Check your shifter seal. Mine "sweats" ever so slightly and it runs down to
the lip of the pan. A couple days after I clean everything it looks like the

Well, for the first time since purchase, I finally drove my El Camino today.
Granted, it was just a couple of laps around my friend Jack's back yard, but
it was a great feeling to see the thing move under it's own power for the
first time.

It goes, it stops, it even turns!

There are a couple of gremlins, that maybe you all can help out with:

I have replaced the tranny gasket twice and it still leaks. I used hi-temp
RTV only on the pan side the first time, and on both sides the second time.
What the F does it take to make one of these puppies not leak?

The backup lights come on when the shifter is between park & reverse. They
are off in either of those positions. Is there any adjustment for this?

Thanks,
John Nasta

My TH400 leaks after sitting for 3 days.  I have no clue as to where it is coming from.  It's not the pan, it's not the vacuum module, it's not the speedo cable housing, which by the way does have an O-ring sealing the gear itself inside the gear housing.  I had to replace one before.  I have come to believe that trannys either leak or they don't.  LIke what was said earlier.  The best way to stop it is to put a manual tranny in it :-).

Thanks Bill. Dye-checking is a good way to go. I'll look into that. I got
the transmission from a running 1970 Chevelle that a friend made an SS clone
from, and wanted a TH400 in place of the TH350 that I now have. It is quite
possible that it needs some re-sealing.

I've had the best luck with the NAPA brand gaskets, the ones that are NOT
cork. Don't use any RTV, but you could use a little weatherstrip adhesive
to hold the gasket to the pan if you want. Also, be sure that the bolt
holes in the pan aren't dimpled, if they are, use a a small hammer to tap
them back flat again, backing the flange up with a piece of steel under the
hole. Don't over torque the pan bolts, put some blue Loctite 242 on them,
and snug them up but don't crush the gasket.

Thanks Tom,

I have a
new neutral safety switch on order, so I'll look for those tables when I replace
it.

Right now I
have no speedo cable hooked up. The drip appears to be coming from the RF
corner of the (stock) pan, but that could just be where gravity is leading it
to before it finally drops. It is a very slow leak. Probably an ounce or two
per week when sitting, but it seemed to get worse after I ran it for a while
and then drove it, then put it back in the garage. I'll definitely check into
those O-rings.

BTW, I looked
at the photo you sent and I still didn’t figure out how to attach the rear
license plate lamp. I'll bring the picture with me next week, but I'm getting
the feeling that the holes are not pre-drilled on the reproduction bumper. There
is just nothing there to attach the lamp to. I sure wish Ron had returned my
original bumper so that I could see what's going on.

Congrats John.  There is still enough time to get it ready
for the MCC show in June :-).  About the reverse lights.  If the car
is column shift, the neutral safety switch and the revers light switch are one
in the same.  It is located on the bottom of the column.  There is a
tab that sits on another tab in the steering column.  That is adjustable
left to right.  I just had to adjust one on a 66 I am working on.

As for the tranny, if you have a chrome pan on it, ditch it and
put a stock aluminum one in it with a fel pro gasket.  Second on that,
have you checked all the O-ring seals on the outside of the tranny?  The
speedo cable gear, vacuum module, and the driveshaft seal.  Other things
that can leak on it are the tailshaft seal and front pump seal.  Good
luck!

I'll probably catch some flack from the pros out there, with $400.00 guns,
about the gun purchase but I just purchased a Sharpe Cobalt gravity feed
HVLP and I really like it. I have painted my firewall and inner fenders with
it and they turned out great. Even got a compliment from my paint guy. I
also just purchased a new respirator. It is a 3M model 6800 full face
respirator. I'm using a 6001 organic vapor cartridge with a pre filter. It
is what was advise by the 3M rep. I went with the full face for eye
protection and a second seal. The full face seals around the nose and mouth
and also around the face. Cobalt gun cost $116.00 at Tool Paradise.com.
Respirator $89.00 w/ a 6006 filter at probuy.com. Lens covers, 25 for $19.95
also probuy.com. Cartridges $10.95 for a pair of organic vapor (R6001) and
$9.95 for 6 pack of pre-filters (5P71-6) at unclejoes.com.

Don't use any RTV. Just a good quality cork gasket, install it dry, and don't
over-torque.
The root of the problem is that darned self-reproducing auto trans fluid. Not
only will it self-reproduce, it will seek out even the tiniest of cracks to seep
thru for eternity. The only solution is to switch to a manual. ;-

Congrats on the drive!

Craig,
The difference between the front and rear antenna on a 69 chevelle is
the
base. The slope of the fender is different and the base has a different
slope to compensate. I've seen front antennas on the rear of 69's they
just
angle different. Unfortunately if your going for a "correct" show car it
is
quite obvious. Also a true rear antenna has a shorter lead and a
straight
connect that an extension hooks to that runs the length of the car to
the
dash. I believe the correct 69 antenna (front or rear) is oval not
round.
Very hard to find and $$$. Rear is usually two to three arms and legs :)

  I
have the Dr. Gas X crossover on my El Camino and yes it does sound different,

few years back I had a '72 Corvette with a stock 350.  I added cheap
Blackjack headers and had a complete 3" exhaust built that used a Dr. Gas X
pipe and a pair of 3 chamber Flowmasters.  It sounded extremely different
from any Flowmaster equipped car I ever heard.  It had the typical
Flowmaster sound at idle, but once the rpm went up the pitch changed and the
trademark Flowmaster sound dissappeared.  I thought it sounded
so cool that I'd take out the back window whenever the weather was
good so I could hear it better while driving.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Antenna's

2003-11-02 Thread Trooper
Craig,
The difference between the front and rear antenna on a 69 chevelle is the
base. The slope of the fender is different and the base has a different
slope to compensate. I've seen front antennas on the rear of 69's they just
angle different. Unfortunately if your going for a "correct" show car it is
quite obvious. Also a true rear antenna has a shorter lead and a straight
connect that an extension hooks to that runs the length of the car to the
dash. I believe the correct 69 antenna (front or rear) is oval not round.
Very hard to find and $$$. Rear is usually two to three arms and legs :)

Can someone tell me the difference between a front antenna and rear. I
would like to install a rear antenna but not up to paying an arm and leg for
one. Are there any alternatives? Thanks.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 Stripes

2003-11-02 Thread Trooper
Joe,
They are a stripe that goes down the side from the front fender across the
door and to the back of the rear fender. Not the bold stripes across the
hood and trunk. There are actually three stripes (one bold and two
pinstripes coming to a point at front and rear). There are many pics at.
