[Chevelle-List] POR-15
I'm thinking of coating the undercarriage of the car with POR 15. Re: [Chevelle-List] POR-15
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Considered painting the undercarriage of my 71 with POR-15, but changed my mind when I got it clean. Did clean, prep and paint the frame with their products. Very nasty work if its just on jack stands. POR-15 likes a rough or rusty surface. If it not, it will not work as well. The metal prep will etch the surface. Would recommend the whole process. ..Denny - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Chevelle-List] Magnaflow x-pipe
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I asked a friend of mine about the Magnaflow x-pipe; he was considering it for his '74 Super Duty T/A but wound up using the Dr. Gas version instead. Apparently the Magnaflow pipe is constructed by welding 2 x-shaped halves together and this allows the internal crossover to be easily shaped. His reply is below. Brad PS He lives in Arkansas so Critter is a perfectly acceptable nickname. ;^) Long story short, I couldn't find any users of the Magnaflow and I didn't want to be the one to test it. The design appears to be sound. The stamped halves would be a smoother transition than two 90 degree bends with holes cut in the welded area. I'd have tried it but I just didn't have the money to do it twice if I wasn't happy. Thus the decision to go with a proven performer. Re: [Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Speaking of mounting balancing, I have at times taken some used tires and mounted them myself on rims I have lying around. I have a tire mount machine in my garage. I did this when I ran the 70 and my 86 Cutlass at the track. I drove the car there and home, and even to work a few days b/c I didn't have time to change them. I never had a problem with vibration. All i did was remove all the weights that were on the rim, mount the tire, air it up, put it on the car, and race all night. No vibrations upward of 120 mph (trap speed was actually 113 mph) on the chevelle. I've mounted I say about 10 pairs (20 total tires) in my garage without having them balanced. Re: [Chevelle-List] Aftermarket interior no good?
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List From what I understand, there are only two companies making the basic door panels, PUI and Distinctive. From what I've seen and also been told by others, the PUI panels (and seat covers) are a bit more puffy than stock... meaning they have more padding behind the vinyl. We sell the Distinctive line and use them in our restorations. We have been very pleased with them. Distinctive only manufactures the basic panels. We have another company that puts them together to make the fully assembled versions (with the top rail, inner window felt, chrome lock knob ferrule, and chrome moldings, if applicable). We used a set of these on our 69 El Camino SS, and they look great! We're in California, and like John with the Old Car Network on the east coast, we also have great prices on quality parts. My I suggest you give either John or myself a try before you decide to buy from one of the big guys? You'll likely get as good or better products with better prices and service. We can also put together a package price, if you need an entire interior kit. Re: [Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing
I just got back from a trip to the local BFGoodrich dealer. He said there was so many weights they were counter-balancing each other. They took all the weights off, respun the tires and added much fewer weights. Riding ok so far, so hope that'll do the trick, but the balancing is tested only up to 55-60MPH. The real test will be when I get it back on the Jersey Turnpike on Monday.
Re: [Chevelle-List] POR-15
Just keep in mind the POR15 needs to be applied to bare metal. You won't gain much by painting over anything else. The POR15 actually bonds to the metal, and it does seem to like some surface rust. If the metal is clean and bare, you'll need to etch it with the Metal-Ready, which is a form of boric acid. (with some other stuff in it). They have a truck trailer and will pick up and drop off vehicles (for a fee, of course). They even drove 300 miles each way to pick up mine. Please consider them if you are restoring a car. Call (814) 623-2584 or email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please tell them that you heard it from me. I hope to be bringing the El Camino to some shows this summer, so you northeasterners can check it out in person. Once I get it back from Ron it will need exhaust work, tires, and a few other things, so hopefully it will be on the road some time this summer. [Chevelle-List] Alumninuminumeum radiators vs copper vs ?
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Hey dudes and dudettes ( former California boy - can you tell? ) Uhh I think I keep reading rumblings that aluminum radiators are better than the old copper radiators. Well I wish someone would tell me why. Copper is a better conductor...of electricity anyway. AND if you ever look at old air conditioners that don't drain well, you see that aluminum corrodes if it sits in water a long time. This don't sound too great for a radiator since it will constantly have water in it. I will have a big block, and of there's one thing I hate it's overheating! So I want to do everything I can to prevent overheatingwithin reason. Reasonable cost, reasonable longevity, etc. I have a 3 core copper radiator in there now, but I understand you can have them re-cored to put in a 4 core? Would 5 be better and could it be done? Also, I am wondering what kind of water pump you would put on for high volume / long lasting / reliablility. Right now I plan on using a Dex or Dex compatible / no water solution. What the heck is everyone else doing to keep the big blocks cool? - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Chevelle-List] The X pipe
Hey Larry; I have built several X pipe exhaust systems for different cars. I have gotten mandrel bends from Hooker headers, andwelded custom mandrel bend exhaust systems. They are the best! I read a article that the"H" pipe was devolopedfor theHemi engines but lose effectiveness over thirteen inchs in length. The X pipe is that much better, it is the best possible H pipe in a manner of speaking. The reason why is:If you think about a Chevy firing order, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, on the leftside 5 and 7 fire oneright after another, and on the right bank 8 and 4 fire one right after another. This causes a BIG increase in exhaust pressure onfor a short peroid. The X pipe divides the pressure evenly between the two mufflers. You can here that the exhaust is quieter and smoother. It also makes a noticeable increase in HP, even on a stocker. I am sure as the power goes up the improvement is more dramatic. Re: [Chevelle-List] Alumninuminumeum radiators vs copper vs ?
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List That's true that flowing water through a radiator may not leave it in the radiator long enough to cool it. For example the lower pulley on an air conditioned car is smaller to slow down the water pump. For circle track racing I have taken a water pump apart and ground down the impellers, we even welded a washer in the thermostat housing to restrict water flow. You can't do all of these things on one car but the point is you may have to experiment to make your radiator as efficient as possible Dave Hammer 67 SS - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Chevelle-List] Alumninuminumeum radiators vs copper vs ?
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List not propaganad! VERY true most commonly experenced when thermostat is removed. a radiator is a heat exchanger, if ya pump the water through it tooo fast it wont have enough time to transfer heat,Also, your rad cap is designed ta handle 12-17lbs of pressure, depending on appilication, your water pump produces more than this for the simple fact that for every 2pounds of pressure you have in your cooling system you raise the boiling point of water 1 degree[boiling causes steam pockets and serious damage can result]the secondary purpose of a thermostat is ta maintain the presurepoint in the block where its needed. With out a thermostat the pressure point moves to the rad cap which cant contain it, you lose water, you get steam pockets, you over-heat, you kill motor SIMPLE STUFF WHEN YOURE AWARE OF THE WAY CLOSED SYSTEMS ARE DESIGNED TA WORK.
