I can go all-out and rebuild it with a new M-22 gearset, Super-Case & Super-Tailhousing or buy one assembled for under $1800 with all new parts. I only want to do this once but I don't want to spend more money than I have to -- or be stuck with more parts laying around the shop. It will be going behind a pretty strong 283 until the 327 is put back together. I may have to upgrade the transmission when the 327 is finished since all the dyno reports suggest 500 hp. The case and tailhousing appear to be in good shape, but I will be replacing the aluminum mid-plate with an iron mid-plate. It looks like it could use a new reverse gear or I could clean it up with a die grinder. It would be a good idea to add new synchro rings and a new 2nd gear, so I could pay a little more and get a whole new gearset. The car has 4.56:1 rear gears so maybe upgrading to a close-ratio would be a better choice over the wide ratio? Is anyone running a Muncie 4-speed? If so, how much torque are you putting into it? I agree but the reason it shifts badly is that the linkage stretches. Re: [Chevelle-list] Muncie linkage.
Dennis, I agree with Trooper. My Muncie shifter was a pain to install, a pain to shift, and a pain to yank out. Just buy a handle and use a good Hurst Competition Plus shifter. The Muncie shifts like a wet noodle and is prone to binding.especially if there is a hot chick in the nearby vicinity or a crowd is watching you try to show off. You can find plans on the web to make an adaptor for the Muncie Handle. It is easyweld two pieces of steel into a T-shape and drill 4 bolt holes. My engine makes about 425 and I use an M21. Unless you are pulling hole shots, the 21 is more than enough and you can pick them up for $500. Granted, we'll all pull a hole shot once in a while. But for $500, you can break three 21's before you get to a 22... P is Muncie 0614 is June 14 (assuming a zero '0' and there's no space between it and the '6'). This is a 64 to 66 transmission. 1967 saw the introduction of the model year in the number - such as P8T13. P is Muncie, 8 is for 1968, T is for December, and 13 is the 13th. M20, M21 and M22 didn't get a letter designator until 1969 with 'A', 'B', and 'C' respectively. Congrats on the find though! RE: [Chevelle-List] Muncie shifter handle on a Hurst shifter
Steve, I don't sell Hurst but I've used their shifters for almost 40 years in my Chevelles. The one in this particular car has been there for 15 years. One steel bushing kit, like you mentioned, and it's never given me a lick of trouble. Summit is probably about as low ball priced as anyone for Hurst equipment. Unless you know the previous owner or know all of the parts (rods, arms, shifter assy) by their numbers, I'd be leary of swap meet items. I don't know of anyone who makes the adapter commercially, but any welding or machine shop should be able to follow the specs on that page. You could probably get a high school or votech student to make one up as a class project. You'll note the specs for the shifter handle aren't given so you'd have to measure your stock tower for the bolt spacing...I imagine there are different measurements for different year towers. Re: [Chevelle-List] Muncie shifter handle on a Hurst shifter
I have put the Muncie handle on a Hurst shifter by just cutting the bottom of the handle where it has the 90 deg bend then drill two holes to bolt it to the Hurst like stock Hurst handle. The Muncie shifters are getting hard to find so it seems a shame to cut up a Muncie shifter. I have a Hurst and want to put the Muncie back in. lol The Hurst has a offset where the handle bolts on. It you have the right Hurst shifter and the right plate between shifter and trans it should be no problem. - Original Message - From: "Stephen Lentz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2003 2:12 PM Subject: [Chevelle-List] Muncie shifter handle on a Hurst shifter > Dale, > I was admiring the background on the scan with the wiper arm remover tool > and happened to look at your odd ball stuff page. I've found that www.sallee-chevrolet.com has great prices. If it's not listed on their website, call them and they usually have it. Their website says only 5% of what they carry is listed on the website. Their # is 1-800-545-0048 I bought my Edelbrock Q-Jet and Carter fuel pump from them at a significantly lower price than I could find anywhere else. Hi Steve, i 'm useing the Hurst Comp Plus Shifter in my 72 Chevelle, but i don't have the console to hide the boot and the retainer ring, my boot and ring from hurst is much larger then the stock and it won't screw down at all 4 corners cause of the size, i'm still at a loss on what i can do to make this look like it was from the factory, i bought a new boot and ring but can't use them because of the shifter, i have a bench seat also, i hate to have to bye a muncie shifter and have those darn shifting problems happen to me so i'm with you on this one thanks Ken 72 HeavyChevy
[Chevelle-List] Muncie shifter handle on a Hurst shifter
Dale, I was admiring the background on the scan with the wiper arm remover tool and happened to look at your odd ball stuff page. You show a Hurst shifter with a Muncie lever. Do you know if anyone makes this adaptor. I'm not much of a welder and don't have the equipment anyway. I can't seem to get my Muncie shifter to go in reverse unless I have a spare minute or three to wiggle the handle (a lot) before getting it to go. I've also found that the time takes much longer if there are women present or another vehicle waiting for me to back up. I think I'm going to buy a Hurst Comp Plus shifter (the 8014 model) and the Hurst installation kit (the 7834 model) as well as new steel bushings and a backup light switch (Yippee- no more ugly toggle switch on the transmission hump!). Hopefully this combination using the Hurst shifter with the Muncie handle will work with my stock console and bucket seats and still look correct. My car is a 70. Re: [Chevelle-List] Muncie result
Make me an offer. I had a look inside tonight. I was pleasantly supprizzed. It was extremely clean. It will need a bearing kit though. The front bearings are rather rusty as it was undercover outside for many years. I notice complete bearing kits are only about 75 bucks on ebay. After looking inside I am bummin that it wasn't a M22 . Ill hopefully get a few picks this weekend and I can email them to you. If you are no longer interested let me know and I may put it on ebay. RE: [Chevelle-List] Muncie result
Yeah, but any Muncie 4 speed is pretty rugged. A friend of mine with a drag car once pointed out to me that I do a hole shot about maybe once every couple weeks at the most and I almost never slam shift the thing. He correctly pointed out that I like to THINK I'm something of a hotrodder, but the reality is I can't afford to pick up a four point ticket. And, frankly, I've grown much much more careful in any area that even LOOKS like there might be kids lurking somewhere. Therefore, in the rare cases where I do let the thing out a bit, it's always an expressway or some other relatively remote location. I suppose even an early model Muncie will endure my lightweight use for YEARS without trouble. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of JDHall Sent: Wednesday, July 31, 2002 9:37 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Muncie result What I figured. Unfortunately the '63-65 Muncies are not as durable or suited for hi-po use as the '66-74 models, so I'm guessing someone interested in yours would be so for restoration purposes. The number on the case is 3851325 This looks to be M20 63-65 3851325 2.56 1.91 1.48 1.00 by my search What would one of these be worth? Is there anyone in the market for one? JDHall

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I picked up a Muncie 4sp shifter for a 1969 Chevelle and it appears to be complete except for the small bracket that bolts to the top of the transmission. This bracket holds the brace on the rubber insulated end. Anyone know where I can get this small bracket? thanks - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Chevelle-List] Muncie Transmissions/ID
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List HISTORY and IDENTIFICATION The Muncie 4-speed transmission was used with many different GM models and engine combinations from 1963-1974. The basic design and operation theory of the gearbox changed little during that time, though several design upgrades and modifications were made during the total production run. The Muncie was used with most performance engines and is not to be confused with the Saginaw or Borg-Warner 4-speeds. The Muncie is distinguished from the Saginaw in that the reverse lever on the Muncie is mounted in the extension housing, where the Saginaw reverse lever is mounted in the side cover. The main difference between the Muncie and the Borg-Warner is that the Muncie has a 7 bolt side cover and the Borg-Warner has a 9 bolt side cover. MUNCIE DATE CODING Many Muncie 4-speed maincases, extension housings, and sidecovers have a casting date code. On maincases, the code is usually found on the passenger side of the case below the casting number. The extension housing code is usually within a few inches of the casting number also on the passenger side. Muncie casting date codes are very different from other transmission manufacturers. The code consists of two circles, both 1/2-inch in diameter and divided in half. One circle is called the date marker, the other the status marker. The date marker has a month designator for when the part was cast or manufactured. This is represented by the numbers 1 through 12(Jan - Dec.). The opposite side of the date marker has between one and five dots, representing the week of the month. The easiest way to discern the proper date mark circle is to look for the week designator spots. Always check to see that the date marked precedes the final assembly stamp code. The status marker has the latest blueprint change number on one side of the circle, and a deviation notice letter on the other side if the part change letter is active. This information was only useful to the Muncie plant by allowing the tracking of problem parts. This circle is usually blank. MUNCIE PARTS IDENTIFICATION Muncie main drive gear and countergear parts are easily identified when the transmission is apart. The following table outlines the differences between the Muncie models. MUNCIE MODEL/YEAR MAIN DRIVE GEAR (TEETH) MUNCIE MODEL/YEAR COUNTERGEAR (TEETH) M20 1963-65 Wide Ratio 24 M20 1963-65 Wide Ratio 17 19 22 29 M20 1966-70 Wide Ratio 21 M20 1966-74 Wide Ratio 17 19 22 25 M21 1963-70 Close Ratio 26 M21 1963-74 Close Ratio 17 19 22 27 M22 1965-70 26 M22 1965-72 17 19 22 27 MUNCIE 4-SPEED ALUMINUM COMPONENT CASTING NUMBERS YEAR APPLICATION MAINCASE CASTING# EXTENSION HOUSING CASTING# SIDECOVER CASTING# FRONT BEARING RETAINER CASTING # 1965 Passenger Corvette Chevy II Chevelle 3851325 3846429* (to 2/65) 3857584 (after 2/65) 3831707 3851326 1966, 1967 Passenger Corvette Chevy II Chevelle Camaro(1967) 3885010 3857584 3884685 3851326 1968, 1969 Passenger Corvette Chevy II Chevelle Camaro 3925660** 3857584 3884685(1968) 3950306(1969) 3915020 *The 3846429 extension was manufactured in two versions, a "thin rib" and a "wide rib." **Muncie data shows 1968 and 1969 M22 received maincase #3925661. All documented M22 transmissions have the #3925660 maincase. It's unclear as to why this discrepancy exists. How can you tell if the transmission in your car is the one the car was originally built with? All original Muncie transmissions have ring grooves on the input shaft and counter gear. These grooves were put on for the Muncie assembly line workers to readily identify which input shaft to install and therefore shouldn't be used for positive identification of tranmsissions since many of these shafts have been replaced. Also several Muncie parts -primarily the maincase- were found to have documented "oddball" casting numbers on production vehicles. None of these maincases are shown on the original build records from the Muncie plant and should also not be used for identification purposes. Many transmissions over the years have been rebuilt or replaced, upgraded from a 3-speed to a 4-speed etc. which can make identification somewhat difficult at times. Shown below are some diagrams that will describe where the serial number is stamped on all transmission cases. The 9-digit code will tell you which division, year, model, assembly plant, and car the transmission was pulled from. The first digit tells what division the transmission is built for (Oldsmobile's number is 3). The second digit is the last digit of he model year (7=1967, 9=1969 etc.). The third digit is the code for the assembly plant the car was built in. The last six digits should match the last six digits of your V.I.N. (generally found on the door hinge of 1964-1967 models and on the left top side dash of 1968-72 models). If the numbers don't mat

I really dont know why they are broken ! they were ok when I put the trans in four years ago and there where no loose bolts or anything. Its make me think that its because I loosened the lower bolts first, but the breaks looked old. Larry or anyone else, can you tell which trans it is from the numbers i posted before ?? I mean M-20 or M-21 ?? Any idea if I sould empty the case of the trans before having it welded ? I'm thinking of a possible bearing damage becuse of the heat from the weld ? Hopefully someone who has more experience than I will tell us both where I am wrong :). 1-Make sure tranny is in neutral. 2- There should bushings where the linkage goes into the shifter and tranny arms - make sure that they are present and not worn. Replace if necessary. 3-Also check the linkage arm ends for wear. 2-there are holes in the shifter arms at the bottom of the handle- put a bolt or screwdriver that is about the same diameter (5/16???) thru all 3 shifter arms. You may have to disconnect one or more of the linkage arms to get it thru all 3. 4-adjust the fitting at the end of the shifter linkage till they fit in the tranny arms with the shifter arms "Pinned". That should do it. And again - hopefully someone will update this with some curent info. rick schaefer http://members.home.net/jimmy4/rick1972elky.htm http://chevelles.com/showroom/ricks%20motor%20-L -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Fri Jun 29 05:56:43 PDT 2001 Subject: [Chevelle-List] Muncie shifter 1967 Chevelle >I am having problems with my new shifter in a 1967 Chevelle SS 396 >convertible. RE: [Chevelle-List] Muncie shifter 1967 Chevelle
Looks like nobody else answered your question so I thought I'd at least respond. I've had 5 67 SS's, all with 4-speeds. Wise or not, the first thing I always did was toss them out in favor of a Hurst. Muncie shifters were notorious for being "loose" if I remember correctly. If you really want to keep the resto look, you can adapt the Muncie tower to a Hurst shifter. Visit http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/stuff/muncie_to_hurst.htm for an article on just how to make the simple bracket that will allow this. The *only* thing you lose is having to pull up the lever to get to reverse.
