I agree with Phil... Tell them to get new cables.
Corrosion usually happens inside the jacket of the
cable and reduces the amount of current it can carry.

A member of mine is having problems with his
starter?? You guys have any suggestions?? Here's
 his story

Morning guys (or gals, depending on who opens this
 email),

I’m having trouble with the starter on the
Chevelle. Last night I went to start the car it
wouldn’t start. Turn the key and nothing. No
click, no nothing. Everything else works,
headlights, radio, interior light, etc. I was able
to jump start the car by coasting and letting the
clutch out. It took me about twenty-five minutes to
get home. I turned the car off once in the garage,
then tried starting the car again. The car started
without hesitation. This is typical when ever I
experience this problem. This might happen twice in
a week or it may happen once every couple months.
The only consistency is it never seems to happen in
 cool weather.

I’m considering the following items next,
 - by passing the neutral safety switch.
 - installing a new ignition switch.

 A little history,

This started around three years ago. At that time I
had a rebuilt GM high torque starter. I installed a
reduction starter from Jeg’s about six weeks ago
giving into the heat soak theory with the stock
starter and headers. I considered changing the
battery cable along with the starter but it looked
in perfect shape, no damage or corrosion.

 Any ideas or suggestions?

 Thanks in advance!

Agree with
Rick, a 400 would be overkill, one reason Chevrolet installed the TH350 behind small
blocks. A 700R4 or 2004R would be good choices if you want an O/D
unit. Ive never had both in the same car so I cant offer a
true comparison. The 700R4 has a 3.06 low gear and .70 in O/D where the
2004R has a 2.74 and .67 O/D. Unless theres something wrong with
yourTH350 and/or you dont do much highway driving to really warrant the
O/Ds obvious positive feature the TH350 should be just fine IMO.

Not to sound like a chemist, which I am not...but most cheap lacquer thinners are cheap because of the raw materials use to blend them together. Prep type thinners stay away from the oily type thinners (mineral spirits, VMP Naptha ect.) and also stay away from the real strong thinners that are sometimes present in the lacquer thinners (Ketone family ie. MEK, MIBK, MAK) which sometimes are to strong and lifts the paint that you are just trying to clean the wax, grease and oil from a surface. My $.02

Jim, a good DX-330 or equal in a spray bottle will
last forever and that way you avoid contaminating the
product. I used to put a rag over the can and wet the
cloth that way but in order to avoid that, I picked a
couple of spray bottles. One is the wax and
degreaser(prep solvent) and the other is a
zinc-phosphate to de-rust a few things.
my 2 cents worth.

Jim, There is a reason for products like Presol,
Final wash, PPG 330 and Omni MX 190. I cannot give you a scientific
explaination, but I believe it has to do with the ability to lift wax and grease
from a surface without leaving behind a residue that may cause paint lifting or
other defects. Think about all the effort it takes to get a car ready for
painting. Do you really want to do it twice?

Personally with
the three things going at once I wouldnt worry about the volts dropping
to 12 as long as it comes back up during normal operations.
A 63 amp unit should be enough if its in good working order. If
you also had a high-end stereo then a 100-130 amp wouldnt be out of line
IMO.

Hi Dave,
  I have a 1968 Chevelle SS 396 that I installed a One-wire Alternator from
Powermaster on 06-20-2002. Part number 8002. the Output at Idle is with a stock
pulley at 2400 rpm was 75 amps, and at hwy speeds of 6000 Dyno Rpm was 102
amps. I just had to run a wire directly to the battery. I didn't mess with
running it through the starter etc. I also had to modify my Voltage Reg to keep
the battery light from staying on all the time. The only thing I run off this
is an MSD box, radio lights etc. No stereo or other add ons.

Always start at the battery. I battery with a bad cell will give you lights and radio. You need to run a load test or take it to Pep Boys or Auto Zone they will do it free right at the counter. Make sure you put a fresh charge on it over night. Hot weather will kill a battery just as quick as cold weather. Did you check the water level?

I upgraded mine years ago to a 100 amp unit.
I don't open these things up, but it was able to be done within my existing
