Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)

2011-05-03 Thread Rick Schaefer
No, I've never tried an anodizing kit, I did use an anodizing remover
(BlueLightning Brand) with success. 10-15 years ago I polished the lower
trim on my elky, and the polish job was pretty good, but not great. To
protect it, I spray the pieces with a clear coat product from Eastwood.
The look lasted for a bit, but at this point needs to be redone. I am
currently trying to find time to strip and paint the Elky and when it comes
time for the trim I'll need to make a decision about which way to go, either
D-I-Y or let a pro do it. Cost will definitely be a factor.

For the hood trim, I'm assuming its Pot Metal, check with Superior Plating
or Superior Chrome out of Houston. I left the 2 forward corner trim pieces
from the bed with them this past weekend. Their estimate at the swap meet
was reasonable compared to repro trim and I know that they fit.
As for the bumper $400 does not seem too far out of line for a show
finish.Check with TriCity (I think that is the name) out of Tennesse,
they come highly recommended in the chevelletech forums. Again, with
original you know that there should not be fitment issues.

I know that there are people on this list who know a lot more about this
than I so hopefully someone else will check-in.

Have you ever tried the do it yourself anodizing kits? It is it possible to
do a grill? I don’t mind spending the time polishing them, I just want them
to look good when finished. My chrome moldings are pitted so all the polish
in the world won’t save them so I will need to have them re-plated or
replaced. Any suggestions on where to send re-plating, the places I have
used in the past have gotten way out of line on price, they want over $300
to re-plate the molding down the center of the hood and the bumper exchange
that we use is at about $400 a bumper. The new replacement bumpers are only
 $169.

The cloudy finish on the aluminum is the anodizing coating. The anodizing
needs to be removed before the parts can be polished. If you want to
polish them yourself, you can order anodizing remover from many sources (
caswellplating.com for one). Or if you have them polished by a pro,
he/she will know what to do. Then once they are polished, they should be
re-anodized to maintain the finish. Doing it yourself is not rocket
science but it is plenty of work.

As for replacement pieces, its generally recommended to keep your originals
and have them redone. Fit on replacement parts is hit or miss at best.

have all the original aluminum moldings for the trunk and hood and the grill
but they are all cloudy, can these be polished or re anodized or am I better
off with new moldings. I don’t want to order new ones and have a fit and

I assume you've gone from a 64 bit OS to a 32 bit and that the program

your computer has a 64 bit CPU, as most new ones do, you could install
Wndows 64 bit (from your address I assume your running Windows).

Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)

2010-06-03 Thread Dale
It could be that no vendors are advertising it or even offering it; maybe
because Windows Virtual PC no longer requires a hardware enabled CPU to run
in XP or 32-bit mode as Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 did - apparently two
different products. 64-bit is pretty much becoming the standard for new PCs
and CPUs. I bought Windows 7 Pro a few months ago and it comes with both
32- and 64-bit DVDs. I installed the 64-bit version initially. That's when
I discovered you needed a CPU with hardware virtualization to run 32-bit
programs with Virtual PC 2007. So, I reloaded the drive with the 32-bit
version so I could run my old software.

Now that Windows Virtual PC is not suppose to be hardware dependant I may
reinstall the 64-bit version and test it. On the MS website they still show
32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Home Premium for sale.

In either case I'm sure you need the Pro version to run Windows Virtual PC
as I just tried to download the software to my laptop (with 64-bit home
version) and got a dialog box saying I needed the Pro version to run it.

No difference as far as form and function. The only difference is the obvious,
ones with bleeders can be used to bleed the master with the lines hooked up. If
no bleeders you have to unhook the lines to bleed it.

The best deal for packages under 1 pound is USPS Priority Mail at
$4.60 to anywhere in the U.S. in 2-3 business days. However, for the
shipper it is often less convenient to ship USPS. That rate does not
include tracking or the automatic $100 insurance that you get w/
UPS/FedEx, and it often requires sending somebody to stand in line at
the post office, and of course an employee's time costs money

John I know that the PO now has carrier pickup you can buy print the
postage online. I haven't used it myself so it may not be as convenient as
the commercials my carrier says it is. www.usps.com

But no matter who you are buying from/shipping with, it stinks to pay
more for shipping handling than the item cost you. I almost always wait
to consolidate my order OR go looking for more to buy to make it
worthwhile.

John I know that the PO now has carrier pickup you can buy
print the postage online. I haven't used it myself so it may not
be as convenient as the commercials my carrier says it
is. http://www.usps.com/www.usps.com

Yep, I use USPS, print my labels they pick it up. I can ship up to 70
lbs that will fit in their priority mail box for $8.95.

Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)

2008-01-27 Thread John Nasta
I have not checked into the pickup situation either. Priority Mail is
pretty convenient for small stuff, especially with the new flat rate
boxes. Like you said, anything you can fit into that box goes for that
rate (presumably, and as long as it's legal).

For bigger items though I find that FedEx Ground has better rates than
UPS, but I don't have a UPS account or any discount with them, so I
guess I get the tourist rate with them.

I have a package place about a block and a half away that I just drop
stuff off at. I put my own label on it and FedEx picks it up there.

Don't forget about the new USPS 13-ounce rule (any package over 13
ounces has to be taken to the customer counter at the post office). I
don't know how it affects pickups. I wonder if that's nationwide or
just here because we have public street mailboxes for outgoing mail...

$24 to ship a door latch?? Yeah I would put that in the category of
ridiculous. I can say that because I am a shipping manager at work and I know
what it costs to ship something that small and light across the
country..about $11, yes that would be from NJ to CA which is 5 days UPS
Ground. To ship the same thing 1 day UPS Ground is about $5.

2008-01-26 Thread John Nasta
I don't know about UPS but with FedEx, Ground (to a business) is
cheaper than Home Delivery (to a residence). Even a local (next
county) package less than one pound costs about $8.50 - $9.00 for
Home Delivery, maybe $5 to $6 Ground. Having said that, I usually
find FedEx Home Delivery to be less expensive than UPS Ground. Of
course this also depends on the business and what deal they have with
their shipper. Presumably OPGi is in a position to negotiate a good
rate.

The best deal for packages under 1 pound is USPS Priority Mail at
$4.60 to anywhere in the U.S. in 2-3 business days. However, for the
shipper it is often less convenient to ship USPS. That rate does not
include tracking or the automatic $100 insurance that you get w/
UPS/FedEx, and it often requires sending somebody to stand in line at
the post office, and of course an employee's time costs money.

Still, $22 - $24 seems exorbitant for shipping a door latch, assuming
you live in the continental US.

Residential deliveries with UPS are always a dollar and some change higher
than commercial addresses. The other thing I forgot to add in is that some
companies, particularly OPG, like to base their shipping charges on dollar
value. UPS packages are automatically insured up to $99, anything after
that is a charge of about 75 cents per $100 of value. They also like to
rape you for items going oversize. I can say that oversize charges are not
$10 per piece, more like $2.

You can try Year One who is having a Thanksgiving Day only online 15% off
sale put TDBS in the promo code box or sale code box. Another one is
C.A.R.S. Inc. they make a lot of their own interior products. There are a
lot of other companies out there but I have had good luck with both of
these. To be honest I do not remember any of the restoration companies
having parts specifically for 4 door models. A lot of the parts from the 2
doors will be interchangeable with the four door. C.A.R.S., Inc. might be a
good one to look up and then phone and talk to, if they can't help you they
may be able to put you in the right direction. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Caterpillar: Confidential GreenRetain Until: 12/12/2007

Awhile back I posted that my wife is retiring soon and did remark as
how a retired grandma looked good in a Cadillac. So I immediately
began looking for a 1959 Cadillac project. Scored one last night on
Ebay and got it for less than I was willing to spend, good thing it is
only about a 25 mile trip to load it on the trailer and back to my
shop. Exactly what I was looking for, 62 Series, 4 door, pb pw a/c ps,
has some rust issues in the normal places on these cars but is
complete, just needs to be a frame off job done. Anyway I know it
isn't what we all thrive on, but I've done a 72 El Camino and a 72
Monte Carlo so time for something different. Well, other then the 1944
B B Farmall I'm currently restoring and the 1968 Montgomery Ward's
250cc Touring Motorcycle which is finished and being ridden.

Just wanted to put something out to read as it is really slow.

2007-11-12 Thread Michael Pell

Speaking of old hearses

When I was in Little League (some 30 years ago), my Dad had acquired a
early 60s or so Caddy Hearse. As I recall, he traded a stack of
Playboys about 4' tall. This became his beer run machine, as they (the
Jaycees) could put a lot of cases in there.

For an away Little Leage game, he cleaned out the old hearse, and we
used it to drive the entire team to the away game. And he let us take
shoe polish over the entire car! it was a hoot!

And if memory serves, he traded it off for a shotgun.

2007-11-12 Thread Devin
I’ll add to the off subject list. I went out yesterday afternoon and made
some corners wayyy too fast in the 63 Corvair ( Nader lied, they handle
great) then came home and fired off the camino for the first time since
April. Fiddled with the timing some and got frustrated, so I went to
installing the new carpet I’ve had sitting here waiting patiently for about
8 years. All in good time ya know….

The factory literature does not include the 4 when using model numbers.

5680 is the Custom El Camino w/ V-8, 5580 with 6 cyl.
see below for a factory pic:

The wheel opening and rocker trim is the same as an SS except for the rear qtr

I had mine straightened and polished a few years ago. You could try
looking locally for someone specializing in stainless steel trim. If
you don't have any luck, I have seen some shops recommended on Team

The oil light is looking for a ground. It has power all the time with the
key in the on position, and when you start the motor get pressure, a switch
inside the sending unit opens takes the ground away and the light goes out.

1- Wire from light to sending unit is shorted to ground. Disconnect wire at
sending unit. , if light stays ON all the time, you probably have a short to
ground between light unit.It COULD be the ground you added - disconnect
it and see what the light does.

2 - Bad sending unit - switch inside does not open - easy to isolate.
Disconnect the wire to the sending unit. Lite should be OUT with key ON -
ground the wire you disconnected from sending unit, light should go ON.

My guess that the ground you added is also grounding the oil pressure light.

Glad that you got it. Its frequently something that we do to
ourselves.Re your troubleshooting Item 3 - Do NOT check continuity
with power on. First you don't get an accurate reading - your no signal
shows that. Second you can burn out your meter.

The oil light is looking for a ground. It has power all the time with
the key in the on position, and when you start the motor get pressure, a
switch inside the sending unit opens takes the ground away and the light
goes out.

1- Wire from light to sending unit is shorted to ground. Disconnect wire
at sending unit. , if light stays ON all the time, you probably have a
short to ground between light unit.It COULD be the ground you added -
disconnect it and see what the light does.

2 - Bad sending unit - switch inside does not open - easy to isolate.
Disconnect the wire to the sending unit. Lite should be OUT with key ON -
ground the wire you disconnected from sending unit, light should go ON.

My guess that the ground you added is also grounding the oil pressure
light.

If it has been wrapped up for the past 20 years I'd see if it'll turn

any rust. Maybe get it in writing that if (when) you pull the heads that
there won't be any rust buildup around the rings. I'm sure it hasn't been

Joe, It's a 327/350 HP L79. Highly sought after. Fairly low production.
Sounds like you found a good one. If you don't want it let me know where it
is and how to contact the owner. If it's all original and in reasonable
condition it should be worth over $30,000. maybe more. My buddy paid $32,000
for his five years ago. It was in OK and he had been looking for one for
years. It is now a musuem piece.
My best friend growing up ordered one in 66. Silver with a black painted

Hey guys, I just thought I would share my day with
you guys.
My present frame off is my 69 convertible SS, but 4
years ago I did a complete restoration on a Plymouth
Superbird. For the last year I have been trying to get
in touch with Richard Petty who of course made the car
famous in nascar in 1970.
It finally happened and that day was today. I met up
with him at his museum, and he was a pleasant and
great person, of course he had the big cowboy hat,
dark sunglasses and cowboy boots, typical Petty, he
spoke to me about his early racing years, and he
signed my dash. Now my car is complete.
I visited the museum while I was there, lots of great
stuff.
What a good day this was, thank you guys for letting
me share this with the group..
Joe P.
