Great story John. I believe that you will honor your friend his dad by
your treatment of the car. One thing about the Camaro steering box. I
don't believe that it is the best choice for you. As I understand things,
the internal stops of the camaro box will limit your turning radius. You
will not be able to make a sharp turn, in or out of a parking space or tight
corner. I know from experience :) .

From what I've read at the suspension brake forum at Chevelle Tech, a
better choice would be the box from either a 85-87 or so Monte Carlo SS
(hard to find) or a 94-99 (or so) Jeep Grand Cherokee. If you go here:
http://www.chevelles.com/techref/index.html and read Jim Sheas info (hes a
GM chassis engineer), he explains why a whole lot better than I can.

As for the big rear brakes, 75-78 el caminos and some 76-77 Malibus/Monte
Carlos seem to be a fairly reliable source.

The cool thing about the car is that it belonged to a buddy of mine. It is
a very straight (in need of A LOT of love though) 64 Chevelle Malibu SS that
was the first one sold off the show room floor from a local dealership. My
buddy's dad bought it as the only nice / new thing he ever owned. My buddy
really doesn't even like american cars, but it had so much sentimental value
to him that when I offered years ago to start redoing it for him if I could
borrow it occasionally and take it to Hot August Nights in Reno, he said
that it would be like loaning me his wife... needless to say, I never asked
again. I did talk to him years later about leaving it to me in his will
because he would be done with it and I wanted to see it go to some one who
would appreciate what it meant to him. Several months ago he said that
things were changing in his life, he was planning on moving out of the house
that his grandfather built, that he had not touched the chevelle for 4 years
and that it had sat under a tarp in our little beach town and that he would
never get to start working on it again due to time , finances and other
things. He asked me if I still wanted it since he thought it would be
better for me to get it while I had time to work on it and enjoy it. When I
came to look at it, his wife said Oh, you are willing to take the old car
out of the back yard for us?. It pained me how little she understood or
appreciated what the chevelle meant to my buddy. When I picked it up with
my trailer, I had only driven for 5 minutes before I had an offer to buy it
as is. Needless to say, it is never going up for sale. My buddy also
thanked me repeatedly for taking his car from him. Needless to say I
thanked him repeatedly for giving me his mostly original 64 chelle malibu
ss. He rebuiltthe suspension and gace it better springsand shocks. He also
converted it to a 68 350 and a super t-10. I am obviously changing the
brakes. A norcal chevelle-camino club member turned me on to a camaro
steering box to quicken the steering. The entire body has surface rust (and
rust through on the leading edge of the hood) so I am going to strip it and
change the color from dark green to black. I am going to put AR torq thrust
d 15x7 in wheels. The inetrior could used some work and I just saw a white
65 with these really cool SS logo seats that I forgot to ask the owner
where he got them. Other wise, I want it to be a clean straight car that my
buddy would be proud of. I of course originally had some visions of 13 inch
brakes a 6-71 blower but after finding out the complete history on the
car, I just would not have the heart, and the car deserves more respect.

Kinda a cool car and a wonderful place to start a resto. Thanksagain for

Rick,
Thanks for the link.
Not sure I'd seen the gearbox chart before.
(never would have guessed Jeep!)
I bought what I was told was a 74 Trans-Am box to put in my 64.
It seemed to work ok.
I had those 245/50R16 T/A's on all four wheels so if it did limit the turn angle that
might have been a good thing; accidental engineering. : )
Is that letter code metal stamped or was that an ink stamp on end cover? I painted it
so not sure where to look on box.
How does one decide for sure if it's a variable ratio box? It's out of car in a box at
the moment.
I guess everyone knows you're supposed to use the Chevelle power steering pitman arm
when you do these swaps.
(fun fact: 64's had 4 different arms - 2 for manual and 2 for PS boxes - ID'd by the
center link diameter, 13/16 or 7/8)

Of your couple questions, the only one I know for sure is that the 2 letter code is a
paint or ink stamping. Its NOT into the metal, just like a stencil on (I believe) the
bottom cover. Honestly I've never actually found a stamping that was readable, but
I've only looked at half a dozen or so steering boxes.

The stops in the saginaw 800 steering box. The shoulder on the aluminum end
cap is the easy one, just turn it down. The split ring at the other end of the
bore requires disassembly. Advance auto parts has the rebuild kit for under
$40 and it helps to have a camaro shop manual. I power washed mine the WA

Yeah, that was kinda the story on mine. My cousin (a year older than me)
bought it new in the summer of '64, then passed away Christmas of '65. His
Mom and Dad (my favorite aunt and uncle) kept the car and drove it a lot.
Then, along about 1989 my aunt got afraid she was gonna wreck it so it was
parked under a carport with a cover on it. The took care of it but it
wasn't driven... It took me 13 years of begging to get her to sell it to me.
I had to promise to keep the car until she passes away... It was kind of
their shrine to their son.

As Clint mentioned, discs weren't available on Chevelles
until 67 but the better setups came on 69-72s. The 67 and 68 units, in
most people's opinion, are better left to those restoring their cars as they
weren't as good as the later units. Nice thing, any A-body (Tempest,
Cutlass, Buick) should work. A lot of aftermarket mfgs sell complete disc
kits for $600-$800 complete with all new pieces.

John, Master Power Brakes (mpb.com) has a great setup with 11x2 drums,
metalic/ceramic pads, and the best part is that it is all assembled onto the
new backing plate, simply take off the old plates, install the new. They
claim it is better than aftermarket rear discs. I can't compare to the disc
claim, but they are INCREDIBLE on my Malibu. They use all stock valves and
lines. Factory direct they are only $395. Quite a deal considering it is all
new with warranty. Definitely worth every penny on my car, I can't say
enough. Well worth considering in my opinion.

the brakes came from, but it will all be fine. Thanks one and all. Now
for
my next problem, I understand that I can easily put bigger drums on the
back
(very inexpensively) from another car, maintain the balance with the dual
resevoir master cylinder, a disc / drum prop valve etc but have
significantly better stopping power. Any suggestions for which make the
best donor cars for this type of swap? Thanks again to one and all who
have
been so helpful on this quest.

Doesn't someone make disc brake kits to go on stock spindles?
Maybe that's what he meant?

Disc brakes weren't available until 1967. I'm sure
you know that,though.

  Hi
  Gang,
   it's me again. I found a
nice person witha nice 65 brake set up that he claims is stock and 11 inch
rotors. I am trying to upgrade my 64 chevelle drum front end to discs,
but deciede to go with the "tall" spindle conversion. Contrary to what
the seller claims, I have heard that the 65 chevlee came with the same size
spindle as a 64 and a 10 inch rotor. Before I drive up there and look at
it / buy it, I would greatly appreciate anput as to whether this gentle man is
correct or if the web sites I have seen are correct.
  Thanks.

members of the local chevelle camino club who's meeting I went to last
saturday. I asked him several times and he kept telling me the same
thing. I think I am gonna hafta have another talk with him
tommorrow. Thanks. Johnz(:-)
