I very much like cfbb. I can't speak to scale but Andrew (the guy who wrote
it) does have a fairly extensive set of users and refers to a couple other
sites which have even more. I don't know about the caching of pages. Been a
while since I looked at the source files, but can remember is uses a myriad of
includes.

I love CF as much as the next guy, but I've never found a message board
software written in CF that is as good as some of the open source ones
out there written in PHP, like phpbb and phorum. Most of them have more
features than fuseTalk basic does for $449 (assuming you want the source)

I'm perfectly happy integrating a php-based message board into a
cold-fusion based web site rather than forking out a ton of money.

Seems like just every every decent cold fusion powered message board
out there is a commercial product, which is a shame.

PHP has more of a community following. It stems from an open-source
methodology thus the majority of tools written in it are open-sourced.
Compare that to ColdFusion where people have to pay large amounts of
money to use it, many attempt to recoup some of this through selling
add-ons.It is a completely different mind-set.

Rick,

Ah. I see your point - although anyone who has done any business with Sun Micro might bridle at the thought that the
main purpose of their free psuedo open-source java project is to benefit the world in general without a thought to
profit. And let's not forget all those enterprise applications out there that run on Java for thousands of dollars per
CPU a year - should they all be free because Java is free?Apache is another story.I personally don't think of
software or technology with enough piety to separate it from my profit motive (ha). I'm quite happy to have folks build
things and then charge for their use - after all, that's what I do for a living. I suspect that if CF were to become
more free I would have to charge less and make less because it would be perceived differently. I'm not interested in
giving the gift of CF to the world - there are probably other things more deserving my charity. I'm more interested
early retirement (hehe).

Subject: RE: Message board / forums

What would be the best way to structure a db for the
discussion topics and responses... Assuming I am using sql server?

It kind of depends on what you want to end up with. To me the main question
is whether or not you want threaded replies (my preference) or flat topic
replies (as it seems most every forum is lately).

The latter is by far easier. You would have, perhaps, a table of forums
(topic groups), a table of topics and then a table of messages. Each
message would be linked to a topic and each topic to a forum. Displaying
messages would be as easy as selecting all messages keyed to the topic and
displaying them in reverse chronological order.

You can get more complex than that of course, but that's it in a nutshell.
Basically each discussion is just a stack of messages.

To do threaded discussion you have several options. I think that the most
common way to do this is for each message to remember the ID of it's
parent (if it's a reply) - this is the parent/child model. Then you can
recursively (probably using Queries of Queries is easiest/fastest here)
display the messages.

Another option is nested set based design where you defining the groupings
(nestings) of your messages. This is confusing to a lot of people but has
the advantage of maintaining order better than parent child and can be done
with faster, simpler SQL once you get your mind around the model. However
it's not as simple to maintain (add messages to the middle, delete messages,
etc).

Both of these are tree models and you'll get a lot of action if you search
Google for SQL Trees. Determining how you'd like to walk you trees is
probably the more fundamental core of your design.

Another thing to keep in mind is how you want to identify your messages.
For example using an Identity (autonumber) is probably easiest but could
make it hard to copy/syndicate your messages to other installations of the
same software. A GUID takes up a LOT more room in the database but can
allow you to mix topics from multiple databases much easier.

There's still a lot more... it's a REALLY big topic.

Free as in the following...

the forum will be on a site that is a non for profit.. its a club website.
Basically the forum is the site. In addition i would like to add features
and mods to it...
Im working on one myself now but its my first one so it will take awhile. I
thought maybe I could avoid building one if a scalable one was available for
free.

We also have implemented Snitz...it rules comparable to other popular php

Other option we are upgrading to is Fusetalk (www.fusetalk.com). For only
$289 for the entry level, what a frekin deal.

All depends on long term client needs.

I suppose that stands for Bulletin Board Markup Language?

Yes, 100% mine although ive seen plenty of message boards that use the
brackets around text to identify something like an image or a html tag

I see youve signed up so youve probably seen the post form. the buttons that
are there are the tags that are allowed, plus the smiley faces
everything else displays as text, attempted script postings are laughed at
and made fun of publicly... (i couldnt resist)

most important keeping newly replied to posts and threads at the top
and believe it or not smiley faces

i left those out to start with but i was bombarded with posts and emails
demanding smileys and avatar images. some things never get old to some
people

password retrieval, personal profile editing... the list goes on
this one is fairly new and still growing.

feel free to grab the js code to insert text onclick

the output is simple enough

replace(message, [b], b, ALL)
replace(message, [lol], img src=images/lol.gif, ALL)

#message#

I've shown this to a couple others and they both said, Why not just do your
replace when you insert the message into the database

trust me, enter it into the database just like you see it in the form field.
you'll just end up screwing yourself when you decide to create the ability
for users to Edit their own posts.

if you want to know anything else about it specifically, let me know

Thanks.

I've been down this road before actually. I began a forums project long
ago, but never finished. I did finish the BBML parser however:

http://www.depressedpress.com/DepressedPress/Content/ColdFusion/CustomTags/D
P_ParseBBML/Index.cfm

I'm actually quite proud of it, but I've never actually used it myself. ;^)
Feature rich, produces valid HTML and has tons of tag support.

I'd like to do a new version, possibly as a CFC, that adds some
componentization ability (I'm dreaming of a system that makes it easy for
people to add their own tags and set the output style and such).

Another thing that's been requested a lot is more language support for the

tag (right now it's rather web/CFML specific). I'd like
people to be able to add their own color-coding libraries.

However since I've never used it myself I've never built an interface for it
either... something that you've obviously spent some time on. Yet another
thing I'd like to do.

Some many things on my plate and nothing to eat!

Re: Message Board

2002-12-02 Thread James Smith
Before I start tearing my hair out does anyone know if both (or either) of
these work with MX?

The CFBB site says it requires MX SP1 which shouldn't be a problem (but has
anyone tried it)?
The SMB page doesn't mention MX at all.

Re: Message board question

2002-02-10 Thread Tony Schreiber

You could have separate datasources, but you could also extend the
heirarchy one more step. For example: message - thread - forum - group
AND NOW - site. So the index of each forum needs a site id and everything
falls from there. It depends on how integrated you want the forums to be.
This way, you'd only need one registration across all sites.

This is probably easy, but it eluding me. I have a message board that I
want to set up to handle multiple websites residing on the same server.
Each site would be able to have their own topics, sub-topics etc. How
can I handle this? I have a siteID in my tables, but not sure how I
should work it. Should I just set it up to where aach DSN would be different and
just modify the cfset request.site.dsn=
datasourceName

There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and [Unix]
BSD. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.

RE: Message Board Threads confusion

2001-09-07 Thread James Maltby

Hi - you need to get your head around topics, threads and posts matey

Topics are the top level - e.g. ColdFusion.
Threads are the conversations - e.g. Writing a message board in ColdFusion
Posts are the messages based around the thread - e.g. Message Board Thread
confusion

If you ID the topic - e.g. T1
Then ID the Thread - e.g. TH1
Then ID the Posts - e.g. P1

You can create a unique key for each post - e.g. T1Th1P1
Then you can create an mapping to each post - e.g. T1Th1P2 - is in the same
topic and thread as T1Th1P1

So, in answer to your question - each person who responds to TH1 IS in the
same thread, but there subject posts should be grouped by P1, P2, P3, etc...

I think!!! :)

2001-09-07 Thread Thomas Chiverton

If you take the message structure as a tree, a thread is the path from one
message to one of its parents (father, grand father etc).
Taken the other way, its all the childen (and their children) of a specifc
post.

Weather you allow subject changes to mean a new thread starts or not is a
design question :-)

RE: Message Board Threads confusion

2001-09-07 Thread Billy Cravens

You can either have a single-dimensioned thread (like a mailing list) or
you could go infinite with your threading. Best way to manage it is in
your database. Something like:

Messages table
--
msgText
Parentid
Msgid

Here's some sample data:

|msgID|msgText|Parentid|
|-|---||
|1|test1 |0 |
|-|---||
|2|test2 |1 |
|-|---||
|3|test3 |2 |
|-|---||

Test1 is a top level message (no parent), test2 is a reply to test1, and
test3 is a reply to test2

A Thread on a message board is generally considered as one post, and all
the responses to that post (As I understand it). I would think something
along the lines of...

100 (Message number, first post in a thread)
100.1 - First reply
100.2 - Second Reply
100.2.1 - First reply to second reply
100.2.1.1 - Next sub reply
100.2.2 - Second reply to second reply
100.3 - Third reply

Maybe something like that?

With regards to flat-file message boards, I use UBB on a high-traffic site
(3700+ members, 100k+ messages, 6mil+ hits/mo) and it stinks.

I honestly cannot vouch for the scalability of SMB because I haven't been
able to deploy it like that yet (though, my goal is to replace the UBB
installation mentioned above), but I wrote it to be fast in the first
place...

I'd love to hear from anyone who has, or is planning to however...

Does any one know of a Cold fusion message board??? I need something
simple, without a lot of bells and whistlesjust the usual...topic,
info, etc...

I don't have a large budget, so a low cost solution or shareware (and
free always works too, ) would be helpful.

Thanks,

Jeffrey Cohen

If that's fine, I'll send the code to you for free. That's just the good

RE: Message Board

2000-10-10 Thread Jeremy Toevs

Dennis,

Thanks for the help. That looks great. Can you go ahead and send me the code.

Jeremy

"DSJ" 10/10/00 03:37PM
Hey Jeremy,

Take a look at the message board up on my site at http://www.thebrewhut.com.
If that's fine, I'll send the code to you for free. That's just the good
'ol simple forum sample app that they use to ship with CF 3.x, which they no
longer do.

Let me know.

Thanks!

Dennis

Re: Message Board

2000-10-10 Thread Vincent

hi,
funnie you should ask, Im in the process of making one ...
cause I realized that working with CF_forums at some point
gives errors of various sorts.

The one that Im making is relatively simple ... and kinda follows the
concept that ebay is using...
