RE: what is dark fiber?
Hello, as far as I understood from the ISP's the "dark fiber" is the equivalent of a leased line: the ISP provides you the Physical connectivity between the endpoints, but they do not provide any routing This kind of commercial offer is mainly used by ISPs that use DWDM on their fibers and they can offer one wavelength to you. --- Gabriel Neagoe, GN379-RIPE Networking solutions consultant CCNP, CCDA S&T Romania tel: +401 20 40 300 fax: +401 20 40 310 --- > -Original Message- > From: Fomes Iain [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2000 4:04 PM > To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' > Subject: RE: what is dark fiber? > > > this is a misconception. > Dark fiber or Dark fibre as we can it here in England.God save the Queen > an > all that is actually a fibre based product that enables long distances to > be > covered.Where as fibre has approximatley a 2km depth, Dark fibre is able > to > run for much longer lengths. > i have seen it used for up to 20 30 40 miles > > > -Original Message- > > From: Richard Dennard [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > > Sent: 05 September 2000 19:53 > > To: bahadir korkmaz > > Cc: Cisco > > Subject:RE: what is dark fiber? > > > > dark fiber is a term usually used by providers to indicate fiber that > does > > not have light passing over it (unused). > > > > Richard Dennard > > Network Engineer > > HY_SPEED_DATA > > phone 814-260-3966 > > fax 814-274-7370 > > > > -Original Message- > > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of > > bahadir korkmaz > > Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2000 11:04 AM > > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Subject: what is dark fiber? > > > > > > hi. > > what is dark fiber? > > i found some sites that says dark fiber means unused fiber. > > is it so? > > i think dark fiber must be different then unused fiber. > > i mean for example. 10gigabit ethernet runs on dark fiber. > > dark must be something related to bandwidth or wavelength. > > > > if someone knows dark fiber definition i ll be happy. > > > _ > > Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at > http://www.hotmail.com. > > > > Share information about yourself, create your own public profile at > > http://profiles.msn.com. > > > > ___ > > UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html > > FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com > > Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > ___ > > UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html > > FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com > > Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > ___ > UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html > FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com > Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Look at VLANs for what they are, namely broadcast domains. There is not necessarily any need to put a host on a separate VLAN just because it is running a different routed protocol. Think in terms of total broadcasts for all hosts on the VLAN as a percentage of total traffic. Use guidelines spelled out in "Top Down Network Design," by Priscilla Oppenheimer for rules of thumb for max number of hosts on a VLAN (see page 103). That is a good starting point. There is a larger issue however, and it deals with a topic you have not mentioned. You are about to migrate to a switched network and you have not mentioned anything about MLS, or multilayer switching. MLS will provide the ability to route at wire speed. Nowadays, the fastest routers are able to perofrm at approximately 275k pps rate. With MLS properly configured, you can increase that well beyond the 1Mpps rate. Since the BCMSN course does not spend much time on IPX MLS, I will attempt to cover a few of the basics. First, there are only *two* MLS modes (unlike the three available in IP MLS). They are destination mode and destination-source mode. If you are not using any interior IPX access lists, you will run in destination mode and performance will be very zippy. OTOH, if you have IPX access lists, you will kick into destination- source mode for your MLS flows. This has zero effect on performance if you are using *outbound* IPX access lists. If you used inbound IPX access lists, then every single packet will be routed :-( You will need MLS capable switches with the approrpriate hardware (CAT5k and 6k et al with NFFC) and an internal RSM/RSFC or an extrnal MLS capable router. The only other restriction is that IPX accounting cannot work with MLS on, and the transport control max value field must be set to a value greater than 16 when using EIGRP for the routing protocol. Also most of the fields in an IPX extended access list will likely preclude the use of IPX MLS. Re: Win2k SNMP Traffic
I don't understand a few things in your post. First, I have had W2K Pro and Server in the lab and our findings are that W2K Pro does NOT install SNMP by default but Server DOES. So the W2K Pro machines should be ok. (like I said, that's our findings from doing the installs ourselves, Dell is maybe doing their own idea of pre-config). This was further shown to us as W2K of all stripes is forbidden from the network until it is rolled out properly. People install W2K server not knowing that SNMP is installed by default with the "public" community string. Our SNMP management tools pick them up immediately and we catch them and shut them down and they wonder how we found them so fast. W2K Pro on the other hand is more difficult to find and we use non-SNMP methods to find them. Next, SNMP has nothing to do with Network Neighbourhood. On my last network of over 12,000 devices, PCs show up in the 'Hood and they DON'T have SNMP configured. Only the servers, printers and routers/switches have SNMP enabled. Network Neighbourhood has a lot to do with WINS and browsing. So, what is probably happening is that W2K Pro machines are assuming the Master Browser Role for their subnets as NT (W2K Pro) is higher on the browser ladder than Win9x. Also, W2K Pro needs to be registered in the Domain Computer database so automatically the browse tables know about more computers than with Win9x. So, I'm not sure how to "fix" your problem. Actually what you're seeing is normal for a NT Workstation (W2K Pro). The only thing I can think of quickly is to disable browser advertisements of the W2K Pro machines. Also a lot of work unless it can be incorporated into a security policy applied to all W2K Pro machines at login. Offhand, I don't know of a way to target specific computer types in an IOS ACL. Trapping SNMP would disable SNMP for all devices. Re: netbios, whats it good for?
I can tell you how to get rid of Netbios, get rid of Windoze machines. Netbios is encapsulated within IP ( assuming you are using IP on WinXX machines ), even if you don't have Netbeui loaded. One of the best ways to minimize netbios broadcasts in your network is to have a WINS server or servers and manually set the winblows machines to WINS only mode so that it gets it's name lookups from the WINS server only and not from broadcast or hybrid mode. That's the simple version of it. Way too long a subject to talk about here as this is a Cisco study forum. I minimize all broadcasts by keeping my VLANs under 200 devices and route between VLANs. Assuming your NT server services and workstations are setup correctly, you shouldn't have a real big issue anyway. I run Appletalk on my network as well, and you're right, Netbios does a lot more bandwidth damage than Appletalk does. ;-) Scott > And who said AppleTalk was chatty? Hello, You Can't if you use dual entries like that, the DNS will round robin the request into 50-50% chance that a same name will resolve to A's and B's IP. However, You could use one box with win2k or linux or unix using alias feature. So in this case if you're using double dns entries, you'll get 1/2 probably success attempt if one of the link gone broke. Hi guys - I'm studying for the CCNP myself, and I bought all four McGraw Hill Technical Expert books (all supervised by Tom Thomas, author of the Cisco OSPF book) - and they stink. I'd wait for the Cisco or even the Syngress books if I were you. Case in point: in the BCMSN book, repeaters and hubs are referred to throughout as "Layer 2 devices." 'Nuff said. I could say "read the bok and find out", but I won't. There is nothing in there that will teach you about Token Ring switches, but (and a big but), it is truly exceptional book if you are prepared to learn about layer 2 issues. It is the kind of book which gives you answers but at the same time, if you need more, gets you digging deep into RFC's . Cisco Recertification
http://www.cisco.com/warp/partner/synchronicd/cc/serv/mkt/cert/career/rece_ds.htm (need partner access for this URL) Recertification Policy Cisco Career Certifications at the Associate and Professional levels (CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, CCDP certifications) are valid for three years. CCIE certifications and Cisco Specializations are valid for two years. Valid certifications may be renewed indefinitely or extended. Without timely renewal, individual career certifications expire or become inactive. Note: Extension occurs when a certificate holder advances to the next level. RecertificationHow To renew certifications, holders must register for-and pass-the appropriate Cisco recertification exams. Recertification exams are regularly offered worldwide. Valid certifications may be renewed indefinitely. For CCIE certificate holders, renewal requires passing a recertification test and attending specific sessions at Networkers conferences. For CCNA and CCDA recertifications, the exam is simply the current version of the appropriate exam. The Professional level has different recertification exams for CCNP and CCDP certifications. Questions for these exams are drawn from the several exams currently in use for each certification. Re: cisco documentation
Hi Computer Services, The answer to this and many other questions is in the archives. It's one of the best tools that we have! The Cisco Documentation CD works on Windows 2000. It's because the Verity search engine does not use or recognize the search path. - %ProgramFiles%, as you'll see in the registry. To get the Cisco documentation to work under Windows 2000: - Completely uninstall and remove all the related files from a failed installation of the documentation CD first! - Run regedit - Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/IE4/Setup/Path - Change the value from "%programfiles%\Internet Explorer" to the location where IE is installed on your system, for example "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer". - Install the Documentation CD HTH, Vern Stitt ASE, CCA, CCNA, MCSE ""computer services"" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message 000e01c0180e$60495000$b70b80cb@shamikh">news:000e01c0180e$60495000$b70b80cb@shamikh... Re: Help Requested-CCIE LAB
Hopefully I'll be able to answer some of your questions... 1. In the lab, you'll have one scenario. This will cover many topics, however. 2. You may see anything listed on the website. The topics you've listed may very well appear, as can many others. Percentages can vary from lab to lab. 3. Look on the website www.cisco.com; You'll find an equipment list - any or all of this equipment may appear. 4. I wouldn't think about machines - rather, interfaces and protocols. The equipment list will help here as well. 5. Advice? Hands-on experience, the more the better. For reference materials, Caslow's book is good, but I would supplement it with Internet routing Architectures and Jeff Doyle's book. Re: HDLC, SDLC...
Another thing to keep in mind is that Cisco does not use a standard HDLC header. That's why PPP is recommended for interoperability with non-Cisco devices. Cisco doesn't take advantage of any of the reliability features of standard HDLC, and Cisco added a field to the header to identify the next layer up, such as IP, DDP, DECnet, etc. Cisco's HDLC has been discussed many times on this list, so check the archives for more details. Re: netbios, whats it good for?
This has a good explanation of what NetBIOS is good for (and I use the term loosly): http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/idg4/nd2004.htm#xtocid263537 but here is the specific sentance that tells it all... "NetBIOS stations issue broadcasts for several reasons: to verify at startup that a station name is unique to the network, to find the route to a particular server, and to provide a heartbeat function to maintain connectivity between servers and requesters." You see alot of it on a Windows network. You CAN get rid of it but the functionality that NetBIOS provideds on Windows networks is then lost and you end up having lookup/accessibility problems. Re: Latest SW version for CAT5K
The "recommended" version of the software should be whatever meets you needs best. You have to take into account memory requirements, what you want it to do, bugs, and security holes. Its not as easy as saying "this is what you need" without bothering to check what your needs are. The one size fits all approach doesn't work too well. If you're short on memory but your needs are modest, an older version of the software might work better for you. On the other hand, if you want to implement everything under the sun, you might want to make sure you have enoiugh memory and get the latest release that has the features you need. Might be a good idea to stay a version number or two back from the latest releast though (such as 5.4 instead of 5.5). IPX and IP Mapping to VLAN's
Hi All! Currently, doing a design for a client where there are 2 server subnets, and about 4 user subnets; routing acheived with a NetBuilder (3Com). There are also 3 IPX networks (Novell Servers) which are being used - legacy file/print servers, all the user subnets need to be able to see the Novell Servers. The plan is to move over to an entirely switched LAN setup. The existing IP subnets, I'm mapping over to there own individual VLAN's, with a layer-3 card, in one of the Catalyst's providing routing between the VLAN's. My question really is, what about the IPX traffic? Does this need to be mapped to it's own VLAN, or can it "ride" the existing IP VLAN's? If IPX gets mapped to it's own VLAN, how do you assign a physical port to multiple VLAN's (ie., IP and IPX), inlight of the fact that some of the end devices have multiple protocol stacks configured? I've not been able to find much information relating to how IPX in particular, or for that matter any other protocol traffic (ie., AppleTalk), traverses a switched network??? Any help and/or pointers would be most welcome :-) Later... Re: Nobody able to help me ?
ifTable = 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2 Contains a number of OIDs you want to look at) ifNumber = 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.1 The number of interfaces/ports on the device - careful with this one, it includes the virtual interfaces as well as the physical ones Under ifTable (part of the standard RFC 1213 MIB - you probably already have it compiled) are a number of values that can be gathered per port/interface. You need to walk through them and determine which instances of each OID you want monitored. Getif is a good program for this or you can use a regular SNMP package like Castlerock's SNMPc. # = number of the instance you want monitored. Re: IOS Firewall Feature set vs PIX
I tend to use the Firewall feature set in places where I need serious router functionality in addition to basic firewalling. Keep in mind that a PIX can't do WAN modules, can't do BGP, and does not speak the same IOS we all know and love. Of course, in case cost does factor into your design, the IOS upgrade on a 7200VXR, costs the same as a PIX515 bundle. Re: HDLC, SDLC...
These are all Layer 2 protocols. This site has some very good explanations of the differences. http://www.sangoma.com/tutorial.htm LLC2 = IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control Type 2. Used by SNA and NetBIOS on a LAN. Frame Format: http://www.protocols.com/pbook/lan.htm#LLC LAPD = Access protocol on ISDN D channel. Ensures error free transmission. Frame Format: http://www.protocols.com/pbook/isdn.htm#LAPD HDLC = Sets the framing structure for synchronous communications and is responsible for the error-free movement of data between network nodes. There are two different implementations of HDLC, HDLC NRM (also known as SDLC) and HDLC LAPB. NRM is MAster/slave. LAPB is peer-to-peer. Frame Format: http://www.protocols.com/pbook/x25.htm#HDLC LAPB = CCITT adaptation of HDLC. Used to carry X.25 commands and control frames. Supports full-duplex operations and is peer-to-peer (neither end plays the role of master on a permanent basis). Frame Format: http://www.protocols.com/pbook/x25.htm#LAPB SDLC = Developed by IBM. Performes the layer 2 functions of the SNA hierarchy. SDLC is virtually identical to HDLC Normal Response Mode and was developed to replace the Bisynchronous protocol for WAN connections between IBM equipment. Primarily half-duplex but is capable of supporting full-duplex. Not a peer-to-peer protocol like HDLC/LAPB, X.25, and Frame-Relay. Frame Format: http://www.protocols.com/pbook/sna.htm#SDLC Nope this helps, Karen E Young Network Engineer ELF Technologies, Inc [EMAIL PROTECTED] perez claude-vincent To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: HDLC, SDLC... Re: Access Lists !!!
the difference would be if you were using standard or extended access lists. apply standard access lists at the destination router apply extended access lists at the source router so for your example to block access to lan B from lan A apply a standard access list to the in port of router B or apply an extended access list to the out port of router A so to further your example, forbid tcp access to router b from host 10.0.10.10 rd | ra--rc--rb ra = router a rb = router b rc = router c rd = router d using a standard access list to stop 10.0.10.10 traffic on ra will cause no access to rc or rd using an extended access list on rb to stop tcp traffic will still allow traffic to rc and rd > Raees Ahmed Shaikh wrote: > > Dear Buddies, > > The following situation is given as an example. > > Router A > LAN > A---E0-[X]-S0--LAN > B-- > > If I need to block LAN A access to LAN B, > > I can apply the access list to Router A's Ethernet E0 as in, > and if I apply to the E0 out the packet should come inside checked > against the out criteria and dependently dropped. > > I could apply the access list to Router A's Serial S0 as in, assuming > the E0 accepted the packet and is forwarding to S0, so it would be an > incoming packet for S0, would it work. > > I could apply the access list to Router A's Serial S0 as out, > assuming the SO accepted the packet and is applying the list before > forwarding to the the LAN B. > > I have not included another router just to simplify the matter. > > Actually I am really confused > > Some of the confused questions are as follows > > How and where should the acceslist placed and applied to the in/out of > the interfaces. > see above > Is the in/out concept with respect to the link/and or interface. > meaning to say if the access list is applied to an interface as in, > the packets coming from outside will be tested.
