RE: [Chevelle-list] camaro article - ignore

2005-04-27 Thread Dave Studly
Yeah, sometime color coding is not enough, at least in telecom stuff where
it's possible to have a hundred wires. Sometime it's impractical to try and
have leads for an ohmmeter at each end.

I've sort of wanted a tone generator for my 'work' toolbox but never had to
use one enough to justify it. I never really thought about using it for car
wiring. Maybe I can justify one now. :-)

Uncrunk? Apostrophe D? Man this is confusing stuff...

Thanks Dave. I guess when color-coding is not enough, you can always tone.
Why not use an ohmmeter?

Hey Dave knew what I was talking about! I figured everyone toned (tone'd,

In telecom and networking, 'toning' a wire can be used to identify ends of
wires in multi-wire cabling. A signal generator is hooked to one end, and a
probe is used to pickup the signal at the other end, resulting in a
repeating tone being generated from the signal.

[Chevelle-list] removing paint from plastic

2005-04-27 Thread Bow Tie
This is from Team Chevelle

P._. : The interior of my 1967 has been repainted
once. Most of the interior plastic pieces were
repainted. My primary concern is the console because
it has already been repainted once. The grain is not
as pronounced as it was originally, and I am concerned
that it will be noticeably less so after painting it
again. Besides that, I have already run into problems
repainting the metal pieces because the repainting was
with enamel and not lacquer. I had paint wrinkling
problems even after priming over the old finish. I am
concerned that I will run into the same problem on the
console, so I would like to strip it first if
possible.

D._. : Easy Off Oven Cleaner is what a lot of model
car guys use, so it should work. You may want to use
spray dye instead of paint on the plastic parts. I
used dye on my plastic kick panels. The dye soaks in
better and makes it look like it was molded in that
color and not painted.

J.S. : Conventional paint strippers used in auto
paint processes will ruin most plastics. There are a
few dry strippers on the market that can be used on
plastics, but they may also deteriorate the integrity
of the plastic. I have used Dow as well as Easy Off
oven cleaners to remove paint from plastics. Both
products work extremely well. Be sure to wear the
latex gloves since these products are tough on the
skin. Spray on an ample amount of foam and the paint
tends to melt away. Use soapy hot water with a
Scotch-Brite pad to get the paint completely out of
the grain. Let the console air dry for at least a week
and then begin the re-paint process.

hook to certain levers on the heat/air box. My

Are you talking about the rivets that are welded to the body to hold the
molding clips? I went to the hardware store bought small stainless steel
screws, drilled a hole where the rivet had been, and screwed the clip back
on. That's what my glass guy said to do.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Z16

2005-04-27 Thread Dale
Well, I guess there are two that claim to be the 'first' prototype. An old
Year One catalog has an article on what they claim is the first prototype
but there's no vinyl top. Year One also claims, This car has been fully
documented by Chevrolet as the original 'Tech Car' prototype, and as the
first car built has many unusual features (even more unusual than most
Z-16s). At the time of the article it was owned by Floyd Garrett.

Stranger yet is Terry Gunter (sp?) had (advertised) Z-16 #2 at Nashville in
2003 (http://www.chevellestuff.com/65velle/gallery/prototype_z16.jpg)
complete with the Baltimore body tag - the prototypes were built at
Baltimore and production models at KC.

Hmmm... A claim of 201 Z-16s including 1 convertible never found. Makes one
wonder if 201 was the total 'production' run or did it include any of the 3
claimed prototypes?

My 67 AIM also shows the front emblem
placement with reference to 0/0 lines. Check a little further in the
manual for a page SHEET METAL CHECKING. Mine was sheet B12
in UPC 11-13 and looks like this: http://www.chevelleinfo.com/body/emblems/sheet_metal_checking_side.jpg
The 0 horizontal line is 3.52 below the base of the fender/body
and the 0 vertical line is, oddly, 38.92 back from the center-line of
the radiator core support.

My suggestion is to find some wheels with more
backspacing. You really need around 4.5" to run a 265 or 275 tire without
worrying about clearance problems.

Re: [Chevelle-list] RE: VIN database idea?

2005-04-27 Thread Ryan Langstraat
Dale,
I think the VIN list is a great idea. Two weeks ago at a local cruise in
the guy parked next to me (1970 GTO Judge ) told me that it was his brand
new then sold so his wife wouldnt get it in the divorce. Some how by the
grace of god 20 year after he sold it, he found it and bought it. It was
all broke down and had been in an accident. He restored it to match his
pictures of it. Let me tell you this is possibly the nicest restore I
have ever seen.

Ok, back to the point. The list is a great idea and I would be willing to
participate. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Ryan.
Also, does anyone have a set of the rear supports for a 68 SS. I dont know
what they are called for sure but they look like the upper control arms but
mount in front of the differential.

Now,there's a strange combination if there ever was
one. 15x10 wheels with 3.5" backspacing is a recipe for mucho clearance
problems.
A 245 tire on a 10" rim is probably unsafe and
would look pretty silly.
