[Chevelle-list] Newbie - Question regarding restification sequence

2005-11-01 Thread Ringlein Thomas J Capt 40 ELRF/CC

Folks-

I am new to Team Chevelle - as of this morning in
fact.  I have owned my Chevelle since 1987, through High School, College,
and beyond.  I am active duty Air Force, and have an assignment to Fresno California pending for
April 2006.  Finally, I am in a position to retrieve my car from my father's
house in central California and dive into a rectification -
but need a bit of help.

I am fairly mechanically inclined, but have never
disassembled a car before.  I want to do a complete frame-off rectification,
complete with powder coat to the frame, brake and power train upgrades, the
full works.  But is there a publication or book that outlines the best
sequence of events for a successful frame-off rectification?  I already
have an assembly manual, and have nearly read it cover to cover.  I have a
positive attitude, and fairly decent budget, and 3 years to complete the
project.  In order not to mess things up too bad, and make the road to
success more smooth, I am just looking for a "playbook."  Does
one exist?

I would not run car oil in a motorcycle, due
to its lack of anti-shear additives such as zinc, etc. These additives are not
used in automotive oil because they will damage catalytic

synthetic.
I ran Amsoil in my aircraft and liked it

Re: [Chevelle-list] Good enough for POR15?

2005-11-01 Thread malibu

I've used POR on some test metal (an old car
out in the field), I lightly brushed it with a steel brush, then put on the
POR-15.  The metal was VERY rusty.  Two years later out in the weather
it looked more or less the same.  The POR had changed colors, but was still
there.  I've also applied the POR Patch to Paper Towels, then filled over
rust holes for a temporary measure.  It acted like thin sheets of fiber
glass when done.  It lasted for years (so much for temporary, LOL).
If you aren't a stickler for 100% perfect, just use the POR-15 patch, and some
paper towels, then POR the rest of the roof, and you'll be ok for years.
Probably longer than most people keep interest in an old car.

Pelle, POR 15 is not designed for use on smooth metal. It needs some texture
for good adhesion. POR stands for paint over rust.

Pelle,

You might want to get some Metal Ready from the same company. It will prep
your floor for the POR15. See below for product info.

Larry

Our simple one-step process gently etches metal, creating an ideal anchor
pattern for coatings such as POR-15®, while simultaneously leaving a zinc
phosphate film to promote chemical bonding of paint and steel. Avoid other
preps that may leave harmful residues that prevent proper adhesion of
POR-15® or other coatings.

After thoroughly degreasing your work piece, apply environmentally safe,
METAL READYT to both neutralize any rust and etch any clean bare metal.
This

will allow better adhesion of POR-15® or any paint. METAL READYT is not
caustic, corrosive, toxic or flammable.

Good article Bill. I guess I should switch back to green for the El Camino.
It definitely does not have an aluminum radiator.

It definitely turns into sludge if you mix orange & green.

The orange is supposed to be 100,000 mile antifreeze it comes in most all
your newer cars. I have a 2000 Impala and it had the dex.cool (the orange)
in it and the dex cool turned to a sludgy type stuff. And also it started to
turn the low coolant light on. I had it flushed and put the regular green
antifreeze in it and it runs about 20 deg. cooler in the summer .The low
coolant light has never came on since.By the way my Impala had only 40,000
miles on it when the antifreeze looked like sludge.

John, The orange was formulated to GM specs and is recommended by GM for
late model engines. It has Dex Cool which I believe is similar to water
wetter and supposed to cool somewhat better than the green. I have been told
not to mix them. I have been using the orange in my old cars for years
without problems. I have not heard of or had the problems Gene mentioned,
but I can't say that the Or. is any better or worst than standard green anti
freeze. It mainly ended up in my cars for consistancy purposes.

more traction. I can't go inside with a wider rim to any extent. I am
considering going to a 4 link set up w/ coil overs and a slight tub with
15s at about 10 to 12 inches wide. This a street car. I will keep my 12

the frame other than brackets and cross members where necessary. Do any

2005-11-01 Thread Mumper, Douglas

Larry,  I bought the
short block from a friend I completely torn it down I used the pistons, rods,
and crank.  I had the internal parts balanced and the pistons fly cut to
get compression down to 10.5 to 1.  I had the crank with harmonic balancer
and flex plate spun balanced, that a lone cost me $300.  I put all new
bearings in motor.  I had to buy all new parts ,I went w/ a trick flow kit
from Summit it gives you alm. heads, hdy. roller cam, roller rockers arp head
bolts, gasket set, timing chain and more.  Summit owns trick flow they are
just down the street from summit.   It run good after I got it broke
in, the biggest problem I had with a 750 speed demon carb. that I went
with!!  it ran very rich from the beginning.  The mixture screws would
work the opposite way they should work!!   As I turned them in the higher
the idle and vacuum would go!!!  I called demon carb many times, after a
lot of work I finally put new jets in 2 numbers smaller all four of them and new
power valve!!   mixture screws still work the same but now plugs are
tan or brown, they were very black!!   I have what looks like a stock
radiator I had problems w/ it over heating this summer.  I put in a 160
degree thermostat when I first started it, it stuck this summer I got up to 230
degrees w/ alm. heads (not good)   I took it out and through it a
way!!!  I took a old one and took the guts and spring out, so it is a
restrictor now.  worked good the rest of summer until I went to car show in
Frankenmuth Michigan about 85 degrees and stop and go traffic it went back to
210 - 230 degrees!!  I have to buy a alm. radiator this this winter, so now
as you can see the 400 SB is noted for over heating!!  The good part is the
trick flow kit I bought is dyned for 465 horsepower, the  car does run good
after I got carb. right and that's w/ a 3:08 non posi.  if you have more
questions e-mail off list at   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hope this helps!!    P.S.  I finally got about 400 miles on
engine, its put away

Re: [Chevelle-list] Synthetic Oil

2005-11-01 Thread Craig Ellis

For what it's worth, a few years
ago Consumers Reports did an extensive analysis of oil in a fleet of 60 New York
taxicabs and ran them 60,000 miles tearing the motors down and rebuilding before
and after. Their conclusion: Change every 6k and any ordinary 10w30 oil does
just fine. The benefits from Mobil One changed at either 15k or 6k miles were
unmeasureable and the benefits of changing Mobil One at 3000 mile intervals
were wildly exceeded by the cost of the oil and filter. The exception: severe
duty such as desert, construction jobsites, continuous trailer towing, etc.

For many years I've used Valvoline
10/30 and a good quality ($6) filter and changed every 4k in my pickup and 5k in
my wife's minivan. I change the Chevelle once each fall before laying it up
because I never rack up more than three or four thousands miles on
it.

Also, for you motorcycle guys,
Motorcycle Consumer News did a chemical analysis of oils a year or two ago that
concluded much the same thing - any good quality oil is so good that comparisons
do not yield measureable results. The quality of all oil has improved more in
the last ten years than in the previous 100 years and ANY oil made in the last
few years is better than the very best made in 1990. Technology has moved on.
Provided you use the correct oil for your clutch system, any oil is
excellent.

Finally, HotRod magazine did a
comparo of air filters last year - don't know if anyone caught it - but their
conclusion: The high end "K&N" $30 filters did no better than a $4 Fram from
Autozone in either filtration or ability to "pass gas".

For what it's worth, my BIL is an
"A&P" (Airframe & Powerplant) mechanic. He uses Amsoil, changes it every
15k with a filter change every 7500.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on
breaking in your freshly rebuilt engine using synthetic
oil...

Also, if you use synthetic oil in
your daily driver or Chevelle, what brand and viscosity do you
use?

Thanks,

Go to ebay, put "swivel bucket seats" in quotes
select the box for searching title and description and search. Then
create a robot. It'll be a matter of weeks before one appears.

HP's help service is where I have a big bone to pick with them. They moved
it to India and the folks are a pain to deal with. You have to call, and
call, and calland then you still won't have your problem resolved! My

Having same problem with new HP printer of feeding too many sheets at one
time and "hanging" up. This is the first time I have had any problem with
HP. I worked as computer tech/repair as side job for last 28 years. Also,
just found out that HP now says to use sponge tip and water to clean print
head. NO SOLVENT so they say. I have decided that you can get good and bad
with any brand these days. John

RE: [Chevelle-list] OT: printer notes - hope this is useful

2005-11-01 Thread Dan Mascheck

I have been an avid photographer since I worked at Texas A&M Experiment Station(1973-1978).
At the time I liked Macro and Micro photography and did a fair bit of aerial
infra red photography of the Ag Experiment Station I worked at. Hence the older
Nikon. I have an old ring flash I haven’t used in years.

I thought about selling my Nikon and all the lenses, but you get so
little for them. I also have a Canon AE-1 with auto-winder. At present I use a
8 megapixel Sony. I’m hooked on digital. I can correct, edit and send via
email. Most of the stuff I have done lately is my two grandsons.

I plan on upgrading my digital again. Maybe Canon or Nikon. Canon has a
14 megapixel camera I would love to have, but….it’s a bit too much,
when I could put the extra bucks into my 72. I also use a tiny Sony Digital
video camera.

Hasselblad is as good as they come!! I’m a bit jealous!(GRIN) 50mm
is a heck of a medium!

My next phase on my car is new front suspension, disc brakes, and
deciding whether to keep my 15” wheels or move up to 17’s”.
If I do, I’ll need all the cash I have, plus I want to get it painted…..All
I need is a bucket of Money!!(GRIN)

Oh..none of my shots are on the web. I have 2-300 gig hard drives for
storage and two 300’s for external backup. I build my own computers about
every 3 to 4 years, from the best parts available at the time.

Dan, are any of your shots on the web? I
rarely shoot 35mm, but I do have a D100 as well as a few N90S's and of course a
bunch of lenses. Most of my work is w/ Hasselblad or 4x5. Interesting to know
that other list members are also photographers.

Looks like a good project Dave.On your website, the
70 you painted, what color red is it? I am redoing my 71 convt this winter and am
looking at reds...I am leaning towards a 05 Corvette metallic red with lite gray
real flame ghost flames. Also I am collecting parts to switch the auto over to a

2005-11-01 Thread Harleyguy440

I had an Epson photo 820 that printed great pictures when it would print.
Unfortunately if it sat idle for more than a week the jets or something would
plug and the photo would come out with lines through them, etc. Using the head
cleaning utility on the printer used up ink and I found myself having to do this
each time I wanted to print a photo. I got sick of that routine and bought an HP
Photosmart 7760 and I've had great luck with it so far. Too bad about the Epson
because it printed excellent pictures when it would work properly, I just
couldn't see using up all my ink on a nozzle cleaning
utility.
