Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring harness
Ken- If you’re thinking replacement, I can give you my experiences. I bought a kit from Painless, that was very involved to install. My original dash wiring had been “worked on” by every monkey with a pair of pliers since it was new. I went with the Painless kit because I have full aftermarket instrumentation in my dash. After having run complete new wires everywhere I realize I should have gotten the damaged harnesses from M&H and modified to suite. It would have been far less work. Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring harness
What is your definition of "short out" . Off the top of my head, those items are not on one fused circuit. I'd recheck for correct connections behind the dash and look for wires that are crushed between say the dash panel & frame. If more than 1 fuse blows, I'd replace one at a time & see what combination causes them to blow. Ken, Check your grounds. Had a similar problem when I put mine together. Make sure that there is no paint where the dash harness connects to the dash frame and also make sure that the dash frame is fee of paint where it mounts to the body. If your not sure, try jumping the harness ground to bare metal on the frame. Thanks,Dan Solomon Never be afraid to try something new. Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring harness
If it is a 70 there should be a bolt right in the middle of the plug. Once that is loosened (I don't recall if it comes all the way out or if it is captured) Then you can unplug the harness. You may have to wiggle and pull a bit, cause sometimes they get a bit cooked under there and nearly fuse together. Make sure you replace any of the grease you remove on the block, so that the connections will be resistant to moisture. -- Shawn On Aug 18, 2006, at 8:33 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: How does the wiring harness disconnect at the fire wall. does it just simply unplug or is there a latch or something holding it in. i've tried to unplug it but it does'nt seem to want to cooperate. RE: [Chevelle-list] Wiring Harness
Well, maybe. I don't think it is cheaper if they have to spend 30 to 60 minutes on the phone working through questions and tracing wires while you are both on the phone, which they have done with me 3 times. I also know that they are real picky about producing only factory exact harnesses. Even if you know that you wont need a certain wire/s they wont build custom harnesses. I don't know, maybe for what you pay you should get a drawing, but I sure did like talking to them direct, I got a lot of side questions answered about wiring and wiring configurations. They sure know their stufff. My 2 cents. Gene > Sorry, I still can't buy it and sounds like a copout. When I called they gave me a similar excuse. I agree that they should have something. They know the wires need to be there because you buy the harness specific to the year and options (w/gauges or w/o) but they can't take the time to write down where they go? RE: [Chevelle-list] Wiring Harness
I have been told, right or wrong that there were never any printed GM wiring diagrams for the SS dash option. Not sure why, but there just aren't any. Seems to be true, because I looked all over and never found one. I just cut the ring off and mounted a blade type connector in its place. I think that I took the old one apart (off the old harness) and reattached it to the new wire. Gene --- Begin Message --- I called them up and asked. It is for the Tach (very close Bob). Now I am wondering why none of my books (three different manuals) or the wiring guide (just a bunch of copies out of the manuals) don’t show any of the wiring for gauges. The books seem to assume you don’t have gauges… that has me a little worried about putting in my dash harness. I can do most things by memory but that’s a hell of a lot of wires. Now I just have to figure out if I can get an adapter to go from the blade oil switch to the little circular prong the cable wants to hook up to. Re: [Chevelle-list] Wiring Harness Choices
Rusty, The Painless kits are good for hot rods and custom applications, but don't come with most of the sockets, connectors, etc. We sell the Painless kits, but we alsocarry wiring harnesses made by M&H. We've found them to be the best quality, most-accurate reproduction wiring harnesses out there. They are just like the originals ...with brand new wires and connectors! Please contact me off-list for pricing. As far a manuals, I've found the factory assembly manuals to be the best reference. They not only have wiring diagrams, but also show how the wiring harnesses are routed through the car. Very good stuff! (We carry these, too). Actually one more thing, someone please tell me they changed the way the light bulbs plug into the gauges… those are very annoying with the original harness. JB

Hi all, I bought some harnesses from someone on here last year. I think it was Trevor from Auto Obsessions. If you're still on here, can you email me? I need a few more harnesses. Dan McIntoshStreet Metal FabricationsPavement Scraping 1964 Impala S.S.http://www.lowriderimpala.com

Hello all I'm thinking my 69 needs new wiring, there are way too many scotchlock splices and and wiring problems for my liking. My guess is it was a race car and someone tried to rewire it after it was stripped down. Anyway i'm interested in your opinions of different products.I'm thinking of American Autowire, a friend just got one of their kits for his 55 Chevy and it seems like a good setup. Any advice would be welcome.
