CF Certification

2005-05-23 Thread Ian Skinner
If one had a chance to have one's company pay for a CF Developer Certification.
But wasn't 100% sure one would pass. Where could one go for a realistic trial?

RE: CF Certification

2005-05-23 Thread Matt Osbun
That's what I used as a prep. It was pretty good at pointing out a lot
of the changes between CF5 and CFMX- I had never used CFMX before the
test, so that was important. Good mix of questions, and a large enough
list of questions that it took awhile before I got to the point where I
was doing well simply because I'd seen the questions a few times
before... ;)

I think the actual test was noticeably harder though, but maybe I just
test badly.

Re: CF Certification

2005-05-23 Thread Jim Campbell
/aol on Weeg's comment.

I'm a terrible tester, but still managed to do respectably well on the
cert test on my first shot. I know I tripped up on some of the more,
shall we say, circuitously presented problems, and there's a lot of
questions asking if ArrayNew or NewArray is the correct syntax,
etc., but it's not a killer. I found the Brain Bench Oracle admin tests
to be a lot harder, personally.

Basically, if you use CF in your everyday work and know what you're
doing, you'll at least get a basic certification. And definitely try
the exam buster - it'll clue you into how the test is presented and
you'll be a little more comfortable with the whole thing when you take
it (YMMV).

RE: CF Certification

2003-11-26 Thread Tony Weeg
there is a ben forta book, all about preparing for the cfmx exam.

I just took the test on Thursday @ Max, I Passed :), and the book was very
helpful (thanks Scotty).
I can also say that the cfmx buster exam by centrasoft (www.centrasoft.com)
is irreplaceable.

the forta book, also has a 15% discount in it!

There's a huge amount of back-and-forth in the archives regarding that
very question, but I can quickly attest that having a CF Certification
put me in front of the pack in interviews and has helped land contracts
as well as my current position. It's more than worth the cost.

I guess with such a long resume no one bathers too much about
certifications. But if you are fresh from the school, certifications allow
you to get your 'foot in the door' of potential employers.

Several of you were discussing it, so I found the official answer for

Macromedia's Certification Department is working on a new certification
exam for the next release of ColdFusion. We expect to release this exam
in August 2002. Developers who are getting certified before and up until
the release of the new exam will retain their certification status as a
Macromedia Certified Professional for 12 months after the release of the
new exam. After 12 months, we will ask that the ColdFusion 5 Certified
Developers get re-certified on the new release of ColdFusion.

The 5 may roll over to MX. The last time I talked to some one at then
allaire about it they told me that they were going to roll up one
version. So from 4.5 to 5 makes sense but not another, so 5 may go to 6.
5 was quite enhanced over 4.5 as well, granted not as drastic but
still...

I bet (IMHO) that 5 will roll up one. But I'd ask if it's really that
big of deal. MX is still months away.

I would be extremely suprised if they carry over 45 or 5 certifications to
Neo Remember, you talked to somebody at *Allaire*, not Macromedia There is
a subtle, yet distinguishable difference, and times have certainly changed
from the Allaire days I would say without hesitation that the feature
enhancement from 45 to 5 is squat compared to the enhancements from CF 5 to
CF MX Yes, Neo still uses the same tag-based features we're all used to,
but the extensibility, flexibility, and sheer power of Neo blows away any
previous version At the risk of the NDA, I'll stop there, but I think you
get my point

Although, as you said, CF MX is a bit of a ways off, let alone an official
certification test for it, I would guess So getting certified is never a
bad idea

RE: CF Certification for 5.0 rolling over to next version?

2002-03-05 Thread John Wilker

True enough the difference is much greater but I know if I paid to take
5 and it was over in just about a year? That sucks. That's also part of
why I think they'll roll people. I'm sure the VB6 cert is rolling to
VB.net, well I;m not sure but from what I've seen of their certification
practices it does track. I think MS is like 2 versions before a persons
cert is retired. Either way I know where I'll be, in a chair taking the
MX cert. One thing I am sure of is a rolled 4.5 won't grandfather LOL.
Under the same NDA so yeah I hear ya LOL.

And you're very right about the difference in ALLR and MACR... Sometimes
the difference is less than subtle :)

The 5 may roll over to MX. The last time I talked to some one at then
allaire about it they told me that they were going to roll up one
version. So from 4.5 to 5 makes sense but not another, so 5 may go to
 6. 5 was quite enhanced over 4.5 as well, granted not as drastic but
 still...

I bet (IMHO) that 5 will roll up one. But I'd ask if it's really that
big of deal. MX is still months away.

I would be extremely suprised if they carry over 4.5 or 5 certifications
to Neo. Remember, you talked to somebody at *Allaire*, not Macromedia.
There is a subtle, yet distinguishable difference, and times have
certainly changed from the Allaire days. I would say without hesitation
that the feature enhancement from 4.5 to 5 is squat compared to the
enhancements from CF 5 to CF MX. Yes, Neo still uses the same tag-based
features we're all used to, but the extensibility, flexibility, and
sheer power of Neo blows away any previous version. At the risk of the
NDA, I'll stop there, but I think you get my point.

Although, as you said, CF MX is a bit of a ways off, let alone an
official certification test for it, I would guess. So getting certified
is never a bad idea.

CF Certification for 5.0 rolling over to next version?

2002-03-04 Thread Garza, Jeff

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting certified, but I'm curious if
the certification for CF50 will carry over to the next version Or will a
completely separate test be needed I'd hate to waste the money now and
have to re-certify with the next version Anyone from Macromedia want to
chime in on this?

2002-03-04 Thread Dave Carabetta

I remember way back when they upgraded my CF 4.5 cert to 5.0 without making
me take the test, they said in the generic letter that Neo (now called
ColdFusion MX) would require actually re-taking an upated cert test.

If you think about it, it makes sense considering all the new features in CF
MX. ;)

RE: CF Certification - feedback needed.

2002-02-12 Thread BEN MORRIS

I agree with these comments and offer another point:

Studying for certification is a good refresher for any developer, no
matter how experienced. We all get used to tackling problems certain
ways. Preparing for cert re-indtroduces us to all of the nooks and
crannys of the language, and you might learn about a couple of tags that
you weren't aware of.

Brian Simmons [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/11/02 11:26PM
My opinion of (any) certification:

1) A Certification does not a good developer make.
2) But, with that said it does show a commitment to your craft and could
separate you from other job candidates.

If you're going to take the CF 5.0 certification exam, be sure to check

Certification is NOT a panacea. It's only one item on a list that
should include many other things - people skills, team involvement, a
portfolio of sorts etc. Having said that, it's cheap and relatively
easy to get certified if you are an intermediate level programmer - so
why not? It won't automatically get you a job, but it will show you have
an interest in a certain level of professionalism - and that you are
ambitious (a desirable quality to managers who are not insecure). that's
my take and I'm sticking to it g.

I have only seen a couple of job postings the say certification desired
or required. In the current market it seems that who is willing to work
for the lowest rate is what the majority of employers are concerned with
- at least that is what I am seeing on SoCal. That said I would still
take it because if you are competing with another developer that has the
same qualifications it may help tip things in your favor.

I may take the exam in few weeks and I'm wondering if anyone , who has
taken the exam and passed , would be willing to share some of their
stories after getting the certification.

Did it improve your employment or contract opportunities greatly? Did
the managers take you more seriously because they understood you were a
certified developer?

Things like that are coming to my mind lately and I'd love to hear all
people's success stories. Thanks!

2002-02-11 Thread Jeffry Houser

This is an interesting conclusion, but you probably do not have a big
enough sample to say for sure. I think there are a lot of plusses to
certification, especially if you are consulting. It makes you an expert to
people who don't know any better.

And, just about every company uses some form of technology, but not every
company is a technology company.
For example, let's say the editors of Mike's Guitars Magazine (Not a real
magazine) want to create a web-site and update it on a weekly basis (Let's
assume they publish issues on a weekly basis). So, they turn around and
hire a full-time web developer. If they understood web technology, they
probably wouldn't make good editors of a guitar magazine... So, they hire
someone who does. It makes logical business sense.

fail because they do not understand the industry that they are in.

That's usually where a portfolio comes in to play. If you (with no CF
cert) show someone your work, and it's excellent work, then someone with
a CF cert shows them some work, and it's shabby, they're more then
likely going to go with the one with better skills and experience.

Thanks guys for all of your feedback. Since there's a glut of programmers out

I thought in this case, macromedia certification may be able to seperate

Again, it's just to seperate myself from other candidates. I agree with some

I think it will do what you are hoping, it's all in how you present it
IMHO. My personal opinion and the way I present it is, I took the time
to quantify and prove what I know, did the other guys and gals applying

Plus it's not overly expensive so it's a small investment.

Thanks guys for all of your feedback. Since there's a glut of programmers out

I thought in this case, macromedia certification may be able to seperate
those 2 groups. My web site contains all the online portfolio, resume,
snapshots and everything employers may need to know about me.

You may also want to seek certification in other areas. ( SQL Server /
JavaScript / Web Technology )
I know Brainbench has a lot of certifications out there and there are
other third party companies that perform independent third party
certifications. ( Note: I would definitely go after Macromedia
Certification first, but the others certainly won't hurt you)

My opinion of (any) certification:

1) A Certification does not a good developer make.
2) But, with that said it does show a commitment to your craft and could
separate you from other job candidates.

CF Certification

2002-02-08 Thread NathanielHorwitz

I may take the exam in few weeks and I'm wondering if anyone , who has taken
the exam and passed , would be willing to share some of their stories after
getting the certification.

Did it improve your employment or contract opportunities greatly? Did the
managers take you more seriously because they understood you were a certified
developer?

Things like that are coming to my mind lately and I'd love to hear all
people's success stories. Thanks!

HI everyone.
I am an intermediate CF developer in college. At work (school web team)
I
was asked to look into setting up an intranet, but the uppers want to
pull
stuff from an exhcange server (schedules, appointments, calendar info)
for
use in the intranet.
Is there anyway to use CF to pull Data from an exchange server and
possibly
update it and send it back to the server ... all using CF.

I would appreciate any insight anyone could offer. Thanks everyone.

Re: CF Certification

2001-07-25 Thread G

Some will say yes, some will say no, Mike. I believe that any certification
can carry SOME value, in that there will always be employers stuck on the
notion that a certified applicant carries some magical power over someone
without the piece of paper. So if you can afford it, and have the time, it
can be worthwhile. However, don't get bogged down with certification. Once
on the job, it's always going to be how you can apply your knowledge to
different and mostly unexpected situations that sets you apart. Having a
certificate is nice, having a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn
and work with others is a must :)

And the single most important thing: Never be afraid to say I don't know
how to do that.

Best of luck Mike!

Yeah .. don't fail ;)

Actually, on tip is, don't rush! There is plenty of time to finish the
test. When I took mine, I felt really pressured and rushed through it. I
didn't need to .. I finished with 25 minutes to spare. Also, make sure you
read the instructions for each question. Sometimes there are multiple
correct answers, so make sure you are aware of how many things you are
supposed to select.

All non-CF questions are generic SQL and web server (and HTML)

As long as you know your general non-CF stuff, then it's a breeze - the hard
bits are the ambiguous questions which they want one answer and there are 2
or 3 which could be right... you have to predict which one you think they
want as the answer

Unless they've fixed the questions that is - when I took it at the Conf, I'm
sure I got 3 or 4 wrong because I was answering them "Real World" rather
than "What they want as the answer"

Actually I read that you get the results of the test instantly
 because its
all computerized, and if you fail you can take it up to 3 or 4
 times a year
but a minimum of 30 days between each exam.

You probably will when the test is finalized, but no, beta
 testers did not
find out their scores at the end. Don't see why...I know they haven't
decided what is pass or fail yet, but don't see why we couldn't find out
 our raw score.

Definitely not right now, since there are still people that have to take
it! Can't say after that if it will be available or not, since they may or
may not be using questions from it in the future. But I doubt it.

You might enjoy trying the test at CFSpot though. http://www.cfspot.com

have it in one of the Fusion Authority alerts. Let others hear your remarks.

From their FAQ.
-
Are there Certified ColdFusion Developer study guides available?
Study guide information will be available soon. Please check back regularly.

You should be familiar, however, with the following topical areas as they
relate to Web development, ColdFusion, and CFML:

Web Fundamentals
Application Development*
Database Concepts
State Management
Trouble Shooting

* - The majority of the exam will focus on application development with
ColdFusion and CFML.
-

How did you find out about the beta? Any idea where the rest of us can have
a look?
