  3. Ham Radio Deluxe $100
  4. Others ??

As a minimum – would like the software to program / backup settings of the

Hey everyone,

I know this is not radio related, but I am in desperate need of help.

I rescued a stray dog in my neighborhood almost 3 weeks ago. He had been
reported on next door for almost 2 weeks prior to me grabbing him. The only
reason I grabbed him is because he almost got run over in front of my house
while I was mowing.

Before anyone asks, yes I have reached out to the shelters and the rescue
groups all over Texas. No one is taking in any dogs. I also had him checked for
a micro chip, no luck.

He knows sit, rides well in a car, and is potty trained. So I am thinking he
was someone's pet before getting dumped.

He is about 40 pounds and still very much a puppy. NO apartments, only houses
with a decent yard or property.

If you are seriously interested in a new dog, please let me know. He is FREE to
a good home. I have been given a crate, it goes with him.

Thanks for reaching out. The BVARC reflector is a great resource for asking

interested in getting involved and thank you so much for joining BVARC!
Congratulations on your General License as well.

So as far as getting on the air, if you haven't already done so, I highly
recommend adding the 146.940MHz repeater (offset is -600 kHz and CTCSS tone is
167.9 Hz) to your radio. If you're having trouble with that, please give me a
call at my number below. I can meet with you sometime this week to get you
squared away on operating your radios. Also (if you have time) we will be
having an event at Brazos Bend State Park on Sunday 10/23/22 which you are
absolutely welcome to attend, and I or other folks in the group can give you
some hands-on assistance with your rado there as well.

A good resource to find repeaters to program in your radio would be
RepeaterBook.com. I'm sure you've taken a look at
YouTube as well, but it's always a good spot to check for detailed information.
We have a few other organizations you may want to look into here in the area,
and that is ARES District 14 and District 1 (depending
on your location). There are many public service opportunities that are
publicized by that group and BVARC (e.g. Bike rides, the Wings Over Houston
Airshow, the Houston Marathon etc.)

There are many nets on the 146.940MHz repeater, including the BVARC Stir-Crazy
net weekdays at noon till we finish (usually around 1pm), we have the Monday
Night net at 8pm, the local traffic net on Mondays at 6:30pm, Tuesdays at 7pm
we have the QuestionAir net, and on some Wednesdays we have the ARES D14 SW
Unit net at 8pm.

Like I said, give me a call and I can make time to meet with you about your
radio and getting on the air. I wish you the best of luck in your ham radio
endeavors and as we say, 73!

contacts and how to use my radios.

Dr. Pat connected to a BVARC net back in August and I made a contact with the

contact with WX5KR.) That night I joined BVARC. I also recently joined the UH

advice on how to learn to use my 2 radios. As a teacher and a graduate student,
I don't have a lot of time to attend meetings but I want to get involved in the
community at large.

The DMR handset is a TYT model MD-UV390 with a code plug from 2018. The handy
talkie is TYT model TH-UV88.

I am a technically competent person with a lot of knowledge about the physics
of radio waves and lots of "computery" skills but I can't even figure out how
to change frequencies on the TYT handy talkie. I can muddle through on the DMR
handset but again, using the interface on the unit makes me feel clumsy and
frustrated.

I am looking for some good resources on learning HAM stuff so I can become a
competent user of my equipment and can make contacts. I'd like to get a home or

Hello everyone!

As you are all likely aware, Field Day is just around the corner! Taking place

forces for ARRL Field Day 2022. We will be operating as many as 10 stations
simultaneously, calling CQ, and racking up contacts. Our goal is to provide a
fun and engaging environment for hams of all classes and those without a
license to experience various aspects of the exciting hobby of ham radio! There
will be food and refreshments as well.

We are looking for operators (THAT'S YOU) to run our stations and help out with
various Bonus Point activities this year. We need many more voice (SSB)
operators, but also CW and FT8 operators. Technician class operators CAN run
our HF stations using the club call sign, and we will have help there to get
you going calling CQ. We are trying to get as many points as possible, and WE
NEED YOUR HELP! We would like to get as much coverage of our event as possible
and are seeking anyone with connections to news media to contact us.

A Few of the Roles Needed:

  * Voice mode operators (i.e., Single Sideband) to call CQ and log contacts
  * Educators (folks willing to teach one or more short structured lessons on
ham radio skills)
  * An operator(s) to run the GOTA (Get On The Air) station to advise the new
or unlicensed operators with the equipment there
  * Social Media promoters (utilize social media to promote the event and
post about the activities during the event)
  * Experienced hams to assist new hams or unlicensed operators using the
equipment at the main stations
  * Help setting up equipment (radios, antennas, cabling, etc.) on Friday
June 24th starting at noon
  *   and many more!

We will be announcing an online sign-up sheet for these roles and operating
positions soon; keep an eye out for the email or check on

Hello everyone!

As you are all likely aware, Field Day is just around the corner! Taking place
at Duhacsek Park on June 25th-26th, BVARC, KARS, and TDXS will be joining
forces for ARRL Field Day 2022.

  *   and many more!

We will be announcing an online sign-up sheet for these roles and operating
positions soon; keep an eye out for the email or check on
BVARC.org in the coming days for a link.

If you have any questions or concerns send them directly to Anthony Morones
(W5LIC) at w5li...@gmail.com, or Mike Hardwick
(N5VCX) at n5...@att.net.

Let's get out there and GET ON THE AIR to represent Houston area hams this
Field Day 2022. We can't wait to see you all out there, 73!

The Fan Dipole antenna, is a High Frequency (HF) antenna designed to provide a
field- tunable resonant portable antenna for two of the most popular amateur
radio bands. This antenna will provide long-range communication on both the 7
and 14 MHz (40 and 20m) bands utilizing skywave propagation and short-range
communication using Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) propagation. Due to
the antenna’s small size and rugged construction, it is ideal for temporary
setup at a campsite or emergency shelter and durable enough for semi-permanent
installation at a base station - even RV sites or dense suburban housing with
small yards should be able to accommodate this antenna. Without an antenna
tuner, the Fan Dipole can operate on the 40 and 20m amateur radio bands. A
wide-range antenna tuner will also enable operation on the 17, 15, 12, and 10m
bands.

Specifications:

Frequency: 40M - 20M (NO TUNER) 17M, 15M, 12M & 10M with a wide-range antenna
tuner.

Power: 500W SSB or 250W CW

Length: 33’ per leg for 40M and 17' per leg for 20M of Tinned Copper KEVLAR
PTFE (Teflon) (-70°C to 150°C) wire

Weight: 2.2 Lb.

The antenna system consists of:

1 X BALUN 1:1

2 X 33' Tinned Copper KEVLAR Wire (7 MHz)

2 X 17' Tinned Copper KEVLAR Wire (14 MHz)

This product is blemished. Blemishes may include:

doesn't mind a slight imperfection. We do not accept returns on blemished
products.

I'd strongly suggest staying away from a single band radio. Many good
used 10-160m +6m 100W radios out there in the $300-$700 dollar range
Watch for something like a Yaesu FT-450 or ICOM 706MKIIG on the used market

Electronic Design just offered a nice 39 page e-book about Impedance Matching.
I know I have sent this out before, but, IMHO, worth a repeat.

To find it
just Google --electronic design library impedance matching--

This will give you a link to part 1 PDF -- click. Then click Series: Impedance
Matching. Next page click Download the "Back to Basics: Impedance Matching
eBook" , but scroll down for the
complete e-book link or the individual article PDF's.

If the computer is of recent manufacture, you will need the right tools to
crack the laptop case open. They are made
so that upgrading can be a bear. I have obtained the tools so I can do the

want $60 to $80 for the job with the customer supplying the RAM.

Digikey is another option. Also, if you have time you can find it on AliExpress
and wait until you receive it in about a month. Of course you have to roll the
dice on the genuinity of the component :) However if you find a decent seller,
it is a good way to supply parts in quantity.

Hope this helps.

Icom iC-2730A is a dual-band mobile that has all that except 6 meters.
It has dual VFO's and can easily do satellite. With a software modification, it
is capable of cross-band-repeat. It is fairly reasonably priced. The control
head
cannot be attached to the main body of the radio however. Mounting
brackets are extra.

these days.
Perhaps someone could tell me what radios can fulfill the following
criteria:

1. Mobile 40-50 watts
2. dual/tri band, 2m and 70cm at least
3. monitor 2 channels or frequencies at once and show both on the display
4. body mounts in trunk, display and mic on/in the dash

Thank you for your assistance,

Mike

I think it would also model as a sleeve antenna. That would make the EZNEC

EZNEC model, but working it thru the gray matter.

Case: Take a 1/2 wl dipole antenna -- center fed. Each side is made up of
multiple, equal length wires that are each insulated, parallel, and closely
spaced. The wires are connected/common at the center feed point, but open
at the far end.

If, at this length, each wire's material DC resistance is 5 ohmsdoes
using multiple wires in parallel, as described above, 1) lower the total RF
material resistance, as resistors in parallelor 2) does it stay the
same or 3) does it become additive?

Any comments would be appreciated. I've got my hypothesis, but wishing
additional input.

FT8. But this question totally is befuddling to me as it doesn't say what's
the problem. Maybe I can say one or two things that are helpful.

Here's an RS232/USB cable for $9 from
Amazon.
It has a male DB9 plug on one end and a USB connector on the other. If your
radio has a female DB9 port, then you're good, otherwise buy a DB9 gender
changer. Googling about the FT450, it says the RS232 Port on the radio is male
also, so you'll need a female/female DB9 gender changer... like this gender
change for $5 on
Amazon.

Then you'll need to install the driver software. This can all get confusing
with the fact that the computer will see this interface as a serial COM port,
so you need to set up the right COM port after you plug in the cable to your
USB on the computer. Or maybe you got a disc with the radio and it has all the
software needed?

And reading further about the FT450 this Yaesu radio actually labels the
DB9 port "CAT". Huh? Can anybody explain what CAT stands for where it applies
to an RS232 serial communications port? AFAIK the term CAT is about a cable of
multi twisted pair. In other words CAT cable is like saying COAX cable -- it's
not about the signals going through it or what its used for, it is about the
physical conductor construction of the cable itself. Or is this something
merely lost in the Japanese/USA translation and now we have this confusing term
CAT being misapplied. Is it a misnomer?

Or have I been Rip Van Winkle and this word CAT is now standard and has a
reasonable place in the vernacular, in application to what this is used for?

However that still did not work. I plugged the cable into the USB port and

Attached is the updated bonus point list. As you will see, all categories have
been assigned, with the exception of the young operator bonus. That one will
need to be on the fly during the event.

Fellow Quad Club Mega Field Day Participants,

Field Day is a little over 1 week away. Most of the logistics have been
accounted for, but one important category remains incomplete. The Field Day
rules list a number of bonus activities which provide the opportunity to add
thousands of points to our Field Day score. Many of these activities have been
assigned, but some important ones remain. For example, 1 satellite QSO is worth
100 points. That is equivalent to 50 SSB QSOs in our class! I’ve attached an
excerpt from the Field Day rules with the unassigned activities highlighted in
red (the green ones are already taken).

Please review this list and volunteer to fulfill one of these task. Not only
will you be helping us to achieve a great contest score, but you will be
helping to demonstrate our engagement with the community, as well as our
capability to function in an emergency situation.

Arthur Collins was very important. In WWII the boys in the planes had a

Re: [BVARC] Anyone have equipment to check a computer sound card

2019-04-02 Thread Travis Burgess via BVARC
You should be able to add (plugin on the motherboard) a dedicated sound card to
your computer.
Tell the folks at Microcenter what computer you have and ask for a basic but
good quality sound card.
Lots of information on how to install it available. Just be sure to ground the
computer before you
open it up and ground yourself before you touch anything inside it. Static is
just as unhealthy for computers
as it is for radios.

Headphones do not produce sound. Have done all tests with speakers and drivers
etc but never was able to get sound to work. I am currently using an external
USB sound card but I really need to free up. Honestly I have done all I can. I
need someone who could investigate. I can take it to the computer repair shop
and pay $50 to $100 to get it fixed or I can buy a refurbished dell 660
Inspiron for $150 to $200 but then you have the issue of copying everything
from one computer to the other and having to redo tqsl and lotw etc so I think
my best option might be the repair, I have run at least a dozen troubleshooting
tests. I am not experienced enough to work on testing a sound card that is
embedded in the mother board. The other issue is that the dxpeditions are
running Fox and hound mode and it requires a cat cable. I have one but can’t
use with an external sound card plugged into the USB port. So basically it
means unless I get the internal sound to work I will not be able to work any dx
stations on ft8 and jt65 without being able to use that cat cable. That’s about
it thanks

My name is Ray. I was born with a congenital heart defect and had open heart
surgery at just 8 weeks old. I was later diagnosed with a global developmental
delay and an ultra rare gene mutation ADCY5.

This causes me to have a range of unpredictable movements that are painful,
forceful and make my body contort in unnatural positions. They affect my entire
body, even my larynx and my tongue!

It affects me 24 hours a day; during the daytime it restricts my mobility and
the ability to perform simple tasks like other children. My night times are the
worst as this is when I have my most painful movements and I am yet to
experience a full nights sleep.

Doctors in the United State have tried lots of different drugs and tests to
help me but so far nothing has worked. My mum and dad have found a specialist
doctor in UK who has developed a non invasive technique in Neuroplasticity and
he thinks he has a strong chance of reducing the frequency and intensity of my
movements, ultimately with the outcome of giving me more independence and a
better quality of life.

My bedroom at home is fully padded to protect me from injury but when I go away
to UK I can not take my bedroom with me. I therefore need a specialist travel
bed to keep me safe at night.
As always, any specialist equipment is very expensive to buy. My family have
already come together to fund the trip but we still can't afford the travel bed.

Your gift, no matter how small, will help enable me to stay safe at night
whilst I'm in UK. Moving forward it will also mean I can stay over in hospital
when I need treatments and go away on family holidays like my friends do.

My mummy, daddy and i can't thank you enough for taking the time to read my
story and any donations given will be gratefully received.

[BVARC] Regarding Supply Voltage

Re: Adjusting Output Power with JIG in Hidden Menu
From: jose maria
trueba
Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2018 01:17:58 PST

Exactly, and consistent with what Mike just wrote and many other hams found,
same as my own tests. Mike could not write clearer. Any low power complaint is
related with low voltage arriving inside the radio when many amperes try to
flow from power supply towards the final transistors. Wattmeters either
internal or external are not the problem, some cannot measure PEP and none are
accurate enough compared with the measuring systems available at the
manufacturer calibration laboratory, but meters are not our problem. Getting
200w from a 200w radio is easy because the radio was designed, built and
calibrated to make the job. We can be sure that no low output problem is
because the factory did the wrong calibration. We better get good cables, good
fuse holder, and set our decent enough power supply to the highest voltage we
can set, although under the maximum allowed which is 15,89 or 13.8+15%, do not
forget that around 14.4V is normally the voltage of any 12V automobile when the
engine is on. We should forget the old 13.8 number, the 12V nominal battery
voltage, and set our power supply to at least 14,5 Volts. Power depends on
voltage squared, so small changes in voltage affect highly the power. The
higher the voltage arriving at the final transistors the higher the maximum
output power will be, and the cleanest our signal will be for any power level
we put out. Please do not ruin factory settings instead, only to splatter other
hams. You do not like splatters nor do I. Please... Be a good neighbor!

Wow, you sound like the technicians are invading "your" territory. You also
sound like you have a problem with those who got their start in the CB bands
over 30 years ago, like me. If the FCC makes this change then those bands would
no longer be just "general band" anymore. I'm just a "TECHNICIAN" and have been
for almost two years and can say that the changes will not stop me from getting
my general but will get me experience in the bands before I leap off into the
fray. I don't think it will cause any more problems than all ready exists.
Enforcement of current rules is what is needed, not holding operators back
because a few have no respect for the rules.. If you want amateur radio to grow
and not continue it's decline among younger operators then more operators need
to get with the program and welcome changes that hopefully will do just that.
It's not your bands, it's our bands and I respectfully disagree with your
statement.

Does anyone know where I can buy 50+ feet of ANY ladder-line in town today? I
need it by tomorrow. Do you have any laying around you will sell me? I don't
care if it is 300, 450 or other ohm ladder-line. It doesn't have to be new. I
just checked EPO and they don't sell it. Otherwise I delay my project almost 2

Test gear for the shack

Even if you don't build radio gear, test equipment has a wide variety of uses
in the shack. Here at SOTABEAMS we have a fully equipped lab with all the test
gear you could ask for but the most used bit of gear is our
LCR45
meter. This inexpensive unit measures resistance, capacitance and inductance.
We use it for checking feeder cables (50 Ohm cable has a capacitance of 100pF/m
so we can use an LCR meter to check feeder lengths. Three years ago we used to
stock a small range of test gear from local company Peak Electronics, now that
we have moved and have more shelf space, we have started stocking this great
gear again.

We are stocking these handy items:

  *
LCR45
an automatic meter for measuring inductance, capacitance and resistance..

Well, I did it again! I let Windows do an update BEFORE the contest (I knew it
was a bad idea) and now it once again does not recognize my video card and has
reduced the resolution and will not span across two monitors. Last time this
happened, K5LJ suggested I roll back the video driver and that worked, but this
time the option to do that is grayed out. Surely, someone know how to fix this
for me.

The computer is an older HP running WIN 10 (upgraded for WIN 7) with an AMD
chipset and an ATI Radeon HD 4200 video card. I have a new computer purchased,
but it’s still in the box…. There must be a way! If you have the answer, call,
email or text me!

BTW, the ARRL 10 Meter contest conditions suck, but there are occasional
contacts to be made.

People hire lawyers every day for representation in accidents like this. Since
I am actually a lawyer, I tend to agree with the earlier comment that it may be
hard to find one in this case, given that the 20 year old defendant would not
seem to have much money. But your admonition that KF5LVZ should just “look to
his family for help” strikes me as unduly harsh. The man just asked for a
referral. Lighten up. This is what lawyers do, cases just like this one.

Wow - FTDX-5000 - very generous indeed! Congrats!

But please, don't just flip the switch to see what happens. I know others on
this list will disagree with me (modern transceivers reduce power in the event
of an impedance mismatch to protect finals, e.g.) - but why take the chance
with a VERY expensive rig?

I'm not available this Sunday, but I'd be happy to help when I have time. Many
others on this list would be too, I'm sure.

Cherish the wonderful gift your troop has been given, take your collective
time, and learn how to operate it properly. The time investment will pay off
many times over.

scoutmasters bought an antenna (MFJ1622) and we hope to put it all together and
get on the air this Sunday October 29th at 2pm. None of the licensed hams in
our troop have ever used an HF rig. We will be reviewing our licensing books,
reading some manuals, and then flipping the switch to see what happens.

If you would like to come help us figure things out please let me know. We
could really use some help from a few experienced hams on Sunday.

Feel free to forward this message to others that might want to help, and keep
an ear out for our new club call KG9BSA on Sunday.

Regards,

Eric Lieb (KF5GWY)

[BVARC] Fw: Geomagnetic Storms Likely This Week

2017-10-23 Thread Travis Burgess via BVARC

A large hole in the sun's atmosphere is spewing a stream of solar wind toward
Earth. Polar geomagnetic storms are likely on Oct. 24th and 25th.

GEOMAGNETIC STORMS PREDICTED (G2-CLASS): A large hole has opened in the sun's
atmosphere, and it is spewing a stream of solar wind toward Earth. Estimated
time of arrival: Oct. 24th. First contact with the gaseous material is expected
to produce minor G1-class geomagnetic storms, intensifying to moderately strong
G2-class storms on Oct. 25th as Earth moves deeper into the stream. Arctic sky
watchers can expect to witness bright auroras. The lights could descend to
lower latitudes as well, with sightings in northern-tier US states along a line
from Maine to Washington. Visit

And on a separate note, regarding a handi-talkie- there are a few folks parting
with the Kenwood D72a because they are looking for D-Star from the newer radio.
If you want

that capability, there are some older ones from Icom which were sold in colored
plastic cases- as special event / collector's editions which can sometimes be
found at

reasonable prices. One source for a good used radio is
www.qrz.com ( and I get no financial advantage from saying
this ). I know that this does not exactly answer that

question from the guy who wanted a 2M radio only- yet a 2M/70CM radio may not
cost much more- if pre-owned.

I got an invite after going to verify vet to start purchasing from the exchange
as a beta test before they open it up on nov 11. Just placed my first order and
for giving them my email to receive specials, they gave me a 17% discount off
my first order. Found a few things and XYL has always wanted a smoker. Bought
her one (gotta buy a brisket when it arrives). Bought some maple and hickory
chips with it. On my first order with the discount, saved an extra $45. No tax
and everything will be here in 3-7 days.

About time Vets get a little recognition from the government.

I did the same thing last night and they said they could not find my records.
Went all over there web site and found a chat box and tried to chat with them
and got an automatic message that they could not chat now. They did give me a
1-844-868-8672 and I called it today and got a real
person in Dallas Tx and she got me to the web site to fill out the request to
have my records sent to VetVerify. They said it could take 5 days to get a
notice of sending it to VetVerify. When they get the info they will notify me
to go back to VetVerify and refill out the form. Hope this helps everyone.

Hey Bruce,

That is great news for me and spouse. I tried to register today but the Vet

official Honorable Discharge (suitable for framing) papers. It is crazy, since
I purchased two different homes with my VA benefit.

So now I am going through the inquiry process with VA. I hope this will get

As you know, if you retired from the military, you have access to the Exchanges
and to the online exchanges. The law changes on November 11, 2017, Veterans Day
this year allowing ANY honorable separated veteran the right to purchase from
the exchange.
You need to pre-register.
Go to shopmyexhcnage.com. On the right near the top
is a box Veterans Online Shopping Benefit Take the first step.. Click
on it and it takes you to vetverify.org. That is where
you register. Then on November 11, 2017, you will have access to create an
account at shopmyexchange.com.
I got lucky, someone was looking out for me somewhere. I registered two weeks
ago and the other day, I received an email to create my exchange account and
start shopping now as a Beta test for the exchange. I have been perusing the
goodies and one thing I looked up for my daughter was some Whey. On Amazon, it
was $58 and in the exchange it was $29. Not everything is as deeply discounted.
Also, all purchases are tax free. Anything over $49 is shipped free, under $49
is a flat $4.95. And... they match prices with walmart, target, amazon. What
could be better.
Hope this will help some of you that are vets or have a vet in the family. It
sure put a smile on my face.

MASSIVE EXPLOSION ON THE FARSIDE OF THE SUN: On July 23rd, NASA and European
spacecraft observed a massive explosion on the far side of the sun. A
spectacular CME tore through the sun's atmosphere and it now appears to be en
route to Mars. Earth will not feel the effects of the blast because of its
location on the opposite side of the sun. However, the source of the eruption,
old sunspot AR2665, will turn back toward our planet in early August, possibly
bringing a new round of geomagnetic storms and auroras. Read all about it on
today's edition of
Spaceweather.com.

The “stuff” has been in that garage many years and therefore covered with dust

Why I did this --- a lot of this stuff can be resurrected from the Snow White

replacement, etc. will do it wonders.
Pricing is priced to sell, lower your risk and hopefully cheap enough for you

STRONG SOLAR FLARE AND CME: After days of suspenseful quiet, huge sunspot
AR2665 finally erupted on July 14th (0209 UT), producing a powerful M2-class

SOLAR ACTIVITY INTENSIFIES: Sunspot AR2665, which emerged just as few days ago,

Space Weather News for July 7, 2017

https://www.facebook.com/spaceweatherdotcom

BIG SUNSPOT TURNS TOWARD EARTH: A new and large sunspot is rapidly growing on
the solar disk, temporarily arresting the sun's plunge into Solar Minimum.
Stretching more than 70,000 km from end to end, the active region numbered
AR2665 has more than doubled in size in 24 hours. This makes it an easy target
for backyard solar telescopes. So far the growing sunspot has not produced any
strong flares, but this could change if its rapid growth continues apace and
destabilizes the sunspot's magnetic field. Visit
