[BVARC] lightning safety

2024-05-28 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC
I have used outside antennas for most of my life and never had a lightning
strike (that i know of)
I always hear Hams going to take down an antennaor unscrew the coax when a
storm is coming.
I WOULD NEVER EVER touch a coax or antenna if I couldhear thunder or if a storm
was near..
Trying to protect your gear may end your life.

I'm sure someone knows about Mobile antennas. Our friends at River Oaks Car
Stereo for sure. Anthony? Here is my dilemma , or something I am doing wrong.
I bought this antenna to mount on my new truck. I have a brand new Comet
analyzer. The antenna is hood lip mounted with a comet Hood mount. When I
analyze the raw antenna thru its one piece of coax, it is perfect 1.5 or less
on 2Meters @ 50ohms. But when I dial up  to 440 Mhz, the swr and Ohms is off
the chart. My radio is my old reliable Kenwood TMV71 of which I have 3 identical.
Shouldn't I be able to just change the band knob to 430 and it read good SWR?
Do I have to find the resonant point of the upper band and start trimming the
top length down to 440 good swr?I'm perplexed or doing something dumb.

 Hello BVARC!
Spring is halfway over, and summer is fast approaching. This May the club will
mostly be preparing for our big on air events in June (Museum Ships and ARRL
Field Day). There's lots of preparation to be done for June so if you have time
to volunteer for either of these events or to participate as an operator,
please see the details below and mark your calendars!
Museum Ships weekend will be the topic for our next club meeting on Thursday
May 9th. Mark Janzer (K5MGJ) is the coordinator for the event and if you're
interested in helping out he's your guy! Send him an email at k5...@yahoo.com.
The event takes place at Seawolf Park in Galveston on Saturday June 1st to
Sunday June 2nd (with some setup happening in the days before).
ARRL Field Day is another major event coming up in June both for the hobby and
for BVARC. This year BVARC's Field Day event will be at Duhacsek Park in Sugar
Land. The event spans Saturday June 22nd to Sunday June 23rd (with set up on
the Friday before). Richard Bonica (KG5YCU) is coordinating this year's BVARC
Field Day event and if you would like to help make the event a success by
volunteering or operating, please email Richard at kg5...@gmail.com. Keep an
ear out for more information as the final details of the event get published.
As always, please check out our website BVARC.org for updates, and for
information on our weekly in-person events, nets, and other resources. The May
Newsletter should be posted soon on the BVARC.org website. Don't forget about
our social media as well! We have a Facebook Page, a Discord Server, and
YouTube channel for the club. Add the BVARC Calendar to your calendar app (by
clicking the link here), all events for the next 30 days should be on that
calendar as well as others as we confirm their dates.

I never found anyone to listen to.

All of the below suggestions are VERY good. I would like to also add that you
should turn on that radio, tune into a QSO and just listen for a bit. Then
another and another… The idea is to get an idea of the lingo and pace of the
conversation. That with the extra education you will get from someone showing
you the ropes will do wonders. Even if you don’t see anyone, listening to
different QSO’s will give you a great sense of what and how to conduct yourself
on the radio.

Lastly, GET ON THE AIR. You have to jump into the water sometime. Send a
message out on this email chat and say “hey, I’m going to be on X freq at X
time. Someone come talk with me to get familiar.” I’m sure you’ll end up with a
pileup within a short amount of time.

Subject: [BVARC] How to HAM?

First, let me preface my request for help by saying that I am a Mechanical
Engineer and I still have no idea what is going on. I collect lots of data on
rotating and fixed equipment, and I understand Control systems just enough to
be dangerous.

That said, I have had my General license for almost a year, and I still have no
idea how to operate a ham radio, how to communicate with anyone or find
channels to communicate on. I freely admit that the amount of time that I spend
trying to learn is minimal, because of other priorities at the moment. I don’t
have any friends who are into ham, and I am rarely able to make BVARC functions
like the POTA.

How in the world do you get started if you don’t know where to begin? Sorry, I
am just lost.

Now I seem to understand it was

I agree that in person interaction is better than online. There is nothing
preventing a group of people from getting together to connect to the zoom
meeting from a single location. That would create an ideal Hybrid situation to
allow for those who need extended neurological enhancements to communicate with
those who may be on the road traveling or have family responsibilities that
prevent them from spending the extra time traveling. Houston is an hour from
Houston, and with 350+ members spread wide and far, Zoom allows any of those
members to attend a meeting with an illness or without the extra burden of
having to put some pants on to go somewhere.

The hybrid option would create a win-win for all.

in-person meetings excel over virtual ones when deepening relationships,

in-person meetings excel over virtual ones when deepening relationships,
handling complex discussions, and fostering team building and brainstorming

The club was started in 1978 WAY BEFORE ZOOM..  All the members Drove to
meetings...If they were blind or old, they caught rides with other members.
If they are too lazy to make an in person meeting, they MAY be too lazy to care
about our club?
COVID forced us into ZOOM Now lets get back to normal...

Purely speculative, one or more board members may prefer to dress down for the
occasion with their Zoom mullet for the meetings (aka in-person meetings would

More likely the answer would be that the various board members are spread out
over the city and Zoom makes it very convenient without 2 hours of round trip
travel… and allows for anyone of the 350+ members to attend from anywhere in
the world.

The meetings I have attended, majority of the board had their cameras on, so
face to face did occur.

Re: [BVARC] Changes to the POTA Event

2024-01-31 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC
Im sorry to hear that .. I think POTA is amazing and fills so many blanks for
BVARC and the Ham radio community...
1) can you ever beat a beautiful day in the park2) be a catch (cause a pileup)
3) Afternoon with some great friends4) opportunity to welcome new folks to HAM
and to BVARC..
Suzanne and I bought BVARC banners and other stuff out of our own pocketsto
help bring the POTA MASTERS in as a BVARC EVENT.. All has been workinggreat as
far as I knew..
I have posted on this before I think, but again at the last BOARD meeting there
wassome questions about using the club call, about illegal operations and
otherquestions a board member(s) posed..    even though the board didset a
budget to help POTA ..  the masters felt disrespected and .. well
The POTA MASTERS got butt hurt... I dont blame them, they dont use BVARC
equipment, they use their own radios(and other volunteer radios)..
Like I said before, BVARC NEEDS POTA, more then POTA needs BVARC.POTA is super
popular, I think our board members and especially our PRESIDENTneeds to be
kissin some POTA  A*S...!!
These POTA guys are SUPERSTARS!
BVARC needs to make this a priority.. If you do not agree or do not understand
POTA please GO TO POTA EVENT..  it is true ham radio at its finest..

I ask our board to REALIZE how important this is,buy a couple POTA radios,
really make it a BVARC EVENT support these guys..
And I ask our POTA MASTERS to take the stupid abuse for a minute and forgive
the MORONS that hurt your feelings and lets have some fun..
Eddie Runner (NU5K)in the last year a lot of folks seem to get hurt feelings..
WISE UP BOD..we need to welcome folks not run them off..

Hello all,                I am writing this message to let everybody
know about the changes we are making to the BVARC POTA Event. We will no longer
be running the event as a BVARC (Brazos Valley Armature Radio Club) affiliated
one. We will not be doing it every month. We will however still do the event
for the city. This means we are inviting every club in the city of Houston and
beyond. We are looking into a way to let everyone know when and where we are
going to do the event. For now February the 25th is the last BVARC sponsored
POTA Event. We are looking at doing it six times out of the year. Times will be
determined by the event managers. More info to come on the upcoming events and
where to find us.       Thanks,       Your Friendly POTA Operators

In the past at the banquet there have been some good speakers with neat

So in closing to  those that are putting together the banquet please consider a

What are some respectful reasons you were not able to attend this year ie:

the way I understand that it is SUPPOSED to work is the NON member price is
fullpriceand the MEMBER PRICE is cheaper because it is partially subsidized by
BVARC..
So that means the meal we had last year (or what was planned for this year)
shouldbe a $50 value..!!
The club and the fellowship and the fun we had at last years banquet was
probably worth$50 (to me).. But not the food...  And heck the venue probably
didnt cost us a thing last year.
THE TOP PAST VENUES ARE
The Marriot in sugarland  andMagianos near the Galleria
Folks can check the past newsletters if they forget all the places we have had
banquets
PLUS, I have also heard that some folks may want to attend and NOT EAT

LOUSY survey Jeff.. Whats the goal here?
none of your 4 survey questions will help the banquet.
1) restaurant or catered..         IMO this is irrelevant,  we have had good
and bad restaurants and good and bad caterers..2) What type of food would we
like?       IMO this is not worded to get a reasonable response..    Chineese?
Hot dogs? Steak? Niko Nikos??       IMO the date gathered from this question
really wont help us.3) What day of the week?  Com on no one will ever agree on
this ...  WHY ASK???4)  What price range?      This is a better question, but
it should be worded something like        As a BVARC member what price per
person do you think is appropriate for a nice dinner and a nice meeting place?
(this will get a variety of prices), so the club can choose .. With the
way you worded it I would be inclined        to just choose the lowest
number... This rewording is more like how much would you pay MAX...        then
it would be easier for BVARC to choose a better value for the member since the
banquet is (traditionally)        partially subsidized by the club for club
members... Means club member is getting  a good deal...             As is $35 a
person, geez I can eat all the catfish I can stuff in for less than $15 at many
places..    Unless we are doing something very elegant, the prices this year
and last year are WAY TOO MUCH..its supposed to be partially subsidized by the
club for club members  And $50 for non members??  A guy can get in and out
of some of the fanciest restaurants .. you can get a pretty good rib eye for
$50...
not catfish and dry chicken..

Subject: [BVARC] BVARC Awards Banquet - Update I want to let everyone know that
even though it was a great effort, we did not meet the minimum for the caterer
for the BVARC Awards Banquet. So at this time the banquet on the 18th is
cancelled. For those members that paid via PayPal, their money will be
refunded. Those that paid by check, the check will be mailed back to you. If
you have not received your refund by the end of January, please send me an
e-mail at n5...@att.net
It is unfortunate about the cancellation but the banquet is not going away.
Over the next few days a survey will be e-mailed to all members to see just
what everyone would like to do for an awards banquet. The survey will only a
few questions:
1. Would you like to have the banquet at a restaurant or have it catered?2.
What type of food would you like to have?3. What day of the week would you like
the banquet held?4. What kind of price range would be acceptable for you for
the banquet - $15 to $20, $20 to $25, $25 to $30 or $30 to $35?
Hopefully we can get enough responses in over the next few weeks so a new
banquet can be held sometime in the last half of March.
When you get the survey, please consider your answers carefully and
constructively. Club members input is what keeps the club going.

My name is Eric Lieb I am the Cubmaster for Pack 806 in Houston. I have several
scout families that expressed interest in participating in the global Jamboree

already has plans to participate that I can send our scout families too,
ideally on Sunday October 22nd.
Please let me know if BVARC or another radio group in Houston has organized
plans.
Thank you,

P.S. Depending on your memory some might remember me.  I was a member of the
club a long time ago when I first earned my Technican license (KF5GWY).  I made
my first contact with a club member on  the BVARC repeater when i got my shiny
new kenwood th f6a radio. I don't do much ham work these days ( too many other

I went to last month's Brew's with BVARC event as my first intro event to the club. Seemed like a fun way to get to know some folks and have a good time. And it was exactly that. I loved getting to hang with club members and the offerings at the bar. I'm a bit confused from some of the correspondence here. Has anything actually happened that was a problem at these events or is this a lot of speculation about issues that *could* happen? I don't much patience for the latter. If it's the former, it's fair to discuss how to address the issue. If something happened that evening, it must have happened while I wasn't looking or after I left.I expect club members to be adults. I expect people to make their own decisions. I also am quite aware that sometimes people have difficulties with addiction and specific substances. We're a very large club. That leaves room for diversity of events. It also means we're more likely to have some members who aren't a good fit for events. But if we actually come across a member we discover is behaving irresponsibly at these get-togethers, I do expect those running them to intervene. Worrying about whose legal responsibility it is comes as a secondary concern (though still a concern!): I expect the event runners to address behavior problems and let people who can't behave themselves know they aren't allowed back.I'm telling everyone here as a new club member I found the event fun, I saw no irresponsible behavior and I had a great time meeting people and putting some faces to callsigns. I suggest anyone who doesn't like events at bars not come, and if they have particular concern about a members welfare if they were to attend, to let the event runner know about it. From there, we can judge actions. If anyone had a specific incident at the event that they felt was handled poorly and not addressed, I think that's important to bring up here. I am a Past Grand Knight and former District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus and our council 6950 served beer for the Rice Harvest Festival. Because our council was engaged in serving alcohol we had the responsibility to not serve patrons past the legal limit and were trained how to spot when someone was intoxicated. That being said, the Brews with BVARC event, although a gathering of members at an establishment that serves alcohol, is in no way the same as our club serving alcohol to members or the general public. I believe the club having a Brews with BVARC event in many ways is no different than any of the other membership gatherings; afterall it is about comradery. I have not read the clubs bylaws but if there was something governing this sort of gathering it would be found in the bylaws.

TABC clarifies that The restaurant/bar with TABC licenses that sells and serves alcohol to an intoxicated patron is responsible.
I hope this helps.

You guys are finally paying attention!!  I enjoyed  the BwBvarc the couple of
times I went (fellowship), even though I am not a drinker...

I complained when we started advertising it on the website as a BVARC
sanctioned event...
Being that we have always tried to put forward a welcoming face and tried to
attract youngfolks and even children and parents to our club...
No one paid any attention to me back then.
PLUS, I am sure some of our members have or have had problems with
boozeSome have had DUIs, some are recovering...!
Some of you know my son,he has been a ham (since 10 years old) and is now
43yrs.. He has been an addictfor many years..  Although I like to share with
him ham radio things, like the hamfest  and so on.I would be afraid to even
mention BwBVARC to him.
I didn't go, but someone mentioned to me that the LAST BwBVARC had CBD
beerswhich were noted with warnings that they could affect the outcome of a
drug test.
Glad you guys are finally paying attention!!

   Philippe,
Thank you I had no idea this was a concern for some. A few years back I was
required to be certified with TABC for the The Katy Rice Harvest Festival. I am
a Past Grand Knight and former District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus and
our council 6950 served beer for the Rice Harvest Festival. Because our council
was engaged in serving alcohol we had the responsibility to not serve patrons
past the legal limit and were trained how to spot when someone was intoxicated.
That being said, the Brews with BVARC event, although a gathering of members at
an establishment that serves alcohol, is in no way the same as our club serving
alcohol to members or the general public. I believe the club having a Brews
with BVARC event in many ways is no different than any of the other membership
gatherings; afterall it is about comradery. I have not read the clubs bylaws
but if there was something governing this sort of gathering it would be found
in the bylaws.

In the past few weeks, I heard some members talk about the legal aspect of
having events at the bar/brewery serving alcohol under the BVARC umbrella.
Because of the nature of my job, working in the restaurant/Hotel industry, I
have some contacts at TABC and ask who will be responsible if some members get
intoxicated during a club event at the restaurant or bar. TABC clarifies that
The restaurant/bar with TABC licenses that sells and serves alcohol to an
intoxicated patron is responsible.

I hope this helps.

I hope you have a great week.

Hello everyone!

This is another reminder of our Brews with BVARC event coming up this Tuesday
October 10th at 6:30pm. We will be at Holler Brewing Company in Houston. Please
come out if you can. There's always great conversation and camaraderie out at
these events, and we hope you can join us this time around. Give us a call on

trouble finding our table.

Please check out their website (Hollerbeer.com) to see their selection of beers

Quick Update……

After several weeks of flight from the BVARC Field Day site, it appears we
haven’t heard from the balloon in over a week now, so it’s probably down for
the count.

It was certainly a very interesting flight with all the backwards trips it was
making.

As we close the books on this one, we are already testing more trackers as I
type, as well as testing a NEW tracking/reporting application script for
extracting and propagating the information into all the formal reporting sites.

So much more to come. Below is a snapshot of the full flight.

Many thanks for allowing the South Texas Balloon Launch Team participate in
Field Day with you guys.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

[BVARC] BVARC Silent Key

Subject: Message to Eddie Runner, RE: BVARC Silent Key

Hello Mr. Runner,

I sent you a message on Facebook via the BVARC page, but am not sure if you
check messages there.

My name is Nell Lukosavich and I live here in Houston. I am writing you
regarding my dear friend, mentor, and neighbor Charlie Prochaska, who recently
passed away on June 29.

Charlie was a lifetime member of BVARC (KG5KV, previous call sign: KB5EQJ,
Licensee ID: L00159491)  and was a passionate Ham radio operator for over 50
years. His Ham radio community was near and dear to him. Charlie accomplished
so many extraordinary things throughout his life through his beloved Ham
network, including volunteering his Ham radio skills at MD Anderson, Ronald
McDonald House Houston, and with the Boy Scouts of America. Additionally,
Charlie connected the remote island of Pitcairn with Ham radio equipment and
emergency service technology, saving the lives of many islanders, who he
remained friends with until his passing.

In addition to letting your group know of his passing, I wanted to find out if
there is a way to honor Charlie with a final sign off on his call sign, and
share a Silent Key with his family. I know it would mean a lot.

Thank you,
Nell Lukosavich

We used the signal strength meter on a mobile rig (icom r7000) and a handheld

Re: [BVARC] BVARC Email Sorting

2023-06-05 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC
 good point Jacob,
Each email is specifically titled with [BVARC] including the brackes...
this is specifically for folks to sort or filter [BVARC] into a folderof its
own..   Most listservers do this...
this way you can go read the bvarc stuff whenyour in the mood andit will not
clutter your inbox..

 Hello Everyone,
Because of the large amount of emails on this reflector, I just wanted to share
how I avoid having my main inbox spammed. The website describes how to do this
in outlook but doing this in gmail is not exactly intuitive. In gmail there is
something called "Labels", labels can essentially be used as folders to sort
certain emails. This allowed me to place all incoming BVARC emails into a
folder separate from my main inbox so I can go back and read at my leisure. ,

Here's how to do it in Gmail:
1: Click the + next to Labels on the right side and name it. I named mine BVARC
2: Next, type BVARC in the main search bar for Gmail and click the Settings
button to the right of the x.
3: Next, click Create Filter at the bottom.
4: Next, check "Apply to the label:" and select the label you created in step
1. And if you want to keep the emails out of your main inbox, check "Skip the
Inbox (Archive it)". This will place the emails into the label folder but hide
them in your main inbox. Then click "Create Filter"

All emails containing "BVARC" will now go to the label (folder) instead of your
main inbox. When a new email comes in, you'll see a notification next to the
label.

Hope this helps somebody.

You are correct Rick.Mike (n5vcx) and I discussed exactly the things you bring
up when we realizedthe low turnout of the meeting..    So, I realize much of
that failure falls on my shoulders...
So when I used the term WANKERS... I have to include myself...  ha ha(some

food being served at the meeting.   The newsletter had one minor comment in the
Prez column about it.   No other notice of food being served in the newsletter.
The nets I listened to said nothing about food either.

[BVARC] Thursday BVARC meeting I am pissed...

2023-04-13 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC
it was a great meeting tonight at the firehouse,Terry had a great presentation
on HOA antennas and I was RIVETED...!!
I am pissed that MOST of you that did not bother to show up
The club bought A LOT of foodThe kitchen crew worked their butts off for
two days preparing food for the club meeting...
The club is sitting at 334 members and only a pitiful 13 of you wankers showed
up for the meeting
Yeah yeah, there were a few that checked in on zoom.
But how the hell does that help show any appreciation to the kitchen crew
???
Dang it as much work as folks put into this club, we could us a little
appreciation by actuallyshowing up to a friggin meeting...!
Please do not bother telling me your excuses, I was tired and almost did not go
to the meeting myself..
I'm not pissed at you individually, I am pissed at the club in general...
and you are all a part of it...
how do we fix this?

Re: [BVARC] Fox hunt?

2023-03-07 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC
Back, back, back way way back, BVARC sponsored a saturday fox hunt once in a
while..
At all the Houston hamfest there is always a fox hunt...
but your right once a year at the hamfest might not be enough...
Now that my responsibilities from managing the past hamfest have simmered down
I might be interested in putting together a small team of folks toput on
foxhunts once in a while...
Maybe at a park during pota so we can be with all our pota friends Or at any
BVARC event really...

[BVARC] Greater Houston Hamfest fun see you next year

2023-03-06 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC

Greater Houston HamFest is over
Next one is March 1st and 2nd 2024

WOW!
I’m not the only one that gave that as a description!

It was hard work, both physically, and emotionally. A lot of passionate
planning  from many folks that really care for the last 6 months. There were
some veteran planners among us And a lot of new hams working with us  that had
never been to a hamfest at all.  This gave us a huge range of new ideas and
talent.

Some of us knew we could easily do a hamfest because we have done it 19 times
before, “lets just do what we have always done”,  but a few of us wanted to see
it grow and improve. A few of us were very concerned about the budget, ALL of
us knew  it would be taking a big chance expanding the budget to do a TWO DAY
SHOW.
Will anyone even come on a Friday?

Setup on Thursday was tough, but thanks to Mr. Washington and his Grandson for
setting up all the tables and chairs. We had a good amount of volunteers to
help on Thursday, mostly BVARC members, one notable volunteer who is not a
BVARC member who was there all three days ALL DAY is Chuck Hale – KF5UXP
(trying to talk him into joining the club) …

Ham Radio Outlet (HRO) came in for setup on Thursday with a huge retail
display, and they thrilled the Houston airwaves by checking into our Stir Crazy
Net as they drove to the hamfest. Wow, what a great retailer and supporter of
our hamfest.

Friday we were there early to allow more vendors to claim tables and start
setting up. (it was a sellout (plus))

It was busy for me, looking up tables and walking folks to the tables (lots of
walking) verifying they are no the right tables and happy..  thanks to Scott
McKee – NT5SM and a couple of others for helping me with the paperwork.

We had an onsite Paramedic for your safety, BVARC Member David Stevens – KI5LDZ
– He was also a big help with other volunteer duties when he was not saving
lives..

Opening to the public at 2PM, we had a couple of early gate crashers I had to
throw out. Yeah you know who you are…  ha ha

We were fully booked and the folks started streaming in, the crowd got huge..
Wow, on a Friday?  yes!..
At least as big or bigger than our past hamfests, as I was squeezing through
the isles at one point it suddenly hit me, WOW, this is Friday, and the big day
Saturday isn’t even here yet…wow

The show ran till 8pm,  a lot of folks were clearing out by 6:30-7ish, around
8pm Walter (K5WH) and a group of Balloon guys were the only ones left… Planning
for an 8pm close was probably too late..  Lesson learned for next years show.

Saturday morning at sunup the tailgaters were already swarming, and our doors
opened at 8AM..  A few VENDORS showed up for a table they should have claimed
already (Friday and Saturday)
It is a sell out! Where were you Friday? We counted you as a NO SHOW!
Sorry I sold your Tables to someone else!
NO REFUNDS…
I was just being mean to drive home the point that we are a two day show, we
need vendors here for two days!!
but of course I am not really mean,
I was prepared to set up some new tables and I did have a place for them ..
(being mean for minute was part of my plan)
Initial vendor reaction was RAGE (wanting to beat me up).. ha ha
When I told them I was joking, I do have a table for you!!
I think I actually made a few new friends out of this crazy plan.

The Doors opened and wow, another huge huge crowd of people, by noon even the
food vendor was overwhelmed with a line of maybe 50 folks(?) waiting on burgers
..
it was difficult to to even squeeze down the isles..

Thanks to many companies (list on the houstonhamfest.org website) we had NINTY
SIX, count em, NINTY SIX donated door prizes PLUS three MAJOR RAFFLE  prizes (I
heard between $7000 and $8000 total) ..  With that many prizes to try to give
away, we almost didn’t have enough time (in two days!!).
What in the past had been a prize an hour, or a prize every half hour, BUT this
year it become our announcer’s main job  we had constant door prizes..

After recently traveling a couple hundred miles to a hamfest ( I won’t mention
which one) I was disappointed to find out they BAN ALL DOGS except service
dogs.. I brought my two Boxers and my wife stayed in outside with the dogs
while I walked through the show in 20 minutes)
As a joke – (sortof) In some of our early hamfest website blurbs, and on at
least one of our marketing hamfest emails, I mentioned ALL DOGS ARE WELCOME,
just bring your human…
It worked I think over both days we had more then 10 folks with dogs.. I meant
to buy some treats but forgive me, next year I will be more prepared.

Tailgate area:
We charged $5 per space this year, and it was very busy.. We even had some on
Friday.. Saturday though the tailgate area was busy and well defined.   One guy
had several spaces and was there all day, in fact he was still out there
selling after the show, in fact he was still out there selling when I finally
left the fairgrounds.. Is he still

Hey Dominic, As CO-Chair of the HamFest let me say we really appreciate your

a huge box of paper maps on the BVARC booth and I still have a bigbox of maps
now thats its over so  you are right, do better next year..
Vendors:When folks buy tables its sometimes hard to know who is a vendor and
who is not.. Of course HRO is a vendor and we had their name and logo plastered
all over the place before the event.
PLEASE SUPPORT THEM OVER THE VENDORS THAT DID NOT SUPPORT US!!!(you know who
they are)
Dominic, (or anyone interested) please consider bringing ideas and or
critisizmto myself or better yet to the hamfest planning meetings for NEXT
YEARS SHOW!!!Why not join us ? it is a huge satisfaction to put on a good
show..next year is 21 years!!!

Better on site signage.
Better on site maps,

[BVARC] Badges - Ham Radio

2023-02-27 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC

If  you do not already have your ham radio callsign badge, the best badge maker
I know of will be at the Greater Houston HamFestthis weekend..
The Signman can make your badge for you, while you browse the hamfest,The
Signman does have the BVARC logo as well as ARRL and even POTAlogos for your
badge...
Badges wear out as well., I buy all my badges from the Signman..
He also does coffee cups with logos and call signs...

Regarding Zoom, yes, there are many people that don't do Zoom.  That's the
beauty of amateur radio that there are many facits of the hobby and many ways
of achieving the same objective.  Be advised that Zoom has apparently evolved
in some instances to be a form Social Media but primarily remains simply an
electronic way of having meetings for people that can't realistically meet at
the same location and time.  Fortune 500 companies use it literally thousands
of times a day.  Many of those companies ban traditionally Social Media sites
such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. on their networks.
Regarding using Zoom or the meetings as an only channel of recruitment of
volunteers, I made it clear that tonight's Zoom meeting is not a recruiting
session.
Volunteers are not "denied the opportunity" to participate in that members and
others are recruited mostly one-on-one, as I had done with you and others to
assist at the Equipment Check Table.  Other opportunities and ways are in
groups, discussions at personal encounters, at events, nets, general repeater
chit-chat and of course for those that wish to initiate action, there is a lot
at the Hamfest Website itself which has a special page dedicated to Volunteers.
Even that is not enough however, so any other suggestions are always welcome.
I look forward to seeing you again at a Wednesday Lunch Bunch, Saturday Morning
Breakfast, hopefully the banquet, at the February General Membership Meeting
and of course at the Hamfest.

volunteers, I made it clear that tonight's Zoom meeting is not a recruiting
Tnx es 73de John, K5IZO

As per precedent, because of the banquet, there will be no General Membership
Meeting this month (would have been tonight).  Therefore, how about
participating in the Hamfest Zoom meeting tonight.  No, it's not a recruiting
session, but any volunteers will be heard.  Since you received this e-mail, you
are on the BVARC Reflector, so you received the Zoom invite last Thursday,
January 5.

Hello everyone!
This is a reminder that we will be having a social gathering I'm calling "Brews
with BVARC" tomorrow, Tuesday January 10th, at 6:30pm. This will be our very
first meeting, and the location will be changing monthly. This time we will be
meeting at Saint Arnold Brewing Company, 2000 Lyons Ave, in Houston. This is
just a social event, similar to the weekly breakfast. You need only bring
yourself and maybe some money if you're getting drinks or food. With that said
I will more than likely have a radio or two and you're welcome to do so as
well. I don't know how much use they'll get, but we won't know until we try.
We announced this get-together via the nets and on the BVARC website. In the
future I will be sending out emails about 2 weeks ahead via the BVARC
reflector. If you cannot make it, we will be meeting again every month this
year. We will tentatively have our next event on Tuesday February 7th at
6:30pm. Please keep an eye out for the confirmed date and location for
February's "Brews with BVARC" meeting. The location for February is currently
undecided upon, so if you have any brewery recommendations, please send them to
me directly.
I hope to see you there!
