Re: [CinCV] cinelerra problem with stability
Ciao Raffaele! allora: the loss compression of the ogg files you're trying to use it's the point; so, If you don't have any other footage to use you'd better encode ogg to, for example dv. How? Well, as you said you're not very expert try this recipe: install kino, mplayer, mencoder then open your ogg files with kino (to do that kino itself transcode that ogg file to dv). This way you'll have an heavier file with same quality but without compatibility problems. A question...dis you use ogg, or any other loss compression files, when editing with windows or mac? have a nice day! Vale I installed cinelerra on my pc I have ubuntu 11.10 I followed these instructions: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cinelerra-ppa/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install cinelerra that is all I did. When I try to use it it turns off by itself and give me messages such as the screenshot I attached I do not know what to do. I am not very expert of Linux, I just abandoned window and mac to start a new life. Re: [CinCV] Rendering with Cinellera
Should I be looking at rendering the Video and Audio streams separately? yes, good choice If so, what settings should I use (perhaps .mpg video and .mpg audio?). better use yuv4mpegstream for video and maybe ac3 for audio, for compability issues, although mpeg audio can be used as well... If I do that, how do I combine the streams into a standard NSTC style .mpg file containing audio and video compatible with the .mpg used to create DVDs and in perfect synchronization? with mplex or ffmpeg When I use ffmpeg to import video from a DVD, I usually use the option -b 8500 to get good quality video (which results in q=2, which is the best if I understand correctly). dunno if i understood properly but if you're using footage from dvd you can directly import it from cinelerra timeline (mpegtoc) and avoid an intermediate transcode (in order no to loose quality) I want to lose as little quality as is practical when I render the video -- I want the output quality to be no worse than that of the original input .mpg video files. wellthere's an ntsc-dvd option when using yuv4mpegstream to render video track, it works good! Thanks for any assistance, and special thanks to the developers and to all those who have helped me in the past. you're welcome! sorry answering so fast (i've little time) hope it helps! Re: [CinCV] can't it really import flv files?
From a technical point of view, a .flv file is a compressed one, that means less infos about the file itself, which is the reason why professional editing tools normally DO NOT support that kind of file, since quality is obviously compromised. Then a professional video tool uses an internal decoder/encoder which could coincide with the system video player, but it's a not a rule, so you cannot aspect to have any of your video played by your system as well as edited with cinelerra. As solucion you can both encode your .flv video to suite cinelerra or try with a simpler editor, as openshot for example, which is gstreamer based as totem-gstreamer, so you'll have at the same time a video file played by your system and edited by your editing tool. :D Vale Hi, I must be missing something. I've installed cinelerra and I've tried to import a video file by selecting load files from the File menu. Isn't that the correct way to import a video file and use it as a video clip? I tried to import a flv file which is encoded with the h264 codec, and which I can play without any issue in any video player (e.g. Gnome MPlayer or VLC or Movie Player), so I definitely have all the needed codecs installed on the system. Cinelerra says it can't determine the format, assuming PCM (which it obviously isn't) and asks me to select audio format parameters (such as sampling rates, number of bits etc), It obviously doesn't import the audio correctly and doesn't import the video at all. The question is, is there something I'm doing wrong, or doesn't really Cinelerra support this kind of video file? I would expect it to be able to import ANY file that my system is capable of playing. Isn't it? thanks m. ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra

Re: [CinCV] Popular Linux distribution among Cinelerra users?
i use debian/ubuntu dists on coreduo or quad 32 bit (currently mostly ubuntu 10/11) on pc and mac, but fedora worked fine as well (simply since i started with debian it's easy for me). I use cinelerra compiled from scratch from community git picking up from Monty version or other contributions ( often i use several machines to speed HD job) and different version of cinelerra. imho it's important not using 3d desktop (whatever you decide to use) or similar: i mean that stuff really slow video job or playback. thks to all developers and community since cinelerra is quite stable, at the time really thx! Vale Hello, I've been a long-time Mandriva user, but IMHO, this distribution is going downhill ever since version 2008.1, although some of my latest gripes can also be attributed to the overhaul of the sound system and the new KDE4 desktop environment -- things common to all KDE-based distributions. As it is, I've upgraded several machines of myself and my users up to Mandriva version 2010.2, and with every upgrade more things got messed up that worked just fine before. Some examples: - Video playback (DV, MPEG, DVD) that used to be smooth on 2008.1 machines is now always more or less choppy, even with proprietary codecs and GPU drivers installed. - The sound system has become a horrible one slider to rule them all experience, without any of the old, fine-grained mixer features I like. Also, KDE now often reports that sound devices are missing, or that Phonon doesn't work -- whilst merrily playing the startup sound at the same time. - The Firewire device port that was always automatically and properly set up upon connecting a camera now requires manual intervention by root to make certain that /dev/raw1394 has the correct permissions -- every single time I hook up something. - Increasingly, applications demand that I install extra, paid-for codec packs in order to enjoy MP3 files, Internet radio or MPEG video. These things used to be installed automatically after adding non-free package sources, but no more. - And now I found that Ghostscript apparently has a problem: I can't use my printer for anything but text because any picture results in a pstoraster failed message. I never had printer problems before. And even if things weren't always peachy in the past, I always succeeded in finding solutions by searching the Internet. Not any more -- I spent many, many hours trying to solve the above problems, but to no avail. As you may gather, the situation is becoming unworkable, especially in terms of multimedia activities. BTW, the main reason to upgrade at all was the emergence of new video formats and codecs, such as HD and H.264, unsupported in most 2008.1 applications. Also, compiling stuff on this old distribution became troublesome, because of dependencies involving newer libraries. Please note also that the hardware is not the problem: all machines have ample RAM (1GB or more) and HD space, good graphics cards and 2.8+GHz modern multicore CPU's. So here's my question: what's the Cinelerra users' favourite distribution? Or which distribution would probably meet my requirements best? Thanks for any suggestions, and yes, I have a modern spare PC that I can use to try out any amount of distributions. Re: [CinCV] Feature Films in Cinelerra
;) first of all, sorry to come late...and to give my 2 cents with no reading all thread also (basically no time to do that). Hi, hi! here is Valentina, linux videomaker since 2003. NB questions i put below you're not suppossed to answer meit's a way to anticipate problems you'll probably face, ok? I would like to know where I could find information about people editing feature films meant for theatrical release with Cinelerra. so, for example: which format for your film? Cinelerra doesn't handle all. Which is the format you normally use for theatrical release ? I'm ready for a little sweat when it comes to figure out and put together the best machine to run it on. What worries me, though is whether the software will be able to handle the task somehow easily. it depends on the taski mean a clean editing with the best quality footage is not difficult at all... I try to use as much free software as possible not just for economic reasons but to back the philosophy behind it. I would love to add Cinelerra to my professional kit. welli'll try to be short with 3 simple but basically tips: - you need a perfect workig OS - you need a perfect working version of cinelerra (avoid packaging: compile your own version) - you need to loose time and patience...since, gnu-linux or not, learn how to use a new tools takes time and patience Andaccording to my experience 1 on 10 is able to learn a new tool (overall if that new is a gnu-linx tool) simple because it's not that easy. Vale My idea is to make cinelerra more pleasing to the eye and more functional. As an example of pleasing to the eye, OpenShot. As an example of more functional, cutting files button, more effective or better (eg the blurring of the transitions), improved file management, because the internal ffmpeg gives very bad results, and could support the external ffmpeg and quicktime for linux. Everything I say this without knowledge, is more of an idea. I know that the graphical environment is internal cinelerra, but that creates problems, I think it could use qt or gtk. I have done something to OpenShot (an effect, but really did not do anything because they already had mlt). And OpenShot is betting very heavily on the 3D, but does not reach to the power of cinelerra on other things. OpenShot, PiTiVi and Kdenlive are based on MLT, which is fine, but I think that cinelerra is better. (is my opinion). I imagine an aspect of OpenShot, with the power of cinelerra, more 3D, and some improvements, and it would incredible. Vale After more than four years of rather silent work on Cinelerra 2.1CV we are now pleased to officially announce the release of Cinelerra 2.1.5CV! During the last eight months more than twenty patches were contributed and finally merged. They are available using 'git clone' or 'git pull' from: git://git.cinelerra.org/j6t/cinelerra.git To make these changes obvious to everyone we decided to increase the version number to 2.1.5CV. Recent changes (since 2010) are: - SWOT audio is now supported. - Build fixes for newer environments (libpng 1.4.3, libjpeg 7, and others). - PNG with more than 8 bits can be imported, the extra precision is truncated, though. - The YUV4MPEG importer is now much more efficient. - Correct latency calculation with OSS audio driver. - And assorted other fixes, many of them taken from Gentoo and Achlinux. See the short-log for details. For users, Cinelerra 2.1.5CV stands for the best editing experience so far. For developers, contributors, and distributors, the release of Cinelerra 2.1.5CV is meant to be a crystal clear signal that the community version of Cinelerra is still actively developed, even though progress might appear to be somewhat slow due to the current lack of manpower. (You are invited to change that!) In this context we would like to refer to bugs.cinelerra.org: Please help by supplying comprehensive bug reports, and of course by sending in patches for the next release, Cinelerra 2.1.6CV. In case you are missing a patch that has been already sent in, it is likely to have slid into obscurity, thus please feel free to remind us! With best regards, Your CinelerraCV developers Recent changes by contributor: Einar Rünkaru (8): Updated .gitignore files with names of generated files Fix mmap errorcode Fixed compilation on Fedora 13 Fix compilation error in edits.C. sorry to be so short.about logo 1...not much to sayi like it Vale yes, I like that too, the best one so far, great work. Thanks. Some suggestions (dunno how it looks, just ideas): * make the 'l' in the logo little bit smaller (or the box biggier) so that the red color flows around it. * experiment with different sizes of the dot in the logo (biggier) I'll do that. I even considered removing the dot and just leave the l. I'll work on such variations. * correct the kerning between the m and the i, move them little closer together. * is the font designed by you? No :'( It's called Shifty Chica. But we could try to do small changes to it, in order to work better. (well this are already suggestions about fine tuning if we decide on this logo, we are not that far yet, aren't we?) I hope we are :) I would like to see more proposals. I would even like to have more ideas :D Anyway, number 1 is also my favorite of this set. * in a huge (poster version) the logo 'l' might contain transport/ perforation marks, like a film. maybe not just interested how that would look like. I haven't installed dvgrab3.0 because I like to work on stable systems and I thought it would be nice if there was a way that wouldn't require an update on the whole machine. So I first tried test-mpeg2. The ./configure and make steps went fine, but I couldn't actually make it work. I can send the exact error then, but firstly I'd like to know if someone knows of a manual or something like that on the web. Mainly, I did a test-mpeg2 archive.ts and it said it started receiving or something, and it did create the .ts file but wouldn't write anything on it. I plan to do future tests yet. mpg1394 worked nicely, no real efforts in capturing whatsoever, I'm happy with it even though it does not split files or control the camera, as dvgrab most likely would... So the main question here would be about the funcionality of test-mpeg2 really. 2. exporting to camera This one relates to the previous question. As far as I've seen, it seems that only test-mpeg2 would export the HDV material back to the camera. And I would like to know if my computer would handle that (p4 ht 3.2), so I'd like to test it. But I couldn't make it work =( And I also haven't found any nice tutorial on this particular step, so I'm a bit lost in this one. I guess so far it would be my main aim at this moment. Any hints? Even on other programs that would do the job? 3. editing I am following the steps in the cin manual. I have seen that my computer (cinelerra with no OpenGL) is not able to handle HDV footage by itself - that meaning: capturing, creating the .TOC files and opening them on cinelerra (1440x1080i) to edit. But I have also seen that for some people having OpenGL has not made an amazing difference. So far it doesn't matter, because I plan to do the proxy editing, creating the Mjpeg + Wav = DV or MOV files and use the script to reconvert them back to HDV at rendering. My only question here would be: is it very worthy for me to change my cin to an OpenGL-able version? With DV it has been working tremendously fine under XV-X11... thanks for the help, flavio http://encosianima.net/ This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra

Re: [CinCVS] CINELERRA STILL IN THE 90s
read your very long and really boring mail is really a waste of timei would like to answer you more deeply...but really have NO TIME TO WASTE . Why don't you DO somethinh else then talk, talk, talk.. Vale as many of you know I am a Adobe Production Premium users, and I work mainly selling matrox systems (win and Apple based). And my resseller told me that matrox is going to release some libraries to make a hardware based solution for linux possible. but as I have said many times, I LOVE CINELERRA, BUT WHEN cinelerra become SOMEDAY, more USABLE? when will those EFFECTS floating panels will go or become an EFFECT AREA, come on people that´s why Adobe premiere is better than EDIUS... cinelerra will ever learn ONE lesson of the comercial tools world? why try to make it so. why the comunity is so closed in the linux world, you can take MANY shortcuts but still want to reinvent the weel once and over and over again. There are MANY video apps wich start well, have great GUI but then becomes obsoletes, cinelerra has A GREAT CORE, and is VERY POWERFULL, but why has that RIDICULUOS 80s UNIX LOOK? come on. cinelerra for a long time has the ADVANCED FEATURE of hd editing, but now, many apps can do it, so why users will install linux and cinelerra? the EASY TO USE INTERFACE? is OLD, and not very powerfull. there is a new feature in afterFX called BRAINSTORM, when you select an affect, and then the soft SUGGESTS several images (parameters combinations of that FX) wich represents that effect in different random values... is SOOO COMPLEX TO ACHIEVE THAT in cinelerra? is almost STUPID, but that thing is THE GREAT FEATURE OF THE YEAR. the precompositing, i mean metaclips if i want to add an effect to 20 layers in Premiere, i just make a sequenceA, put the 20 layers there, then make a secuenceB, and the SEQUENCEA is a clip wich can take effects, seems simple, but still missing, that could be GREAT IN 2005 for cinelerra. why keep that sound editor way of working? don´t you SEE where the professional softwares are going? why make things WRONG? have you checked PREMIERE, FINALCUT, or even that EDIUS? watch videotutorials, you will be surprised of how many of those effects and features are already present in other GNU projects, why not making an INTEGRATION? if matrox could have a driver TOMORROW, cinelerra will be the most prepared NLE, but why people abandon their customizable/powerfull/easy-to-use adobe suite? Many feature requests i have made are easy to implement, but requires an open minded comunity, wich priorize the user, and the user needs. THIS SHOULD BE AND NLE FOR EDITORS not for programers, an I rigth? http://www.openmovieeditor.org/board/viewforum.php?id=2 Many ideas in the Adobe/finalcut world are EASY to implement in cinelerra for example: you have an audio track and then RIGTH-click and when the menu opens go to EDIT-AUDIO-IN-AUDACITY, and the system creates instantly a WAV replacing that audio in the timeline (transparent to user), and call a command: audacity tack0001.wav when you apply an effect or something, just close-and-save and the timeline is upgrated... that is the same stupid Premiere-Audition cross. the editor can have the audacity power in the timeline with just 2 clicks. DVD directly from the timeline, with templates... come on that´s A MUST BE, you go to an option DVD-TEMPLATE-EXPORT, and you select templates (adobe uses PSD files where layers are the objects, cinelerra could use gimp XCF), and the soft create the miniatures, and renders the MPEGS to fit in the DVD, and then burn it. The user just call the option and the system does the rest, it´s clean, why isn´t an option like that? marquitux PS: I will keep telling you more GREAT features for cinelerra, but pease, be more opened to the user needs, now cinelerra IS NOT READY FOR PROFESSIONAL EDITING, just cut, and paste editings with precision issues. This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra

Re: [CinCVS] MATROX HARDWARE for linux users
ola! that's great what you say..let's see about release..which distro still use JANUARY cinelerra ? ;) Vale hi people, as most of you know, I love cinelerra, but i have said many times that cin, has lost the leed in serious editing apps. Anyway, Cin i the best we have out there, and I HATE the way the environment works (as an ADOBE user, of course), i hope developers realize soon that this is a video tool an not an audio app called broadcast2000. I still think that users MUST help developers in any way we can, so i also colaboraqte in the open movie editor project, but recently at work (we are MATROX Resellers) our providers sen us the news that MATROX is planning opening the SDK so linux users can have compatible drivers for matrox hardware and use the REALTIME HARDWARE BASED effects, natively. http://matrox.com/video/products/developer/dsx.cfm} this is a rumor, but we expect to see an anouncement soon, if i know something more I will let you know, Cinelerra, OpenmovieEditor, and Kino are (as i see) the 3 most advanced apps in linux professionally speacking. At work I sell matrox, but we see all the time that matrox is HATING VISTA, and now has great tools for Apple and linux seems a reasonably option, so the Open comunities have to be organized to take the chanllenge. Re: [CinCVS] libcinelerra3
hi, :D i really don't want start a flame, hehehhe, only make some observations about the way you start you large mail. I've been lurking here for a while, but this thread has been too much to resist. I would very much like to find an open source solution for video editing that could be used locally for educational purposes, but right now I can't recommend Cinelerra as I have never been able to get it working well enough on my own machines. YOU..you're simply talking about your experience, do'you really think, talking about educational purposes that propietary tools worth the while? I could understand profesional purpose, cause people got so used to their propietary tools and they, obviously, think work has to be done, first of all.. In it's present state I'm afraid that it would be an exercise in frustration that would totally defeat the purpose. For now Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express seats make a lot more sense. They work flawlessly, even on 5 year old g4 (~500 MHz) machines. The cost for both hardware and software in prohibitive though. is it really necessary to say things everybody knows? You came into linux editing because you were told it was easier and simpler? I will have to admit that I have not looked at some of the work that has been announced recently. It makes me think that I must be doing something wrong, but I've been playing with the source for a while now. It compiles, it runs, but it is slow, crashes in almost every session and the render formats are somewhat limited. u, and so what? I really think first part of this mail is useless, although i can understand frustration lead to that.i find more contructive next part of your mail. :D Vale Some observations on the discussions so far: End Market Is this thing a professional video editor or is it something for home use. There is a very big difference in scope between the two, both for the programmer and for the end user. What are you trying to achieve. Scripts and Libraries I would worry about the architecture of the thing first. Right now the code extremely tangled with many opportunities for non-deterministic behavior. I assume that's why everyone is arguing about a re-write. My own opinion is that a re-design is needed first. Decouple all the bits and you can write a functional editing core while everyone else is still arguing about scripts and GUI's. Given the need for highly optimized/parallel code, I would classify the core as a non-trivial task. As an example (someone could verify this), I went into the existing decoder for mpeg2 and commented out the DCT routines to see if the mmx routines made any difference, I got about a 5% reduction in frame rate - with no transform mmx or otherwise. Further experiments made the same way lead me to believe that most of the playback overhead is outside of the actual decoding. Tracing the flow through the decoder was itself a non-trivial task. De-Interlacing Fine if it's the only alternative, but the interpolation yields a soft image. Interlace, 24P et al. The choice of a particular format is really a creative decision. The common wisdom says interlace for video and sports, progressive (esp. 24P) for storytelling. Ultimately the medium is a tool through which a individual vision is realized. There is no right answer. A creative person can work well in any medium, no matter how limited, but it can be a pain (that also applies to programming). Right now we are locally doing 60i, 720, 24 and 30P. and 1080i. After spending some time with real progressive formats (not post or in-camera processed) I personally would like to see interlacing die a horrible death, but as I noted above, that is only one person's opinion. I do agree that interlaced formats are likely to win in the consumer space. 1080 is a bigger number. Format and feature specifications should follow the identification of the end market. Who's gonna use this ??? What camera's are they likely to use. What are they shooting. What are they going to do to the footage. What's the distribution format, etc etc. That's probably too much already, but I would love to see a successful project here. There really is no other alternative on Linux. I do appreciate the efforts of the community here to try and fix up the existing codebase, but it really appears to be too hard. The upstream compatibility requirement is too restrictive, and even without that you are fighting the design. hi, i'm debian user, snip! so i did make ubuntu packaging but really never use them.i'll have a look at machine i used to compile ubuntu :D thx for report!!! Vale Before I start I would introduce myself: I am new to Cinelerra and relatively new to linux (a newbie), so do not slaughter me if I am wrong (by the way, I am not a native English speaker). The problem is that the binaries for Feisty 64bits (deb http://giss.tv/~vale/ubuntu64 ./) are working perfectly, appart from that SEVERAL plugins are missing (such as Brightness/Contrast, Gamma and others). Obviously this situation leaves cinelerra unusable (mainly in terms of color management). I wonder if this is the right place for posting this, I hope so, since the repository appears in cinelerra's offcial manual / wiki. Another problem that I found is that I could not get in touch with the specific person who build these .debs (Valentina?). Perhaps someone in this mailing list have Valentina's contact, so then this information could be passed in to her. The problem is perfectly reproducible with 64bits cinelerra debs and feisty 64bits.
