Re: [Chevelle-list] Column to floor conversion

2003-09-07 Thread Trooper
Diane,
To attach the shifter cable to the tranny, you need a cable mount that
bolts to the trans pan and the correct trans shift lever for floor shift.
You will need to drill a hole in the tunnel to pass the cable through then
mount the cable in to the shifter base and attach to the shifter handle. You
should have a plate on the cable that covers the hole you drilled in the
tunnel.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Column to floor conversion

2003-09-07 Thread Michael Pell
You don't really need to purchase another steering column. The column shift
can be modified wiht a little effort and repaint.

Remove the entire shifter column
Remove the column shifter bar.
Disassemble most of the steering column.
Cut out the hump where the shifter bar attaches
Patch it with your favorite body patch material (bondo, fiberglass, etc).
Sand, smooth, repaint the whole steering column.
Re-install.

A floor shift column usually runs $100-$150. This might save you some $$$.

I've not done it personally, but have heard of others doing it. Maybe
someone else on the list will be able to comment also.

good luck,

Sounds like you have what you need. Your only missing a floor shift column
and the floor shift blank to cover up the indicator on the dash. I question
where is your neutral safety switch if you don't change the column right
away. I believe the shift rod still hooks to the column so in key off
position it is locked in park. There is a different lever on the trans for
both the floor shift cable and shift rod to the column, but that's about
it.

You didn't mention the console wiring harness, which you will need if you want

Also, do you have the gauges dash wiring harness? If not, you will need some
help with the wiring differences. Not a huge problem, you just need to know

Diane,
You'll need to first install mounts to the tunnel that the console screws
into. You can install them with sheetmetal screws but at the factory they
are welded and they are more stable and look nicer welded. Then screw the
console to these mounts and the mount on the shifter base. I could give you
exact measurements for a 69 on the mounts but mine is a 4 speed so I can't
tell you were the shifter needs to be mounted exactly.

I would also be interested in the measurements for mounting an automatic
console mounting bracket to the tunnel. In my case its for a 72 El Camino.
Anyone out there have their floor boards exposed and willing to make a
measurement? Next best thing would be the measurement to where the console
itself is, and then I could derive the bracket position. Tons of thanks to
you all.

one have to worry about the reverse lights?

OK mine have never worked since I got the car. It came with a TH350 and
column shifter that has been replaced with an aftermarket floor shifter. I
have no idea where the original reverse light switch is but assume its in
the column. The wiring harness to the rear is original but somewhat
butchered up at this point.

[Chevelle-list] Column to floor conversion - Backup lights

2003-09-06 Thread Dale McIntosh
Title: Column to floor conversion - Backup lights

Another question: When converting from column shifter to

floor shifter, does one have to worry about the reverse lights?

When you say worry about, it makes one wonder since you haven't had them operational anyway. Me neither in the 17 years I've owned my 67 G and now that I've converted to a 700R4, I want the damn things to work - just because. LOL! I honestly don't know where your backup light switch is but a wiring diagram would show you. Depending on the aftermarket shifter you have, you should be able to get (or rig) a micro switch to the shifter to operate you backup lights. That's what I'm going to do with my BM Quicksilver when/if I get around to it.
