RE: [Chevelle-list] Power Tour

2005-12-05 Thread Daniel De Smet
If you want to go on the power tour, you would register with Family Events.  They do have a hotel registration if you dont want to find them yourself, BUT, you can do it much cheaper by doing a little research and making your own reservations.  This will be my third year and second Long Haul.  If you would like any more information, please feel free to e-mail me with questions and I will answer them as best as I can.

What are you all doing to protect your Chevelle while out and about?

Fuel shut-offs?

You pretty much got it.  Everyone with a Chevelle needs to experience
Chevellabration, it's more like a 3 day party.  Very laid back atmosphere,
great people, great cars.

Ditto.  I don't care what it takes, no one is taking my car and
getting away with it.  When I drive down to Nashville alone for
Chevellabration, I'm carrying and there are quite a few others that do this as
well.  I never worry about anything when at Chevellabration, only the way
there and the way home.

Here's another interesting story, which broke here in northeastern WI
recently. It's been written up in Old Cars Weekly (published in central WI), so
I guess the story must be basically true.

Apparently an old gentleman passed away, and his heirs found 20-some semi
trailers with the doors welded shut. When they broke them open, they found quite
a treasure trove of vintage Chevy iron.

Yes, you have to make all your own hotel reservations, all they do really
is provide the route and the venue for each stop.  I am thinking of going
on Power Tour this coming year myself.  It starts in Florida and ends
essentially in my back yard so it would work out nicely.

A 9" has a larger ring gear than a 12 bolt, 9" vs. 8.875, not much
difference. The big advantage to the 9" is that you can change the ring and
pinion as a single unit, making gear changes at the track or at home very
simple. The 9" takes more power to turn than a 12 bolt (parasitic loss).
They are great rears, but I would not put a F*** part under my Chevy!!!
Curry or one of the aftermarket mfrs. now offers a 12 bolt with the quick
change setup.

[Chevelle-list] Re: 12 Bolt axle bearings

2005-12-05 Thread Clint Hooper
I'm running Baer's 12" Touring rear kit on my Fab 9. My Moser axles have
tapered rollers. Ball bearings are for dragracing.
However,I do know some running ball bearings on protourers. If I remember
correctly, tapered rollers took a little research to find for a Ford 9".

I'm always paranoid on the Power Tour. Usually
can't sleep for the first night or two. Believe it or not a car cover gives some
security. You can't tell what the car is and they can't see inside. I still have
nightmares of getting up in the morning to find my tripower gone. Or my Foose
wheels. Like Clint I prefer my 45 to a smaller less imposing
weapon.

Vigilance and prayer.  It's only parked & left at car shows or
cruise-ins, so I don't worry about it too much.  I pulled the coil
wire out 2 years ago when my wife & I went to a shopping center in

RE: [Chevelle-list] Chevelle Security

2005-12-05 Thread Brad Waller

Actually
very little for the Chevelle.  It has a hood lock from before I bought it,
but most other measures have either broken and been replaced or just
skipped.  I had a fancy starter solenoid that you turned the key in a code
sequence to start the car.  Great idea, but the company went out of
business and after the solenoid failed I just swapped in a regular one.  I
don't do much to stop someone from entering the car because it is so easy to
break into.  The club has been sitting in the garage for about ten
years...
If I had
an electric pump, I'd wire up a separate switch that could be hidden (like the
Corvette).  You will never stop the dedicated thief.  They will winch
it onto a flatbed if they have to, even with locked brakes and alarms
blaring.  You need to stop or deter the casual thief and joy rider.
Ignition and fuel cutoff's are my choice for that.

Chassis bolts are grade 8 or better. The ones that
attach the control arms if original have a small shoulder and use a lock nut.
The originals are better than most replacement bolts you will find and if they
do not show wear reuse them.

  John,

The bolts should be fine as long as they have not been yielded but, why
re-use such a inexpensive and critical part? I would think a grade 5
would be all you would need; you can look at the markings on the head to
identify what you have/what was used originally. IE, if you have 3 lines
pointed toward the center, you have a grade 5 bolt. If confused, find a
fastener store nearby[ Revcar, Fastenal, etc] and let the counter guys help
you. Don't forget to lubricate your new bolts; threads and all surfaces, like
  washers, that will see friction.

The Switch Pitch TH-400
Summary:
The reasoning behind installing an overdrive
transmission is running a low rear gearing to get off
the line, but still retain manageable RPMs at freeway
cruising speeds. This seems like the best of both
worlds, but this article will examine some reasons why
an overdrive transmission is not always be the best
solution.

Traditionally GM overdrive transmissions such as the
700-r4 and the 200-4r were viewed as anemic pieces for
gas sipping transportation appliances. The last
several years have revealed that these transmissions
can be modified to handle significantly more power
then in base configurations. A well-built and properly
adjusted overdrive transmission should be able to
handle around 450 ft/lbs of torque. Is that enough for
the engine combinations that people run in their hot
rods? In many cases the answer is no and I for one,
have been through enough "built" 700-r4s for a
lifetime.

So what then is the solution?
The solution is the tried and true TH-400, more
specifically the variable-pitch version of the TH-400.

The variable-pitch, or switch-pitch TH-400 is nothing
new as it has been around since 1965. Originally found
in Buick, Olds, and Cadillac the switch-pitch offers
two stall speeds, a low stall and a high stall.
Applying a positive 12-volt signal to the appropriate
terminal on the transmission case makes the selection
of low or high stall. The high stall gives you the
advantages of torque multiplication to get off the
line with a taller rearend gear and the low stall
decreases slippage for cruising or on the big end of
the track.

The variable-pitch stator is not the only advantage
that the TH-400 holds over its more modern overdrive
counterparts. A TH-400 will generally cost less then
an overdrive and it can be built to handle some
serious horsepower numbers. The TH-700 and TH-200 also
require a T.V. cable to be installed and adjusted
correctly or serious damage and shifting problems will
result, and getting it correct is often harder then it
seems at first glance. Another advantage of the TH-400
is a small spread between gears. First lets put some
gearing numbers out there for reference:

Gear Ratio Comparisons:

1st 2nd 3rd 4th
TH 400 2.48 1.48 1.00
TH 700 3.06 1.63 1.00 0.70
TH 200 2.74 1.57 1.0 0.67

It is clear that the two overdrive transmissions in
the comparison chart have lower first gear ratios as
well as have the advantage of overdrive, but let us
look at the numbers that are hidden between these
ratios.

Between Gear Gap Comparisons:

1st-2nd 2nd-3rd 3rd-4th
TH 400 1.00 0.48
TH 700 1.43 0.63 0.30
TH 200 1.17 0.57 0.33

Notice the large gaps between gear ratios. The TH-700
has a particularly nasty gap between 1st and 2nd. In
fact if you combine the 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd gaps on
the TH-400 you get roughly the same gap as the 1st-2nd
on the 700-r4. The result of this is that your first
gear in the TH-700 may launch you like a rocket, but
the huge gap is going to lug your engine and drop
RPMs, hurting performance. The TH-200 has a more
favorable gear separation then the TH-700, but the
TH-400 still has a slight edge.

Now to address the flaw in my argument that I am sure
many of you are thinking about. The TH-400 does not
have an overdrive gear and if you don't run an
overdrive then how can you possibly expect to have a
respectable freeway cruising RPM?

The solution to this is easy, run a taller rearend
gear. I argue that the many hotrods rarely, if ever,
see the drag strip and spend a lot more of their time
on the road. So why then do we put in a low rearend
gear that makes freeway driving unpleasant and limits
out terminal velocity to 115 miles per hour. An
overdrive transmission will make up for our low rear
gearing, but this introduces several problems.

Overdrive was never intended to be an acceleration
gear, which it is being forced to become if you are
running a deep rearend.
High drive shaft speeds
Running a 4.11 gear with a TH-700 sounds like a good
idea until you consider that with a 275/40R17 tire at
100 mph your drive shaft is spinning at somewhere in
the neighborhood of 5383 RPM for comparison a TH-400
with the same tire and a 3.08 rearend gearing will
turn 4034 RPM. The same comparison at 150 mph yields
8075 for the overdrive versus 6051 for the TH-400.

the original order but eventually one in Alhambra CA did it for him.
Interesting story about a pretty unique car. I checked but the

A true statement.  "Most of us don't have money to burn"!!  I had a 65 SS in 65 when I was a single guy with not much responsibility.  Then came the Army, 2 wives & 3 kids.  After driving a couple of so-so 65 SS's during the next 35 years.  At the age of 53  I finally got something nice.  Paid a fair but affordable price.  A few months later a Z-16 was offered at $200k out of a museum.  This was 2001.  I inquired and in my head I was selling my new 65 SS and arranging financing with my house, my IRA &  my children's college funds.  Spoke to my wife about it.  I think she had the attorney's phone number & a bag packed within minutes & was threatening to have me committed before she left.  OK.  It was a dream & I came back to earth.  But if I could have made it happen, what would that Z-16 be worth today?   Might have been a pretty good investment.  Of course I would have driven it.  My car's not a Picasso to hang on the wall.  I'll just have to be happy with my regular old 65 SS.  But I can always dream about owning a Z-16.  Do you guys with the 70's do the same when it comes to an LS-6?

What was the Auction number for the $150,000.00 convertible? Sorry but I can't find it. The (Blue) had sold for $172,000.00 @ the Barrett-Jackson auction January 17-20 2002. The (Black) LS6 went for $324,000.00 Jan 29 2005 .The Blue one was part of a discussion back 3 years or so when someone asked "If you could own any car what would it be". My answer was a 70 LS6 convertible. Someone wrote back and send a link where there was one for sale. The car was for sale for $175000.00 @ the time. The last I heard about the car is it went for $350,000.00 this summer. A documented (26 miles) LS6  hardtop went for $354,200.00 on Ebay. Look @ what the other cars brought in @ these auctions. I'm not saying these prices are right but don't you think if someone is paying that kind of money for a car they wouldn't have the documentation checked out? Bottom line is Some people have money to burn and most of us don't.
