeds off the fork or dirt out of the planter, and this I can do, perfectly well, with my own delicate little paws, so the rod has been permanently removed. Eve had Adam kicked out of the garden? I don't think that Eve can be held entirely responsible. The fact that Adam was a spineless little creep played a major part in his eviction. I didn't buy one at the time, and when I did go to, they were no longer being manufactured. I asked the boss of one of the local engineering firms if he could make one of these tools, and he said, that as it happened, his boys had made some but he thought that what he had had a higher price tab on it than I would want to pay: $250: he was quite right. However, his secretary had told him that she had seen, in a mail order catalogue, a tool with four interchangeable heads that might be just what I wanted. I rang the company and found that it cost only $60. Now you're talking! In the other two, where there should be a centre hole, there is solid steel, beneath which is the stem of the head on the end of which is the blade. Another fault is that the plate to which one bolts the head, rather than being flat is concave, and the bolts that are provided are too short. However, I found some slightly longer bolts among my spares. I rang Enovations, the firm that sold this tool and asked the woman I spoke to if anyone had ever actually inspected the goods that they advertise? for this tool, or half of it at any rate, is, as it stands, completely unfit for the job. RE: [BlindHandyMan] new tile floor- should I seal?
Definitely seal it. It won't wear off since it is absorbed into the grout. All the reasons you stated are reasons you should seal it. It's inexpensive and you or someone sighted should have no trouble applying it, by following the directions on the bottle. You can buy it at Lowes or Home Depot. Hope this helps. The grout color will be a medium shade of bone with the grout lines 1/16 inch wide (the tiles themselves are large-- sorry I can't remember their exact dimensions). Anyway, I am getting conflicting advice as to whether or not to have the grout sealed. Some say sealing it is a waste because the grout line is so thin, the sealant will wear off, and you need to reseal every year. Others say that sealing the grout will help prevent the grout from absorbing food spills and stains (I have a guide dog with a very sensitive stomach), and becoming discolored. What is your advice? You do not need to scrub and clean new grout before applying the sealant. Also, you do not need to re apply ever. It is not going to disappear after a while. I'm in favor for the Saw Stop for those who want to pay for it. The Saw Stop people are trying to make it a law that their product is a mandatory feature of all saws sold. I have a problem with this because I feel I should have the option to have the saw stop or not. I agree, the saw is very nice and smooth; but, this is true for the nicer contracter saws and on up to the cabinet saws. I know exactly what you are saying about blade tilt between the Saw Stop saw and the craftsman. I experienced this upgrading from my ridgid contracter's saw to my grizzly cabinet saw. Saws are dangerous. They cut stuff with a lot of power behind the blade. People need to realize this before they use one. All the manufacturers all have explicit warnings in their documentation. I look at all this like the lady who sued McDonalds for spilling hot coffee in her lap. I'm sure it was painful and a horible experience; but, it was her fault. Terry On Sat, 27 Feb 2010 19:48:13 -0500you write: Hi Woodworkers; I do agree with Bob, that good table saw techniques are needed no matter how safe your saw is. The problem is that a beginner mus t start some where. Not all the blind have training available. I have nicked fingers and have had wood thrown into my chest in the past, but not for a very long time. I also believe that Blind Woodworkers are safer woodworkers than sighted woodworkers in general. I would like to speak in favor of the Saw Stop. I dry a lot of my own wood, and wet wood can fire the safety feature. A nail in the wood is a more common reason for a misfire. The Saw Stop does a have a mode where you can test the wood ahead of time to see if it will fire on the wood. This test is done w ithout the blade running. But if I had two misfires, I still would be willing to buy another cartridge and blade. Another point about the Saw Stop is that it is a very nice table saw. I took an angle measurement with a TO bevel. I took that m easurement to a dado blade on the SawStop, turn the wheel, and I was very impressed on how easy it was to bring the blade to that angle. With my craftsman table saw, I would have to go back and fourth several times to get that angle. With the Saw Stop, I was able to bring the blade right to that angle. So to make sure, I went past and then went down. It was very easy. The fence is very easy, but many saws have that kind of fence. Over all, even with the safety feature turned off, it is an excellent saw. But it is hard to beat with the safety feature on. I would certainly be paranoid about sleeping in the yard in a tent with children. Look at the news this past week, a 16 year old girl couldn't even jog in a park in San Diego without getting raped and killed. Wow! That's amazing technology. Trouble is, I use my table saw to cut wieners. Just kidding. Tom, The SawStop table saw has a feature that if the blade hits something wet and conductive, like, say, a finger, it fires a bar into the blade stopping the blade in some insanely short period of time. The demonstration is always of running a hotdog into the spinning blade and the hotdog is barely nicked. However, it destroys the blade, and requires a new explosive cartridge after it fires. You also need to use an over-ride if you are cutting wet wood. Never-the-less, it is an insurance policy against a time when your judgment or concentration falters for a split second. -- Blue skies. RE: [BlindHandyMan] room addition
Just wondering, since you were complaining about the price of the 12 - 3 wire. First of all, Couldn't you have used 14 gauge wire instead of 12 gauge? What else is on this circuit? If it's just a few lights, you only need 14 gauge and 15 amp switches and breaker.. Secondly, you don't need 3 wires plus ground from the breaker box to the switch, as that only requires 2 wire plus ground. Third, you only need 2 wires plus ground from the last switch to the fixture. Forth, since you are using 12 gaugewire, are you also using switches and a breaker rated for 20 amps? If not, you should understand that you don't need wire that will carry the 20 amps either. I'm not trying to be critical, just trying to show that you may not meed to use 12 gauge wire and you may not need to use it from breaker to switch or switch to fixture, therefore you could save a lot of money on the price of the wire. If you haven't used any of the wire on that big 250 foot roll, you could return it and buy the cheaper 14 gauge and possibly a much shorter role. Dan, here is an article from a Burgh paper. My wife is from the Burgh and gets articles like this. text of forwarded message follows: Don't flip, homeowners, just let the water drip Friday, February 19, 2010 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette When water is dripping down your walls and pooling on the floor, you don't want to hear someone say: Do nothing. Yet, that's probably the best advice roofers and insurance agents have for the thousands of homeowners affected this week by ice dams. If you are one of them, your best hope for relief is that temperatures go up or down -- soon. Every house has tons of icicles hanging from gutters. It's very picturesque but it's bad news for homeowners and for us, said David Thomas of Thomas McMenamin, an Upper St. Clair insurance agency. Mr. Thomas, a part owner, has heard from nearly two dozen homeowners complaining of interior leaking over the last two weeks. And he's expecting a lot more. As long as temperatures stay around freezing, snow and ice will continue to thaw and refreeze on the roof, where ice at the edge holds back water behind it. That water works its way through the shingles -- even climbing up a pitched roof -- and drips down inside the walls, damaging wallboard, trim, insulation and sometimes flooring. So what can you do? Nothing, except catch or mop up the water you can see and maybe poke a hole in the wall or ceiling to drain what you can't see. Sam W. Gregg, 79, of Peters, said that about four days ago, he and his wife noticed water dripping down a window in the dining room of their 50-year-old home. Then, the same thing happened in their living room and two bedrooms. Since it was a little warmer today, it's getting heavier, he said Thursday. I'm worried that it will get worse. The Greggs replace soaked towels on the windowsills every six hours or so. They haven't filed a homeowners claim yet but figured they should let Mr. Thomas know. Mr. Thomas said most water damage claims will be covered. And since large insurance carriers have designated this a catastrophe loss, homeowners' rates generally won't be affected. However, that doesn't mean insurance companies will replace your roof, or pay to make sure this doesn't happen again. For that, you'll have to wait until the ice and snow are gone. Installing loops of heat tape -- electrical wire or tape that can be plugged into an outlet -- will create gaps in the ice at the eaves to allow water to run off. An even better solution is to have a roofer install an ice and water shield beneath the bottom 3 or 4 feet of shingles. This adhesive rubber membrane will prevent water trapped behind an ice dam from getting through. But no one -- roofers included -- should be working up there now. Even if you could safely work on an icy, pitched roof, removing snow or chipping away ice won't help and might just make it worse. So for now, experts say, mop up, stay off the roof and pray that temperatures drop into the 20s and stay there. As long as it's ice, it can't drip into your house. Then hope temperatures gradually reach the 40s, and that ice in the gutters finally melts. John, Wow! Thanks for the info. I had no idea you could plug a USB cable into the cartridge. I may buy a cartridge some day, depending on the price and amount of memory. IÂ’ll agree with one problem with the new digital player and that is the thumb drive is located on the side where it is very vulnerable to being broken off. Other than that, I love the player. How much money did they get to develop it and also who do you mean by they?Personally, I think they’re amazing.A 100 percent improvement over the cassette tape players and it didn’t cost me anything. Also, yes it does use a flash drive, if you choose, instead of the cartridge with the book pre loaded and mailed to you. That is all I use is a flash drive, that plugged into the USB port on the player. If your player doesn’t use a flash drive then you must have a proto type or something else, which would probably explain why you don’t like it. That extracts several files that then appear. Copy those files to the USB flash memory device, preferably into folder that you reserve for NLS books. Hi Dan Step One (Refer to Figure 1.) Connect the ground (bare wire) wire to the device box and cut it off approximately one inch past the ground screw. Connect the black wire to one screw and the white wire (hot) to the other screw on the switch. Figure 1. Note: This is the only time that you want to use a white wire as the hot conductor. This is done so you are left with a black and a white wire at the light instead of two whites to hook up to your light. Step Two (Refer to Figure 2.) Usually you will have a 2 conductor #14 http://www.electrical-online.com/Lightsandswitches.htm cable coming from the light box to the switch box. Conductor is a fancy word for wire and #14 is the size of wire you will use throughout 95% of your house. Figure 2. Not that I have any immediate plans of rewiring, but this question popped in my head. I think I've seen a comment about this here before. If you are wiring a switch to a light fixture, do you: #1: Run a set of wires from the power source to the switch, and a set of wires from the switch to the light fixture. In this case, connecting both blacks to the switch terminals, and tieing the two whites together? Do you just stuff the white splice in the box with the switch? #2: Run a set of wires from the power source to the light fixture, and a set of wires from the switch to the light fixture. In this case, The white from the power would connect to the white on the light, and the two switch wires would be connected between the black power, and black light wires. It technically wouldn't matter which orientation you connected the switch wires, but is there a standard? I mean, black power, to black switch, then white switch to black fixture. #3: I assume this one is definitely wrong, but similar to #2. Run power directly to the light fixture, then just interrupt the black wire at some point with the switch wires. I believe choice #1 is the correct option, but is choice #2 against code? Choice #3 seems to be the most efficient use of wire, no parallel runs of wire, but would make it a pain in the ass to ever trace an issue since you wouldn't necessarily know where the switch spliced into the power line. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Zip Car.
For us, life is too short to be spending it without a vehicle. My wife would be gone two hours longer each day if she had to find other transportation to go to and from work. Also, waiting for a cab around here can take an hour or so going and the same returning. I'd rather pay the cost of vehicle ownership than to waste hour after hour waiting for transportation and I certainly wouldn't burden my friends or relatives for a rides. Life is just too short. We have a van so anything we buy, including sheets of plywood or drywall can easily be transported in any weather. If no one in the house is sighted or can't drive for some other reason, that's another story. But, if someone can drive, why spend valuable time looking for and waiting for a way to get somewhere. Do you think we could get a half dozen sheets of drywall on a public bus? I have a 100 pound Propane tank outside the house. I have three Propane appliances that run off that tank. They are an ordinary cook stove, an ordinary double oven, and a Propane space heater. The stove and oven burn perfectly cleanly, no smell, nothing, just heat. The space heater gives off smoke, it stinks, and the walls all around the living room where the heater is are darkened about ten feet off the floor. Why do the stove and oven burn so cleanly and the heater so dirty? I know I'm supposed to clean the heater every year. Why is it that I never have to clean the stove or the oven? Thanks. RE: [BlindHandyMan] bluebird house question
Try rough sawn fence boards from Lowwes or Home Depot. They're about 5 and a half inches by 6 feet and cheap. Not a full 3 forths thick, but that wont matter. Built in roughness so you won't have to score the inner front surface.I think you can buy cedar or treated. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Gluing up
Once I used elmers regular glue, not the wood glue, to glue and clamp together 7 pieces of one by sixes, 14 inches long to make a lamp on the lathe. This was in high school. a guy came by and turned the speed up too fast and the lamp came off the lathe, hit the tool rest, split in half. It slplid along the side where all the sides of the boards were but did not seperate where the boards were glued. Strong stuff. Using good old elmers for example I apply from the bottle just a thin coat to both sides and then make sure I clamp well. Clean up of course is always a necessity, but too much glue is just messy and waistfull. The paper plate is just waiste paper and glue. When I applied hide glue to violin parts I used a very thin knife, not sharp but like a table knife but very thin. This acted as a spreader but since it was metal it wouldn't absorb any hot hide glue but just acted as a carrier and spreader. On very large joins I sometimes used a small brush but then I always warmed the pieces to be joined and tried again to get just enough glue. If you clamp well, you'll force the glue to distribute properly. prep and clamping is the big secret more glue won't help if things aren't clean, fitting and stable while drying. Hope that gives you some ideas tom Fowle [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

You can find a scriber stuck into your combination square. After drilling the top holes use the scribed line then with a centre square mark a line on the opposite side of the pipe and run a line along that side. If you just drill straight through the first time you might not have the pipe centred exactly and you will find it is out somewhat. I drilled a piece of pipe the other day when I was making a jig and found I had to start again because the holes were out so do it correctly the first time and it will turn out spot on. I share my drive with a neighbour, it is 32 feet wide and a little over 85 feet to the road. I can't run a noisy machine 85 feet in a straight line and I worry too about where the snow is actually flying, wouldn't want to throw a chunk of something through a neighbours car window or a passing pedestrian. All that notwithstanding, I had thought of setting a 4 foot length of iron pipe into a bucket of cement, 30 pounds or so, one at each end of the run with a light rope pulled between and use that as a guide. Maybe a little tedious moving the standards at the end of each run but it might require only 12 or 15 repetitions to cover the full 32 foot width. The other problem of course is that most of these machines now require both hands on the clutches to keep the thing in motion which leaves at least one too few for additional guidance. So far this winter we have mostly only had a couple of inches at a time although nearly every day but a big dump and I am going to be in trouble. We used to have a chap with a plough on the front of his truck but that isn't an option this year and my neighbour objects to having a front end loader on the new lock stone pavers. Like Bob, I expect you would need a very loud alarm to hear over the roar of a snow thrower and the ear covering required to keep the ears from freezing. Just why it hasn't become popular to make those engines quieter eludes me. RE: [BlindHandyMan] base boards and painting
Jennifer, I'll give you two tips. Number 1, run a bead of caulk where ever two wood panels come together, before painting. If you don't the paint will have a hard time filling in the gap. I'd also caulk at the top of the baseboard and anywhere else there is a gap. Number 2, Nail the quarter round to the baseboard prior to painting them. Quarter round comes in various sizes, 1 quarter inch, half inch, three quarter inch, etcetera, so buy the size you need to cover the gap, where the carpet was. Also, when putting the quarter round in, place the end of shims under it about every foot or so. Then after nailing them in, take them out and you will end up with a small gap, which will allow you to place paper under the quarter round to mask it off for painting, so you won't get paint on the floor. Hope this helps. Kevin, I had a problem with my AC unit keeping up a few summers ago. The repairman came and told me he wouldn't charge me anything if I just cleaned the outside unit myself. He told me to just hose it down by spraying from the outside toward the inside of the unit all the Way around it. He said if that didn't work, he would come back and see if there is another problem. I gave it a good spraying for about 15 minutes and turned it back on. It has been fine ever since. I sprayed it again last year just to keep the dirt from accumulating again. The repair guy told me there is a cleaning agent available that is supposed to help dissolve the dirt, but, that I really didn't need to use it. He said it is available at heat and AC supply stores but they only had it in a large container and you dilute it with water and it is very expensive because there is enough stuff in the bottle to clean a hundred units. Also a second water filter on your bathroom lavatories and your kitchen sink and one on your refrigerator, if you have a ice maker or ice and water thru the door. This is just me what I would do. RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys
By the way the garage that diagnosed the problem wanted $400 for them to furnish and install the alternator themselves. I paid them $25 to diagnose the problem and saved a total of $175 by purchasing it from Auto Zone and installing it myself. We took it to the garage and was told that the alternator was putting out inconsistent voltage. The voltage would not run steady, which should be regulated by an internal voltage regulator. We bought a new alternator for our 2001 Ford Windstar van for about 200 dollars and I put it in myself in less than an hour. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Happy Holidays!
Hey Max. How's it going with the new band saw? Did you have to act surprised when you got it on Christmas? Making anything yet? I love the new Craftsman table saw. It's much more quiet than the old Delta. I especially like the built in dust collection bag. With the sawdust bag, I can use it in the house now instead of just in the basement. I received a click rule for one of my gifts. I don't understand the design of the tool. Under the knob there is a piece of metal that sticks down about a half inch or more. Near the other end there is also a flat piece of metal that is about 1/8 inch. Because of the difference it is impossible to set it level on a surface.
