Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 chevelle leak

2004-11-24 Thread TronDD
Around the windshield. It travels down to the dash then to the lip of
the dash where it can be carried to the middle of the driver's side
before dripping to the floor. I had a leak like that on both sides.

water). There is no obvious point of entry other then the hole where the
speedo cable goes through but I doubt water jumped up through there because
the car hasn't moved. Could it possibly be a leak in the side of the window
that's rolling around through the dash and dripping down? Anyone else have
this problem? I can't find any trace of some pathway in so I am a little
mystified on how the water got there.

Not sure how installation would go, I installed them with the motor, but
Dynomax headers fit without clearance issues and are fairly cheap. They

Re: [Chevelle-list] Adjustale upper trailing arms

2003-07-25 Thread TronDD
I have the BMR adjustable uppers. Yes, you have to grind the arm down
on the inside of the driver's side arm. They designed the arms wider
than stock at the bushing location and used a poly spacer. I have no
idea why they did it that way but it won't fit as is. Hated having
to put the grinder to the nicely powder coated arm. Other than that,
they are a fine product.

Re: [Chevelle-List] HELP QUICK

2002-07-03 Thread TronDD

Rear is easy. Jack the car up by the frame or jack it up under the diff and put
jackstands under the frame. Let the rear hang. Shouldn't be much force left in the
springs. Can probably squeeze it enough with your hands or pry at it with a tire iron
or something. If all alse fails, removing the shock on that side will allow the rear
to drop enough for the spring to almost fall out.

If the consumers are that mindless then why shouldn't the company charge them whatever
they want? The people need to smarten up, not be babysat by government.

Cliff:
I don't know what the outcome of the Microsoft case turned out to be. The whole thing
was rediculus to begin with. If Microsoft was a monopoly I wouldn't be using Linux,
I'd be using Windows or nothing.

The part about Compaq is a contract between them and Microsoft. They did not have to
enter such a deal. They did because ultimatly it was best for their business.

Lying on the stand or during other legal proceedings is another matter, of course.

Whether GM still has a right to this stuff under American laws, I do not know. So
without getting into pointless debate about it I'm gonna step out of the conversation.
Private Email is fine, but I don't want to get the Chevelle list into politics.
We've been there. :)

I'm curious to see how this will all turn out as there is no way for me to stock up on
parts now while they are cheap.

Then call me crazy because Microsoft is NOT a monopoly. I say this to you from my
Linux computer. Nothing makes me buy a Microsoft product and nothing ever will.

You people seem to forget that the consumer is the botom line. If a company does
something out of line, don't buy from them. Seek an alternative or make one. No one
owes you a cheap way to restore a car YOU chose to have. If it becomes too expensive,
then don't do it. Then GM looses.

My recomendation would be to get a car you don't care about for the winters. I drove
my Chevelle daily for a winter...it was awful. All kinds of new rust popped up.
Mostly from a previous owner cover up job, but the winter sure helped. To drive my
Chevelle in the winter again would require sealing every square inch of metal in
pullet-proof rust prevention. I started my restaration this winter, lots of rust I
never saw while the car was together. :( Body work is expensive and some parts aren't
reproduced. I won't risk rusting it out.

Other people, though, seem to get along fine. The car has lasted (more or less) 30+
years already so maybe it's not all that bad. I just want my car around for a long
time and I don't want to be fixing major rust more than once.

Turn off HTML in your email software. That's all HTML code the mail server is trying

I removed my plastic inner fenders to get them out of the way so I can paint my
frame. As many know, the plastic ones are garbage. They are all cracked. I
want to replace them with steel repros. Can the steel ones be installed with
the outter fender on the car? If it doesn't flex much, it might be a wrestling
match getting them in there...is it possible?

Are there differant manufacturers of the inner fenders? Anything to avoid or
watch for?

I put American Racing Outlaw I rims up front and Outlaw II's in the rear.

CFM = (Cubic Inches x RPM x Volumetric Efficiency) / 3456

Then there has been some discussion that the CFM is then multiplied by a number
that is determined by the other components of the car (dual plane manifold and
such). That number is usually 1.2 or 1.3 Anyone else care to comment on that?

[Chevelle-List] Window knob stays on

2001-09-19 Thread trondd

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Ok...I took the window crank off (the tool they sell to get the clips off is
pretty handy) and took a look at the knob as it didn't stay in at all anymore.
It looked like a pressed in and peened (sp?) over type of thing at first but
closer inspection looked like there was a clip that fit back there (a groove
in the knob's shaft and some wear on the crank lead to that guess). No idea if
that is true or not but I fashioned a clip out of a paper clip and it works
fine. We can close the books on this one.

Indeed it will...I've launched one of those clips into limbo an a previous
occasion.

There still isn't a concensus on how they were attached. I've heard popped on
ond riveted on. This doesn't look like it had a rivet in it. But this may also
be a replaced knob. I guess it's time to take things apart and have a good
look. My next post will probably be about finding relacement clips...I hate

Last week the drivers side knob on the window crank started to half pop out of
the whole and would bind up...I'd have to pop it back in to continue opening or

repeated doing so. Is there supposed to be something that holds the knob in
the chrome crank? Is it just a pop in kind of thing that's just worn out and I
have to deal with it?

Also does anyone know what the original knob color was in a green interior? I
have one black (the one that falls out) and one translucent gold (seems to
match better) knob. Just curious as I don't think I've ever seen the gold one
in any other car.

Welcome to the list.

After 1972 engine power seemed to be cut in half due to emmissions regulations
and rising gas prices. I don't know now hard it is to get parts in Hungary but
even that '77 engine can be rebuilt to have the power it would have had before
'72.

Used engine prices vary quite a bit. Rebuilt 350's I've have been sold
anywhere from $800 to $1,600 give or take some depending on power. Used,
unrebuilt can be anything. Some people give old engines away. But then you
most likely have to have it rebuilt.

Good luck on your project.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Redundant question: tire size for 67 Chevell

I've always heard (not from reliable sources) that you cannot rotate radial
tires side to side. Something about radial tires that once rotating in one
direction won't go the other way for some reason. I guess if you swapped your
tires you'd be going in reverse all the time. And what if you only rotated the
back and not the front...would rip the car in half if you put the hammer down.
:)

Just wondering if not being able to rotate radials side to side is nonsence.

I thought it was supposed to be plant related numbers but when I mis-calculated
it to 200,000 that was way too high.

Also, mhat's the number on the cowl tag? Body sequence number? Bodies were

I decoded my cowl tag and VIN for kicks today. It got me thinking. How was
production handled in '69? Like today we get the new model year starting in
september or so. So 2002s will be hitting showrooms soon even though it's
still 2001. Was it the same in '69? My car was built in October but it was
the 209,856th car built according to the VIN. Would there have been 209,000+
cars built by the end of october '68? Or was it built in October of '69?

In case you need it, my VIN is 1 3637 9G309856. Not sure if the 209,000 cars
is for coupes only or what.

Oh yeah...The VIN info here lists most coupes as notch backs. BUt the last one
is listed as a Plain Back (#87). What was the plain back, or perhaps WHEN was

Not under the hood of race cars. I've only recently gotten into cars and I
don't follow drag racing to know whats commonly used. Again...although a 1/4
miles is short and many gears wouldn't be necessary...it seemed to me that a 2
speed wouldn't allow you to stay in your optimum power range as long as a
tranny with more gears. But I don't know drag racing well enough to know how
wide a race engine's power band is or to what RPM the PG shift would put you.
Apparently they work so my assumptions are flawed due to my ignarance.

True..but I would think that the shift might drop you below optimum power. But
it may not and a quarter mile is too short to need too many gears. I guess,
never raced.

Is there anyone that's put together a transmission that constatly changed so
the engine could be kept the most optimal RPM? Like belts with conical pullies
where the belt constantly slides along the pully.

Are we talking 2 speed Powerglides here? I don't much see the value in that
for racing. I would think you would want some more gears. I have a Powerglide
in my '69...I'd love to sell it, too. Or maybe win races with it...riiight.

Nice. I always thought that would be a handy feature. Of course it would be
better for me if I could search posts from before I joined the list, I read
them all now. :) It'll be fun to go back after a while and see how many
unsubscribe posts we have had.

Thanks for the effort in making this a great list.

Parts that don't fit and the captions in the catalogs are a result of trying to
make a quick buck. These companies are just resellers. They don't care
what the products is, they just want to sell it for a profit. They don't test
it or even write the caption for it. I've seen captions that are exactly the
same as the caption in other catalogs and on the part manufacturor's web site.
They just want to move parts. A good reseller would sell what they feel to be
a good quality product. I for one wouldn't sell crap unless that's what I was
selling it as. If a company actually looking into the products they sold,
they would be more willing to back it up with a guarantee (which becomes
customer service).

I have used the Paddock and didn't have any trouble with them. The best thing
about them is when you are on hold, it's like a half hour commercial for them
and it has that funky echo for effect or something. "The Paddock, the leader in
to your door parts parts parts."

:)

Seriously, does it even matter what the topic of the list is? What would you
expect to gain by joining a list that has only 4 emails a year? There could be
so many good lists out there if there was only enough information being passed
around on them. 50 e-mails a day...I expect nothing less from a good list.

We need to make a testimonials page made up of all these "too much e-mail"
complaints so people know what they are getting into. If it scares them off,
at least we won't have to put up them asking us to be removed because they
can't do it themselves. But then, that's the type of person who would ignore
the warnings anyway.

Just letting you know that there is a now Chevy magazine on the shelves.
"Chevy Rumble" just came out this month. Covers a lot of pre-Chevelle Chevys
but has articles on small block induction, disc break conversion, an 8.1
Vortec motor, and a '69 502 Chevelle.

Might want to hit the news stand and check it out.

Let me start by saying I am in no way tring to force you to wear a seat belt.
It's all up to you. This started with the argument that people should choose
if they want to use safety equipment or not but if they choose not to, I
shouldn't have to pay the bill.

It would probably be better to hit the on comming car due to crumple zones and
the like. But if they are going very fast, the impact felt is his momentum
plus yours, you're gonna feel it pretty good no matter how much you slow down.
Also sometimes insurance, medical personnel, and the police aren't too happy
that you hit the other car dead on if you could have swerved to avoid it. My
father drives with the attitude of: it's my lane I can use any part of it I
want, you stay out. But these days, the other drivers aren't intimidated by
that and don't budge. I hate riding with my father. But I digress.

Anyway, do what you want. And I would definatly wear a seatbelt (maybe two) if
I had to ride with you. :)

Maybe your seatbelts need pins on the inside to reduce that safe feeling.

So in an accident where an unbelted occupant would sustain major injuries and
cost a bundle, a belted occupant who sustains light injuries wouldn't cost less?

A person with a helmet that falls off ther bike getting scratched and a
concussion isn't cheaper than someone without a helmet falling off their bike
and causing brain damage and becoming unable to work, move, or think?

I'm trying to come up with an example in opposition to your argument. If I can
find one example that shows helmets and seatbelt are cheaper to society then it
blows your argument out of the water. But I think I have gotten off track and
you aren't making your point clearly. My question for you is, overall cost to
whom? I was considering only government cost, as in my tax dollars. Someone
whe get's a bruise from a seatbelt shouldn't cost me a dime. Someone on
disability, welfare or medicare can cost me.

So then that was not a lame example. That's what I wanted to hear. You
suggest that anyone who sustains fatal injury due to their unsafe practices
should be left to die. That works for me. Pay for your own mistakes. That
goes for non-fatal injuries, too. If it's due to your stupidity, then you pay
for it. I don't think society should support stupidity.

Are you suggesting we leave them to die or just stating that it would be
cheaper if we did? So the point is not what type of incident would cause more
injury and therefore cost more in medical aid but what should be done if
someone needs aid due to their non adherence to safty.

But what about driving down the street at 35mph and some idiot comming the
other way weaves into your lane? You swerve and hit a tree. You saying
that a seatbelt is more likely to do you more harm than good? It's at high
speed agressive driving where you shouldn't bother wearing one. If you get in
an accident at high speed the injuries will be so severe that in this case it's
less likely that a seatbelt will matter (but it's still possible it will).

It would seem to me that at any speed, chances are the seatbelt will help.

Oh yeah...forgot about insurance. Not something I would know about since I got
the run around trying to get the Chevelle insured and ended up with just the
legal minimum. My insurance won't get me a new car. Not even another car.

I don't think it should matter what percent costs us how much. The point is
people who choose not to protect themselve should not get any aid. There
should be seatbelt and helmet requirements not laws. As in, you are required
to wear it, if you choose not to and get hurt because of it, you're on your
own. No government aid. No punishment for not doing it, but you are
rewarded by doing it. More like a covenant, don't follow the rules, fine. But
good luck.

I don't know why people wouldn't wear a seatbelt anyway. Although with a
nonretractable shoulder belt, as in my Chevelle, I can't reach the vent knobs
and can barely get to the window crank, but I manage. So don't give me crap
about it being restrictive or uncomfortable.

Goes along with what someone once said: People drive like maniacs these days
because they know they won't die. They have airbags. If, instead of airbags,
knives shot out of the steering wheel in an accident, people would drive alot
more carefully.

Maybe we could start doing that to make cars more dangerous. :)

I wish I could throw cars away and get new ones...that takes quite a bit of
money these days. What was it, 3 grand for a new Chevelle? Today the
cheapest cars are more around $15,000 and all you get is 4 cylinders, 90 HP,
and a box on wheels. Nothing there to take pride in. Of course, with some
more money...I could take pride in a new Farrari. :)

Not me. I haven't been of voting age that long. Blame someone else :P

Do people actually vote for anti-privacy type laws and practices or are they
just put into use "for the good of society"? I certainly didn't vote to allow
my name and number to be sold to any and all companies so they can call me all
day and all night.

Also, I am against seatbelt and helmet laws. You want to die...fine. But you

"Too fast" isn't an opinion it's a law. You pay the price of some freedom in
order to gain safety from others. That's society. Why should I drive 30mph in
a residential area just so I can get whacked in front of my house by a guy going
90 who has a differant opinion of "too fast"? I'd like to go 90mph
sometime...but I give up the freedom to do so in order to be protected from
others who won't do it safely.

But anyway...back to the point of privacy: Again...if you're not doing
anything wrong, why do you care who knows where you are in your car or when you
use your credit card?

BTW, don't take me too seriously. I'm not the morality police when it comes to
speeding or anything. I was just stating an obvious solution to an example
scenario. I'm taking this conversation lightly so I hope the rest of you all
do, too (without taking the actual point too lightly). Also, I never read the
original post so I'm just talking out of my @$$ anyway. :)
