RE: CF Certification
That's what I used as a prep. It was pretty good at pointing out a lot of the changes between CF5 and CFMX- I had never used CFMX before the test, so that was important. Good mix of questions, and a large enough list of questions that it took awhile before I got to the point where I was doing well simply because I'd seen the questions a few times before... ;) I think the actual test was noticeably harder though, but maybe I just test badly. Re: CF Certification
/aol on Weeg's comment. I'm a terrible tester, but still managed to do respectably well on the cert test on my first shot. I know I tripped up on some of the more, shall we say, circuitously presented problems, and there's a lot of questions asking if ArrayNew or NewArray is the correct syntax, etc., but it's not a killer. I found the Brain Bench Oracle admin tests to be a lot harder, personally. Basically, if you use CF in your everyday work and know what you're doing, you'll at least get a basic certification. And definitely try the exam buster - it'll clue you into how the test is presented and you'll be a little more comfortable with the whole thing when you take it (YMMV). - Jim Tony Weeg wrote: how often must we re-up our cert? also, i used exam buster, and passed. now, im a special case as i only got 850 on my sat's and basically 1.6'd my way through high school :) i test horribly, and i passed the cfmx test. tw On 5/23/05, Matt Osbun [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: That's what I used as a prep. I've been in this industry for about 14 years and nobody at any job I have ever had (including ones I was the boss at) has ever asked or cared about those things. I guess with such a long resume no one bathers too much about certifications. But if you are fresh from the school, certifications allow you to get your 'foot in the door' of potential employers. The 5 may roll over to MX. The last time I talked to some one at then allaire about it they told me that they were going to roll up one version. So from 4.5 to 5 makes sense but not another, so 5 may go to 6. 5 was quite enhanced over 4.5 as well, granted not as drastic but still... I bet (IMHO) that 5 will roll up one. RE: CF Certification for 5.0 rolling over to next version?
True enough the difference is much greater but I know if I paid to take 5 and it was over in just about a year? That sucks. That's also part of why I think they'll roll people. I'm sure the VB6 cert is rolling to VB.net, well I;m not sure but from what I've seen of their certification practices it does track. I think MS is like 2 versions before a persons cert is retired. Either way I know where I'll be, in a chair taking the MX cert. One thing I am sure of is a rolled 4.5 won't grandfather LOL. Under the same NDA so yeah I hear ya LOL. And you're very right about the difference in ALLR and MACR... Sometimes the difference is less than subtle :) J. RE: CF Certification - feedback needed.
I agree with these comments and offer another point: Studying for certification is a good refresher for any developer, no matter how experienced. We all get used to tackling problems certain ways. Preparing for cert re-indtroduces us to all of the nooks and crannys of the language, and you might learn about a couple of tags that you weren't aware of. Brian Simmons [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/11/02 11:26PM My opinion of (any) certification: 1) A Certification does not a good developer make. 2) But, with that said it does show a commitment to your craft and could separate you from other job candidates. RE: CF Certification - feedback needed.
I completely agree. If you plan (I'm not saying you do) to rest just on the paper it's not worth much. After all it's just a test, I've seen people pass the MCSE exams without actually having any experience, they took classes and read books. That's not to say they are better qualified than an engineer with a few years of experience.. I took the test because Keen said, if it boils down to two candidates the own who took the time to get something in writing that he knows his stuff maybe have better chances. I know that along with some other extracurricular activities, my cert helped land my current gig. The way I see it, it's what you make of it. I intend (some day to get MM's web developer cert) just because IMHO it sets me apart as being someone who put my money where my mouth is. Before any flames come my way I'm not dissing anyone who is and ain't gonna get certified, but I know plenty of developers who aren't worth half what they make and could never pass the test, and I want to make sure when it comes down to me and them, I stand out. Re: CF Certification - feedback needed.
This is an interesting conclusion, but you probably do not have a big enough sample to say for sure. I think there are a lot of plusses to certification, especially if you are consulting. It makes you an expert to people who don't know any better. And, just about every company uses some form of technology, but not every company is a technology company. For example, let's say the editors of Mike's Guitars Magazine (Not a real magazine) want to create a web-site and update it on a weekly basis (Let's assume they publish issues on a weekly basis). So, they turn around and hire a full-time web developer. If they understood web technology, they probably wouldn't make good editors of a guitar magazine... So, they hire someone who does. Totally true. It's the cert and the portfolio and the... And the... And a few... And of course, the... There's no one thing. For example I have almost no portfolio except for screen captures of sites long since changed or gone altogether. I do intranet apps so it's hard to point people to the site, so the cert helps in that regard. J. Re: CF Certification - feedback needed.
Thanks guys for all of your feedback. Since there's a glut of programmers out there and I'm simply looking for ways to seperate myself from the rest of the programmers who may be mis-representing them. I thought in this case, macromedia certification may be able to seperate those 2 groups. My web site contains all the online portfolio, resume, snapshots and everything employers may need to know about me. Again, it's just to seperate myself from other candidates. I agree with some of you that this is just one item and I'm looking for this certification to show the employers what I am capable unlike other developers who can talk their way into any job but can't do diddly poo with coding. Thanks again- I completely agree. Then I'd do it. I think it will do what you are hoping, it's all in how you present it IMHO. My personal opinion and the way I present it is, I took the time to quantify and prove what I know, did the other guys and gals applying for this job? I may take the exam in few weeks and I'm wondering if anyone , who has taken the exam and passed , would be willing to share some of their stories after getting the certification. Re: CF Certification
Some will say yes, some will say no, Mike. I believe that any certification can carry SOME value, in that there will always be employers stuck on the notion that a certified applicant carries some magical power over someone without the piece of paper. So if you can afford it, and have the time, it can be worthwhile. However, don't get bogged down with certification. Once on the job, it's always going to be how you can apply your knowledge to different and mostly unexpected situations that sets you apart. Having a certificate is nice, having a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and work with others is a must :) And the single most important thing: Never be afraid to say I don't know how to do that. RE: CF Certification
I'm not too sure that the certification will give you much of an advantage early on... unless you plan to go straight into contracting. I got my first job as a CF developer without having a large portfolio, certification, or years of experience, but because I was able to show my employer that I could problem solve. RE: CF Certification
Thanks for the kind reply. I will keep your comments in mind as job offers unfold and graduation closes in. Right now I am working as an intern in the DC area and am learning so much. Cold Fusion is a lot of fun and my willingness to learn as much as possible is always there. I just needed some insight as to wether or not certifications were as important as some make them out to be. Thanks again, Mike Michael T. I haven't seen data like that for some years, and never on ColdFusion. But, back when I was doing Notes development, I'm pretty sure that Lotus certified developers made 7-10 thousand more. Re: CF-Certification
Yeah .. don't fail ;) Actually, on tip is, don't rush! There is plenty of time to finish the test. When I took mine, I felt really pressured and rushed through it. I didn't need to .. I finished with 25 minutes to spare. Also, make sure you read the instructions for each question. Sometimes there are multiple correct answers, so make sure you are aware of how many things you are supposed to select. Any idea where the rest of us can have a look? .Todd - Original Message - From: Gigi S. All's I know is that it is 90 minutes long, and will be 60-75 multiple choice questions. I don't quite know how to study for it. I'm just reviewing my CFML language reference, and glancing over syntax functions. I hope that's enough!! -- Archives: http://www.eGroups.com/list/cf-talk To Unsubscribe visit http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=listsbody=lists/cf_talk or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in the body.
Re: CF Certification
well, i guess constantly watching the CF talk and being able to answer atleast 80% of the questions should be a good preparation for CF certification. - Original Message - From: "Angel Stewart" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, May 21, 2000 3:05 PM Subject: Re: CF Certification Beta test?
