Re: [CinCV] cinelerra problem with stability

2012-05-10 Thread Valentina Messeri

Ciao Raffaele!

allora: the loss compression of the ogg files you're trying to use
it's the point; so, If you don't have any other footage to use you'd
better encode ogg to, for example dv.

How?
Well, as you said you're not very expert try this recipe:
install kino, mplayer, mencoder then open your ogg files with kino (to
do that kino itself transcode that ogg file to dv).
This way you'll have an heavier file with same quality but without
compatibility problems.

A question...dis you use ogg, or any other loss compression files,
when editing with windows or mac?

have a nice day!

I installed cinelerra on my pc
I have ubuntu 11.10
I followed these instructions:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cinelerra-ppa/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinelerra

that is all I did. When I try to use it it turns off by itself and
give me messages such as the screenshot I attached
I do not know what to do. I am not very expert of Linux, I just
abandoned window and mac to start a new life. Help me.

thanks

Re: [CinCV] Rendering with Cinellera

2012-04-23 Thread Valentina Messeri

Should I be looking at rendering the Video and Audio streams separately?

yes, good choice

If so, what settings should I use (perhaps .mpg video and

.mpg audio?).

better use yuv4mpegstream for video and maybe ac3 for audio, for
compability issues, although mpeg audio can be used as well...

If I do that, how do I combine the streams into a
standard NSTC style .mpg file containing audio and video compatible
with the .mpg used to create DVDs and in perfect synchronization?

with mplex or ffmpeg

When I use ffmpeg to import video from a DVD, I usually use the
option -b 8500 to get good quality video (which results in q=2,
which is the best if I understand correctly).

dunno if i understood properly but if you're using footage from dvd
you can directly import it from cinelerra timeline (mpegtoc) and avoid
an intermediate transcode (in order no to loose quality)

I want to lose as little quality as is practical when I render the
video -- I want the output quality to be no worse than that of the
original input .mpg video files.

wellthere's an ntsc-dvd option when using yuv4mpegstream to render
video track, it works good!

Thanks for any assistance, and special thanks to the developers and
to all those who have helped me in the past.

you're welcome! sorry answering so fast (i've little time) hope it helps!

Re: [CinCV] can't it really import flv files?

2012-03-27 Thread Valentina Messeri
From a technical point of view, a .flv file is a compressed one, that
means less infos about the file itself, which is the reason why
professional editing tools normally DO NOT support that kind of file,
since quality is obviously compromised.

Then a professional video tool uses an internal decoder/encoder which
could coincide with the system video player, but it's a not a
rule, so you cannot aspect to have any of your video played by your
system as well as edited with cinelerra.
As solucion you can both encode your .flv video to suite cinelerra or
try with a simpler editor, as openshot for example, which is gstreamer
based as totem-gstreamer, so you'll have at the same time a video file
played by your system and edited by your editing tool.

:D

Hi,

I must be missing something.
I've installed cinelerra and I've tried to import a video file by
selecting load files from the File menu.

Isn't that the correct way to import a video file and use it as a video clip?

I tried to import a flv file which is encoded with the h264 codec,
and which I can play without any issue in any video player (e.g.
Gnome MPlayer or VLC or Movie Player), so I definitely have all the
needed codecs installed on the system.

Cinelerra says it can't determine the format, assuming PCM (which
it obviously isn't) and asks me to select audio format parameters
(such as sampling rates, number of bits etc),

It obviously doesn't import the audio correctly and doesn't import
the video at all.

The question is, is there something I'm doing wrong, or doesn't
really Cinelerra support this kind of video file?
I would expect it to be able to import ANY file that my system is
capable of playing. Isn't it?

thanks
m.

I use cinelerra compiled from scratch from community git picking up

Hello,

I've been a long-time Mandriva user, but IMHO, this distribution is
going downhill ever since version 2008.1, although some of my latest
gripes can also be attributed to the overhaul of the sound system and
the new KDE4 desktop environment -- things common to all KDE-based
distributions.

As it is, I've upgraded several machines of myself and my users up to
Mandriva version 2010.2, and with every upgrade more things got messed
up that worked just fine before. Some examples:

- Video playback (DV, MPEG, DVD) that used to be smooth on 2008.1
machines is now always more or less choppy, even with proprietary codecs
and GPU drivers installed.
- The sound system has become a horrible one slider to rule them all
experience, without any of the old, fine-grained mixer features I like.
Also, KDE now often reports that sound devices are missing, or that
Phonon doesn't work -- whilst merrily playing the startup sound at the
same time.
- The Firewire device port that was always automatically and properly
set up upon connecting a camera now requires manual intervention by root
to make certain that /dev/raw1394 has the correct permissions -- every
single time I hook up something.
- Increasingly, applications demand that I install extra, paid-for codec
packs in order to enjoy MP3 files, Internet radio or MPEG video. These
things used to be installed automatically after adding non-free package
sources, but no more.
- And now I found that Ghostscript apparently has a problem: I can't use
my printer for anything but text because any picture results in a
pstoraster failed message. I never had printer problems before.

And even if things weren't always peachy in the past, I always succeeded
in finding solutions by searching the Internet. Not any more -- I spent
many, many hours trying to solve the above problems, but to no avail. As
you may gather, the situation is becoming unworkable, especially in
terms of multimedia activities.

BTW, the main reason to upgrade at all was the emergence of new video
formats and codecs, such as HD and H.264, unsupported in most 2008.1
applications. Also, compiling stuff on this old distribution became
troublesome, because of dependencies involving newer libraries.

Please note also that the hardware is not the problem: all machines have
ample RAM (1GB or more) and HD space, good graphics cards and 2.8+GHz
modern multicore CPU's.

So here's my question: what's the Cinelerra users' favourite
distribution? Or which distribution would probably meet my requirements
best?
Thanks for any suggestions, and yes, I have a modern spare PC that I can
use to try out any amount of distributions.

Best regards,

Richard Rasker

2011-11-22 Thread Valentina Messeri
;) first of all, sorry to come late...and to give my 2 cents with no
reading all thread also (basically no time to do that).

Hi,

hi! here is Valentina, linux videomaker since 2003.
NB questions i put below you're not suppossed to answer meit's a
way to anticipate problems you'll probably face, ok?

I would like to know where I could find information about people editing
feature films meant for theatrical release with Cinelerra.

so, for example: which format for your film? Cinelerra doesn't handle
all. Which is the format you normally use for theatrical release ?

I'm ready for a little sweat when it comes to figure out and put together
the best machine to run it on. What worries me, though is whether the
software will be able to handle the task somehow easily.

it depends on the taski mean a clean editing with the best quality
footage is not difficult at all...

I try to use as much free software as possible not just for economic
reasons but to back the philosophy behind it. I would love to add Cinelerra
to my professional kit.

welli'll try to be short with 3 simple but basically tips:

- you need a perfect workig OS

- you need a perfect working version of cinelerra (avoid packaging:
compile your own version)

- you need to loose time and patience...since, gnu-linux or not, learn
how to use a new tools takes time and patience

Andaccording to my experience 1 on 10 is able to learn a new tool
(overall if that new is a gnu-linx tool) simple because it's not that
easy.

Hope you'll be in that 10%.

all the best!

Hi Ed,

first off, I don't have any clue what's going on here, but just
systematic
considertation gets us some steps ahead

You're using mpeg2enc, which belongs to the 'mjpegtools'. Thus, there
is
no direct connection to Cinelerra, other than that you're feeding the
output of a cinelerra render into the input of mpeg2enc.
Thus, if it worked previously (and you really used identical
parameters, even
the same image size), then it must be a change to mpeg2enc.

Next thing is the error message 'Rate control can't cope with a video
buffer
smaller 4 frame intervals'. Google turns up the following message

http://www.mail-archive.com/mjpeg-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg07414.html[1][1]
Note: I don't know what's going on, but I'm just doing qualified
guessing.
This message as well as the warnings in your output point into some
problems
with Interlaced/Progressive material. Like as if the input stream to
the
encoder is marked as being 'interlaced', while you choose an encoding
parameter for progressive material. Of course, the first question is
what you *want* to do, and what your source material *actually* is
like, i.e. is it interlaced or progressive, and do you want
interlaced
or progressive video as a final result? (Note Cinelerra has almost
no real support for interlaced material, it just passes things
through)

Quoting from the manpage of mpeg2enc:

-I|--interlace-mode 0|1|2

Set  the sequence picture structure and block encoding type for

MPEG-2

streams.  By default, this value is inferred from the interlacing

tag of the

input stream. Setting 0 encodes frame-by-frame with support for

interlaced

video  turned  off,  and specifies that progressive chroma

subsampling has

been used.  Setting 1 encodes frame-by-frame with interlace-adapted

motion

compensation and block encoding, and specifies that interlaced

chroma

subsampling has been used. Setting  2  encodes  interlaced material

field-by-field, which will produce more accurate results for highly

textured

interlaced material with lots of motion, at the expense of

generally less

efficiency.

This setting should match the interlaced-ness of the input stream,

otherwise

chroma artifacts may be  generated  when the MPEG stream is played

back.

Maybe this gives any additional clues?

Normally professional editing software work with raw compression, not
with lossyones like you're trying to use.

Try with lossless compression or re-encode this one to .dv, for example.

Nessun software professionale lavora o lavora bene con compressioni
con perdita, che sono evidentemente, tutti gli archivi che hai provato

Prova con formati sin perdita, o reencode questi archivi a .dv, per esempio

My idea is to make cinelerra more pleasing to the eye and more
functional. As

an example of pleasing to the eye, OpenShot. As an example of more
functional, cutting files button, more effective or better (eg the blurring
of the transitions), improved file management, because the internal ffmpeg
gives very bad results, and could support the external ffmpeg and quicktime
for linux.

Everything I say this without knowledge, is more of an idea.

I know that the graphical environment is internal cinelerra, but that
creates problems, I think it could use qt or gtk.

I have done something to OpenShot (an effect, but really did not do
anything because
they already had mlt). And OpenShot is betting very heavily on the
3D, but does

not reach to the power of cinelerra on other things.

OpenShot, PiTiVi and Kdenlive are based on MLT, which is fine, but I think
that cinelerra is better. (is my opinion).

I imagine an aspect of OpenShot, with the power of cinelerra, more 3D, and
some improvements, and it would incredible.

I thought it not worthwhile to complicate your life, because for simple
things, you are no alternatives, and more complicated things are
supposed to

Lightworks will someday, I'd love to try.

Hi Yosepkey,

some months ago there was a bit of discussion amongst the
remaining active
devs of the Cinelerra-CV version (which is the topic of this
mailinglist).

It wasn't really conclusive, but the general tenor was that is is OK to
diverge maybe a bit more from the upstream Version from HV. There where
several ideas -- mostly it seems that active manpower and thus a more
long-term oriented initiative beyond just fixing this and that
bug is what

is lacking most.

Besides that, you're probably also already aware that the Lumiera project
is an outgrow of an attempt to make a general overhaul and cleanup of the
Cinelerra codebase, initially started as Cinelerra-3 in 2007.

Besides that -- excuse me, I'm asking just out of curiosity -- why do you
especially consider to fork Cinelerra, instead of joining
Openmovieeditor,

KDEnlive or PiTiVi (or put any of the other promising young projects
here)?

I just finished a music video so this is what I had to be sure of.
- Disable drop frames in playback. It goes against what most of us
set, but for synchronizing music to video that option should be off.

- Run the latest RT kernel.
- Shut off pulseaudio (I actually changed the binary filename while
I was editing as well).

If all of these fall under the idea of Duh!!, sorry for restating

packaging [CinCV] [ANNOUNCE] Cinelerra 2.1.5CV

2010-11-25 Thread Valentina Messeri

:d great!

version seems smooth, install and test...

i was wondering is ubuntu packaging is needed...in case i could
arrange to build some [although i prefer NOT to be the package
mantainer :)] and, in that case, i would like (if possible) to put
packaging in the same server of cinelerra.org (to avoid any kind of
problems).

i'm on irc

ciao!
Vale

After more than four years of rather silent work on Cinelerra 2.1CV
we are now

pleased to officially announce the release of Cinelerra 2.1.5CV!

During the last eight months more than twenty patches were contributed and
finally merged. They are available using 'git clone' or 'git pull' from:

  git://git.cinelerra.org/j6t/cinelerra.git

To make these changes obvious to everyone we decided to increase the version
number to 2.1.5CV.

Recent changes (since 2010) are:

- SWOT audio is now supported.

- Build fixes for newer environments (libpng 1.4.3, libjpeg 7, and others).

- PNG with more than 8 bits can be imported, the extra precision is
truncated,

though.

- The YUV4MPEG importer is now much more efficient.

- Correct latency calculation with OSS audio driver.

- And assorted other fixes, many of them taken from Gentoo and Achlinux. See
the short-log for details.

For users, Cinelerra 2.1.5CV stands for the best editing experience so far.
For developers, contributors, and distributors, the release of Cinelerra
2.1.5CV is meant to be a crystal clear signal that the community version of
Cinelerra is still actively developed, even though progress might appear to
be somewhat slow due to the current lack of manpower. (You are invited to
change that!)

In this context we would like to refer to bugs.cinelerra.org: Please help by
supplying comprehensive bug reports, and of course by sending in patches for
the next release, Cinelerra 2.1.6CV.

In case you are missing a patch that has been already sent in, it is
likely to

have slid into obscurity, thus please feel free to remind us!

With best regards,
Your CinelerraCV developers

Hi there,

I've been researching on how to do a complete workflow to edit digital
cinema footage all under linux, using an Elphel camera (open hardware, the
same that's being used by the Apertus project http://cinema.elphel.com/),
so that every step of the process could be open. We would be editing at
higher resolutions than fullHD or even 2k.

It seems it can be done nicely, so this is where I am so far:

I have to say I don't own one of these cameras myself, but the project is
worthy taking a look.

Hi.

I think that I have managed to fix Cinelerra-2.1CV locking problem.
It seems fix for bugzilla bugs 278, 383, 406, 414, 493, 519 - may be
some more, some may be irrelevant.

Fix is huge and tested on couple laptops with 32bit distributions.
Obviously it needs more testing on different hardware/distibutions.

During debugging I found and fixed addittional bugs:
- subtitle decoding in libmpeg3
- added defaults into libmpeg3 for subtitle color
- index generation in libmpeg3
- edit_font_color initialization of S.U.V
- more info in assert info window
- removed BC_Windowevents (now 7 threads less)
- fix of bug 524
- fixed copiler warnings of some plugins
- fixed timebar cursor updating of viewer and compositor
- trace subsystem was rewritten to static buffers, added backtrace
dump on crash
- lots of cleanups

Important change behaviour: composer and viewer always display the frame
starting at the time shown on clock. Frame displayed does not depend on
forward/backward direction. There was inconsistency when direction was
accounted when not (mask).

I intend to continue bug-hunting. Work done so far may be useful
for somebody.

Great work :)

My question is: Is it possible to get my own repo?

Of course, visit us on IRC, send your ssh-pubkey. You can also
(meanwhile) use the Mob repository which is public pushable through
git:// protocoll, just create your own branch there.

Hi.

Use

mpeg3toc mediapath tocfile

to create toc. 'mediapath' must be absolute.

mpeg3toc is part of cinelerra.

Einar

Jim,
Also, I've got a script that creates mpeg table of contents files
from whatever directory your mpeg files are in and plops the TOC
files into .bcast for you:

http://crazedmuleproductions.blogspot.com/2010/01/mpeg-toc-maker.html

Just make sure to edit the script for the correct file extension.

Packagers,

I've pushed out a cinelerra with an updated version of the in-tree
ffmpeg. I'd

like you to test this version before I push it to the official branch. To
clone the repository:

   git clone git://git.cinelerra.org/j6t/cinelerra.git

then checkout the branch ffmpeg:

   git checkout origin/ffmpeg

I am absolutely not a Cinelerra user, only a hacker; therefore, I can only
tell that this version compiles for me, but I cannot tell whether it does
what it is supposed to do (I don't even know how to test it). For this
reason, I need volunteers who can test the update.

BTW, the new version is the one that came with Cinelerra 4 (HV), dated
around May 31, 2008.

[CinCV] Ubuntu Install (was debian issues)

2009-01-05 Thread Valentina Messeri
Emhwhy did you post debian issue when mail is about install in
ubuntu or xubuntu or whatesle.
By the way,you should put which version of ubuntu you're installing as
welland maybe a link to WHERE you found explications to solve your
problems.

That should really help.

thx!
Vale

Heres a post from the Kubuntu forums and here's also how it was solved:

the problem :
just installed cinelerra .deb with GDebi Package Installer from their
website, only where did it install to and how can I open it? it isn't in the
start menu... [image: Huh]

Thanks

How i fixed the user issue:
OK now hold on a lot of information is in this poseted as i tried the deb
package too all it does it add something in the back ground.

*Step 1. *
open terminal and paste this :
wget -q http://akirad.cinelerra.org/pool/addakirad.deb sudo dpkg -i
addakirad.deb rm addakirad.deb sudo apt-get update

it will then ask you for your root pw (likley same as login pw)
[sudo] password for user:

then a lot of stuff will fly by in the terminal screen
*Step 2: *
usern...@pcnamenix:~$ sudo apt-get update

More fly by stuff then
*
Step 3:*
usern...@pcnamenix:~$ sudo apt-get install cinelerra
(then this stuff will appear)
Reading package lists... Done

Building dependency tree

Reading state information... Done

The following extra packages will be installed:

  akiradnews cinelerracv liba52-0.7.4 libavcodec51 libavutil49 libfaad0

  libgsm1 libguicastcv libmjpegtools0c2a libmpeg3cv libquicktime1

  libquicktimecv libswscale0 optlibx11-noxcb-6 optlibx11-noxcb-data

  libfaad0 libgsm1 libguicastcv libmjpegtools0c2a libmpeg3cv libquicktime1

  libquicktimecv libswscale0 optlibx11-noxcb-6 optlibx11-noxcb-data

0 upgraded, 16 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Need to get 18.7MB of archives.

After this operation, 42.9MB of additional disk space will be used.

Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y
(say Y)

then a lot of stuff will be flying by
and then
Setting up cinelerra (1:2.1.0-1svn20081017akirad2) ...
Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
usern...@pcnamenix:~$
*
Step 4 check multimedia menu Sweet its installed !!!*
this got it to work for me the debian package did not install the package
under kubuntu

2008-11-28 Thread Valentina Messeri

2. I removed the unofficial repos for cinelerra from my soures.list and
installed from debian-multimedia. Seems that debian-multimedia has the
same version as I had installed from Valentina's 32bit repo:
2.1.0~svn20080706-0.0

afaik, i build not that far:

http://giss.tv/~vale/debian32/

but at the end of october, so version should be newer that marillat (i
think is for that i build)

really don't understand your problems, anyway.maybe you'd better
run ubuntu binary from heroinewarrior.

cheers!

What version do you have installed Daniel? I just updated my lenny
yesterday, how about you?

Thanks for the help.

B. Bogart

On your lock up problem, check SettingsPreferances Playback and select
Audio Driver = Alsa
Underneath that check the tab Stop playback locks up
Under Video Out uncheck Play Every Frame

I'm using the build from http://debian-multimedia.org and that resolved the
same error you were having it's a bit older (2007) but works fine. I have a
script to install the whole deb multimedia repo if interested.

from where (repositories) are you trying to get cinelerra? Because
that dependencies which are not resolving point to a quite old
packaging (2007.)

I use synaptic myself although I haven't done it with 8.10
We don't call it 8.1 because the .10 refers to October, the tenth
month of the year when the releases are released. The other one is
April. So in April, 2009, we will have the 9.04 release.
I have continued with the 8.04 version of Ubuntu, because it will be
supported longer and I don't need the new bells and whistles of the
8.10 release.

2008-09-26 Thread Valentina Messeri

ok, perfect...

Thx!

Ciao!
Vale

As has been mentioned on the list previously, there are already a
number of actively maintained git repositories:
http://git.cinelerra.org/gitweb/
The j6t repo has the latest work on Cinelerra CV 2.1
The c4 repo has the latest work on the merge of Cinelerra CV 2.1 and
the upstream Cinelerra 4 release.

Since this is where the development is taking place now, the
documentation on the site and the wiki has been updated to reflect
this. But please feel free to add further detail to the wiki or
correct it where it has been not yet been updated.

If you had been updating from subversion and now want to keep up with
the latest developments in the git repo, all you need is two commands:

To clone the full repo:
git clone git://git.cinelerra.org/j6t/cinelerra.git my_cinelerra

To update your copy:
git pull

You could try to start Cinelerra with

It does still seem to behave oddly from time to time, that is: some

I have a separate partition with Gutsy for everything Cinelerra,

Re: [CinCV] Scaling down WMV video?

2008-05-03 Thread Valentina Messeri

This produces a WMV file of the correct screen resolution, but Xine has
problems playing it (it plays the original correctly), claiming that the
frame rate has dropped considerably. The Zen Vision W refuses to even
start playing it. Am I doing something wrong with mencoder?

i don't think you'll be able to play a .wmv produced by linux in your
Zen Vision, try encode to mpg1 or mpeg4, but remember that lavc uses a
default vbitrate=200.

2008-04-29 Thread Valentina Messeri

I was able to find a solution to convert WMV to MPG at this site:

well you didn'tit seems, anyway, you said you used:

mencoder -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1000:vhq -oac
mp3lame -lameopts br=98 -o videofile.mpg videofile.wmv

you can try to change videofile.mpg for videofile.avi...about quality,
maybe change bitrate for an higher value, but dunno, really it depends
on quality of your original wmv...

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/wmv-to-mpg-is-this-possible-easily-and-a-sound-problem-551589/
(The first Google hit for Cinelerra WMV.)
It clogged up my 2.2 GHz dual core processor for almost ten minutes, and
produced an MPG file of about the same size (44 megabytes) as the
original WMV file. When I view this in Xine, the audio quality is the
same, but the video quality has dropped considerably. When I try to load
the MPG file in Cinelerra, Cinelerra crashes. Is this because it runs
out of resources?

Re: [CinCV] More logos for Lumiera

2008-03-17 Thread Valentina Messeri

sorry to be so short.about logo 1...not much to sayi like it

Vale

yes, I like that too, the best one so far, great work.

Thanks.

Some suggestions (dunno how it looks, just ideas):
 * make the 'l' in the logo little bit smaller (or the box biggier) so
that the red color flows around it.
 * experiment with different sizes of the dot in the logo (biggier)

I'll do that. I even considered removing the dot and just leave the l. I'll
work on such variations.

 * correct the kerning between the m and the i, move them little closer
   together.
 * is the font designed by you?

No :'( It's called Shifty Chica. But we could try to do small
changes to it,

in order to work better.

(well this are already suggestions about fine tuning if we
decide on this logo, we are not that far yet, aren't we?)

I hope we are :) I would like to see more proposals. I would even
like to have

more ideas :D

Anyway, number 1 is also my favorite of this set.

 * in a huge (poster version) the logo 'l' might contain transport/
perforation marks, like a film. maybe not just interested how that
   would look like.

I thought of that, but gave up on the idea before trying because I thought it
would be too obvious. But I'll give it a try and post the results.

Thanks for the tips,
Leandro

No. cinelerra should be recompiled with debug information so that
more detailed information like line numbers and variable values
are available

kk, I was hoping it wouldn't come to that. I'll try for next week, cause I'll
have to actually build from source for the first time on this ubuntu install.
And then it'll probably just work... But thanks for being patient.

[CinCVS] 2.6.22Debianfirewire(was HDV workflow questions)

2007-11-13 Thread Valentina Messeri
hi flavio...that's a bit off-topic, although not exactly.actual
debian kernel 2.6.22 doesn't suport raw1394 as firewire device, so
kino/dvgrab doesn't work

better wait to update any debian system...

;)

Hi there,

So it is that I finally started editing on HDV. During this process though
I'd like to ask a few questions so that I can write on estudiolivre.org or
so a nice workflow in portuguese - something in portuguese that worked fine
for people here. However, I myself am having some doubts in the process,
some of which I describe below. Any help would be a lot appreciated.

1. Capturing

As far as I've researched on the web there are few ways of capturing HDV
material into a computer. The three process I found were via dvgrab3.0 (that
would require a debian unstable system package), test-mpeg2 and mpg1394grab.

I haven't installed dvgrab3.0 because I like to work on stable systems and I
thought it would be nice if there was a way that wouldn't require an update
on the whole machine. So I first tried test-mpeg2. The ./configure and make
steps went fine, but I couldn't actually make it work. I can send the exact
error then, but firstly I'd like to know if someone knows of a manual or
something like that on the web. Mainly, I did a test-mpeg2 archive.ts
and it said it started receiving or something, and it did create the .ts
file but wouldn't write anything on it. I plan to do future tests yet.

mpg1394 worked nicely, no real efforts in capturing whatsoever, I'm happy
with it even though it does not split files or control the camera, as dvgrab
most likely would...

So the main question here would be about the funcionality of test-mpeg2
really.

2. exporting to camera

This one relates to the previous question. As far as I've seen, it seems
that only test-mpeg2 would export the HDV material back to the camera. And I
would like to know if my computer would handle that (p4 ht 3.2), so I'd like
to test it. But I couldn't make it work =( And I also haven't found any
nice tutorial on this particular step, so I'm a bit lost in this one. I
guess so far it would be my main aim at this moment. Any hints? Even on
other programs that would do the job?

3. editing

I am following the steps in the cin manual. I have seen that my computer
(cinelerra with no OpenGL) is not able to handle HDV footage by itself -
that meaning: capturing, creating the .TOC files and opening them on
cinelerra (1440x1080i) to edit. But I have also seen that for some people
having OpenGL has not made an amazing difference. So far it doesn't matter,
because I plan to do the proxy editing, creating the Mjpeg + Wav = DV or MOV
files and use the script to reconvert them back to HDV at rendering. My
only question here would be: is it very worthy for me to change my cin to an
OpenGL-able version? With DV it has been working tremendously fine under
XV-X11...

thanks for the help,
flavio

Re: [CinCVS] CINELERRA STILL IN THE 90s

2007-11-11 Thread Valentina Messeri
read your very long and really boring mail is really a waste of
timei would like to answer you more deeply...but really have NO
TIME TO WASTE .

Why don't you DO somethinh else then talk, talk, talk..

Vale

as many of you know I am a Adobe Production Premium users, and I
work mainly selling matrox systems (win and Apple based). And my
resseller told me that matrox is going to release some libraries to
make a hardware based solution for linux possible. but as I have
said many times, I LOVE CINELERRA, BUT WHEN cinelerra become
SOMEDAY, more USABLE? when will those EFFECTS floating panels will
go or become an EFFECT AREA, come on people that´s why Adobe
premiere is better than EDIUS... cinelerra will ever learn ONE
lesson of the comercial tools world? why try to make it so.

why the comunity is so closed in the linux world, you can take MANY
shortcuts but still want to reinvent the weel once and over and over
again. There are MANY video apps wich start well, have great GUI but
then becomes obsoletes, cinelerra has A GREAT CORE, and is VERY
POWERFULL, but why has that RIDICULUOS 80s UNIX LOOK? come on.

cinelerra for a long time has the ADVANCED FEATURE of hd editing, but
now, many apps can do it, so why users will install linux and
cinelerra? the EASY TO USE INTERFACE? is OLD, and not very powerfull.

there is a new feature in afterFX called BRAINSTORM, when you select an
affect, and then the soft SUGGESTS several images (parameters
combinations of that FX) wich represents that effect in different
random values... is SOOO COMPLEX TO ACHIEVE THAT in cinelerra? is
almost STUPID, but that thing is THE GREAT FEATURE OF THE YEAR.

the precompositing, i mean metaclips if i want to add an effect to
20 layers in Premiere, i just make a sequenceA, put the 20 layers
there, then make a secuenceB, and the SEQUENCEA is a clip wich can take
effects, seems simple, but still missing, that could be GREAT IN 2005
for cinelerra.

why keep that sound editor way of working? don´t you SEE where the
professional softwares are going? why make things WRONG? have you
checked PREMIERE, FINALCUT, or even that EDIUS? watch
videotutorials, you will be surprised of how many of those effects
and features are already present in other GNU projects, why not
making an INTEGRATION? if matrox could have a driver TOMORROW,
cinelerra will be the most prepared NLE, but why people abandon
their customizable/powerfull/easy-to-use adobe suite?

Many feature requests i have made are easy to implement, but requires
an open minded comunity, wich priorize the user, and the user needs.
THIS SHOULD BE AND NLE FOR EDITORS not for programers, an I rigth?
http://www.openmovieeditor.org/board/viewforum.php?id=2

Many ideas in the Adobe/finalcut world are EASY to implement in
cinelerra for example: you have an audio track and then RIGTH-click
and when the menu opens go to EDIT-AUDIO-IN-AUDACITY, and the system
creates instantly a WAV replacing that audio in the timeline
(transparent to user), and call a command: audacity tack0001.wav
when you apply an effect or something, just close-and-save and the
timeline is upgrated... that is the same stupid Premiere-Audition
cross. the editor can have the audacity power in the timeline with just
2 clicks.

DVD directly from the timeline, with templates... come on that´s A
MUST BE, you go to an option DVD-TEMPLATE-EXPORT, and you select
templates (adobe uses PSD files where layers are the objects,
cinelerra could use gimp XCF), and the soft create the miniatures,
and renders the MPEGS to fit in the DVD, and then burn it. The user
just call the option and the system does the rest, it´s clean, why
isn´t an option like that?

PS: I will keep telling you more GREAT features for cinelerra, but
pease, be more opened to the user needs, now cinelerra IS NOT READY FOR
PROFESSIONAL EDITING, just cut, and paste editings with precision
issues.

Hi, just upgraded to the gusty packages (32-bit) - I'm getting a
core dump (no

other messages from the shell) when I try to start it. Any advice on
tracking down the problem?

Re: [CinCVS] MATROX HARDWARE for linux users

2007-11-04 Thread Valentina Messeri

ola!

that's great what you say..let's see

about release..which distro still use JANUARY cinelerra ?

;)

Vale

hi people, as most of you know, I love cinelerra, but i have said many
times that cin, has lost the leed in serious editing apps. Anyway, Cin
i the best we have out there, and I HATE the way the environment works
(as an ADOBE user, of course), i hope developers realize soon that this
is a video tool an not an audio app called broadcast2000.

I still think that users MUST help developers in any way we can, so i
also colaboraqte in the open movie editor project, but recently at work
(we are MATROX Resellers) our providers sen us the news that MATROX is
planning opening the SDK so linux users can have compatible drivers for
matrox hardware and use the REALTIME HARDWARE BASED effects, natively.
http://matrox.com/video/products/developer/dsx.cfm}

this is a rumor, but we expect to see an anouncement soon, if i know
something more I will let you know, Cinelerra, OpenmovieEditor, and
Kino are (as i see) the 3 most advanced apps in linux professionally
speacking.

At work I sell matrox, but we see all the time that matrox is HATING
VISTA, and now has great tools for Apple and linux seems a reasonably
option, so the Open comunities have to be organized to take the
chanllenge.

Marquitux.
PS: Developers, PEASE, make a release soon, the regular user can´t
compile or patch, we are using the same JANUARY cinelerra.

2007-11-03 Thread Valentina Messeri

:D,

packaging is (as usual) here:

deb http://giss.tv/~vale/ubuntu32 ./
deb http://giss.tv/~vale/ubuntu64 ./

actually there's compatibility between versions ubuntu/cinelerra, so
packaging should work feisty/gutsy as well.

Hello Leandro

Everything I said below is from experience, sometimes limited, so make
sure to get a second advice

For quality in mpeg2enc for the mjpegtools (use with y4mstream)
This is what I am using (mind the caps)

mpeg2enc -f 8 -g 6 -G 9 -R 0 -D 10 -E -10 -q 3 -K keep-hf -o %
Now depending on your source : you may want to precise
 -a p/n (pal/ntsc)
-I integer (intreleaved or progressive)
- M 2 (threads)

Having said that you will need to export you audio separately then use
mplex to get you mpeg file

such as
mplex -f 8 -S 4400 -v -o video.mpeg video.mpv audio.mp2
Then dvdauthor and mkisofs it

ffmpeg is not (as far as I know) able to produce a mpeg file you can use
with dvdauthor
Unless of course you use something else

other wise ffmpeg -i source -target pal-dvd -sameq output.mpeg

Now mpeg2enc from cinelerra has the possibility to encode with 422 color
sampling (if you are using another source than a consumer camcorder).

Hope this helps
Cheers

 Hi there!

How do I render my project to a DVD with the best possible quality? It's
a short film, so I have the space, but when I use the defaults in

used to get mpegs to DVDs always the same or can I change something?

And btw: is there any difference between using mpeg2enc or ffmpeg to do
 the render?

Hi all
I have an issue here.

I try to encode in h264 a PAL sequence of few seconds. The encoding

Distr is ubuntu on a AMD dual core turion.
Install went smoothly from SVN.
I have seen several reports on it, not sure if it is fixed.

Hi all
I have an issue here.

I try to encode in h264 a PAL sequence of few seconds. The encoding
seems to lock, nothing is happening, or nothing seems to happen.
Distr is ubuntu on a AMD dual core turion.
Install went smoothly from SVN.
I have seen several reports on it, not sure if it is fixed.

However trying ffmpeg directly

I did not have nasm installed at all so first I tried nasm 0.99.0-1

Then I compiled nasm 0.99.2 from latest source, still the same make error.
Then I tried nasm 0.98.38-1.2 from etch, still same error.
Maybe I'll wait for Vale's new sid package :)
Thanx for the tips..

Did you 'sudo make uninstall' the nasm you built from source?
Otherwise there is a chance that it is still using this nasm you built
from source even though you installed the etch package.

According to Adobe Labs Wiki and DesktopLinux.com:

The 8/21 beta release of Flash Player 9 Update 3, codename “Moviestar”,
on Adobe Labs contains new improvements for media, including support for
H.264 video and HE-AAC audio and hardware accelerated, multi-core full
screen video playback. This release also includes performance
enhancements and a new Flash Player cache for common platform
components, such as the Flex framework, to reduce application sizes and
start-up times. See the Adobe Labs page for more information about this
beta.

According to the Adobe Labs wiki, the software will now support
high-definition 480p, 720p, and 1080p content, encoded with either On2
or H.264. The company says H.264 will give users higher-quality, at
lower bit rates.

Flash Player 9, Update 3 beta, available for download from Adobe's
Labs website, supports Linux, OS X, and Windows. Linux versions are
available for download in gzipped tar and rpm formats.

Re: [CinCVS] libcinelerra3

2007-08-25 Thread Valentina Messeri

hi,

:D

i really don't want start a flame, hehehhe, only make some
observations about the way you start you large mail.

I've been lurking here for a while, but this thread has been too much
to resist.
I would very much like to find an open source solution for video editing that
could be used locally for educational purposes, but right now I can't
recommend Cinelerra as I have never been able to get it working well enough
on my own machines.

YOU..you're simply talking about your experience, do'you really
think, talking about educational purposes that propietary tools
worth the while?
I could understand profesional purpose, cause people got so used to
their propietary tools and they, obviously, think work has to be done,
first of all..

In it's present state I'm afraid that it would be
an exercise in frustration that would totally defeat the purpose.
For now Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express seats make a lot more
sense. They work flawlessly, even on 5 year old g4 (~500 MHz) machines.
The cost for both hardware and software in prohibitive though.

is it really necessary to say things everybody knows?
You came into linux editing because you were told it was easier and simpler?

I will have to admit that I have not looked at some of the work that
has been announced recently. It makes me think that I must be
doing something wrong, but I've been playing with the source
for a while now. It compiles, it runs, but it is slow, crashes
in almost every session and the render formats are somewhat
limited.

u, and so what? I really think first part of this mail is useless,
although i can understand frustration lead to that.i find more
contructive next part of your mail.

Some observations on the discussions so far:

End Market

Is this thing a professional video editor or is it something
for home use. There is a very big difference in scope
between the two, both for the programmer and for the
end user. What are you trying to achieve.

Scripts and Libraries

I would worry about the architecture of the thing first. Right
now the code extremely tangled with many opportunities for
non-deterministic behavior. I assume that's why everyone is arguing
about a re-write. My own opinion is that a re-design is
needed first. Decouple all the bits and you can write a functional
editing core while everyone else is still arguing about
scripts and GUI's.

Given the need for highly optimized/parallel code, I would
classify the core as a non-trivial task. As an example (someone could
verify this), I went into the existing
decoder for mpeg2 and commented out the DCT routines to see if the mmx
routines made any difference, I got about a 5% reduction
in frame rate - with no transform mmx or otherwise. Further
experiments made the same way lead me to believe
that most of the playback overhead is outside of
the actual decoding. Tracing the flow through the decoder
was itself a non-trivial task.

De-Interlacing

Fine if it's the only alternative, but the interpolation yields a soft image.

Interlace, 24P et al.

The choice of a particular format is really a creative decision.
The common wisdom says interlace for video and sports,
progressive (esp. 24P) for storytelling. Ultimately the medium is
a tool through which a individual vision is realized.
There is no right answer. A creative person
can work well in any medium, no matter how
limited, but it can be a pain (that also applies
to programming). Right now we are locally doing 60i, 720, 24 and 30P. and
1080i. After spending some time with real progressive
formats (not post or in-camera processed) I personally
would like to see interlacing die a horrible death, but
as I noted above, that is only one person's opinion.
I do agree that interlaced formats are likely to
win in the consumer space. 1080 is a bigger
number.

Format and feature specifications should follow
the identification of the end market. Who's
gonna use this ??? What camera's are they
likely to use. What are they shooting.
What are they going to do to the footage.
What's the distribution format, etc etc.

That's probably too much already, but I would love to
see a successful project here. There really is no
other alternative on Linux. I do appreciate the
efforts of the community here to try and fix
up the existing codebase, but it really appears
to be too hard. The upstream compatibility
requirement is too restrictive, and even
without that you are fighting the design.

Regards,
Brad Hare

Re: [CinCVS] Missing plugins on Feisty 64bits cinelerra binaries (giss.tv)

2007-08-24 Thread Valentina Messeri

hi,

i'm debian user, snip! so i did make ubuntu packaging but really never
use them.i'll have a look at machine i used to compile ubuntu :D

thx for report!!!

Vale

Before I start I would introduce myself: I am new to Cinelerra and
relatively new to linux (a newbie), so do not slaughter me if I am wrong
(by the way, I am not a native English speaker).

The problem is that the binaries for Feisty 64bits (deb
http://giss.tv/~vale/ubuntu64 ./) are working perfectly, appart from
that SEVERAL plugins are missing (such as Brightness/Contrast, Gamma and
others). Obviously this situation leaves cinelerra unusable (mainly in
terms of color management). I wonder if this is the right place for
posting this, I hope so, since the repository appears in cinelerra's
offcial manual / wiki.

Another problem that I found is that I could not get in touch with the
specific person who build these .debs (Valentina?). Perhaps someone in
this mailing list have Valentina's contact, so then this information
could be passed in to her.

The problem is perfectly reproducible with 64bits cinelerra debs and
feisty 64bits.

I hope this information is of some help.

well, we do have a web.often is aoudated, cause it's not

publishers.this way we could really be a community and show

is anyone available to do that? i mean, hosting and installing?

Hi all,

Raffaella I agree with you : it's important to see what can be done with
Cinelerra, and a place where people can go and have a look on
productions is a naecessary thing. (btw I can't see some cool italian
productions in this list).
BUT:
What do you think about making a weblog (a blog I mean) for Cinelerra
with a link on the cvs.cinelerra.org site web? I ask this question to
all developpers. This weblog could be a cool place to publish all new
events concerning Cinelerra (Community or hv version); that is new
users' productions, new features, projects, alternatives, howtos?, etc,
etc. Such a tool could permit discussions into the community, sharing
and could allow the keep in archives links of past events. I think a
weblog is worth a try. Don't you?
