RE: ACRC cram time question
Summary addresses are not always configured from (config-router) mode. When configuring summary addresses with OSPF they are configured in the (config-router) mode. When configuring EIGRP you just enter the networks in (config-router) mode and then you can either use auto-summary or no auto-summary. You can configure a summary address on a per interface basis with the command: int e0 ip summary-address eigrp Regards, Aaron K. Re: Difference Between T1 & Frame relay
Briefly, T1 is a layer one specification describing a digital, point to point circuit made up of 24 64k channels, each with 8k of inband signalling. The aggregate as many has mentioned is 1.544Mb/s Frame Relay is a layer two specification describing a packet switched network. The confusion likely stems from marketing docs from telco's and the like that describe the two as comparable "services." When considering WAN options, it is not unheard of to compare dedicated, T1 services vs frame relay services between two areas. In these cases keep in mind that the telco or carrier is referring to a service in which case it can be said that T1 and Frame are comparable "services" However, technically, the two technologies are very different. OSI or layered wise, on a T1 circuit, one may run PPP, or HDLC, or Frame Relay among other technologies at layer 2. Hope that helps Pete *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 5/22/00 at 9:51 AM John Zaggat wrote: >Can some one clearly explain the difference between T1 >and Frame relay, Does T1 run over Frame relay circuits >? Re: Help with Frame Relay over DTE/DCE cable
You can build a tiny frame cloud with two routers, I'm doing it now until I get my other two. (im using a 2502 with IOS 11.2 and a 2501 with IOS 12.0). What I do is : frame switch: frame-relay switching int interface encapsulation frame-relay ip address x.y.z.a mask frame-relay intf-type dce clockrate 100 frame-relay interface-dlci 100 I read that you don't use the interface-dlci command unless you have multiple dlci's on one physical connection (using subinterfaces), but if I dont do that, or a route statement, the dte router can't use inverse arp..neither router is aware of dlci numbers. Using this configuration, I can't ping my side of the dlci, but it doesn't seem to break anything.. Richard Holland CCNP,MCSE > Well Bob, are you trying to build this with only 2 routers? What point to upgrade?
Hi all, At what point, generally speaking, should an office upgrade their network to a router/switch configuration and higher bandwidth? I know there are usage factors involved, but any rough ideas how many machines could efficiently work off of one server and IP with cable internet? Said office would have an internet presence, presumably their own domain and email server. Is the consideration for a router and subnetworks strictly an organizatinal consideration? That is; putting sales on a subnet, marketing on theirs, etc. Any input, or links to network consideration overviews, greatly appreciated. FAQ site not up after all
Hiya, Im CC'ing this mail to the PR training chap at cisco for his reference. Im not publishing the faq site after all until I get permission etc. from cisco to use their trademarks (I hadnt realised I needed to get written permission etc. to use all the certification names etc.) I dont want to annoy them as I wouldnt mind working for them at some point in my career :) The FAQ site project is on hold until I hear back from them as I understand a number of other sites were asked to close down, and the name cisco-help.net may be viewed as a trademark infringement (from what I hear it probably will, so Ive removed the web address that was in DNS for it) - I have to work this one out, but hopefully Ill get an OK from cisco. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to help provide information. Hopefully we'll get going again soon. h. Im thinking heavily about this. Technically both of the newsgroups are a trademark infringement, and Im wondering how many poster's and webmasters have got written permission to uss CCNA, CCNP etc. before typing them out. Anyone providing info (i.e. answering a question) and using the trademark doing so is violating that trademark as far as I can see, although Im not a lawyer, this is just how Im interpreting what Ive been told. Also how many company's out there are there with cisco or ccwhatever in their name? Im hoping that as Im attempting to create this site as a study guide, Ill just have to follow the application procedure like book publishers do (UK law puts websites with book publishing etc.) My aim is just to put up some good cisco study material, and links to other sites of use, but Im not sure how I could do a study guide about cisco certifications (or an FAQ for the alt.cert.cisco group) without mentioning any of the trademarks! Everyone keep your fingers crossed Ill be able to proceed with just some controls like www.sunhelp.com have. Im sure cisco, being something of an internet phenomenon have drawn up guidelines on their names being used on the internet. Re: Help with Frame Relay over DTE/DCE cable
Well Bob, are you trying to build this with only 2 routers? I am not sure you can do that... Typically it looks like this: R1---Frame Switch (R2)---R3 R2 (the frame switch) provides DCE to both R1 and R3. Set the clockrate on one of the switch interfaces. R2 needs the following: Frame Relay Switching enabled (frame-relay switching) DCE set on each interface (frame-relay intf-type dce) Clockrate configured (clockrate 56000) Frame Relay Route statements to announce DLCI's to each side and connect the R1 and R3 into a PVC. (frame-relay route 102 s0 201) R1 and R3 need: Frame Relay encapsulation on the serial interface that is connected to the switch. (encapsulation frame-relay) Optional: You may want to configure frame-relay map statments on R1 and R3 to turn off Inverse-Arp. This step is optional. You may also wish to configure the Frame Relay LMI type... If you are trying to configure only half of the connection, ie one router as DTE and one router as the switch, I don't think that this will work. You may see LMI going back and forth (debug frame lmi), but I don't think so. You certianly will not see the interface stay up because the PVC is not complete. I have not tried to configure the switch to route right back out the same interface (frame-relay route 102 s0 102) to see if it will receive frames on s0 and send them out on s0 too, but I don't think it is legal to do this... You may need to get a 3rd router to make this work (if you do not alreay have one.) I hope this helps... RE: Difference Between T1 & Frame relay
Think of T1 as a speed designator only. In practice, it usually means a point-to-point circuit or sometimes an ISDN PRI, but basically it just indicates an overall speed of 1.544Mbs. Frame relay is a technology that can be used over a T1 circuit (originally designed for a BRI, if you can believe it...). Frame relay divides the T1 pipe into 24 channels (some or all of which may actually be used). It's usually characterized by, among other things, virtual circuits. This divides the bandwidth of the T1 up into timeslices (DLCIs) which allow connections from one point to one or more remotes over the same physical interface. When speaking about the actual circuit (the wire), the T1 is layer 1. But in the meaning of point-to-point (PPP protocol), it is layer two. Whenever you're not clear what the other person means, have them spell it out for you so you're both on the same page. Frame relay is a layer 2 protocol. If you *really* want to delve into Frame, I *HIGHLY* recommend the following book: Frame Relay: Technology and Practice by Jeff T. Buckwalter List Price: $39.95 Hardcover - 368 pages 1 edition (December 7, 1999) Addison-Wesley Pub Co; ISBN: 0201485249 It's written in textbook format, and jumps right into the meat of Frame Relay. When I was shopping for a book on the subject, the only other contender I could find started me back at the OSI model and the 1970s when everybody had IBM SNA mainframes. I much preferred Buckwalter's approach. Hope this helps. Holler back if you need more. Re: Difference Between T1 & Frame relay
Frame Relay refers to the data network that your provider uses to get data from one endpoint to another. Inside their frame relay cloud, they usually run ATM, but that's another matter entirely. T-1 is a digital line that is used to access the frame relay network. so, you have this: Router --> CSU/DSU -(T-1)-(frame cloud)... There are other options for accessing the frame cloud, but T-1 or a fractional T-1 are the most common. You could also have a T-1 point-to-point circuit and choose not to use frame relay. In this case, you could use some other layer 2 encapsulation such as HDLC or PPP. Your choice all depends on your needs and your budget. > Can some one clearly explain the difference between T1 > and Frame relay, Does T1 run over Frame relay circuits > ? Re: Runts and Gaints
Not exactly, remember CSMA/CD (Collision Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detect) Collision Sense tells you to check to see if any other NIC is using the wire before you start to transmit. However, after you start to transmit, you should still check for collisions. After all, another NIC (in error) could start to transmit while you are still sending your message. If you detect a collision after you start to transmit, you stop transmitting and you will cause a runt if the frame is 64 octets or shorter. One cause of runts could be a NIC in full-duplex mode on a half-duplex collision domain. i had experienced a huge increase in runts in a router which came from a novell server after groupwise was installed.Later some configuration changes were made and this reduced the runts but the runts only disappeared after it was unnstalled . Study guide for CWMIO
Does anybody know if there's a study guide for exam 641-459 CWMIO which is a component of CCNP WAN Switching. BTW, cisco just post its new foundation 2.0 for CCNP beta test dates. Just use s0 Billy, you'll be fine. The s0/0 notation refers to the slot/port of the serial interface. This has to do with different hardware than you are using. As you get your hands on more and more different router models, you will find one with a hardware configuration that requires you to use the s0/0 notation... I hope this helps! Help me. :- Regarding E&M connectivity to EPABX
Hi Can anybody tell me how to connect E&M port to an EPABX? I have a 1750-2V router with WIC-2E/M card. I measured the voltage at the output of the card and I am not getting any voltage either in E ( PIN-7) or in M ( PIN-2) leads. only 51V is measured at the Signal Battery Lead ( PIN -1) Without voltage at E lead how can we connect to the rotuer?? I have configured for 4 wire , Type 5 , wink-start. signalling. Can anybody tell me how to connect the E&M port so that when I dial the access code, i will get the tone from rotuer?? SYS-2-GETBUF, dead router
Today after lunch I found my primary 3640 dead (at a momento of minimum load I must say), connecting to the console showed the rommonitor prompt. Since there was some urgent need and I had some users on my back already a quick powercycle "solved" the thing, however I'd like to find the reason. Logs didn't show much: May 22 13:33:13 ciscor1 87115: May 22 13:33:12.260 met-dst: %SYS-2-GETBUF: Bad getbuffer, bytes= 54361 May 22 13:33:13 ciscor1 87116: -Process= "", ipl= 1 May 22 13:33:13 ciscor1 87117: -Traceback= 6018A1E4 60094498 600948D0 60094D40 600244E0 May 22 13:33:59 ciscor2 36580: May 22 13:33:58.746 met-dst: %DUAL-5-NBRCHANGE: IP-EIGRP 213: Neighbor x.y.z.11 (Ethernet0/0) is down: holding time expired Search on CCO found unrelated items or "getbuf might appear" in 3640 release notes without further info. Any idea where to look ? Should I query TAC ? Oh BTW this is a 3640 with 48MB ram, usually 25MB free, C3640-IS-MZ_112-12_P.BIN, uptime was 140 days (since 2 Jan, after all the y2k tests I added a couple of WIC-1T since everything else was down anyway ). Lots of smallish connections, all of which low bandwidth (x25 on a 128kb serial, a 64k framerelay, some isdn dialers) except one 2MB leased line going around 60% usage and a bridge to token ring usually at load 2/255. A bit of NAT (one on a int eth connected directly to another cisco with a 64kb CIR link only) Overall I'd say it's doing several things but shouldn't really sweat, also CPU is about 15% with some (few) spikes at max 30%. Im wondering if it would be possible to decide on a common way to firlter these messages. some ppl use the alias CISCO to send out this email, and as a result they do not get filtered by the group email address. this is a problem for me at least, and maybe for others, since i get a lot of mail from cisco, and i get this groups mail mixed in it. THis list generates a lot of messages, over 600 a week, being that this is substantial, id like to ask that there be a comon way for every1 to decide how to filter these emails. id like to suggest the always simple way, send it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] , and not cisco. that or groupstudy would work. comments apreciated. FTP Throughput
Hello Friends, We face a peculiar problem in our company. We have a 512K access speed to Internet. Our ISP is VSNL in India. When we do an FTP, we never achieve a throughput greater than 100Kbps...Very funny thing here is we peak to 512K on our local link to VSNL, if we initiate simultaneous FTPs. But for all the FTP sessions, the maximum throughput achieved is only 80 to 100 Kbps. Is there anyway to restrict the throughput to a limit for a single session in the internet cloud, which could be creating this problem for us.Can some expert throw some light on this please.? Warm regards and Thanks in advance Venkat ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Unable to load IOS to flash
Hi all, I'm having a problem loading an updated version of the IOS into the flash on a 7206 router. Currently, it has 128MB of RAM, a 4 port 10 BaseT card, a 1 port 100 BaseT card and a 1 port AUI controller. It also has an NPE 150 installed. The original IOS that came with it (I forget the version) doesn't support the NPE, so we need to update it. Currently it boots from a TFTP server to keep it running, but that isn't a very good solution. I'm not certain of the exact error message, but it mentioned something about a bad block in the image. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Any debugging tips?
