mySQL / ODBC / Windows problem

2002-03-27 Thread Neil Clark =TMM=

OK, problem

I am running an app which states it supports mySQL, but I am getting
error on only one page where an update occurs. The code is encrypted so
I cannot see what and where it is at the mo.

I am running :

Windows 2000 Server SP2 [SRP1]
IIS 5
ColdFusion 5 Enterprise Edition
mySQl 3.23.49
myODBC 2.50.39

The makers of the system suggested that I use the Merant Drivers, but I
am on WINDOWS! - I know there are drivers for the Windows system, but I
am unsure on what version to use.

Anyone have experience with this?

Neil

RE: web server for XP home?

2002-03-27 Thread Craig Dudley

What ???

XPHOME is NOT, I repeat, NOT based on Windows98

It is based on the same NT core as XP Pro and Windows 2k before that.

Btw, Apache runs like a DREAM on xp, it's free, easy to set up (if you can
read instructions correctly), it has a smaller memory footprint than IIS and
theoretically is more secure as well, so WHY on earth would you want IIS?

Locale functions and XP

Heres a challenge...

I've used the steps outlined in MM's Technote 22404 to get CF5's lscurrency

to be for W2000 servers only.

Does anyone know how to force CF Server to use the msvcrt.dll in the

As far as I am aware cfexecute only runs on NT and UNIX platforms - whether
that means Linux I dunno - worth a try I guess - you can use the optional
ARGUMENTS syntax to pass command-line arguments to a program, elements of
the ARGUMENTS array is copied into a corresponding array of exec() arguments
on UNIX.

Dunno if this helps...

I think that Scott's simply trying to draw an analogy. XP Home fills the
same niche as Windows 95/98/ME did - a home computer operating system, not
really designed for office use. XP Home apparently doesn't let you join a
domain, which is a pretty big part of office use.

Personally, I need to work against IIS sometimes, which is why I run Windows
2000 Server for development. There are a lot of things in IIS that aren't in
Apache, although for most CF development, Apache will do nicely.

On my personal machine, I haven't found Apache to have a smaller memory
footprint than IIS, either.

RE: CFID/Token/Registry - Easy question

2002-03-27 Thread Tony_Petruzzi

the main reason you don't want to use the registry is because this could
corrupt your registry file. If that happens then server goes bye-bye. But
the most strongest argument is that client variables are used to share CF
information in a clustered environment. If you have several CF servers
clustered together and all of them are storing the client information in
their own registry, then how are is one CF going to get the client
information from another? They can't. Trust, believe me when I tell you,
setup a data source EXCLUSIVELY for you client information and ALWAYS use
it.

What interval should you have your cfadministrator clear out the client
variable entries stored in the system registry for CFID/Token ? Right now
its set to 90 days which seems a bit long, meaning, if I log into the
application again I will be using the existing CFID/Token unless 90 days
pass before next logon. I would think you would want like a 12 hour
setting? That way if a person longs into your application the next day you
will get a new CFID/Token or is it best to have 1 person carrying around
the same CFID/Token indefinitely, assuming they logged in at least 4 times
per year under the 3 month interval?

Thanks for your input

I've got 2000 running on a single PIII 833 MZ processor with 512 MB
RAM. About 15 databases thus far, doing probably twice that many
visitors in a month for the sites using those databases. No problems.

ColdFusion Listener?

2002-03-27 Thread Kris Pilles

I was curious if there is anyway to have a listener of sorts via
coldfusion. I basically want a dynamic form of mine to verify each
field against the server as the user submits the data. I see this done
a lot with applets and with oracle but I haven't seen anything like this
with Coldfusion? Is it possible...if so have an example I can look at?

Thanks

Directory War Stories

2002-03-27 Thread Voris, Jim

I would like to be able to leverage directory services (ldap, e-directory,
active directory, etc) in my cf application.

I'm curious what people have done, page level permissions basis to take
advantage of a directory.

HTML to PDF

2002-03-27 Thread Jille Floridor

Hi list,

anyone got some advice/hints on how to create a pdf from a html/cfm
template? I know there are various custom tags, but the server is running on
RedHat Linux, so that excludes many of them.. I've seen some java based
tags, but none of those did the job properly (adding images seems to be
difficult).

So, any ideas?

Anyone from Orlando not in the CFUG?

2002-03-27 Thread Robert Everland

I am co chair for our ColdFusion User Group here in Orlando, FL and
I just want to make sure that I have everyone in the Orlando area signed up
for our User Group. I am trying to get more user participation so that we
can network and get to know each other. If you're interested in joining us
go to www.cforlando.com and sign up as a member. We have monthly meetings
and we will be starting something new called CF_Beer. We will all meet up
once every couple of weeks for drinks, talking, and getting to know each
other without having to have a formal meeting or speaker. Email me off list
if you have any questions.

As a general follow up to this - anyone NOT in a CFUG is _really_
missing out on a wonderful exprerience. I encourage everyone not
attending a CFUG to go to http://www.macromedia.com/v1/usergroups/ and
see if a UG is in your area.

Then I'd consider this an opportunity. ;) When I was launching the one
here in Virginia, I got a _lot_ of help from Macromedia, and this was
before I worked for the company. If you don't have a CFUG in your area,
simply contact us and we can help you launch it. The person in charge of

RE: Anyone from Orlando not in the CFUG?

2002-03-27 Thread Rick Walters

No really,

Orlando's CFUG really is quite good. I have moved about quite a lot as
a contractor and have seen more than a few alternatives. It is pleasant
to report that Orlando's group remains more interested in coding than
marketing.

While it is important that CFUG's help promote CF as "the" solution of
choice for local business, I think that having a knowegeable and
talented pool of local developers is the best way to increase the use of
Cold Fusion in area businesses. Orlando's group is all about answering
questions and not selling services (like some others I've seen and won't
spotlight).

Oh, don't get me wrong, there are other good groups out there. I just
wanted to chime in and further encourage Orlando Developers to come to
the meetings.

RE: Developers Tool. Comment Engine.

2002-03-27 Thread David Schmidt

Actually, I believe the problem here is that a "-" is interpreted by an
editor (even an email editor like Outlook) as a hyphen just being used to
break up a set of syllables. Perhaps they should think about replacing the
"-" with a "_" when creating UUID's. After all, then you could use them for
directory names, urls, or whatever you wanted.

RE:Increasing wrapping length in Outlook (was: Developers Tool. Comment Engine.)

2002-03-27 Thread Angel Stewart

Just set the length of wrapping in Outlook to more than 80 characters
and you'll be fine when pasting URLS.

Options> Mail Format>Internet Format

And go to Plain text Options and increase from 76 to ...well..whatever
you like. There is an upper limit though.
And it does make your emails look a bit odd.

RE: CFFILE reads whole file into 1 var?

2002-03-27 Thread Tony_Petruzzi

this one of my BIGGEST dislikes about CF. Whenever you read a file, it put
the entire file into a variable. There is no way to "open" and file and read
one line at a time. So if you have a 35 meg file and just want to read the
last line, CF would throw the entire 35 meg file into memory and that could
take a while on your server and bring it down. Hopefully with NEO there will
be away around this with JAVA.

There is a custom (java) tag that reads the file line per line. I don't
remember how the tag is called, but you'd probably find it if you check the

If its somethink like a csv then you can setup a Datasource in CF to
look at the file and then just call the file via CFQuery If it's a
csv then you could use CFX_CSVToQuery tag which will convert the file to
a Query Object...

Failing that Look for a cfx tag or write a COM object to handle the file
so that you know its being processed line by line

Re: CFFILE reads whole file into 1 var?

2002-03-27 Thread Paul Giesenhagen

I may not understand how that works, but I can't see anyway around not
opening the whole file first. How would cold fusion or any other
application be able to find the last line if it didn't open the whole file
first.

I would like to see where you can pass various "delimiters" that would allow
you to quickly see line by line or item by item whatever the case may be.
But however you look at it, you would have to open the whole file to find
parts of it ...

ClusterCats

2002-03-27 Thread dave fauth

If anyone is doing ClusterCats, I have a configuration question that I
can't figure out. I have the IP/DNS information correct and the clustering
works correctly but my NT event logs are filling up with cluster errors
every 30 seconds.

Twice a minute I get an event log telling me this:

Cluster (clustername) SERVER FAILURE: Server (server.domain.name) NOT AVAILABLE

Checking the explorer, everything is fine. Load on the server is within
acceptable limits. The server's performance is fine through my browser. The
explorer displays no errors, but still I get the event log twice a
minute. It happens on both servers.

The machines are NT4sp6 with CF5.0

You can contact me off line if you prefer.

thanks

RE: Anyone from Orlando not in the CFUG?

2002-03-27 Thread Robert Everland

I have learned that in order to make it successful you have to be willing to
do a lot of work yourself. People do not want to spend thier time for free.
The benefit of you doing this though is that you tend to get a good
reputation as long as you try to run the group decently. So even though you
are doing tons of free work, your name is known now in local circlies. At
least I hope that's what it is doing. It's hard work, and I wish I had more
help, but all you need is a website to tell users about the group, a place
for meetings, and then a speaker. After that it's all gravy, all the cfug
groups will help you out. Presentations that are already done, there are
speakers that go to different cfug to tell them about new ideas, products,
and Macromedia send people out all the time.

RE: web server for XP home?

2002-03-27 Thread jon

Yeah... but realistically, how much different is IIS going to behave than
Apache -- especially if you don't have full control over the IIS configs?

I've been running XP HOME on my laptop with apache as a portable development
machine for about 4 months now -- no trouble there whatsoever. I've got that
single user version of CF 5 installed so I can mess about with my code when
I'm not attached to the net and mysql/access to handle DB stuff.

If someone has a clever way to synch databases when I hit the road, that
would be excellent.

At any rate, it all works fine and behaves in a very stable fashion.
Apache/CF seem to play well together and personally, I find apache way
easier to configure than IIS. (All those tabs!!! AGGG!)

Incidentally -- there was an article on the register about turning your XP
Pro machine from a workstation to a server:

Apparently, the two versions of xp aren't as different as people might

Here's a standard routine I use for listing tables and columns. More info
can be found by looking up "information schema views" in SQL books Online.

select * from information_schema.columns
order by table_name, column_name

#table_name#

#column_name# #data_type# #character_maximum_length#

Is it possible to get information about a table via SQL (or some other
method)? I would like to get field names, datatypes/lengths, etc.

I am using MSSQL 2000.

Thanks,

Yeah... but realistically, how much different is IIS going to behave
than Apache -- especially if you don't have full control over the IIS
configs?

I've been running XP HOME on my laptop with apache as a portable
development machine for about 4 months now -- no trouble there
whatsoever. I've got that single user version of CF 5 installed so I can
mess about with my code when I'm not attached to the net and
mysql/access to handle DB stuff.

If someone has a clever way to synch databases when I hit the road, that
would be excellent.

At any rate, it all works fine and behaves in a very stable fashion.

Yes you can. If you build an app for shipment that runs offline as a

custom 404 troubles

2002-03-27 Thread Todd Ashworth

I have a custom 404 template set up. When I go to a bad .html file, the
custom 404 comes up properly. When I go to a bad .cfm it doesn't. I can't
activate the "check that file exists" option, because it screws up one of my
custom tags.

I was thinking about doing a meta refresh to the custom 404 from the
standard CF 404 page. Does anyone know where this file is found? Also, is
there a better way to handle this?

If none of these are close enough to you, as Raymond says, you should
consider it an opportunity and start your own local UG. Check out the

CFFILE READs whole file into 1 var?
Is there a limit on the size of the contents of that file?
Is there an alternative way to read and process one record at a time in the
traditional fashion? I had to parse thru the file looking for CR's and
CFLOOP thru the logic. Seems strange, but if that's the way we
must do it, when in Poughkeepsie, do as the... nevermind... how do

Re: custom 404 troubles

2002-03-27 Thread Chris Norloff

You mean you're using the Missing Template Handler in CF admin? Or are you using
CFERROR type=request?

When you say you go to a bad file, do you mean you enter the name of a file that
doesn't exist?

I use the Missing Template Handler and it works with CFM pages but not HTML pages or
nonsense words. I'd use the web server to handle HTML, since the CF server is not
called unless it's a CFM page.

Neil,

Assuming a default install of mySQL, the log is at

c:\mysql\data\mysql.err

You might ask these guys if they're using CFUPDATE on that query. That

solution was to switch to straight SQL and the problem disappeared.

When you create a new datasource to mySQL, do you have to check any of
the multiple checkboxes?!

You can do this only if the window is a child of another window. If it
is not, then a dialog box will pop up asking the user if he/she wants to

Hi everyone i've come accross a problem

I'm creating dynamic select boxes. i can have none to infinity and so i need
for them to have dynamic names. Because i'm not allowed to have select boxes
with the same name.

but when i post my results i'm having a problem resolving the the name of
the select box.

i thought i had fixed it by sending the recordcount number and looping
through the name. but by doing this it only gives me the name of the select
box not the value.

Does any one know the answer please.

Thank you,

I feel compelled to correct you on this. The first ColdFusion User Group was

Forms: submit via button and required fields not working

2002-03-27 Thread Tim

I have a form that I wanted to restrict so that the user has to hit the Submit button
to enter the form, and not the Enter key. I included the following:

This does work as far as resticting the Enter Key, but the Required attribute does not
work now. The user does not get a message if a required field is left blank, and the
form is acted upon, producing errors. If I take the above code out and insert a plain
submit button, the Required attribute works, but not restricting the Enter key.

Anyone have an idea on how to do both, restrict form submission only when the button
is selected and checking for required fields?

You're using cfform, right? Form.submit() does not drive the form
submission event. What you can do is look at your form page's html
source and find the javascript in the tag that is called when the
form is submitted. Call the same functions in your button tag and it
should work.

FLASH MX AND COLDFUSION MX (formally known as NEO)
-
There is no doubt -- it is a really good time to know ColdFusion. Since
our last newsletter, Macromedia has released the much-anticipated new
release of Flash MX. Macromedia has also released the mention of the
next version of ColdFusion. Previously referred to as the lead
character from the movie the Matrix NEO has been formally announced
as ColdFusion MX.

This is a direct Quote from the March 4th Press Release from Macromedia:

Macromedia ColdFusion MX, which can be
used in conjunction with Microsoft .NET,
Java application servers, and web services,
will provide developers with the fastest and
easiest way to create rich applications with
Macromedia Flash MX. In addition, developers
will be able to use a new server gateway technology
to build Macromedia Flash applications that work
directly with leading application servers and
web services.

http://www.macromedia.com/macromedia/proom/pr/2002/flash_mx_apps.html

What does this mean and why, as ColdFusion developers, are we paying so
much attention to it? Using the new server gateway technology
ColdFusion MX can now be leveraged even more to work with Flash MX
applications.. Ok, its a bit vague, but trust me when I say that the
CFNorth conference will really make it all make sense and will
definitely leave you stunned with the possibilities of what these two
technologies can provide.
~

 EXHIBITORS & Give-A-Ways
---
CFNorth will have over 12 exhibit booths and a tonne of give-aways.
Exhibitor booths are a fantastic way for you to really explore what this
ColdFusion community is made up of. ColdFusion consultants, cool
Developer tools, applications that you can incorporate into your own
products, lead authors of many of the ColdFusion books will all
available for you to interact and talk with.

If you are on the borderline of choosing an application server (such as
ColdFusion) then talking with these people will give you a great
perspective onto what ColdFusion can offer your organization. Its not
just about ColdFusion, remember. ColdFusion is the foundation for a lot
of awesome products and services, and these exhibitors will demonstrate
the real power of what ColdFusion is all about.

If you have been to any of the ColdFusion User Group meetings, you know
we always give away lots of stuff. Well, here is a preview of just some
of the give-a-ways from some of our sponsors, that you could win, just
for coming!

RE: mySQL / ODBC / Windows problem

2002-03-27 Thread Matt Robertson

Neil,

You mean in cf administrator? You can't use CF to create datasources
(so far at least). You have to have admin access to the server and use
the Windows ODBC applet to do that directly -- Programs / Administrative
Tools / Data Sources (ODBC). Then CF will automatically be able to see
the source inside of itself (and that source should be properly
configured by default, unless you want to restrict sql ops via cf for
some reason).

Cheers,

Thanks Matt,

I know it is a problem with the actual SQL as everything else is sweet.
When you create a new datasource to mySQL, do you have to check any of
the multiple checkboxes?!

Dynamic attributes in CF tags?

2002-03-27 Thread Jamie Jackson

Is it possible to dynamically generate attributes in CF tags?

Of course it's possible to dynamically change attribute values:

But, is it possible to dynamically control *inclusion* of the
attribute itself? For instance:

The above doesn't work, and neither does this:
attribute="#myVar#">>

My problem is much more complex, but this is the crux of it.

Thanks,
Jamie

RE: Dynamic attributes in CF tags?

2002-03-27 Thread Raymond Camden

It is, but only for custom tags. To use this feature, you pass a struct
called AttributeCollection. Ie:

Depending on x, you will either have foo or goo passed.
