2000-07-15 Thread Ishtiaque Mahbub

Hello!

Thanks a lot for the information. Have been trying to source the BGP book
"Internet Routing Architecture" but you would not believe what the book
sellers here in Bangladesh tell me. "It would take another couple of
months..." I cant wait that long.and it is very hard to buy from the
Internet, due to some regulations anyway, since you mentioned the
url is suffice to pass the exam...that is engough for me!!

But a minor mistake in the link, the actual link i think is:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ics/icsbgp4.htm

The "p" is missing from the urlanyway, thanks a lot!!!

cisco press errors--2nd post

2000-07-15 Thread Dan West

I noticed at least one error in the "Routing TCP/IP"
book involving a subnet address.

I am wondering if anyone knows where to get ahold of
corrections for these kinds of errors. -- From Cisco
Press or otherwise. I have heard similar complaints in
the past.

Thanks again.

Re: Boson CCDA Test

2000-07-15 Thread Robert Yee

I took the CCDA exam today. I used the Boson tests as part of my studies.
There were many questions on Boson that were VERY similar to the real test. It
is a good tool to use. The scenarios are a bit easier than the real thing. I
would try and study as many different scenario sources as possible to get the
feel for it.

2000-07-15 Thread Robert Yee

I would recommend the Hutnik-Satterlee book, CCIE All-In-One Lab Study
Guide. The are lab examples of BGP, EIGRP and OSPF.

I took the class a few weeks ago and we didn't cover IS-IS exceptto mention
it. Most of the class was on BGP (2 1/2) days.

Re: Any comments on using 2620 for VPN?

2000-07-15 Thread Robert Yee

Eric,

We have 2 remote offices that run VPN to our HQ over DSL. The router that we
use are 2611's with 64 MB DRAM and 16 MB flash. We are using 12.1(2)T. Previous
to 12.1(2)T, we used another version of IOS (I can't remember which one), but
it gave us allsorts of headaches. The SF office has been up for about 1 month
w/out a single problem.

The NY office goes live this Thursday. I've been testing it here at home for
about a week and it has been pretty good.

Re: 7204/7204VXR

2000-07-15 Thread Andy

Jim,

the 7204 and 7204VXR are very similar (also the 7206/VXR) - all the line
cards are interchangable, the difference is that the VXR variant has a more
advanced backplane, and is optimized for Voice switching, although is also
great then you want more performance than a non-VXR 7200, but don't want to
jump up to the 7500s

RE: Router Configuration

2000-07-15 Thread William E Gragido

Hi Adele-

Are you asking how as in IOS and hardware components? If so, the first
thing you need to do is purchase(assuming that you have not already done
so), an ISDN module for that router. Your options for that router are the
1-port ISDN BRI (s/t) or the (U). That particular router(I just installed
one yesterday!), defaults with one 10Mbps Ethernet interface, and one serial
port. In as far as the IOS commands to configure Frame Relay and ISDN, its
the standard fair. I would sit down and really diagnose what services are
in the most demand, calculate your average user activity and need and then
decide upon which line will provide what services. Better yet you could
always divide your T1 for your day to day services operating off of the
earlier mentioned scenario and dedicate the ISDN line as your fault tolerant
back up. Just a thought.

Re: Need help with COnfiguring Cisco 2514 and Cable modem

2000-07-15 Thread John Hardman

Hi

There are several things that you can do that will increase your
knowledge...

1) Setup the 2514 with NAT/PAT. This will allow you to connect multiple
network devices to the internet.

2) Setup firewalling/ACLs on the 2514. I would recommend the IOS FW feature
set with DES.

3) If your work will allow it, setup a VPN between the two networks.

There are a lot of things you would learn doing these items.

RE: Router Configuration

2000-07-15 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

If you're a member of CertificationZone, you might want to check their CCNA archives.
May featured a challenge lab that parallel's the network design you're referencing.
The solution to the challenge lab featured one suggestion as to how to configure the
desktop systems for gateway addressing, identified the topology of the network, and
included router configurations.

Re: CCNA expires 2002?????

2000-07-15 Thread Roman

They wouldn't make you retake the CCNA test if you are a CCNP would
they? I know that nobody knows the answer to this, I'm just thinking out
loud. Also...if you recertify as a CCNP, do you have to take ALL 4 tests
again? That would stink. Food for thought.

RE: Windows based sniffer

2000-07-15 Thread Daniel Cotts

Consider EtherPeek from AG Group. Think that it is www.aggroup.com
All the SEs in the old INS (now Lucent NetworkCare) used it. I think that
Cisco is making it part of the tools that their SEs carry. Think that you
can download a demo version. There is a demo version on the CD that ships
with Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guide (for ver 1). Can't comment if it
included on a later edition.

EtherPeek has a great user interface and is much less expensive than
Network General's Sniffer. Network General is now Network Associates, by
the way.

One negative regarding EtherPeek is that its EIGRP decode is useless. It
doesn't show you what is really happening. EtherPeek is fine for OSPF and
RIP, by the way. I haven't tried it on BGP.

Title: SMTP access list

I think you need to have the 3rd line because if you do not,
then all other traffic will be denied.

  Elmer,

The router applies the first match and neglects
  the remaining lines.
i.e. in your example, only any traffic from the 3
mentioned sources & carrying smtp will be allowed. Note that the last
2 lines are unnecessary, as the implicit deny any will apply in all
  cases.
To make it clearer, suppose we have something
  like:
  access-list 176 permit
tcp 193.128.233.177 0.0.0.0 any eq smtp log
  access-list 176 deny
tcp 193.128.233.177 0.0.0.0 any eq smtp
  access-list 176 permit ip
  any any

The smtp traffic from the mentioned host will be
permitted although it's denied in the second line.

  I hope this helps.

the entries even after a match has

the last few lines it encounters a "deny", what does the router
do?
Example: access-list 176 permit tcp 193.128.233.177 0.0.0.0 any eq smtp log
access-list 176 permit tcp 203.23.83.180
0.0.0.0 any eq smtp log access-list 176
permit tcp 203.35.182.133 0.0.0.0 any eq smtp log . . . . access-list 176 deny ip 193.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 any
log access-list 176 deny ip 203.0.0.0
0.255.255.255 any log

RE: DLSW Filters / Border Peers

2000-07-15 Thread Jaeger, Dennis (CC-Network Dev)

Hello Padhu,
I do not run border peer in a group. What I have is two 7204 VXR
chassis that we have dedicated to DLSW. These routers are located in the
core and all remote locations peer to one of these routers for DLSW
connectivity. Each remote router peers to one 7204 and has a backup peer
coded that points to the other 7204. We run promiscuous on the 7204s which
enables the remote peers to use the backup in case their primary peer fails.
Here is what i code on the 7204 DSLW routers:

dlsw local-peer peer-id 172.xx.xx.xx promiscuous
dlsw icannotreach sap F0

Here is what I code on the remote peers:

dlsw local-peer peer-id 172.xx.xx.xx
dlsw remote-peer 0 tcp 172.xx.xx.xx lsap-output-list 200
dlsw bridge-group 1
access-list 200 permit 0x 0x0D0D

I hope that this helps. Regards, Dennis

Hello Don,

DLSW has enabled me to pass dozens of LU6.2 APPC sessions throughout my
network with little impact.

1. Yes. Use DLSW Icannotreach sap filters to screen out all but SNA traffic
on your DLSW pipes. You can also use an access-list that will do this on
the remote peers:

access-list 200 permit 0x 0x0D0D

then apply this ACL on the peer statement in the remote router:

dlsw remote-peer 0 tcp x.x.x.x {dlsw peer ip addr} lsap-output-list 200

This should help keep all but SNA from hogging the bandwidth.

I run promiscuous peering on my core DLSW routers with icannot reach sap
filters and have the remote router establish the peer via remote peer
statements and the ACL listed above. If you have multiple DLSW core routers
you can also use the backup peer statement on your remote peers; but only if
you are running promiscuous on your core peers.

Hope this helps. Regards, Dennis

DSLw or DSLw+ is the way to encapsulate SNA into an IP packet for
transport across the WAN. It will require you to create a peer connection
form one side of the WAN to a router on the otherside. once this is done
the SNA will be encapsulated into IP for transport to the peer partner. In
setting this up you may want to consider having the router at the remote
location establish the peering connection. That will reduce the cycles on
your main networks router, should a WAN connection, DSU, or interface
fail. You will still need bridging turned on, but will not have to bridge
other protocols unless you need them.

Well Gang,
I come to you feeling like the journey has just begun
and that the last year has been a trial to qualify for the Internetworking

Support 2.0 exam which makes me a newly minted CCNP.

It truly a pleasure to be a part of the group and as look towards getting
the CCDP and *CCIE* I will again turn to the masses to shed light on the
many topics that confront us in this technological age.

As most of the newly minted CCNP's that have come before me this is how I
got here. It only took a year

CCNA - June 99

A bunch of betas Jan 00 - April 00
Routing 2.0
Switching 2.0
Remote Access 2.0 -- missed this one
Support 2.0 --- missed this one too...

July 00
Remote Access 2.0
Support 2.0 <- Thanks, Priscilla for the flash cards

Chuck,
As always I look forward to next coming months as so many of the
group gear up their efforts towards the CCIE.. Things should get pretty
interesting..

Well, last but not least thanks to everyone that participates in this
awesome group giving us all something to do with the rest of lives...

Re: DHCP on Router!!

2000-07-15 Thread JCoyne

I have seen posts for the last year asking if it was possible to
use a dual Ethernet Cisco router (2514 for example) with
MediaOne. Until now the answer to this question was no,
because the Cisco routers would not accept a DHCP lease
on an Ethernet interface. I just successfully tested IOS 12.1.(2)T
in the lab. The following is a basic NAT overload configuration
for use with MediaOne.

*** You can not use any other IOS for this including IOS 12.1.(3) ***

config t
ip nat inside source list 1 int e0 overload
access-list 1 permit 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255

int e0
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
ip nat inside

int e1
ip address dhcp
ip nat outside

Set your IP address somewhere between 10.1.1.2 - 10.1.1.254
with a subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and your default gateway to
10.1.1.1 For those of you who know anything about Cisco you
can also program the router to act as a DCHP server for the LAN
but that is beyond the scope of what Iam trying to explain here.

Do you have any idea what that copst was titled in the subject line, I have
already tried several variations of Undocumented commands maybe even a
general recollection would be very helpful. Thanks

Re: Multilayer Switching vs. External Router

2000-07-15 Thread Tony Olzak

In multilayer switching, say as in a 6500 series switch with a MSFC
integrated into the supervisor, the performance is much better than using an
external router. The host hits their configured gateway (the IP address of
the VLAN interface on the MSFC) and the MSFC creates a virtual path through
the switching fabric for the source MAC address to hit the destination MAC
address. Only the first packet has to go through the router. The rest of the
packets will traverse the virtual path that allows any packets from the
original source to the destination to be multi-layer switched (does not need
to hit the router again). This virutal path stays up until the configured
timeout expires and the virtual path goes away.

This whole process allows the switch to effectively route the packets at
layer 2 instead of layer 3. Using an external router, your packets would
have to exit the switch, hit the router, then come back to the switch to
their destination. See the difference?

Re: Some ISDN PRI questions

2000-07-15 Thread Adam Quiggle

Kent,

If you are using RBS it is because you are using ISDN PRI.
Subsequently, you have 24 channels running at 56Kbps for
data throughput. This means your bandwidth is as follows:

24channels * 56Kbps/Channel = 1344Mbps

If you are worried that because you are using ESF versus
SF with RBS that you have less bandwidth, then the answer
is no. Because we are missing one bit from two of our
channels with RBS, then we can't use that extra bit in any
of our channels, it literally goes wasted. ESF just uses more
of those wasted bits than does SF.

Does this answer your question?

Small PPP question

2000-07-15 Thread Master of Disaster

Hi guys,
I have a small problem.I was configured a syncronous PPP between two
routers over a serial link (using two modems - wich are ok - DCD
-up).All things was ok for a long time. Now I lost the IP connectivity
between them.If I try to see if one of the two serial interfaces used
are functional, I've got: "Serial is up, line protocol is up".In the
same time no one of those interfaces are responding to ping (of course
they are in the same subnet).

The question is: Which could be the reason of network layer connectivity
lost?I suppose that "line protocol is up" means that data link layer are
ok.

Thanks in advance guys for your help!
