opinion on re-chroming kits. The is a site here called Caswell Inc .com (

ever did re-chroming on a personal level and what results were acheived. Have

As a former Good Year tire buster, if a tire balance required that much
weight, we would bust the tire down - rotate it a 1/4 turn and try the spin
balance again. We also did this for guys buying High Performance tires and
wanting to travel at high speeds. Some tires took no weights with this
trill and error method.

Considered painting the undercarriage of my 71 with POR-15, but changed my mind when I
got it clean. Did clean, prep and paint the frame with their products. Very nasty
work if it’s just on jack stands. POR-15 likes a rough or rusty surface. If it not,
it will not work as well. The metal prep will etch the surface. Would recommend the
whole process. ..Denny

[Chevelle-List] Magnaflow x-pipe

2002-02-08 Thread bdo_chevelle

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

I asked a friend of mine about the Magnaflow x-pipe; he
was considering it for his '74 Super Duty T/A but wound
up using the Dr. Gas version instead. Apparently the
Magnaflow pipe is constructed by welding 2 x-shaped
halves together and this allows the internal crossover
to be easily shaped. His reply is below.

Brad

PS He lives in Arkansas so Critter is a perfectly
acceptable nickname. ;^)

Long story short, I couldn't find any users of the Magnaflow
and I didn't want to be the one to test it.

The design appears to be sound. The stamped halves would be a smoother
transition than two 90 degree bends with holes cut in the welded area. I'd
have tried it but I just didn't have the money to do it twice if I wasn't
happy. Thus the decision to go with a proven performer.

Speaking of mounting balancing, I have at times taken some used tires and
mounted them myself on rims I have lying around. I have a tire mount machine
in my garage. I did this when I ran the 70 and my 86 Cutlass at the track.
I drove the car there and home, and even to work a few days b/c I didn't have
time to change them. I never had a problem with vibration. All i did was
remove all the weights that were on the rim, mount the tire, air it up, put
it on the car, and race all night. No vibrations upward of 120 mph (trap
speed was actually 113 mph) on the chevelle. I've mounted I say about 10
pairs (20 total tires) in my garage without having them balanced.

The POR sticks best to slightly rusted surfaces,If your metal is
clean, the metal-prep will help adhesion. Otherwise I used general
cleaners that I had available. Be sure to read all of the literature
that you get from them. You don't want to get any of it on your face

From what I understand, there are only two companies making the basic door
panels, PUI and Distinctive. From what I've seen and also been told by
others, the PUI panels (and seat covers) are a bit more puffy than stock...
meaning they have more padding behind the vinyl. We sell the Distinctive
line and use them in our restorations. We have been very pleased with them.
Distinctive only manufactures the basic panels. We have another company that
puts them together to make the fully assembled versions (with the top rail,
inner window felt, chrome lock knob ferrule, and chrome moldings, if
applicable). We used a set of these on our 69 El Camino SS, and they look
great!
We're in California, and like John with the Old Car Network on the east
coast, we also have great prices on quality parts. My I suggest you give
either John or myself a try before you decide to buy from one of the big
guys? You'll likely get as good or better products with better prices and
service. We can also put together a package price, if you need an entire
interior kit.

John,

If you don't mind a little road trip there are two places here in PA that
you might consider first. North East Chevelle is in Hazleton, PA and Lehigh
Valley Chevelle Parts in Bethlehem, PA. I have bought parts from both and
the reason I recommend them is because I think it's better to see the
part(s) your interested in before it comes to your house. I prefer to go and
look at the quality of parts that way I know it is exactly what I want. If
you are interested and need more information just email me off list and I'll
get you the addresses and/or directions.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing

2002-02-08 Thread GSawn
I just got back from a trip to the local BFGoodrich dealer. He said there was so many weights they were counter-balancing each other. They took all the weights off, respun the tires and added much fewer weights. Riding ok so far, so hope that'll do the trick, but the balancing is tested only up to 55-60MPH. The real test will be when I get it back on the Jersey Turnpike on Monday.

2002-02-08 Thread Michael Pell

Just keep in mind the POR15 needs to be applied to bare metal. You won't
gain much by painting over anything else. The POR15 actually bonds to the
metal, and it does seem to like some surface rust.

If the metal is clean and bare, you'll need to etch it with the Metal-Ready,
which is a form of boric acid. (with some other stuff in it).

I'm wondering how many people out there actually drive their chevelle in the winter (i.e. salt,snow,etc...).

I'm looking to buy a daily driver, I'd like to get a chevelle but I know I'll be driving it in the winter.

Is there any way you can protect a car from winter driving?

Or how about other recommendations for DD's, I wouldn't mind letting the salt eat away at a F*rd.

Well, my 69 El Camino will be started very soon. I just got word today. So,
I thought I would seize the opportunity to plug Miller Woy Restorations.

Ron Miller Chris Woy only do restorations. No fender-bender late-model
work. Ron sold a 1964 Olds Ninety Eight convertible at Carlisle last year
for $24k. Ron's own 1957 Olds 88 has won over two hundred trophies. Their
work is excellent. They are located in Bedford PA. They have a truck
trailer and will pick up and drop off vehicles (for a fee, of course). They
even drove 300 miles each way to pick up mine. Please consider them if you
are restoring a car. Call (814) 623-2584 or email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please tell
them that you heard it from me.

I hope to be bringing the El Camino to some shows this summer, so you
northeasterners can check it out in person. Once I get it back from Ron it
will need exhaust work, tires, and a few other things, so hopefully it will
be on the road some time this summer. The before pictures are at

[Chevelle-List] Alumninuminumeum radiators vs copper vs ?

2002-02-08 Thread Cecil \Steve\ Martin

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Hey dudes and dudettes ( former California boy - can you tell? )

Uhh I think I keep reading rumblings that aluminum radiators
are better than the old copper radiators. Well I wish someone would tell me
why. Copper is a better conductor...of electricity anyway.

AND if you ever look at old air conditioners that don't drain well, you
see that aluminum corrodes if it sits in water a long time. This don't sound
too great for a radiator since it will constantly have water in it.

I will have a big block, and of there's one thing I hate it's overheating!
So I want to do everything I can to prevent overheatingwithin reason.
Reasonable cost, reasonable longevity, etc.

I have a 3 core copper radiator in there now, but I understand you can have
them re-cored to put in a 4 core? Would 5 be better and could it be done?

Also, I am wondering what kind of water pump you would put on for high
volume / long lasting / reliablility.

Right now I plan on using a Dex or Dex compatible / no water solution.

What the heck is everyone else doing to keep the big blocks cool?

Re: [Chevelle-List] The X pipe

2002-02-08 Thread Rob Thorburn

Hey Larry;
I have built several X pipe exhaust systems for
different cars. I have gotten mandrel bends from Hooker headers,
andwelded custom mandrel bend exhaust systems. They are the
best! I read a article that the"H" pipe was devolopedfor
theHemi engines but lose effectiveness over thirteen inchs in
length. The X pipe is that much better, it is the best possible H pipe in
a manner of speaking. The reason why is:If you think about a
Chevy firing order, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, on the leftside 5 and 7 fire
oneright after another, and on the right bank 8 and 4 fire one right after
another. This causes a BIG increase in exhaust pressure onfor a
short peroid. The X pipe divides the pressure evenly between the two
mufflers. You can here that the exhaust is quieter and smoother. It
also makes a noticeable increase in HP, even on a stocker. I am sure as
the power goes up the improvement is more dramatic.

I've got a 3 core, shroud, and regular steel flex fan. Don't have any
problems unless I get stuck in traffic with no air flow. Normal traffic or
highway it runs 185-195 tops. I did read somewhere where you can go
overboard on the number of cores and size in fact; it can actually have the
reverse desired effect. Same with some hi-flow water pumps, if the water
pumps through the engine/radiator too fast, it doesn't have time to cool.
Could have been propaganda - I'll do some research.

That's true that flowing water through a radiator may not leave it in the
radiator long enough to cool it. For example the lower pulley on an air
conditioned car is smaller to slow down the water pump. For circle track
racing I have taken a water pump apart and ground down the impellers, we even
welded a washer in the thermostat housing to restrict water flow. You can't
do all of these things on one car but the point is you may have to experiment
to make your radiator as efficient as possible

Hey dudes and dudettes ( former California boy - can you tell? )

Uhh I think I keep reading rumblings that aluminum radiators
are better than the old copper radiators. Well I wish someone would tell
me
why. Copper is a better conductor...of electricity anyway.

AND if you ever look at old air conditioners that don't drain well,
you
see that aluminum corrodes if it sits in water a long time. This don't
sound
too great for a radiator since it will constantly have water in it.

I will have a big block, and of there's one thing I hate it's overheating!
So I want to do everything I can to prevent overheatingwithin reason.
 Reasonable cost, reasonable longevity, etc.

I have a 3 core copper radiator in there now, but I understand you can
have
them re-cored to put in a 4 core? Would 5 be better and could it be done?

Also, I am wondering what kind of water pump you would put on for high
volume / long lasting / reliablility.

Right now I plan on using a Dex or Dex compatible / no water solution.

What the heck is everyone else doing to keep the big blocks cool?

not propaganad! VERY true most commonly experenced when thermostat
is removed.
a radiator is a heat exchanger, if ya pump the water through it tooo fast
it wont have enough time to transfer heat,Also, your rad cap is designed ta
handle 12-17lbs of pressure, depending on appilication, your water pump
produces more than this for the simple fact that for every 2pounds of
pressure you have in your cooling system you raise the boiling point of
water 1 degree[boiling causes steam pockets and serious damage can
result]the secondary purpose of a thermostat is ta maintain the
presurepoint in the block where its needed. With out a thermostat the
pressure point moves to the rad cap which cant contain it, you lose water,
you get steam pockets, you over-heat, you kill motor SIMPLE STUFF WHEN
YOURE AWARE OF THE WAY CLOSED SYSTEMS ARE DESIGNED TA WORK.

I've got a 3 core, shroud, and regular steel flex fan. Don't have any
problems unless I get stuck in traffic with no air flow. Normal traffic
or
highway it runs 185-195 tops. I did read somewhere where you can go
overboard on the number of cores and size in fact; it can actually have
the
reverse desired effect. Same with some hi-flow water pumps, if the
water
pumps through the engine/radiator too fast, it doesn't have time to cool.
Could have been propaganda - I'll do some research.
