How do you estimate development time?

2003-01-06 Thread Michael Kear
I have a question that probably gnaws at most development houses at some
stage - what is the process you use to estimate the number of hours
you're going to need to complete a project?

Do you use a method that boils down to we had a similar job to that
last month and that took us 55 hours and this job has that extra tricky
bit so it'll probably take us 58 hours or are you more scientific than
that?

I have to change my methodology for billing my major client from a
hours-worked basis to a job-by-job basis which means I'm going to have
to be more accurate in estimating how much a job is going to cost me.

RE: How do you estimate development time?

2003-01-06 Thread Adam Reynolds
I usually break it down into data objects (tables but sometimes more). You
usually need create, edit, delete forms for each data object, then you need
display screens. Depending on your development method (I'm a fusebox nut) I
usually recommend 3 days for each data object.

This covers any weird shit that happens with the client and gives you a
breather as some objects will be quicker to implement than others. Also
identify all actions you expect to have to perform on an object and increase
cost appropriately.

I would strongly suggest that you exclude requirements/design from your
fixed costing. You will get very badly burnt otherwise. You need to know
what you will be delivering before you commit to a fixed price. Agree with
them that you will do the requirements analysis and design at cost.
Implementation will then be at a fixed price.

It also means if you have to deal with a new concept (say file management)
you can price on a learning curve for yourself. You will get it wrong first
time round or at least it will take you longer to be confident about what
you have done.

I was part of a team that wrote something to this effect. If used cfpop to
query a specific account for mail. Keywords within the subject header would
automatically create an incident in our incident tracking system and allow
assignement to a developer.

It isn't specifically difficult. Your major task is the incident management
system...That is very dependent on your business working processes.

Hi all,

In the midst of working on the ever-expanding improvements to my content
management system, I realized that I was suddenly doing an awful lot of
exceptionally reuseable and generic work with UDF's, in particular involving
javascript interaction. I considered submitting some of these functions to
the Common Function Library (www.cflib.org), and I think I did submit one or
two. Because many of them are interdependant or simply make a lot more sense
in the context of other functions in my library I decided that perhaps a
better idea would be to isolate them into a separate API and present them as
a contiguous, extensible, open-source library management tool, and so I've
spent part of the past week or so doing just that.

This is open-source, so this is not an advertisement. I'm interrested in any
feedback members of the CF community might provide -- suggestions, bug
reports, etc.

Check out the docs and/or download the API at http://www.turnkey.to/tapi

Try un-checking the option Refresh Local Files Automatically. That

 ok,

I have multiple servers that I have to edit content on. They have ICMP
disabled which makes them bloody slow when accessing directly through
\\servername\share. So I map the drives, but thsi is still slow as
dreamweaver wants to scan the contents of all the folders open in the
folder browser every time it get's the focus. So I created sites for
each site, which makes access fast again few!

But now the problem. each time I start Dreamweaver it says it can't
 find
the root of several sites and I have to click through the pop-ups it
gives me. This is because I don't have the drives mapped at all times,
there are just too many drives that way.

So is there an option somewhere I might have missed? Is there a way to
tell DW not to check the root paths of my sites?

 please...

Re: Incoming email manager

2003-01-06 Thread Rizal Firmansyah
David,
i've made a helpdesk/trouble ticketing system like this based on CF.

Basically it scans POP3 account, and check the subject and content of the
email.
If the system founds specific keywords, then the email will be redirected
to agents (cust. support).
My app uses cfschedule for mail retrieval and distribution to agents.
It also supports escalation, and you may define how the escalation process
works easily.
All web based.

If you're interesting to see how my app works, let me know.
I need 3 days to give you a demo.
Well actually i need to find a free CF SQL server that allow cfschedule
and then upload scripts :)

WOT: Tree select like Windows Backup | Restore

2003-01-06 Thread Aidan Whitehall
Apologies for the OT, but I bet someone here knows the answer...

I'm after a JavaScript, Java applet, Flash object, COM object, whatever,
which allows the user to select either one or multiple parent or child
nodes in a tree view and visibly have the selection ripple down through
the tree.

Ideally, it would be almost identical to the tree view window used in
Windows Backup | Restore, but we need to be able to ensure that multiple
parent nodes cannot be selected, only multiple child-most nodes (if that
makes any sense).

Thanks, and sorry again for the OT.

Just to clarify this bit, the Mime-Type is sent by the client/browser but
how the client determines the correct type is browser/OS dependant. All

uses file extensions.

However, this is not necessarily the case for other OSes. Macs, for
example, store file information in a resource fork, separate from the file
data and the filename. (Note, I'm not a Mac expert by any stretch of the
imagination.) The file's type, I believe, is stored in the resource fork
and is not dependant on the filename. So, technically, a Mac client could
send a file named a.gif with a Mime-Type of Image/JPEG if the resource
fork indicated that the file was really a JPEG. Whether or not this
happens, I don't know.

Yea, I think someone mentioned an cgi variable... http_content_length
iirc,
which indicates file size in a real roundabout fashion -- it's inclusive
of
any form field content, like textareas, etc. also iirc... so, the theory
being that if you check that variable and it says 5 then you know that
a
little less than 50k was transmitted... Now that you mention it, although
no
file is placed on the server until after the cffile call, cancelling out
before that point might not save the user any time either, since I'm not
sure if this variable is passed to the server by the browser, or if the
calculation is performed by the server after all the data is sent. Again,
I
haven't tested it, so I'm not sure. :)

The content length of a request is sent in the HTTP headers so, technically,
you could check the header info before the data was actually passed along.
However, this would require a much finer level of control over the web
server's processes than CF currently allows.

RE: Multiple Emails -- HELP!!!!

2003-01-06 Thread Jeff Beer
A couple things to look at:

1. Is your e-mail server actually at www.juliagreen.com? Usually it
would be mail.something.com, etc.

2. You are using a FROM address with a different domain than the mail
server you specified in the SERVER attribute. Usually, the FROM address
must exist on the mail server.

RE: Incoming email manager

Rizal,

I'd be interested in taking a look as well. I'd be more than happy to
give you some space on my CF box at home. As for what David was looking
for, I too would want the messages to be stored in a Db. (For creating
FAQs, monitoring support trends, etc.) but your app sounds like a good
starting point. Drop me a line off-list.

David,
i've made a helpdesk/trouble ticketing system like this based on CF.

Basically it scans POP3 account, and check the subject and content of
the
email.
If the system founds specific keywords, then the email will be
redirected
to agents (cust. support).
My app uses cfschedule for mail retrieval and distribution to agents.
It also supports escalation, and you may define how the escalation
process
works easily.
All web based.

If you're interesting to see how my app works, let me know.
I need 3 days to give you a demo.
Well actually i need to find a free CF SQL server that allow
cfschedule
and then upload scripts :)

Before I go creating something on my own I wanted to see if anyone
had an application already written. We have close to 20 email
accounts that serve customer support in diferent ways and as
employees change we are finding that some of those accounts go
unchecked. I need an application that can receive these emails
and dump them into a database that I can then incorporate with
our intranet. If the emails go unanswered I would like a higher-up
to be notified.

Query Output

2003-01-06 Thread Cutter (CF_Talk)
I have a function within a CFC that reads like this:

  cffunction name=getCalendar access=remote output=false
returntype=query
cfargument name=calendar required=No type=string
default=Full Year
cfquery name=qYear datasource=#application.stconfig.DSN#
Selecti.dtStartDate,

value=#arguments.calendar# cfsqltype=CF_SQL_VARCHAR and
  i.intCalID = c.intCalendar
  Order byi.dtStartDate,
  i.strEvent
/cfquery
cfreturn qYear
/cffunction

A cfdump tells me that the query is returning the correct results. My
question is this, how do I get my output to display like this:

February
hr
dd Event Name
dd Another Event Name

March
hr
dd And the Next Event
dd And Another

April

If more clarification is needed let me know.

Hello all,

I know ASP is a bit off topic on this list but I figured I would ask
since many people here are also familiar with ASP.

A client of ours is looking for a forum solution built in ASP. I am
looking for some recommendations ranging from the most simpler / free to
the most complex feature rich and expensive forums I can find.

URLs would be really helpful so I can do some research on my end.

files with CFContent

2003-01-06 Thread E. Keith Dodd
Am setting up a preview window for a client's mailDownLoad directory--so can
view actual items, not just a list of them.
Using CFMX

Am accessing this preview template via a form select which shows all files
in
directory--desired one to preview page sent as Attach.

On preview page, determine type of file by parsing the extension, as doc,
pdf, jpg, etc:

then use the attach's extension to get the type for cfcontent

Sample code

CFSet theFile = Attach
CFSet ext = LCase(ListLast(Attach,.))

CFSwitch expression=#Variables.ext#
 cfcase value=doc
  CFSet type = application/msword
 /cfcase
 CFCase value=xls
  CFSet type=application/msexcel
 /CFCase
 cfcase value=pdf
  CFSet type=application/pdf
 /cfcase
 CFCase value=html,htm
  CFSet type=text/html
 /CFCase
 CFCase value=txt
  CFSet type=text/html
 /CFCase

/CFSwitch

CFSet Folder = Request.BasicPath MailDownLoads\
CFSet FetchFile = Folder theFile

then for output:

cfcontent file=#Variables.FetchFile# type=#Variables.Type#

all seems to work fine for pdf and txt and pictures --desired document
opened and shown in adobe, etc.
For doc however, get message that proper input not received

for xls, get IE prompt to either download or open file. If choose open,
opens it in Dreamweaver.

I've never used CFContent before, so I assume I'm using it incorrectly, but
don't know where as the pdf and txt work fine.

Appreciate any guidance.

Thanks
Keith Dodd

RE: Looking for SHOESTRING.TTF font

Subject: OT: Looking for SHOESTRING.TTF font

Anyone know where I can get hold of this very distinct font?
Called shoestring it is quite distinct. Very modern - very
  The Matrix like.

I'm not certain it's the one you're looking for, but I have
one that's put out by Southern Software.

The (very poor) web site is here: http://ssifonts.com/

It's way too large, but Shoestring fonts are on page 19 of
 this catalog: http://ssifonts.com/SSIVOL13.PDF

Just as a warning, none of the navigation links on the inner
pages seem to work, however all the front page links do.

 Hope this helps,

 Jim Davis

resend: CFLOCATION, SSL and Netscape 6

2003-01-06 Thread Everett, Al
(This doesn't seem to have made it to the list on Friday)

One of our customers seems to be having a problem with out checkout pages.
He is using Netscape 6 (don't know what dot-version; I suspect an early one)
and claims that he can't get through our multi-step checkout.

True to form, he cannot describe the actual error, where it appears, or
anything useful. We haven't been able to re-create it with Netscape 6.2, and
the vast majority of our customers (90+% use IE) have had no issues since we
implemented this months ago.

Everything in checkout is server-side, except for a CFLOCATION or two. I
suspect that the browser isn't following the redirect properly (Error 302,
isn't it?). Has anyone else encountered such a thing?

We are not inclined to make major changes for one customer with a problem he
cannot describe and that we cannot duplicate, but would getting him to at
least upgrade to 6.2 make this all go away?

Thanks a million all,

Re: Loop Errors

2003-01-06 Thread Jerry Johnson
You have a set of nested cfoutput tags. you don't need the inner set.

cfoutput
cfset i = i + 1
ChapterArray#category#[#i#] = #category#;
ChapterArrayVal#category#[#i#] = #catno# #category#;
/cfoutput
/cfoutput

Also, you are getting a variable from category from 2 different dbs in your query, and
returning both as category. How are you going to distinguish between these tow
columns? Don't you want to name one differently? (Also true for catno and parent_level)

SELECT a.category, a.catno, a.parent_level, b.category, b.catno,
b.parent_level
FROM category_menu a, category_menu b

RE: Incoming email manager

2003-01-06 Thread Jim Davis
We use a system from PeopleSoft (I'm pretty sure it's PeopleSoft). It
uses Heuristics to scan incoming email an route them it to the proper
people and then does tracking and such on it. It works rather well.

Jim Davis

Does anyone know of a prewritten application that handles incoming
 email?

Before I go creating something on my own I wanted to see if anyone
had an application already written. We have close to 20 email
accounts that serve customer support in diferent ways and as
employees change we are finding that some of those accounts go
unchecked. I need an application that can receive these emails
and dump them into a database that I can then incorporate with
our intranet. If the emails go unanswered I would like a higher-up
 to be notified.

Re: How do you estimate development time?

2003-01-06 Thread John Paul Ashenfelter
Michael,

The size and scope of the project have a very direct relationship on the
ability to cost the project -- and of course the bigger the project, the
bigger the risk of a bad estimate.

I'll second the motion that requirements/design be done at either an
hourly/daily rate, a separate project, or at least a decent flat rate
proportionate to the size of the project. For a small project (few days),
the requirements phase may be a significant portion of the time; for a large
project, maybe only 10-20%. And of course development methodology and
required documentation play a huge roll.

Let's say you use Fusebox -- an hourly/daily rate for design and then a
per-fuse charge make for a fairly reliable way to estimate costs. This also
lets you cost out improvements/changes easily (Well, adding those features
requires about 10 fuses, so at $100/fuse, I can add the feature for $1000).

Databases can also be designed in a similar way, though I'd never tell a
client that the database is $x/table -- but if you've designed databases,
you've got a pretty good idea of how many objects, how complex the
relationships are, etc, from the initial discussions. Building in a cushion
for inevitable changes makes sense, but I find that 25% is pretty reliably
keeping me out of debt

For (web) design, I determine the number of templates (visual templates, not
ColdFusion templates) and count the designer cost for that many pages --
which I tend to sub out. There's a basic cost for look/feel and then each
major template would be an addon.

It's crucial to build in maintenance costs, which can easily be the majority
of your direct costs. I like doubling my initial estimate to account for
maintenance and inevitable little tweaks and problems.

It's also useful to remember that if you've doing modular development, you
probably have a well-used set of application template components (eg
security, menu system, basic template/layout, etc) that become fixed costs
for you after a couple projects -- so if you lose a little on a project
designing the initial security system, but it's one that will work (at least
as a solid foundation) for other projects, you'll win over time.

Subject: How do you estimate development time?

I have a question that probably gnaws at most development houses at some
stage - what is the process you use to estimate the number of hours
you're going to need to complete a project?

Do you use a method that boils down to we had a similar job to that
last month and that took us 55 hours and this job has that extra tricky
bit so it'll probably take us 58 hours or are you more scientific than
 that?

I have to change my methodology for billing my major client from a
hours-worked basis to a job-by-job basis which means I'm going to have
to be more accurate in estimating how much a job is going to cost me.

Okay,we have been using soxml to return the content from UPS to a cf
usable format. Apparently this morning, they started sending everything
with UTF-8 encoding in the xml doc. This makes action=XML2CF puke with
an encoding error. Can anyone please point me to a workaround or how
its been dealt with in your experience?

 Hi all,

In the midst of working on the ever-expanding improvements to my content
management system, I realized that I was suddenly doing an awful lot of
exceptionally reuseable and generic work with UDF's, in particular
involving
javascript interaction. I considered submitting some of these functions to
the Common Function Library (www.cflib.org), and I think I did submit one
or
two. Because many of them are interdependant or simply make a lot more
sense
in the context of other functions in my library I decided that perhaps a
better idea would be to isolate them into a separate API and present them
as
a contiguous, extensible, open-source library management tool, and so I've
spent part of the past week or so doing just that.

This is open-source, so this is not an advertisement. I'm interrested in
any
feedback members of the CF community might provide -- suggestions, bug
 reports, etc.

Check out the docs and/or download the API at http://www.turnkey.to/tapi

I think the two big balance points are:

Java developers are more expensive because they are few in numbers.

v.

MSCDs and MSCEs are everywhere, and cheaper.

If java became the big open source language used by all, you would most
likely see a reversal in numbers vs. pay.

Java (these might be good questions..)
1.How many versions of JVM's do we have today?
2.Do all the basic Java API's work whether it be IBM/SUN/BEA/ORCALE?
3.What do you need to develop a Java J2EE/Other App?
J2EE complex and expensive talent..YES. But how many times does a
company re-write software?
Is Tomcat expensive? is J2SE(JDK) expensive? Maintenance contracts?

Vs

C#/Visual Basic (MS whatever)
What are your choices in development?(MS Only?).
How many vendors do we have for .NET Framework?
Will C# code run on any platform?
How much money are corportations spending on Licence agreements?
Contracts? MSDN subsciptions?
Talk about.. .Net Complexity?
It took me around 11/2hrs to get Webshpere Studio running and compiling

It took me a couple days to get .NET framework/Visual Studio.Net running

Yea.. Install took 2hrs..finished a full movie during the install..

Java as the open platform? Java is a platform supported by multiple
vendors, yes, but I don't believe this qualifies it as open (despite
what Sun's marketing department might say). C# and the CLI, on the other
hand, have been ratified by the ECMA. Whether or not that's a good thing
is up for debate, but I think it does exhibit a greater degree of
openness.

Have you read articles of Microsoft Windows.Net and what
 corporations think about their pricing..?

I think you're mixing up workstation and productivity software licensing
with server licensing. While quite a few are upset about the former,
IBM/Oracle/Sun/Bea compete in the latter. If we're comparing Oracle's
licensing to Microsoft's, well, I'll take Microsoft's any day of the
week.

Interesting and funny!. I happen to do a little internet shopping around
Christmas and New year. About 75% of the GOOD Clothing/accessories/home
decor websites were JSP and am pretty sure they are in some fashion J2EE
compliant.. and scaled very well inspite of all the traffic(especially
ppl shopping for good prices and stuff)

I hope you know that CFMX is just a J2EE Application deployed on JRun
and quite interesting enough on IBM websphere.

With sofware giants like IBM/Oracle/Sun/Bea pushing Java and J2EE...Just

Have you read articles of Microsoft Windows.Net and what corporations

I really think Linux/Lindows/Open Platform and Java will take off and in
this economy of corporate cutbacks.. corporations are actively looking
for cheaper solutions/software.

As for CFMX and Java... i think for heavy duty applications.. CFMX will
be suitable for Presentation Tier and Java will be used for all the
heavy duty middle tier processing..
btw (we are not talking about a comment form).

It made it.

Everything in checkout is server-side, except for a CFLOCATION or two. I
suspect that the browser isn't following the redirect properly (Error 302,
 isn't it?).

Statuscode 302.

Has anyone else encountered such a thing?

Have seen it a few times, but never Netscape only. Pretty much the only
thing you can do is to verify that your server is sending the correct
HTTP headers. For thatm telnet to the pages that give a redirect and see
if they do.

Upgrading is probably the best route unless the customer can give more
detailed information.

As it mentions in the description, it's actually a general Apache issue, but it was

No, unfortunately--

Just letting you know what the techs told us; we couldn't get CFMX to
work with Ensim for some reason or another. They said that the two
don't seem to get along and we ended up snagging a box with Webmin on
it.

I prefer Ensim for it's ease-of-use, but...

Apparently, there are more than a few undocumented things when it

RE: cferror

2003-01-06 Thread Mosh Teitelbaum
Tim:

The two should be mutually exclusive as the JS alert is client-side and
CFERROR only traps errors that occur within ColdFusion (i.e., server-side).

When you say that a JS alert is encountered, do you mean that the JS dialog
box pops-up or do you mean whenever you have the alert code in a CFM file?
Also, what kind of exception is being thrown? What other information is
available from the Exception? Is it possible that some other code,
somewhere around the JS code, is causing the exception?

Okay,we have been using soxml to return the content from UPS to a cf
usable format. Apparently this morning, they started sending everything
with UTF-8 encoding in the xml doc. This makes action=XML2CF puke with
an encoding error. Can anyone please point me to a workaround or how

I may have made some little mistakes, but this should do it. If you want to
do fancier formatting (e.g., tables or bulleted lists), you should be able

I have a function within a CFC that reads like this:

  cffunction name=getCalendar access=remote output=false
returntype=query
cfargument name=calendar required=No type=string
default=Full Year
cfquery name=qYear datasource=#application.stconfig.DSN#

  i.txtDescription
  FromtblCalendarItems i,

value=#arguments.calendar# cfsqltype=CF_SQL_VARCHAR and
  i.intCalID = c.intCalendar
  Order byi.dtStartDate,
  i.strEvent
/cfquery
cfreturn qYear
/cffunction

A cfdump tells me that the query is returning the correct results. My
question is this, how do I get my output to display like this:

February
hr
dd Event Name
dd Another Event Name

March
hr
dd And the Next Event
dd And Another

April
hr
dd And Even Another

If more clarification is needed let me know.

On second thought, this is slightly impractical since we are talking

asking the client to upgrade is the easiest.

Subject: soXML help/question really needed

Okay,we have been using soxml to return the content from UPS to a cf
usable format. Apparently this morning, they started sending everything
with UTF-8 encoding in the xml doc. This makes action=XML2CF puke with
an encoding error. Can anyone please point me to a workaround or how
its been dealt with in your experience?

Actually, the Ensim issue IS documented. :-)
http://www.macromedia.com/v1/Handlers/index.cfm?ID=23524Method=Full (#6 in
the list at the bottom of the article)

As it mentions in the description, it's actually a general Apache issue, but
it was the Ensim version that made the bug most visible. The 1.3.x connector
that is available for download in the technote does contain the fix for this
bug. The 2.0.x version should hopefully be added to the article within the
next week or so. I'll be sure to get the technote updated to reflect this
information.

Apparently, there are more than a few undocumented things when it
comes to CFMX and Linux.

Sorry.

RE: Query Output

2003-01-06 Thread Scott Brady
A cfdump tells me that the query is returning the correct results. My
question is this, how do I get my output to display like this:

February
hr
dd Event Name
dd Another Event Name

March
hr
dd And the Next Event
dd And Another

Here are some basics, with very little formatting, which should get you what you're
looking for:

cfoutput query=qYear group=dtStartDate
 #DateFormat(qYear.dtStartDate,)#
 hr /
 cfoutput
  #qYear.strEvent#br /
 /cfoutput

ChapterArray#category#[#i#] = #category#;
ChapterArrayVal#category#[#i#] = #catno# #category#;

why do you think I dont need this??

Because the inner-most cfoutput is just being used simply to output the #variables#.

The outer-most cfoutput (with the query and group attributes) does this as well, so
the inner-most cfoutput is unneccessary.

If the inner-most query were being used to loop through a queryset, then it would be
useful.

But since it is not, it can be removed. And if it can be removed, it should be removed.

Jerry

Why don't I need to nest the cfoutputs?

so the parser catches the nested cfoutput tags as a coding error.

Creating an RTF is pretty much the same as HTML -- but reliably creating RTF

No, unfortunately--

Just letting you know what the techs told us; we couldn't get CFMX to
work with Ensim for some reason or another. They said that the two
don't seem to get along and we ended up snagging a box with Webmin on
it.

I prefer Ensim for it's ease-of-use, but...

Apparently, there are more than a few undocumented things when it

I like to do the ActionScript development in HomeSite+ and then just do
an include in the falsh movie like so:

#include flashfile.as

You can add the .as extension to homesite+/CFStudio and it will syntax
highlight and color code it for you as well.

Although, if you are new to actionscript, you may want to use the editor
in flash itself, it'll give you hints and syntax validation...

Java and MS in the schools (WAS Re: RE: RE: CFMX and Java)

2003-01-06 Thread John Paul Ashenfelter
Just a couple of comments to throw in the ring ---

Many universities are still teaching C/C++ in their core computer science
curriculums. The august, public ivy university in my hometown has reduced
the students in CS to going to the community college for their Java classes
for the past few years. In the C++ world, teaching using MS C++ makes a fair
bit of sense, especially as budgets are cut and licenses for academics are
cheap -- and because MS C++ (Visual Studio) is a pretty decent development
environment. So students coming out know C++ plus anything they pick up on
their own, which in mosts cases, is a lot. Especially since web tools (e.g.
CF, ASP, JSP, etc) aren't taught frequently or are electives at best. But
they also come out knowing algorithms, standard design methods, and many
other non-language-specific skills that are the ones that are harder to
learn. They are still green, but better than many of the used to be an
English major, now I'm a developer (I know, an English major may be a
really good developer -- and you don't need a CS degree to be a great
developer -- but it helps. And I say that as a person with several chemistry
degrees instead)

Community colleges, which are much more flexible with regards to courses,
instructors, and community needs are the ones that really push the
marketable skills -- and the certification programs/curriculums. Quite
frankly, it's a lot easier to get some of the MS certifications than the
others. I haven't seen a lot of Java boot camps that do 2-week
certifications and promise you'll pass. And in fairness, the MCSE is getting
tougher to get as a paper MCSE.

I've taken 4 java courses at the community college from an outstanding
instructor (full-time Nortel Java engineer/manager of 170 developers by day,
teaches by night) and we've focused on the SDK, JBoss, Cocoon, MySQL,
Postgres, and most of the Jakarta projects. The only Microsoft is Windows on
the workstations :) So the classes are out there -- but just rarely at the
big universities.

And as far as MS ruling the schools, there's a better balance between Mac
and PC and Linux at most universities on the desktop than just about
anywhere else. For faculty, it used to be something like
40/60/small-but-not-zero at the local u. And OSX is pushing a lot of CS
grads the Mac way.

I think the two big balance points are:

Java developers are more expensive because they are few in numbers.

 v.

MSCDs and MSCEs are everywhere, and cheaper.

If java became the big open source language used by all, you would most
likely see a reversal in numbers vs. pay.

 Java as the open platform?

certification experiences/plans?

2003-01-06 Thread John Paul Ashenfelter
Hi all,

With the start of the new year, I'm reevaluating my tech certification plans for the
coming year and was wondering what the most common certifications were in the CF-Talk
world. I'm guessing there's a lot of CF5/CFMX certs but I'm more interested in the
others that people have gotten: the Microsoft certs (MCSE, MCSD, MCDBA, etc); the
Cisco certs (CCNA, CCDA, etc), Sun (java developer/programmer/architect), Oralce, CIW,
the new MySQL core, etc. (not brainbench -- I'm talking about the 'official' cert
programs from the company itself).

So, what do you have? What are you working on? What is worthwhile/worthless? And how
many of you have recertified under CFMX?

I'll start by saying I'm not a big fan of certs, but understand they are a necessary
evil, especially in a field where anyone can basically say I'm a web
developer/DBA/C++ programmer/etc and have a few dot.com references :)

So my plans for the year are open, but probably are leaning towards databases (MCDBA,
Oracle) and security (Cisco). And now that I finally went and got certified last year
for CF, I'll reup the CFMX *grin*.

RE: Internal webserver vs. Apache on MX for JRun was Re: CFMXJ2ee advantages over CFMX Standalone

2003-01-06 Thread Rob Rohan
I have been playing with using apache mods (with tomcat though, but I assume
JRun is the same), and I have it setup so apache handles static pages and
graphics while the processing engine only handles putting out the dynamic
pages.

I don't know if it helps, but it seems logical that serving static stuff
from apache relieves some of the load from the processing engine.

I've been enjoying this thread immensely, as the support/community for CFMX
for J2EE servers is extremely sparse and I've had lots of different
questions. I've seen posts on the forums regarding the following question,
but have yet to see a reply.

What's the advantage of running through a webserver such as Apache versus
the web server that's built in to JRun? Mind you, I'm talking about *CFMX
FOR JRUN*, not CFMX standalone. I know about the standalone performance
differences, but do these same differences exist for JRun? For a relatively
low-traffic, internally used site, does it matter if I go into the jrun.xml
file and change the port fro 8100 to 80 and just go with that?

Thanks,
Dave.

I used them for a while, then left. Was not very happy with them at all.

I had some problems with their CF_CFM_FILE tag (Replaces the CFFILE tag,
I think that was the name of it). They had an error and had to fix it,
was not recognizing my login and password that I passed. Guess a DB
issue, but besides that I had no problems at all. Never used the

Actually, the Ensim issue IS documented. :-)
http://www.macromedia.com/v1/Handlers/index.cfm?ID=23524Method=Full (#6
in
the list at the bottom of the article)

As it mentions in the description, it's actually a general Apache issue,
but
it was the Ensim version that made the bug most visible. The 1.3.x
connector
that is available for download in the technote does contain the fix for
this
bug. The 2.0.x version should hopefully be added to the article within
the
next week or so.

Good thought, Uwe, but I've run 4.01 under Win2K for a year and a half

Not sure if it was answered -
Here is what I had used - this is not MX - don't know if it changed -
haven't had to do verity with mx yet - but simply note IndexExtensions -
just simply list them there...

CFSET IndexDirectory = d:\webs\internal\
CFSET IndexRecurse = NO
CFSET IndexExtensions = .doc

CFINDEX
collection=#IndexCollection#
action=REFRESH
type=PATH
key=#IndexDirectory#\
extensions=#IndexExtensions#
recurse=#IndexRecurse#

RE: certification experiences/plans?

2003-01-06 Thread Gary W. Sullivan II
I myself am working on my MCAD.NET. After obtaining that(just one more
test to go!)I plan on certifying myself in CFMX. I've looked into other
certs, but can't justify them in helping me in my current line of work.

I really like the .NET Framework, and the MCAD is just 3 tests. Plus,
check out this link:

I also obtained Brainbench certs in SQL and ASP, but they don't do much

Subject: certification experiences/plans?

Hi all,

With the start of the new year, I'm reevaluating my tech certification
plans for the coming year and was wondering what the most common
certifications were in the CF-Talk world. I'm guessing there's a lot of
CF5/CFMX certs but I'm more interested in the others that people have
gotten: the Microsoft certs (MCSE, MCSD, MCDBA, etc); the Cisco certs
(CCNA, CCDA, etc), Sun (java developer/programmer/architect), Oralce,
CIW, the new MySQL core, etc. (not brainbench -- I'm talking about the
'official' cert programs from the company itself).

So, what do you have? What are you working on? What is
worthwhile/worthless? And how many of you have recertified under CFMX?

I'll start by saying I'm not a big fan of certs, but understand they are
a necessary evil, especially in a field where anyone can basically say
I'm a web developer/DBA/C++ programmer/etc and have a few dot.com
references :)

So my plans for the year are open, but probably are leaning towards
databases (MCDBA, Oracle) and security (Cisco). And now that I finally
went and got certified last year for CF, I'll reup the CFMX *grin*.

Yeah, but most programmers I know didn't learn in school. (myself
included) MCSE programs are every where, but at the schools I've seen,
there are the same amount of java courses as C, as well as Perl. Now you
can say MS rules the schools cuz of VB and C#. MS controls more
languages than any other org right? So of course there will be a lot of
'MS' courses.

The only way you'll see a reversal in numbers/pay is if schools were
capable
