They are all stamped in Taiwan. You can get premium quality bumpers that
are stamped in Taiwan but they are shipped to the US bare and the chroming
is done in Mexico. They are supposed to have a better quality chrome job and
they are not much more expensive.

The 68 fan shroud is a 1 year only item. There are 3 bolts that
retain the top of the shroud to the radiator cover, which is also a 1 year only
item specific to 68. The shroud has 1 bolt on each en, and 1 in the middle
that you cannot see unless you look at the radiator from the engine bay, but you
can fell it if you put your hand in the shroud.

Even though it wouldn't be correct looking, would a '69 top
plate shroud fit a '68? I think it might, just based on the fact that my
car has a 1958 block with a long water pump and later-style pulley setup, and
the radiator and shroud were both from friends who just had them laying around.
I have no idea what year or model car (or truck) either of them originally came
from, but they fit fine.

AS long as you have the 69-72 top plate, you can use any 69-72
shroud. The 69-70 are the same, the 71-72 are the same. I would use
a 71-72 shroud since it covers more of the radiator. As for the top
plates, there are 2 different ones. One is for a non A/C small block car,
the other one is for a factory A/C car or factory big block car. The ideal
one is the latter of the 2.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 1968 fan shroud

2006-02-04 Thread Ron Zeppin
Sounds like an awesome project. One of my coworkers mentioned a month
ago or so that he wanted to sell his 'hot rod' (he's in his
50's!) I asked him what his hot rod was, and he told me a '68 Malibu. He
bought it back in the early 90's, had it for awhile, wound
up putting a very healthy 400 +.060, ran it for a bit, put a set of Dart
Iron heads on it, new aluminum manifold, and holley 750 vac. sec,
3 exaust back to Flowmasters (not sure what model) then 2.5 all the
way out the back. TH350 tranny with a shift kit.

Nothing has more than 1000 miles on it.
Then he brought it out to Phoenix... couldn't get it through emissions,
so he put it in storage...back in 1998.
It's been sitting since then. Shouldn't be too tough to get it in legal
shape...getting it through emissions will be the trick.
The interior is strictly a yank it and toss it plan... nothing in it is
worth keeping. It's got two mismatched buckets...I'm trying to
decide whether to go with correct buckets, or get a custom pair from
summit/jegs, etc??
Body is relatively rust free from what i've seen so far. little rust
through on driver side rear wheel well opening, right at the top.
A bit on the package tray. seems to be a fair amount of filler in the
rear quarters...one of my first priorities is to find out

how bad they are...if they too bad, I'll wind up replacing the quarters.
Doors seems decent, front fenders and hood seem fine. grills a tiny bit
messed up, but I think I can fix it...
I'm planning on going with a mostly stock interior, from a kit. A buddy
of mine is giving me a Muncie M20 for the car,

as I'm a big believer in bangin' gears...be a bigger part of the experience!
It was originally Grotto Blue, now it BROWN! yuck! I'm planning on
taking it back to blue...not sure if I'll keep it the same
shade yet though. I'm planning on setting the guage cluster up with
Autometer guages.
Wheels are up in the air...I'll keep the ones that are on it now until I
can afford a custom set...

They're 265/60/15's on it, all the way around.

That's a general rundown! ;)
This has been a LONG AWAITED venture...15 years since I've had a muscle car!

I don't know why, but they are not listed as being the same. The reason I
don't know why is because when I built my 69 El Camino SB I used a shroud

fit just fine. Since you already have it, you have nothing to lose by trying

[Chevelle-list] 1968 Chevelle Concours 2 Dr. Coupe Info

2006-01-02 Thread Tracey Beardsley
I own a 68 chevelle concours model. No one has been
able to provide any information. I want to know if you
can help me with any info about production, the naming
of the car, why they built the concours differently
from the other chevelles, anything you can possibly
tell me. I don't need info on the wagon. I am
interested in the 2 door coupes. Some people say they
were different because of the strike. But there has
been no hard evidence of such. I would appreciate any
websites, books, or people that I could contact to
research the car. Thank you very much

2005-09-27 Thread Dale

If its a street car, Id
discourage it. Most glass front ends are designed for racing
think and light weight and not up to daily driving and would probably have a
tendency to crack.

If its a one-piece unit, grille and
headlamp areas probably have to be cut out, bumper mounting might be a problem,
all electrical components (headlamps) would have to be grounded to the chassis and
some method devised to either remove it completely for engine service (a pain
when youre alone and need to check fluids and have to run around the car
removing pins) or hinge it to tilt forward (still might take two people and you
still have the pins).

If its separate pieces (fenders
and hood), alignment/fit-and-finish would probably be a bear.

However, Unlimited Products (http://www.up22.com/chevelle68.htm)
does have the pieces/parts but I havent heard anything good about their
products for street use; maybe theyve improved. US Body (http://www.usbody.com) is another
source I found with a quick Google.com search.

[Chevelle-list] 1968 on EBAY

2005-05-26 Thread Scott Somers

It ain't for show but the person that was interested in how I mounted the
amp and EQT's in my '68, it's on ebaymotors at

item number 4551565286

You might also be able to see the tweeter location for the fron Focals. No
fancy mounting in this car but they throw a nice image and that's what it's
about. The 6.5 Focals really need to be clipped at 80 or so with the under
80 going to subs ( go JL Audio unless ya wanna dump a ton on Focal subs).
No rear fill speakers..just let volume set the rear fill effect - just like
in a concert. Get power to go over the sound of the motor and pipes. Don't
mess with center channels. They were a headache in the 90's and still would
be. Get a lot of GOOD CLEAN power, aim the speakers for good stage, cut off
with good sloping for your system and rock on.

By the way, someone will get a great deal on the '68. I put 22K in it last
year in about 5 months after I bought it for a lot last April. Still
cheaper than my ex wife...and more fun as well.

Hello

Does anyone know how to dismantle a 1968 Chevelle
ignition switch. I didn't disassemble the dash, but have to put it back
together. If you know what I'm talking about then you know that it is surrounded
by a chrome plastic bezel that threads onto the switch housing. I won't go over
the stainless part where you insert the key, so I suppose youhave to
remove the switch and then slide it back inonce the housing is attached to
the bezel, sort of like how the glove box assembly works. Not sure if I'm off
base on this one, but can anyone help.

Some of the key tumblers you insert the key

work good)down the hole in the face beside the key and then it turns a

[Chevelle-list] 1968 Chevelle second design?

2004-06-25 Thread John Nasta
I was just looking at my Chevrolet parts interchange manual, and it says
that a certain pair of hood springs (p/n 3864680) fit 1968 Chevelle second
design. Anybody ever heard of this before? If it's accurate, what was the
first design and what changed between the first and second? I don't think
it's the SS hood option, because the same springs claim to fit all 1969-72
Chevelles, except 1971-72 SS Heavy Chevy. This of course brings up another
question. Why would they fit 1970 SS but not 1971-72? The cover of the book
says that it is for 1959-70, so maybe they just don't have accurate info for
71-72. they only list the hinges up to 1970, so I can't see if it's the same
hinge or not.

TIA,
John Nasta

a measurement/reference hole going through the frame, I wonder if
someone out there have a book which tells the exact distance from this
hole to wheel centerline.
I measured it to be 10 to 10 1/4 but the measurement depends on how
many shims are used.

There is another reference hole in the corvette crossmember which is
marked as 0 zero I'm quite sure this indicates wheel centerline on the
corvette parts so if I had the distance it would just be a matter of
mocking up the parts and welding them in.

Also if someone have a c4 I could need some measurements of the car at
ride height.

Thanks !

Again, I don't quite have enough information to do it all that well, and
the software is not specific for lots of parts. I get to choose dual
plane or single, and that is it. I can't specify the difference between
a Performer or RPM even, so there will be differences in real life here.
Same goes for rod length, roller rockers, etc. I only have old GM head
flow data for the 441, 462, and 882 heads. I'm guessing that the 487X
is most like the 882. I also guessed at 9.5:1 compression, although
this might be high. Without knowing the head gasket thickness and how
far the piston is down the bore at TDC I can't calculate the
compression. Also, is the piston truly flat top, or does it have a
small valve relief. This can make a difference.

Without even running the simulation, my first thought is that you are
giving up a lot with those heads. You have the great big bore, and only
1.94/1.5 valves. I'll get you my best guess of your results, and then
make a few checks with other heads...

[Chevelle-list] 1968 SS 396 Glovebox Nameplate

Hey guys gal(s),

I was just mucking around pulling orders and accidentally broke a 1968 SS
396 Glovebox Nameplate while rummaging through boxes. If anybody wants it,
let me know. I actually did a REALLY good job by breaking it in not one, but
two places. Still, somebody might want to try to glue it back together and
stick it to their gym locker door or something. I certainly can't sell it.

I was out playing with the new hot rod on the week

the tires don't go bald.

I redid the web page with some nice shots from the

ENJOY I DID

I have the Sport Deluxe Beaumont home now and will
be starting it shortly. It is the equivalent to a SS

[Chevelle-list] 1968 Coming along

2003-09-29 Thread Dave Benjamin

I am putting together a 1968 Beaumont rather
quickly. It is similar to the chevelle.I am trying to put some of my parts in
one place so I have room to move in the real car for
winter.

This Winter

The real project is a number matching 1968
Beaumont SD (sport deluxe). This is the equivalent to a chevelle SS. I have also
located a 1968 396 that was pulled out of a 1968 Beaumont. They took that car
racing and put the motor hi and dry.

You can fallow progress on my web site if
interested.

When I picked up the cars to build a 69 chevelle, one was a 1968 Beaumont. I
wasn't planning to get any more because I have another car in a bodys barn,
another1968 Beaumont. With the 2 cars I should be able to make a nice driver.
Then my buddy found a 1968 Beaumont SD project and the price was right and I
have lots of parts for it so (What You Going To Do).

No one is reproducing the '68 dash bezels yet. The 69's (all three versions) just
became available this year. Now that the 69's are done, I suspect that the '68's will

You know it's scary when I actually figure the
length of time I have owned this car and what I/wehave gone through. First
it's a
SS,BB, four speed, posi,buckets, the
colour is Tripoli turquoisewith black trim.
I first saw the car at about 16 or 17, a girl from
my home townused to cruiseit with
another girl that drove ablack 63 vette. Guess I fell in love or lust with
the car or the girl first..not quite sure. A few years laterI saw the car
up on blocks in anapt. complex, inquired about it and bought it. Paid about $3000 can for it which for me
at the time was a lot. That was 24 years ago
The condition of the car was pretty good
other that the drive train. She had
replaced the 396 with a brand new427 425 horse short block and used
the 396 heads. When I got it had a very noticeable knock, no wonder. I later
found a set of brand new still in the box 427 open chamber cast heads for 50
bucks, bored it 30over changed the pistons and drove the crap out of it. Got
banned from two municipalities more tickets than I care to remember and had the
fastest mattress in town.Since then there are two kids a divorce, white
picket fences etc etc,you get the picture.
The carsat idle stored in a
garage for many yearsuntil the chance meeting of a mechanic who is one of
a kind. He's turned out to be a very good friend, no wonder, I gavehim
about $7000 on the drive train and that was just to cover the beer and
Crown Royal (that's a Can.thing)He's the one that talked me into restoring
back to stock. In British Colombia, Can we have a insurance rate that is called
collector status, that is what I am trying to achieve. Soget this; he
interviewed me to be a potential customer not the other way around. The car
today oddly enough is just about to be sprayed. New drive train, full inner
and outer 1/4 panels new bed(30 hours in the box alone).I could go
on for a long time and have some pretty funny stories but I fear this email is
getting rather lengthy. If you want to hear more drop me a line andI will
continue.

They are definitely softer than the OEM moldings. No body seems to be

The OEM wheel well moldings are stainless steel. The repros are plated
tin.
They are definitely softer than the OEM moldings. No body seems to be
repro-ing short wheel moldings for the 68 SS.

The repros may be anodized aluminum. I was told that the OEM ones are
stainless steel. When I get the OE ones in here, I never take them out of
the GM shrink-wrap, so I never really get a good look at them.

Both OE and repros are anodized aluminum. The quality of the repros leaves
something to be desired, however. I certainly prefer to use original GM
whenever possible, even though the cost is substantially higher and they're
more difficult to locate. BTW, the '68 SS396 did not have w/o moldings
installed at the factory.

FWIW, Just to toss some more fuel on the fire, I checked my GM PA book
and my CD from Detroit Iron and found the following:

 I
believe they (the '68 moldings) are a one year only part.
Here are the numbers listed in the assembly manual:

 3920149-50 Molding L. R.H. 13735-45

Model 13735 is a Concours wagon 6-cyl (13835 is a Concours V-8) but I
don't show a model number 13745 anything in either my GM model reference
chart or my Chevelle deciphering program.

 3920153-4 Molding L. R.H. 13500-600 13837-67-80

Model numbers 13500-13600 are generic meaning any Chevelle or Malibu
(135xx and 136xx) while the 13837-67-80 are SS specific. This coincides
with the data from my GM PA book although the part numbers are
different and that could just be numbers that often get superceded.

My book shows for the front in 8.132 group:
68 Concours - 3928435/436 L.H./R.H. MOULDING UNIT, wheelhouse opening
68 Malibu - 3955683/684 L.H./R.H. MOULDING UNIT, wheel opening (38)

And rear 12.116 group:
68 Concours - 7795053/054 L.H./R.H. rear wheel opening
68 Malibu (Spt. Sed.) - 7795076/077 L.H./R.H. rear wheel opening

I'd almost bet that if you found a PA book from say 75-76 era that went
back to 68 listings, the part numbers would be different still.

[Chevelle-List] 1968 SS wheel well moldings?

2002-12-16 Thread John Nasta
I just had a request from a guy looking for wheel well moldings for a 1968
SS Chevelle. He says that the SS moldings are shorter than the non-SS, and
that they only go as far down as the side body moldings. Well, I'm certainly
not an expert on the 68 SS, but I've never heard of any SS-only wheel well
moldings for that year. If anybody has a part number for such moldings, or
can confirm or deny their existence, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

John,

I was told recently by a friend of mine that the '68 SS did NOT come with the chrome
wheel moldings. Guys like to put them on for the look... maybe they cut them off from
a '69. In '69 they did come with the moldings. Maybe that's why there is no listing
for them.

John,

It appears as though the wheel open moldings are the same front or back.
The only difference being which side of the vehicle, left or right. Sounds
strange, but that is what I gathered from my GM parts manuals (8.132). So,
if the guy has an '68 SS Chevelle then he would need:
 (2) 3920153 L.H.
 (2) 3920154 R.H.
