Yes, there are filters. Take a look at 'set ip filter',
'reset ip filter' and 'show ip filter' command. All 3 are
usable in profile and global mode.

But, I'm not sure that you will succeed in blocking ICQ.

RE: Another New CCIE Book

2000-08-04 Thread McCallum, Robert

Although there maybe a new book out at the most it will only give people a
chance to pass the written exam (BIG DEAL). As the last posts have
stated this will only make the lab exam more frightening as the fail rate
will shoot up incredibly. IF people reckon they can read this book, pass
the written then toddle along to the lab with enough ammo to pass then we
are all in for a right laugh!

Haven't even opened it yet. Just bought based on the QUE name and it has a
CD with 240 questions.

I allow myself a generous book allowance in my business so I thought I'd
have a look. It was only published in June 2000 so I also thought a newer
book would be interesting what with the new stuff being added to the CCIE
track.

It is indeed geared to the written (hence the 350-001 in the title).

I like your comment on strengthening the CCIE cert through the increased
fail rate on the lab.

Re: CCNA 2.0

2000-08-04 Thread Dale

I used CISCO PRESS 640-407 CCNA book for the 2.0. Reason is becaus eI bought
it before the 507 came out and it worked fine. I also used transcenders and
troytecs study guide. However, don't memorize them, use them as study
guides to dig back in your book. The exam requires some thinking and you
will have to know all of your stuff.. I believe the 2.0 doesn't have any
appletalk or x.25 stuff anymore.

We've used Cisco 2621s with HP Procurve, dot1q encapsulation without
any problems. You'll probably have to configure the VLANs manually as
opposed to VTP, but I can't see why they wouldn't play well together.

What is the difference between E1/T1 controller and the serialpo rt?

2000-08-04 Thread Sim, CT (Chee Tong)

Dear Friends,

I had a question on the E1/T1 conroller port? Previously we have a project
connecting for VoIP, we connect the E1/T1 port of 3810 router to the PABX
and serial port to the WAN

My question

1)What is the difference between E1/T1 controller port and the serial port?
Do E1 need ip address to be configured?

2)Can we use E1 controller to connect to the internet service provider?

3)I heard of E1 link (2M) and T1 link (1.544M) Does these two term related
to E1/T1 port of the router? That's mean if we want to have E1 link speed
we got to use E1/T1 port to connect? Is that true?? Then What I should do
if I need a E3 link

4)What router model got E1/T1 controller installed except 3810

761 ip config problems

2000-08-04 Thread Thomas Werner

Hello,

I am configuring a cisco 761M and experiencing some problems.
When I setup an ip address / netmask ( 10.0.0.200/24 ) for the router
via the config port the router can be successfully pinged from the lan.
Everytime I set up an ip address for a profile ( 192.168.1.1/24 ) the
pings from the lan don´t reach the router anymore. But the LAN and
Internal profiles both have the right lan address ( 10.0.0.200/24 ).

Also I would like to know if it is possible to authenticate a dialin
user ( win98 via isdn ) on a Windows NT domain where the 761 resides.

Thanks for help

Review of BSCN: Building Scalable Cisco Networks

2000-08-04 Thread Raj Ranger

Review of BSCN: Building Scalable Cisco Networks

1 out of 5 starsIncomplete Coverage - Missing PSV Protocol

Reviewer: A Humble Reviewer from Rehoboth Beach, DE

This book has incomplete coverage of the topics required to pass the test.
For example they left out all detail of the PSV Protocol that they have
implemented at McGraw Hill.

You might ask what is the PSV Service. Well it stands for Poop Shoot
Violator Service. McGraw Hill has quite evidently implemented this protocol
in BSCN Book but failed to mention its implementation to you the
unsuspecting buyer. They should have clearly mentioned that when you buy
this book you are signing up for two (2) Poop Shoot Violations of yourself.
One (1) for buying the book and not getting any details from it. Two (2) for
then going to take the test, thus paying another hundred bucks, and getting
a second and more expensive Poop Shoot Violation. Thus it is felt by this
reviewer that the PSV Protocol should have been explained in the Disclaimer
section of the Book.

I'd commit suicide to if the only local act worth listening to was Pearl

RE: where do live

2000-08-04 Thread Ohsfeldt, Miles E.

Jim,

I feel I'm letting the cat out of the bag here, but you might want to see if
you can get an interview or two in Albuquerque, NM. I don't live there now,

but would jump at the chance. That city has been rated very highly as "one
of the
best places to live" in the U.S. each year for the last decade.
My experiences with Albuquerque are that it's nestled in beautiful
mountains, doesn't
get huge amounts of rain (Seattle), doesn't get bunches of feet of snow
(Denver), doesn't
have traffic and pollution problems (L.A.), is not steamy hot all summer
long,
(Houston/Phoenix), and is one of the cleanest cities in North America. It's
not so big that
your commute is very long, and cost of living is very reasonable (although
salaries
will reflect the cost of living).

Good luck searching!

Hello,

I'm so tired of working 60-70 hours a week; I'm so
tried of paying $3,500 mortgage per month for a 1,300
sqf home; I'm so tired of driving on that crowed
highway (if you consider 5MPH is high). I'm thinking
moving out of silicon valley bay area.

Where, in US, can I find a place that is not cold in
winter, not hot in summer, no too much snow, no too
much rain, IT job market not too bad? I know it's
difficult to find such a place, but close?

Thanks in advance.

Without playing with a router, I think you could probably do like a
route-map statement that uses an access list, i.e. if packet = this, set

Does anyone have any idea on forcing the destination address

Re: ccie written/job?

2000-08-04 Thread Lawrence Dwyer

Sabeen,
The Caslow and the Hutnik All in one books are primarily for the Lab. Halabi
and Doyle (or similar) are pretty essential for understangin IP routing
protocols. You CCNP books might do you well for the IGP, but chances are they
don't go into any depth for BGP. I would also greatly recommend Radia Perlman's
Interconnections 2nd. The Internetworking Technology Handbook was also a great
help for protocols I was unfamiliar with.

Re: collision

2000-08-04 Thread Jim Deane

I have seen collisions like this as a result of a duplex mismatch between
the router interface and the switch port. Autonegotiation doesn't always
work reliably, especially between vendors. You may want to specify the
speed and duplex of both the router's interface, and the switch port that
the router is plugged into.

Jim

You can go to it's home page at:  www.anxo.com
You can also go to the Overseer's site at:  www.saic.com and look under their ANX section off their home page.

Look under their CSP (Certified Service Provider) section for more information on what companies can provide you connectivity.

I'm sure that these 'people' can do web searches just fine!!!
The fact of the matter is, this list is comprised of people from the same
field, with like goals! Asking for recommendations on books that others
have
already read is an excellent way to decide what material 'people' are going
to use
to study for the tests!!! If 10 people come back and say a book suckes, it
probably
did!!! This type of information is one of the most useful parts of a
mailing list!

Subject:reg cisco 2610

sir,

1. i want to know whether cisco 2610 router supports ip version 6 & also

Yes. There is a beta Ipv6 IOS for the 26xx platform. Must have a CCO login
to obtain
http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl

a test has to be done.

Let us know how it goes. I'll bet a lot of folks here are curious

2. what is meant by fan, processor, critical cards, flash (redundancy)
with respect to cisco 2610

Probably the same things they mean on other routers, and indeed on other
tech equipment. There is a cooling fan in the power supply. Helps keep
things inside the box operating at a bearable temperature.. processor = cpu
= the brains that run things. Critical cards? I suppose that means the cards
inserted into the slots to provide whatever functionality you desire - ISDN.
T-1, and more. Flash is where the IOS image is stored. Flash redundancy?
Don't know. The 3640 platform offers dual flash slots. I don't know if the
26xx does or not.

3.does cisco 2610 supports non disruptive hot swap of modules in case
of failure

don't know. You could try looking it up on CCO

4. does cisco 2610 supports encryption :

with the appropriate IOS image, yes indeed DES and 3DES

these are the commands for encryption:

   router#conf t
router-config# crypto key generate dss key-name interface serial 0/0
   router-config# exit
router-confg# crypto key exchange dss passive 1880

well, some of them, anyway

5 when we give the bgp command as router bgp , the error message rcd
is unknown protocol.
what is the proper procedure to configure bgp protocol?

Router BGP AS# e.g router BGP 100
There are some good references on CCO for setting up BGP.
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/12cgcr/np1_c
/1cprt1/1cbgp.htm
for example

expecting ur reply at the earliest

it's certainly early here!

Friday Follies Returns!!!!!!! - A small Puzzle

2000-08-04 Thread Chuck Larrieu

All right, guys and gals! This marks the return ( in a small way ) of
Chuck's Friday Follies

I have a bit of a puzzle for you all. If you all have some fun, and think
this might be worth pursuing, I can try to continue the Follies on some
regular basis.

A bit about courtesy and fair play, before we begin. I am opening my study
lab to the internet, in a small way at first. But if things work out, then
perhaps this can be one more means of study for many of you. So play nicely,
please. Help me to help you.

OK, the puzzle.

You will telnet into a router. The IP address is 64.220.150.9 Your password
is "yahoudi" ( no quotes )
Your mission is to answer the following questions:

1) what version of IOS is running?
2) What is the name of the IOS image?
3) What routing protocols are running?
4) Are there any other routers connected? If so, on what ports?
5) If there are other routers connected, what IOS versions are they running?
What are the names of the flash images on those routers, if there are
routers?
6) Provide every detail you can about any WAN protocols running
7) What is the privilege level password?
8) What model number router are you telneted into?
9) What model number routers are connected, if there are any connected?
10) Who played the Cisco Kid? ( extra credit - how did you find that
answer? )
11) Extra Extra credit - identify all security enabled on the router

I have no prizes to offer. But I do have the sincere hope that you all will
have some fun taking a peek and finding the answers to these questions

I look forward to seeing your answers and your discussion Friday evening,
when I return from a day of what most likely will be unpleasant meetings.

Have fun!! :->

Re: ccie written/job?

2000-08-04 Thread Dale Holmes

Sabeen - I hate to have to tell you this, but:

You will need SEVERAL more books. Doyle and Halabi are a bare minimum to add
to what you already have. The Cisco DOC CD will help, especially if you plan
to read everything on it... Do you know any Token Ring? DLSW+? SRB, SRTB?
FDDI? ATM? There is so much more...

Get the CCIE written exam blueprint and take a gander at all of those
topics... You've got some reading to do, that's for sure...

Check your setting in network login (ie. workgroup/domain name, don't log in

It seem to me that your win2k need to reconfigure/setup in your network

Just passed CID to complete CCDP! Got an 82 and finished up with 20 minutes

RE: collision

2000-08-04 Thread Deane, James

Umm. My understanding is that collisions are normal with a hub. The
hub itself is a single collision domain, as opposed to a switch wherein each
port is a collision domain. So, I don't think that you can get rid of
collisions in a hub environment. You could reduce them by eliminating
workstations from the hub, or by reducing the amount of traffic that each
station is generating (i.e. eliminate applications.)

I have the same problem (collisions on the switch port connecting to a 10
base-t hub.) And the switch port is set on speed 10. Any idea?

Re: Another New CCIE Book

2000-08-04 Thread Kevin Wigle

I bought the book mostly out of curiosity because of the June 2000 date on
it.

After flipping through it last night my first impressions aren't very
positive.

Which I probably should have expected as compared to other books, it's kinda
thin - physically. Not the tomes other CCIE books have been.

Not that size matters (yeah, right) but there is so much material required
for CCIE.

Also, I tried a few of the questions and it didn't take long for me find
ones I wasn't happy with vis a vis agreeing with their answers - but this
only gets you to dive into some other resource to verify that you are
right - a learning process either way.

On sober second thought I would wait on buying this one until a few members
of the list who are book nuts can review it more in depth.

I have that book and wasn't very impressed with it. And the CD-ROM questions
are a rehash of the printed questions.
I know it is too late for us too read a review but this may help someone
else.
I would only recommend it as an exam cram type book to speed read right
before the test. I would not recommend it as a primary study source.
I think that if you only use this book you are in for a suprise when you
take the test.

I have to agree here.  My company purchased the ForeFront CCNA CBT last year for my training.  The cost was $1800 (US), which also included ACRC.  While not bad for an overview, there were gaps left open in the end.  What I did find useful was the visualization that the CBT provided.  I used the books to get the complete coverage of the material and then the CBT for visualization of some of the more complex topics.  All in all, however, I don't think I would waste that much money again for CBTs.  I passed my next 3 CCNP tests with only books and resources from the web (well, this group too, of course!) and found this method, while somewhat lengthier, to be more complete.  If time is critical, take the class and get it over with.  You'll get class materials to continue your studies as well as an instructor to answer questions all day long (hopefully).

Good luck!

I had the one for the CCNA.  I really didn't like it much...
It had some good info, but it's too slow.  Too much clicking for the next
screen and stuff :-)  I just can't stand the format, I would rather read a
book.
If you can't take the actual class, buy a few good books :-)

I was @ an ATM conference 2 weeks ago and they talked about it. I personally

access to all that stuff. I like to do labs from the Cisco Press BCMSN,
Cisco Training BCMSN Guides from class, and such Cisco white papers as

Re: Another Oldie: Frame/Relay with 2 Switches in the middle VERY LONG POST!

2000-08-04 Thread Adrian Chew

Chuck,

Here's what I found on Cisco's website with your problem with IP/Frame
Relay...

Serial interfaces using HDLC, PPP, LAPB, and Frame Relay encapsulations, as
well as SLIP and tunnel interfaces, can be unnumbered. Serial interfaces
using Frame Relay encapsulation can also be unnumbered, but the interface
must be a point-to-point subinterface. It is not possible to use the
unnumbered interface feature with X.25 or SMDS encapsulations.

Adrian

2000-08-04 Thread Dale Holmes

They are excellent!

The labs from MentorLabs (www.mentorlabs.com) are very good at focusing on
specific skills. They are very modular and allow you to practice on the
things you feel you are weak on, or simply don't have access to at work.

The labs from CCBootCamp are absolutely essential for preparation for the
actual CCIE lab exam. Nowhere else online can you simulate the level of
complexity that you will find in the actual lab exam. You can purchase the
labs to run on your own equipment, or you can rent rack time and run it on
their equipment. Either way, Marc Russell (president of Network Learning who
runs CCBootCamp) is great to work with.

Some places offer free access to equipment and lab scenarios - I have not
tried them so I cannot speak to their effectiveness or value...

I hope this helps!

RE: where do live

2000-08-04 Thread Poyerd, Denis

Look at Colorado Springs, CO. I lived there for two years. Almost always
sunny and 70 degrees. Even in winter, it would get maybe a couple of days of
snow, but never horrible. Lotsa good companies in that location, lotsa
outdoor things to do.

Unfortunately there is none. . . The best way to go
has to be the cisco press books combined with boson

Cisco 3620 router ports

2000-08-04 Thread Frank Wells

Hey folks,
I have been looking on CCO to get the factory specs of a 3620 router but it
is not very clear what interfaces it ships with. I want to know if they come
with a 10/100 ethernet port right out of the box or are they completely
naked and you need to order every interface etc.

I don't want to call a sales person just to ask this trivial question.

www.bestbookbuys.com finds the best price on the book at about 30 online bookstores.

As far as I can tell, the best online place to get technical books is
www.bookpool.com

Everything is so much cheaper than Amazon and other online stores :-)

The MCRAN book is $42 on bookpool, compared to $60 on Amazon!!!

We already have high home prices, horrible traffic and tourists falling off

Why NDM instead of FTP ???

2000-08-04 Thread Lima, Frederico

Some can say NDM (new name CONNECT:Direct) does not have any performance
improvement over FTP, but if you take in consideration certain extended
compression features you'll see less bandwidth being utilized.

Actually, NDM does not belong to Sterling Software but to Sterling Commerce.
 http://www.stercomm.com
Yes, Sterling Software was bought by CA but Sterling Commerce was bought by
SBC Communications about 4 or 5 months ago.

NDM can offer other things over FTP such as encryption and checkpoint
restart. Also it has integration with some systems management tools and it
allows you to automate lots of stuff in your production environment, as well
as logging of all file transfer transactions for purposes of auditing, etc.

CONNECT:Direct is largely used by financial institutions for file
deliveries.
http://www.stercomm.com/solutions/products/ebi/connect/pdfs/CDOV.pdf

A new product is coming out from Sterling Commerce, named CONNECT:Enterprise
which supports also FTP, HTTP and ASYNC traffic on top of NDM stuff.

But if you really want to check a NDM x FTP white paper, go to :
http://www.stercomm.com/solutions/products/ebi/connect/pdfs/0500FTPwp.pdf

Oh my God. I thought I'd never have to hear about Connect:Direct and
Sterling software again. I spent three months working on an absolute
pain-in-the-side project with what I hope is an older version of the program
(project was 5 or 6 years ago). I ended up using DOS batch files to grab
the data from an AS400, parse it, rename the datafiles with Julian dates and
port it back and forth to a mainframe at another telco. What an absolute
bit of nonsense. Just to give you an idea of how complicated it was, I had
to flow-chart the batch files before I could hand the support over to the
operations group.

Let me know if you want my stuff from that period, I usually keep everything
and could find it for you...

Good luck...

Steve,

This sounds like Sterling Software's Network Data Mover (NDM), later known
as Connect:Direct. Sterling have been bought out by CA, so try looking at
www.ca.com for more info. CA have a product called CA:XCOM which does much
the same sort of thing, it could have been dropped in favour of this, you'll
need to dig around to find out what happened to it after the merger.

It is a file transfer package, with a scheduler and scripting tool,
originally used in a mainframe (SNA) environment, later enhaced for TCP/IP
trnasfers. It has NO benefit over FTP in terms of performance, but the bonus
is the script/schedule toollkit, which can be integrated into an MVS, UNIX
or NT environment (AFAIR), and includes hooks into things like OPCA, JES,
RJE etc.

I haven't seen it for a few years, but I recall it was reasonably OK, it had
a client that ran on OS/2 for SNA MF-PC transfers, and was a sod to get
running properly, but once it was running it ran forever. I saw the TCP/IP
version a few years ago, and thought it was OK, but I wasn't too interested
in the product at the time.

Hope this helps!

Regards

Pete S.

As far as I can tell, the best online place to get technical books is
www.bookpool.com

Everything is so much cheaper than Amazon and other online stores :-)

The MCRAN book is $42 on bookpool, compared to $60 on Amazon!!!
Just some info :-)

Hi Frank,

3620 and 3640 don't have any interfaces built-in. You have to order
everything. 3660 has built-in 10/100 Mbps ethernet.

simple routing problem?

2000-08-04 Thread Nick Tucker

I've recently been looking around in a network here, and basically take a
setup like this: (eigrp)

r1 <-> r2 <-> r3 <-> r4 <-> r5 <-> r6 <-> r7

consider r1 and r7 to be end points, and r5 to be a major hub router.

if i do a trace from r4 to r7 everything is fine
if i do a trace from r3 to r7, i get 2 bounces at r5, but it finishes at r7 ok
if i do a trace from r2 to r7, i get 3 bounces at r5, "
trace from r1 to r7 gets 3 bounces at r5 as well.

Now 1) Is this really a problem?, Traffic is going thru and latency times
are all that crazy since it is a mixed isdn and frame enviroment. 2) if it
IS a problem, is it not just a simple routing issue, like duplicate ips?

By the way, tracking from the other side back to r1 goes exactly as it
should. I've done sh ip routes from r1 r2 r3, etc to r5 and r7 and they
only have 1, so everything 'seems' to be behaving as it should.
I'm extremely new to this network I was messing with at the time and its
huge, so I wanted to learn a lot more about it before actually messing with
something. Rather than a straight solution, I'd perfer to see the steps
taken to get to that direction. Thanks for any help!

Hey guys, all you serious Cisco wannabes should register as a Cisco
Consultant or Cisco Reseller. (they're both free! and no exams required !!!)

You then get the product guide (both the book and CD) normally every
quarter.

Turn to the book and:

Cisco 3620

Fixed Ports-None
Network Module Slots - 2
AIM Slots - None(Advanced Integration Module)

Cisco 3640

Fixed Ports-None
Network Module Slots - 4
AIM Slots - None

Cisco 3660

Fixed Ports-1 or 2 10/100 Ethernet (3661 = 1 port, 3662 = 2 ports)
Network Module Slots - 6
AIM Slots - 2

This is the demilitarized zone. This is a part of the three part
firewall. This is the LAN in between the outside filter router and the inside

This way, if someone were to breach your outside filter by way of your www or
e-mail servers, the "hacker" would still not be inside your internal network
because they are on the other side of the inside router. Hence the

DHCP Over Wan Link

2000-08-04 Thread Patrick Stiever

Ladies and Gents,

This would be the first time trying to set this up, I have a remote
office with a frame-erlay link between them and the corporate site. The dhcp
server is at the corporate site, I would like to it up that the users at the
remote site uses a certain dhcp pool on that server. I have heard you can
set it up so that a certain address pool will only assign address when the
request comes through a certain router(i.e. the remote router). Does this
make any sense or have I been inhaling too many paint fumes again? Any help
would be great, thanks.

RE: Cisco virtual lab

2000-08-04 Thread Jon McCoy
Title: RE: Cisco virtual lab

I used it for the DV Routing protocols CIM.  It worked quite well for me, dunno if dial-up users have problems downloading.  The labs run within a Java window, and real-audio segments coach you through the steps.  It's not super-in-depth, but it takes you to a basic level of knowledge, without having a play lab.

It was very convenient to do the CIM over lunchtime, at work, or Saturday afternoons.  I didn't have any trouble finishing it within a month.  Compared to $250 to own the CD (which I probably wouldn't use more than once), the $120 was cheap.  Especially since some folks paid $2000+ for these courses a few months ago.

I used the Lan Switching CIM off the CD, and it was also very good.  The course material paralleled the CLSC official material, as did the labs.  After completing the CIM, I passed the CLSC easily.  Caveat:  CLSC is retired, and how this CIM relates to the new exam I do not know.

I have a copy of the Expert IP Lab, and I wouldn't say it was much of a day 1 sim -- maybe for the morning session.  Not having been, I cannot say for sure, but it didn't seem very difficult to me, realizing it only covers IP routing portion of the lab.

Has anybody checked out the Cisco Interactive Mentor?

www.cisco.com/go/cim

It is a site with 4 or 5 virtual labs and they claim the expert lab is a
simulation of day 1 for the CCIE lab.  It's pretty cheap at $150-$200 for 90
days of lab access.  So cheap it makes me wonder ..

www.bestbookbuys.com finds the best price on the book at about 30 online
bookstores.

As far as I can tell, the best online place to get technical books is
www.bookpool.com

Everything is so much cheaper than Amazon and other online stores :-)

The MCRAN book is $42 on bookpool, compared to $60 on Amazon!!!
Just some info :-)

Re: VPN 3DES ON 2MB Link with 25XX

2000-08-04 Thread Paul Lalonde

Hi Christophe,

The 2500-series routers would *NOT* be capable of performing 3DES processing
with a 2MB link. To put it into perspective, I recently spoke to an engineer
from Cisco and he confirmed that one of the higher end routers, the 3640,
will only perform 3DES encryption at a rate of 512Kbit. The 3640 is easily
10+ times faster than the 2500 series.

As well, a 1600-series router performing only DES (56-bit) encryption is
only capable of about 64kbit/sec processing. This router is comparable in
performance to the 2500-series. 3DES processing, then, would be far less and
would be VERY poor.

Therefore, the 2500 wouldn't even be capable of managing 64 Kbit or 128 Kbit
of 3DES processing. Your 2Mb link would be better served by something like
the Cisco VPN Concentrator 3005 or similar.

Regards,
Paul Lalonde, CCNP
