Bob, This is an excellent point. My experience with auto, or computer repair is unless you can duplicate the problem or there are certain predictable things that happen before it occurs, more often than not the repair shop can't find out what's wrong. RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys
This exact thing happened to my wife just one month ago. We took it to the garage and was told that the alternator was putting out inconsistent voltage. The voltage would not run steady, which should be regulated by an internal voltage regulator. We bought a new alternator for our 2001 Ford Windstar van for about 200 dollars and I put it in myself in less than an hour. Pproblem was fixed. . -Original Message- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:blindhandy...@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Lenny McHugh Sent: Saturday, January 09, 2010 11:24 PM To: handyman-blind Subject: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys Earlier this evening my wife was driving home. Re: [BlindHandyMan] question about wood filler
I doubt a filler will hold screws, If you have the space, how about drilling out the screw holes to maybe 3/8ths inch and gluing dowels in them to take the new screw holes then filling in the rest with plastic wood before sand and finishing. Drill for the dowels as deep as you dare to give yiu plenty of gripping surface. Even if you replaced the wood with a new chunk and could ,match the color, you'd want to put in some pins between tghe new and old wood to gain strength Tom

This is at a screw whole. I will need to build this place up with some sort of wood filler or plastic wood or something then re drill a screw whole. Now this filled in place will be visible when the fall board is raised. So my question, or two questions are; 1. what do I need to fill in this place to be strong enough to drill a pilot whole and put a screw in? 2. Will touch up pencels work to cover the newly replaced surface, allowing I can get the right color of touch up pencel or pencels? I know touch up penceles work on real wood but what about on wood fillers? I am about to run out. I have a ride coming, so, if you can respond quickly I would appreciate it. Thanks. Re: [BlindHandyMan] question about wood filler
In my admittedly limited experience you can't drill and put screws into filler. I once repaired the leg of a swivel chair. I mean the part where the caster shaft goes in. The wood had broken away around the hole. The previous owner had tried to glue the original pieces back and that lasted about 5 seconds. I bought it off him for 5 dollars.I completely cut away the damaged wood making straight smooth cuts. Then I got a block of the same kind of wood and glued it in place. Then I planed and sanded it down to be smooth and drilled a new hole for the caster shaft. I sold it several years ago for 25 dollars and as far as I know it is still holding together. I didn't take the final step of finishing the added piece to match but it could be done and with care it should be invisible. Your situation is very different than mine because your break is in a highly visible area and on something that must be made to look as good as new. Regards. Max. K 4 O D S. Re: [BlindHandyMan] question about remote garage door openers
I just got a new remote for my garage door, and the instructions said that I had to press the learn button on the motor part of the opener, then, when the green light flashed, I was to press the button to open the door, at which point, the motor would pick up the signal of the remote, and use it to open the garage door when ever the button was pressed. actually there is a sonic difference in high end applications. re: 2% and 4% silver/tin regularly used. But the temp shock aspects I didn't know. Disimilar metals can make it interesting. I do seem to recall that european fuses may be blow' at rated current and U.S. are'flow through at rated current. changing fuse ratings should make no difference to how the device operates, fuse resistance is minuscual compaired to the impedance of the device. Temperature can be one consideration, but the main reason for using the silver in a c work is its ability to withstand the greater pressures. Its cost would keep me from using it for everyday electrical soldering which is usually mechanically sound first and uses the solder for the best connection and reduce any corrosion inside a joint if it is just wrapped. I don't see a problem with this. Oh course in the U S we normally start at 15 and then go to 20, 25, 30 etc unless someone is using the old fuse stats which are about extinct. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List 4 wire to 3
What Max told you earlier is basically true. But do not assume anything. Check between the two hot wires to be sure you have 240 volts between them. They could have been hooked to the same phase for some unknown reason. The one thing I learned many times over about electricity is check, check, check try it and then check again. Just to make some things clear is the white of the three wire cable on the tub grounded to metal or just running to one side of a pump motor and or controller? If yes then the fourth wire, green or bare from the source will hook to any metal and or the metal water pipes in the tub. The green, grounding wire shall never carry current, unless there is a fault. The white carries the other side of 120 volt loads. ray, We'll see what Ron thinks, but I'd not bother changing for just an ampere of difference. The rating of the fuse is the current it will pass in normal operation NOT, as some think, the current required to blow it. You're only up by an amp even if the caravan pulls its full 15 amps, so no deal. tom
Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List 4 wire to 3
Problem might be that you don't know for sure that the 2 120 volt lines are actually from the two sides of the service. There may be an easier way, but I think you'll need an A.C. voltmeter that goes at least to 250 volts to chec between the two hots to see that they are actually 240 volts apart. They could be just 2 120s from two breakers on the same side of the service. Tom

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List 4 wire to 3
On a normal breaker panel, every other breaker is the same polarity and will give a zero voltage reading to each other. In a three phase panel every third breaker is the same. The reason for it is any one single breaker is 120 volt usually. A double 220 volt breaker can be plugged in anywhere and have 220 volt. On a three phase panel a three phase breaker can be plugged in anywhere and you will have three phase power. There are some that aren't, but they center in commercial applications. ..bob [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List 4 wire to 3
The 4 wire cable will have two hots, a neutral and a safety ground. The two hots are on opposite sides of the line and there is 240 volts between them. But between each hot and neutral there is 120 volts. So you connect each 120 volt outlet between its own hot and the common neutral. The ground must be connected to the safety ground of the outlets. Never connect the neutral of the outlet to the safety ground and never connect the ground and the neutral together except at the electrical panel. Regards. Max. K 4 O D S. Hi Claudia, In most cases, the magnetic strip will survive being washed and spun with your clothes, delicates included, so no worries there. In fact, those are the least of your problems, as I know how difficult it can be having water come into your home, and not being able to stop it until it's too late and the damage is done. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question about Demagnetizing Cards?
I doubt the cards are demagnetized from running in a dryer. Even with static electricity they should be insulated inside a pocket. The bigger problem may be scratched from rubbing together. Only way to know if they have a problem will be to use them again. - Original Message - From: Claudia To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, March 10, 2009 3:27 AM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Question about Demagnetizing Cards? Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question about Demagnetizing Cards?
I think you did a great job at remembering what you did Claudia . grins. I have washed a whle pocketbook. why because someone was staying here and she was used to hiding her pocketbook in the washer. Low and behold she hears the washer running , now headed for the second rinse when she told me her pocketbook was in there.. Now, think of this. this is our house and at the end of a wash, yes, I do check the machine for any leftover socks , nails or whateer. but prior to doing a wash why would I want to recheck the machine.. so that no longer happy camper got all clean credit cards, license and what ever a woman would carry in her pocketbook , oops, yes she also had a mini vise grip . well she was lucky as it was sunny so she could spread alll her stuff out on the [pinic table. my words just simply say we are all human and we all make mistakes whether you live in a house, a apartment or mobile home out in the boondocks. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question about getting your basement repaired
Betsy, Yes, we did have a flood here, back in September! We did apply for FEMA funding, but all we received was $487. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but that didn't even do anything for us, except get someone to come out and pull out all of the drywall and tile that was laid, over the cement floor! TThis problem has not been fixed, as of yet, and again, I just don't know where the money would come from! It's steadily raining here, and the water just keeps seeping in! We're under flash flood warnings, until 2 PM. tomorrow afternoon! So, when I have the Mac and PC laptop connected and running, everything is fine. If I shut the laptop lid/ put it to sleep, but leave it connected, I get this humming noise that is not 60Mhz, but probably almost twice that. I can disconnect the laptop and then soud goes away or if I adjust the mixer controls just so, I can cancel out the sound. For some reason it sometimes gets messed up and that usually is because I have made a slight adjustment to something and then I have to start all over again isulating the sound by tweaking things. So, has anyone have any thoughts on how I might correct this problem, so I do not have to keeep messing with the controls? It could be the mixer, but I suspect there is an issue with both machines being connected to the KVM and this is a pretty cheap KVM. The KVM is not near the computers, it is under my desk. Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on interference form computers
It is both computers causing the noise and it could be they are creating some sort of loop. I dont' know the technical term, but removing either does eliminate the noise. Like I said, just tweaking the mixer will generally remove or put the sound way in the background. So, it is not a really big deal, but I would like to understand what the cause is. Hey Max I don't live near a transmitter of any sort, but a ground loop would make sense. What this board has is quarter-inch inputs and one per channel. So, I use two inputs for stero output. I assume these are balanced inputs, but I am a little embarrassed to say I don't know exactly the difference between the two types. I used ot know this stuff, but I have forgotten it oer the years. I'm not sure how I could address the ground loop issue, but I have a few ideas and maybe disconnecting the laptop from ac power might yield some results, or just pulling the audio cable out of the mixer for the laptop and see what happens. tnx, On Mar 2, 2009, at 9:18 PM, Max Robinson wrote: You may have a ground loop. Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on interference form computers
Thanks, unfortunately this one is. The good thing is I have found a way to cancel out the noise for the most part, but at the same time it would be nice to really figure out what is going on. I'm wondering if there is possibly an issue with the cable not being insulated enough. These patch cable are just rca cables that terminate in a 1/8-inch plug. Of course the mixer is not a very expensive or of the highest quality I'm sure either. tnx On Mar 3, 2009, at 7:33 AM, Gerry Leary wrote: Try turning the power plug of the laptop over in the socket if it is not polarized. Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on interference form computers
Hi Scott, Max's idea of using ballanced inputs may work if your mixer has them, but I doubt that it does, that's usually limited to commercial audio gear. What you probably need to do is break the ground to one or other of the computers, probably the laptop. Now, of course, just breaking the ground won't work because you'd loose signal. What you need is transformer isolation. There are setups intended to connect audiofrom ham radios to computers that perform this trick, but they aren't cheap and may require a deal of fiddling around to adapt to your setup. I wonder if somebody makes a transformer isolated stereo cable? I'll look around and see if i find anything. I'm pretty sure radio shlock makes small audio transformers having a 1 to 1 turns ratio which is what you need, but I assume you're not into doing much soldering up of cables your self. With all the similar hookups people are doing these days an isolated cable should be a product whose time has come. As for understanding ground loops, read what max's site has to say, and know that you need a degree in magnetics and that may not even help. Basically when you have lots of stuff with common grounds which of course have nothing at all to do with real earth ground, runnig through lots of wires, noise energy couples between and amongst them and things end up at different potentials in relationship to each other thus generating unexpected current flow where you don't want it--- hum. Everybody nuts yet? If not, why not, i tried! GRIN Tom
Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on interference form computers
hey Tom, thanks and depending upon the soldering, I might be up for the task. I do pretty well with soldering cables together. NEver could quite get the hang of soldering wire to those small pins you find on boards and such. You might just have a point and I'll have to try a few things I guess, but the transformer sounds interesting. The kvn shouldn't have a problem with that setup. however, if you think it is, unplug it and see if hum goes away. That will tell for sure if the laptop is doing it or the kvn. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Question about smoke alarms
Betsy, It is recommended to replace the batteries every six months, The time change in the fall and spring use to be good times, but now the government screwed that up But know, from my experience with them, they should not all beep when the battery gets low in one. I would have the wiring checked out. If they are not connected right, they might not work when they need to. And if they are more then 7 years old they should be replaced. Each detector should have 3 wires, white, black, and red. The white and black are for the power, and the red is the signal wire, that tells them to go off together. It is simple to hook up, just make sure all colors are matched up with each other. Then their should be a test button on them, press the test button on one, and they all should go off. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question about smoke alarms
Betsy I have no experience with the wired in ones, but the battery only ones I've used all get low battery after 6 months or so. It's always at 3:30 in the morning too, makes one wonder about the sadism of the designers. I would be suspicious about the situation your friend has, it does not sound correct that alarms with good batteries beep and the bad one doesn't I'd call the manufacturere and see if they know. Of course they were probably made in china and have high levels of fake protine! GRIN tom Fowle
Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question about smoke alarms
How about asking the fire department if they can help ssince the alarm is no longer doing its job to warn neighbors of a possible fire? I'd be more worried about the abandoned character of the home as an attractive neusence to any local questionable characters. tom
Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question about smoke alarms
with this discussion of either hard wired or just battery folks might want to think of a new place they are interested in, if they so choose to move. I say this as a friend of mine has the same problem as Betsy friend but it seems that the one detctor that is hard wired in a fairly new modular 2 story home goes beserk. and wouldn't you know it that detector needs someone with at least a 16 foot step ladder because of the heigth in a very high stairwell ceiling. so when we are looking for a new place to live consider what will I have to do to maintain this place. Pratical is not always easy but it is something to consider. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question about smoke alarms
This is a true story. I live in Hawaii and went to visit my grandma in California. My grandma's smoke alarm chirped for about five weeks. She thought she had a cricket in her bathroom and all but scrubbed the paint off the wals with pine sol trying to get rid of that cricket. I happened to visit her and said, Oh Grandma, good I'm here. I can change the battery in your smoke alarm. Needless to say I was the heroine of the month with my grandma. So, Lenny, there may be no relief in ear for awhile. By vibration we need to get a bit more specific. A warped rotor doesn't vibrate at 25 to 40, it feels more like jerking. A smooth run, a jerk or bump and a smooth run again. The bumping or jerking gets slower obviously as you slow down. I could happen, especially if the rotors got turned too thin the last time. I've known some um well idiots is really too nice a word. But I've known of people that read the specs on the brake lathe and think that is what the first cut should be. If the lathe says it can cut 90 thousandths in one pass then by god that's what you have to do. 90 thousandths off any rotor will put it under the minimum. If it is thin and slammed home with a tire gun they can warp fairly quickly. Not a couple weeks I wouldn't think though. I have known the outer pad to be put on without either putting the anti vibration glue on, or not bending the tabs to keep the pad tightly in place. Those situations cause a vibration that is often loud as well. When the brakes are applied you hear sometimes a squealing or a humming type sound. That isn't nearly as dangerous as it is annoying. But since it started after brake work, I'd take it back and see what they offer. One thing you can do on your own is to take a wrench to the lugs and make sure they tightened them all. 1 left loose won't cause a serious problem, I have had to run a race car on 3 lugs on 1 wheel before. But that isn't the brightest way to go. Take a torque wrench if you have one and 75 to 80 footpounds will keep the wheels on. If it's just while driving and not using the brakes, we are all off base. That would go back to the balancing of the tires, or it's possible a belt has shifted in a tire and that has to be replaced real quick. A shifted belt causes tremendous heat and will explode the tire. It's possible a balance weight wasn't completely mounted and has come off through centrifugal force. We have to be clear on whether it is a braking or regular driving condition in any event to head in the right direction. - Original Message - From: Lenny McHugh [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2008 10:57 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys Bob, not sure how to describe it. It is very slight at 25 but very prominate at 45 or 50. - Original Message - From: Bob Kennedy [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2008 10:48 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys A long shot but I bought new tires once and had a bad vibration right afterwards. When I got home I popped the cap off and found the problem right off. The idiot put the lugs on backwards so the tapered end faced away from the wheel... Diagnosing by email is much harder. If you don't have a torque wrench, take a socket or something and make sure everything is tight. - Original Message - From: Lenny McHugh [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: handyman-blind blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2008 6:43 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys We have a 2003 grand caravan sport all wheel drive. RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys
Lenny, Did they turn the rotors when you had the brakes done the last time? In my unhumble professional opinion not turning or replacing rotors when doing pads is akin to not using toilet paper. If they were turned once you can probably plan on replacing them. There is a minimum thickness that brake rotors can be machined to, I think it is 10MM. Warped or thin rotors is probably the vibration she is feeling. -Original Message- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Lenny McHugh Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2008 4:44 PM To: handyman-blind Subject: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys We have a 2003 grand caravan sport all wheel drive. I agree with Lary and will add this; Check that all your lug nuts are tightened to the proper torque. I had some young kid working at the garage where I get mine inspected, over tighten the lug nuts and had a similar vibration. One other thing, check to make sure they tightened the caliper . A loose caliper could cause a chatter when the brakes are applied. - Original Message - From: Larry Stansifer To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2008 19:00 Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys Lenny, Did they turn the rotors when you had the brakes done the last time?
