I've had a turbo charged Mustang before! It was fun, but it's not an instant
demand product. There is a tiny bit of lag. A Supercharger is positive,
although it does have to hit a certain boost level. When I drop the hammer
things happen. Ride in my 468 with the 8-71 BDSI'll bet on it VS a turbo
any day!!(GRIN) Bring it on!

No doubt blowers are sexy. But, a properly sized turbo will kick the snot

have to open your hood. :)

Yeah,I wish I had those kinds of problems. Am beginning to think a turbo
is
the way to go on my car's 355. It probably wouldn't cost any more than a
new 383 crate motor and would be a heckuva lot faster.

I'm not looking for that kind of compression. I haven't checked to see how
far the pistons come up, but I would be putting 64cc Vortecs on it.
Mostly, I just wondered how well that much overbore would work or if it
might cause overheating due to the thin walls. It is an '82 4 bolt with 4
eyebrow flat tops. Probably go with a comp 268 or so hydraulic cam, dual
plane and headers. Hoping for about 300 horses and decent torque.

I have a .030 over 350 in my 66. I updated the cooling system to
accommodate
the heating up problem. I used 9.5:1 pistons then used a set of
completely

reworked 64cc heads that were shaved to bring the compression ratio to
10.75:1 . I would suggest getting a good radiator preferable aluminum.
I'm
sure other people have other opinions. But this combination worked well
for

me. I also have an electric fan installed with an override switch for
driving in traffic. The switch bypasses the temp switch leaving the fan
run

continuously.

Hey guys, does anyone have any experience with a .060 350? I have a
chance

prone

to overheating. I've never built or ran one .060 over. It would be a mild

2005-11-14 Thread Craig Ellis
Cracks on BBC starter mounts are almost always the result of using the wrong
bolt. Starter bolts have knurling between the threads and the head that is
meant to fit tightly in the block to absorb the torque of the starter. The
bolts are different for each starter (auto, stick are different) and may
even differ from year to year. If you have an original starter, rebuild it
and reuse it and use the exact correct length and grade bolt. In other
words, use the original bolts...

Also, I have heard the bolts are no longer being produced. There are
companies out there that claim they have them, but they do not have the
correct bolt. The moral of the story is don't throw your old bolts out...

Ron I agree with you that GM really needs some new design engineers badly.
Maybe get some fresh college grads in there with some hot new ideas.
Hopefully not more rice burners though.
I haven't seen one in person yet but Chevy High Performance had a write up
about the HHR in their September issue and I think appearance wise it could
compete with the PT Cruiser. Perhaps for the person that wants some real
get up and go it will fall short, and they may have done something different
with the grill, but in all it has a decent appearance. I may check them out
and if they are as nice as the article made out I might try to talk the
company into getting me one when they replace my Windstar. The wife and
daughter will kill me if they do each time we have to move my daughter to
and from Purdue University though. The Windstar isn't huge, but compared to
our cars with the seats out and stacked to the ceiling it will carry a lot.

I have to agree with you Ron.
Pontiac had a great idea...I just wish that they weren't stuck on having
everything look like a Grand Am
It seems that GM really needs help in it's design department, I cant think
of a nice looking vehicle (Corvette is the exception) that they are
currently producing, certainly nothing that makes the style headlines like
the Mustang, PT Cruiser, Magnum, 300.
It seems that Mopar has all the style, Ford has the retro, and GM is left
with the LaCrosse (or is that really just an ugly Taraus?), the HHR's,, The
Vue, and the H3. (not even THINKING about the Avalanche)
What the H3ll are they thinking? If it weren't for the trucks and the SUV's
they would have gone out of business long ago, and as far as I am concerned,

they haven't made any nice looking trucks since 2002!
Sorry if I have stepped on any toes, but I remember when GM meant the best
looking AND the best performing vehicles. I wish they would go back to
leading instead of being content to fall to the wayside.

you may think that about the GTO, but the 05' with the 6.0L vette engine
will beat down the charger no matter what engine you get with it. for the
money you cant get a charger for 30k with the good engine. the mustang is

performance wise i'll keep my new goat and can beat almost anything on the

Too bad it beats anything the General has for the same kind of money
(unless
you want a truck)...and IMO it has better styling then the GTO. GM should
had gone the way Ford did with the new Mustang instead of going after the
tuner crowd (would a tuner know what to do with a v8?)

Yes they do look better...and they do perform. I would just like to see GM
step up and do something special with it. Look what our options are from
them for a V8, rear wheel car - a truck (have a '04 Tahoe), Corvette (a lot
of money), GTO, and a Cadillac CTS-V (I drove a friend's CTS-V and it
rocked, but again a lot of money).

My family will be in the market for a new ride sometime soon ('bout time to
get rid of the DeVille - the old man car) and I'm just not seeing anything
on the GM side that fits the bill.

you may think that about the GTO, but the 05' with the 6.0L vette engine
will beat down the charger no matter what engine you get with it. for the
money you cant get a charger for 30k with the good engine. the mustang is
cheaper then the gto yes but hey its you that has to drive it if you buy
it.

performance wise i'll keep my new goat and can beat almost anything on the
road. also everytime i'm at a stoplight i always get heads turning to
look
at it. so much for it being vanilla i guess.

Too bad it beats anything the General has for the same kind of money
 (unless
you want a truck)...and IMO it has better styling then the GTO. GM
should
had gone the way Ford did with the new Mustang instead of going after
the
tuner crowd (would a tuner know what to do with a v8?)

I don't think any offense was taken,Ron. The 04 GTO was kinda bland. Don't
the 05 models have the new scooped hood?
The new 400hp LS2 engine doesn't hurt anything,either.

Didn't mean offend by my comments, but to me the styling of the
 current

is rather bland. GM has a great plateform to build from, they just
 have
not

in 72, nothing in the VIN ID's an SS. UNLESS the engine digit is a W
. W is for 454 and the only 72 chevelle to get the 454 was the SS.
More than likely its a clone.

2005-02-15 Thread mike f
Dan, I wanted to add my thoughts as I had several
things chromed over the years. You, pretty much, have
the price range. $200 or so per bumber is about right.
I used a company called Superior in Houston. They go
to the DFW swap meets. I also used a Harley shop
called Show-n-go chrome. You might want to think about
that. Bikes are real popular these days and if the
bumpers don't not need any work, that might be a good
option. Otherwise find a company that can fix the
bumper right and then chrome it so it will last. Hope
this helps

regards
mike

it was my worst experence in chroming i have ever had!!!

they redid my bumper 3- times and kept adding more chrome plate to it each time- by the 3rd time it was coming off in sheets, i sent some small parts with the bumper to be done and they lost them all- promised to refund my money- never did

The price varies from shop to shop.. I have used Tri-City Plating in
Tenn. over the years..They go to major shows in the East coast..There
cost is about $220 a piece. aprox. Plus shipping. My last set took 4 weeks
turn around.. There plating is top shelf. and guaranteed for life !
I had a problem with a 65 bumper and they replaced it ( exchange) no
problem... I exchanget it at one of the Carlisle PA shows.

A repop is cheaper for sure. you need no core .. I helped install a set of

repop (goodmark) on a 70 Chevelle , just after the new year. Te chrome is
not a deep and the metal lighter then original but all in all IMO a good
bang for the BUCK...

I'm trying to find some place in Houston, TX area. There are several places
that do industrial chrome, but I need to find one that doesn't mind doing
car bumpers on the side!

I found Allied Powder Coating in Houston for my 12 Bolt rear end..They did a
great job, with a 2 week turn around. Now, I hope I can find something
similar in Re-Chroming!

I had mine done locally. Cost was $175 each. Not a deep show chrome,
but a very nice job. Probably closer to original than the show
chrome.

I had mine done locally. Cost was $175 each. Not a deep show chrome,
but a very nice job. Probably closer to original than the show
chrome.

I installed the switch motor from an 80 camaro in my 72 elky. Works
just like factory. I have hidden wipers they do PARK in correct
location.

MIST - Sweeps 2X then Parks

DELAY - Time adjustable sweep.

Lo - Low speed

HI- High speed much faster than my original motor.

More info pics here:

Apparently you can use an early 80's truck setup also.

But the car gets a couple floor patches in the spring and the dispite the pics it has a few bubbles in the lower quarters and one on the passenger door... so she isn't mint (I would never want to subject a mint SS or even a mint/clean chevelle to the abuse I put her through on the track. Body panels would never stay 100% straitght). So I figured one winter outside would be ok. I don't know if 71 and 72
are interchangeable for inner fenders or where you live in the USA, but I
checked out a web site yesterday called : www.autoobsession.com
that sells both new and used parts, specializing in Chevelles and El Caminos,
and they are parting out a 71 2 door Chevelle (which is what I have).
They also claim they will beat the prices of any of the big
catalogs if you send them an e mail with a parts list.

Anybody else ever heard of
or used these guys ?

Who do you all recommend
for parts ? I've heard Year One has the best resto prices. True ?
Opinions ? Advice? We just bought our 71 Chevelle a few weeks ago and
plan on spending the winter restoring it. We will, by the way be selling a
complete white bench seat interior, including door panels, head liner, seats,
etc. because we are converting to black buckets. Anybody have black
interior for 71 they want to sell ?

There is NO vacuum--if anything there is crankcase pressure. The only
place you will see vacuum is in the intake ports. Seal it let it set for
4~6 hrs to allow the RTV to cure. It will not seal in the presence of oil.

Use brake cleaner-carb cleaner will leave a petroleum residue that the RTV
won't stick to. Once it sets up then you can spray carb cleaner on it to
clean up the oil that leaked--it won't hurt, but I prefer brake cleaner for
all cleaning.

Just want to add a little tid-bit to troopers info.. If you do use high Temp
RTV after you run a read on the front and rear eng block.. let it sit up(
cure) awhile b-4 you plop the intake on
Why,, because RTV floats and if it wet and runny and the intake compresses
it in a runny form , it will blob inside the block get in the oil pan and
get sucked up in the oil pump... and Oil
Pumps hate rubberized RTV..

Tom just an FYI on the intake leak. That is an extremely common place
for leaks if you use the rubber front and rear gaskets. The remedy is
not to use them. Just place a bead of RTV along the front and rear and
bolt the intake down. This technique will also eliminate vacuum leaks
that I have seen because the rubber gasket holds the intake too high in
 the saddle.

I installed the intake exactly as you described, ie, I didn't use rubber
gaskets in the front and rear of the manifold, just black high temp RTV per
the Edelbrock installation guide. I was also very careful not to adjust the
manifold after laying it down.

I'm going to try cleaning it up and putting some RTV in the spot where the
leak is. There is a small indentation in the RTV in that spot, so I'm hoping
I might get lucky. I figure it can't hurt. The leak is slow enough so that
the oil that accumulates on the starter wires (actually the wire loom) is'nt
enough to form a drop after a week of driving. I'm not even 100% sure that's
where the oil is coming from, but I can't see anywhere else it could be
coming from.

Diane,
Yes you have to because you will then be putting the staple through the
predrilled hole in the dust shield (I've never tried to press the staples
through the thick rubber W/O a predrilled hole. ) then the inner finder and
bend them over with pliers on the inner fender side. The only two I've done
had new dust shields and new inner fenders so they both needed drilled. I
just placed the shield where I wanted it and drilled both at the same time.
With holes already in your inner fenders I would advise have a second person
hold the shield where you want it the drilling from the inner fender side
into the engine compartment using the fender well holes as a guide.

2003-07-28 Thread Diane Peppin
Thanks trooper, thank you all in fact. I've learned allot here today.
This is a great little forum. Was there a website that goes with these
emails, or is it just a list of Chevelle owners who get to chat? I can't
thank you enough for the instant responses. I hope to have pictures
later this year to show off my ride. I too wouldn't mind checking out
Sarge's car. I'll bet his dad is really gonna flip when he sees it in
the garage! Goodnight all!

So am I!
I was really looking forward to Mantorp actually meet one of you guy's
that been so helpful, and to cruise around in Stockholm Sweden a bit.
So far it's only been transports between different garages.
That's taken the edge of the joy to at last owning a cool classic a bit. :-(
Hopefully Things will get better soon as I plan to rearrange my whole living
situation!
I'm planning to move back to my hometown area, buy a house with a nice
garage.
I'm already applying for jobs up there.

Best regards
Pelle

Sorry, but have to skip Mantorp this year as well. We should drive Comp

   Hi!
Sorry! I have to skip Mantorp!
I have a bit of a situation here when it comes to cash!
Spent far too much money on the car this last month, I'm approx $400
 short.
Hopefully I'll get most of it back from a club I paid for a garage spot.
I paid them 3 months In advance before realizing I can't afford that
kind
 of money
for a garage spot, but they promised me that I'll get a 2 month refund
 (fingers crossed)
So my car's back where my mom live, got a garage spot there at a car
 reconditioner for $20 a month.
Sadly this makes it a bit harder to work with the car at the moment :-(

   Best regards
   Pelle

Too much will foam. And this will cause some parts of the trans to
not
get fluid. Start with 2.5 liters. I think that's 3 quarts. You should have
drive with that amount. Then do what I wrote in the reply about running
your
engine. You don't know if this is a good trans? Did you just install it?
Did
you fill the torque converter. That will also cause it to not engage. If
you
failed to fill the converter add a 1/2 quart at a time while the engine is
running and let the pump fill the converter. Not the best way to do this
though. Keep check the dip stick. If you put too much you can siphon it
out.

When we put it back together we started with adding 3 liters( I
think it is about 6 pints) to it, then we started up the car. We checked
the
level and had to add 3 more. To me I think this is too much but I don't
 know??

Can you mess it up with too much oil???

We don't know for sure if this was a good transmission. Joe was
told
it was, and it was in the car when we got it.

Dave, it sounds like you don't have enough fluid in the trans.
If
the fluid level is low especially when cold, complete loss of the forward
gears will result. Run the engine at a fast idle with the trans in park
for
about 2-3 minutes. Let the idle come down and check the fluid level. Be
sure
you use DEXRON to fill it and the car is sitting on level ground. Keep the
engine running while you fill it. If all you did was drain the pan add 3
quarts then check the level as described above. One thing to keep in mind
is
there is only 1 pint difference between the add and full mark on the dip
stick. This will be a cold reading so after you drive the car and get the
trans up to temp. check it again. There is not much you can move or
disconnect just working on the parking pawl so this has to be your
problem.
Be sure you used a new O ring on that dip stick tube or you may have a
 leak..

I think part of the problem GM has with the data from the 60's and 7
0's is
the recordkeeping systems in place at that time. That era used IBM p
unch
cards for input and magnetic tape for long term storage. No Windows,
 no
email, no nothing. In order to review the info, you had to write an
Easytrieve program and print it out. A lot of those records are/w
ere
 kept
only to address disagreements with the IRS. I know this because I on
ce was
responsible for the EDP audits for a number of GM operating units an
d am
very familiar with their systems from the early 80's onward. I was t
he
 poor
  sap writing the Easytrieve code...

So, a lot of the records we would love to see were never converted f
rom
their old format to modern formats. It's worthwhile to consider what
 an
expensive task that would be and that they would never spend the mon
ey on
 it
unless they were forced to (as in an IRS issue). Also, we are talkin
g
 about
  MOUNTAINS of information -
not just build stats but warranty claims (which
are all tracked by VIN) for millions and millions of cars over decad
es.
 And
all of this information is comingled. It's not like there is one t
ape
 out
there somewhere with a summary of the build data on it. Considering
the
quantity, it's amazing they bother to retain any info at all. Also,
it is
entirely possible the mag tapes they wrote the data out on for stora
ge
simply deteriorated and became unreadable. This is a common problem.
 These
tapes are often stored, literally, in caverns tunneled out of mounta
ins in
  Utah, etc. No kidding -
I've been there. They put the tapes in and forget
  about them for twenty years.

They put the tapes in and forget
   about them for twenty years.

painted black on 1968 SS cars, they also have a specific rocker molding that

Re: [Chevelle-List] Re: Chevelle-List PASS THIS ON

2002-05-04 Thread pablo

Passing this along to you Cousin. I am not trying to fuel an argument or
anything but I think this could be considered as a Patriot's view of a few
things. I would support this Americanism'ism. I think the America that
immigrates built in the last century and a half was based on the
Constitution and a belief in God and a desire to be American.

I guess I see my self as Christian American Patriot and I pay my dues; have
all my life. When people are upset because some are being hassled because
of their ethnic appearance or are being put through terrible ordeals in the
name of National Security maybe they should think of the young men who were
drafted for two or more years in to the U.S. military to fight in Viet Nam.
That is just one of the costs of freedom I can think of.

 My $ .02 worth.

ONLY IN FLORIDA --- LAND OF TERRORIST 'S

After hearing that the state of Florida changed its opinion and let a
Muslim woman have her picture on
her drivers license with her face covered, I believe this is even more
 appropriate. \

Read on, please! ...This is an Editorial written by an American
citizen, published in a Tampa Newspaper.
He did quite a job; didn't he??

 IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT.

I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some
 individual or their culture. Since
the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in
patriotism by the majority of Americans.
However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the
 politically correct crowd began complaining
about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.

I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who
is seeking a better life by coming
to America. Our population is almost entirely composed of descendants of
immigrants. However, there are a few
things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently
some born here, need to understand. This
idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to
dilute our sovereignty and our national
identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our
own language and our own lifestyle.

This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and
victories by millions of men and
women who have sought freedom. We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Arabic,
 Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or
any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our
 society, learn the language!

In God We Trust is our national motto. This is not some Christian,
 right wing, political slogan. We
adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian
 principles, founded this nation,
and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it
on the walls of our schools.
If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world
 as your new home,
because God is part of our culture.

If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you
 should seriously consider a
move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and
 have no desire to change,
and we really don't care how you did things where you came from.

This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment
 gives every citizen the right
to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so
ONLY after you become a citizen.
But, once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag,
 our pledge, our national motto,
or our way of life, I highly encourage you to take advantage of one
 other great American freedom,
 THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

Please pass this along if you agree.
