RE: what is dark fiber?

2000-09-06 Thread Gabriel . Neagoe

Hello,

as far as I understood from the ISP's the "dark fiber" is the equivalent of
a leased line:
the ISP provides you the Physical connectivity between the endpoints, but
they do not provide any routing
This kind of commercial offer is mainly used by ISPs that use DWDM on their
fibers and they can offer one wavelength to you.

Hello Benny

the info on 2501 memory can be found here:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_fix/cis2500/2501/
2500ug/maint.htm

from my experience I can tell youthat you can put there usual computer 72
pin FPM simms (not EDO); if you have an old 486 in some dusty corner get the
memory and put it in the router

PIX security manager

2000-09-06 Thread zhencai

Dear friends,

I'm trying to load PIX security manger 1.1 on a NT4 (SP5) machine but it
asked for SP4. I tried to modify NT registry to make security manager think
it's dealing with SP4 but no success. Is there a work around? I hate to
reload everything.

Thanks a lot.

A couple of thoughts. Look at VLANs for what they are, namely
broadcast domains. There is not necessarily any need to put a
host on a separate VLAN just because it is running a different
routed protocol. Think in terms of total broadcasts for all
hosts on the VLAN as a percentage of total traffic. Use
guidelines spelled out in "Top Down Network Design," by
Priscilla Oppenheimer for rules of thumb for max number of
hosts on a VLAN (see page 103). That is a good starting
point. There is a larger issue however, and it deals with a
topic you have not mentioned. You are about to migrate to a
switched network and you have not mentioned anything about MLS,
or multilayer switching. MLS will provide the ability to route
at wire speed. Nowadays, the fastest routers are able to
perofrm at approximately 275k pps rate. With MLS properly
configured, you can increase that well beyond the 1Mpps rate.

Since the BCMSN course does not spend much time on IPX MLS, I
will attempt to cover a few of the basics. First, there are
only *two* MLS modes (unlike the three available in IP MLS).
They are destination mode and destination-source mode. If you
are not using any interior IPX access lists, you will run in
destination mode and performance will be very zippy. OTOH, if
you have IPX access lists, you will kick into destination-
source mode for your MLS flows. This has zero effect on
performance if you are using *outbound* IPX access lists. If
you used inbound IPX access lists, then every single packet
will be routed :-(

You will need MLS capable switches with the approrpriate
hardware (CAT5k and 6k et al with NFFC) and an internal
RSM/RSFC or an extrnal MLS capable router. The only other
restriction is that IPX accounting cannot work with MLS on, and
the transport control max value field must be set to a value
greater than 16 when using EIGRP for the routing protocol. Also
most of the fields in an IPX extended access list will likely
preclude the use of IPX MLS.

WIC-2A/S back-to-back cables?

Does anyone know what cables I need to connect these two routers

please provide the cables and layout needed to connect 3 routers with this
interface to have 2 end points and 1 switch?

Re: Win2k SNMP Traffic

2000-09-06 Thread Kevin Wigle

I don't understand a few things in your post.

First, I have had W2K Pro and Server in the lab and our findings are that
W2K Pro does NOT install SNMP by default but Server DOES. So the W2K Pro
machines should be ok. (like I said, that's our findings from doing the
installs ourselves, Dell is maybe doing their own idea of pre-config). This
was further shown to us as W2K of all stripes is forbidden from the network
until it is rolled out properly. People install W2K server not knowing that
SNMP is installed by default with the "public" community string. Our SNMP
management tools pick them up immediately and we catch them and shut them
down and they wonder how we found them so fast.

W2K Pro on the other hand is more difficult to find and we use non-SNMP
methods to find them.

Next, SNMP has nothing to do with Network Neighbourhood. On my last network
of over 12,000 devices, PCs show up in the 'Hood and they DON'T have SNMP
configured. Only the servers, printers and routers/switches have SNMP
enabled.

Network Neighbourhood has a lot to do with WINS and browsing.

So, what is probably happening is that W2K Pro machines are assuming the
Master Browser Role for their subnets as NT (W2K Pro) is higher on the
browser ladder than Win9x. Also, W2K Pro needs to be registered in the
Domain Computer database so automatically the browse tables know about more
computers than with Win9x.

So, I'm not sure how to "fix" your problem. Actually what you're seeing is
normal for a NT Workstation (W2K Pro). The only thing I can think of
quickly is to disable browser advertisements of the W2K Pro machines.

Also a lot of work unless it can be incorporated into a security policy
applied to all W2K Pro machines at login.

Offhand, I don't know of a way to target specific computer types in an IOS
ACL. Trapping SNMP would disable SNMP for all devices.

ISDN, Dialer Guru Question!

2000-09-06 Thread Andre Fecteau

I configured some routers for ISDN, but one of the spids is coming up invalid
can anyone tell me why?  I put the BRI configurations for both sides
as well as the error message that I'm getting.  Can someone help me
fix this problem?  By the way I called the service provider and they
said everything is OK regarding the ISDN lines and spids.  I can telnet
and other things, but I just can't get both channels to come up at the
same time.  And obviously at least from my limited knowledge base
the invalid spid has something to do with that!  I've been pulling
my hair out over this one for a few days!  I'd like a solution, but
all suggestions are more than welcome!!!
Both side have this:
isdn switch-type basic-ni
isdn voice-call-failure 0
isdn tei-negotiation first-call
One side
interface BRI1/1
 ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x
 ip nat inside
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer map ip y.y.y.y name y broadcast yyy(first #)
 dialer map ip y.y.y.y name y broadcast yyy(second #)
 dialer load-threshold 10 either
 dialer-group 1
 isdn switch-type basic-ni
 isdn spid1 xx xxx
 isdn spid2 xx xxx
 ppp authentication chap
 ppp multilink
!
Other side:
!
interface BRI1/0
 ip address y.y.y.y y.y.y.y
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer map ip x.x.x.x name x broadcast xxx(first #)
 dialer map ip x.x.x.x name x broadcast xxx(second #)
 dialer load-threshold 1 outbound
 dialer-group 1
 isdn switch-type basic-ni
 isdn spid1 yy yyy
 isdn spid2 yy yyy
 ppp authentication chap
 ppp multilink
!
This is the ISDN status :  The other side is the same except
both spids are valid!

PRI dial out

2000-09-06 Thread Jim Bond

Hello,

I have a 5200 router with 2 T1 PRI installed. Users
can dial in (using analog modem), but this router
won't dial out. Debug isdn q931 shows that there is
something wrong between my router and local teleco.
Local teleco said I have to change the type of call or
number plan (sounds pretty weird).

How do I do it in 5200?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Study Materials for CCNP 2.0 Track?

2000-09-06 Thread T. Miller

Agreed. In my experience of self-studying for MS, Novell, and Cisco certs,
I've found each company's official curriculum to be a better source of
information than any third party material I've tried...especially for
overall knowledge and not just getting a passing score on an exam.

Speaking of which, how many people have extended this time interval for
the sake of your wide-area links? We had decided to double the interval
to 120 sec (and double the flush-timer from 180 to 360 sec), for each IPX
RIPs and SAPs, and aren't any worse for it, from what I can tell.

there's NO possible way I can go, or tell the techy there to go to
disable SNMP traffic on all the new comps!!!I was thinking about
goin to all the branch offices and config. the routers to block snmp

Re: netbios, whats it good for?

2000-09-06 Thread Scott Nelson

I can tell you how to get rid of Netbios,
get rid of Windoze machines.

Netbios is encapsulated within IP
( assuming you are using IP on WinXX machines ), even if you don't have
Netbeui loaded. One of the best ways to minimize netbios broadcasts in your
network is to have a WINS server or servers and manually set the winblows
machines to WINS only mode so that it gets it's name lookups from the WINS
server only and not from broadcast or hybrid mode.

That's the simple version of it. Way too long a subject to talk about here
as this is a Cisco study forum.
I minimize all broadcasts by keeping my VLANs under 200 devices and route
between VLANs.
Assuming your NT server services and workstations are setup correctly, you
shouldn't have a real big issue anyway.

I run Appletalk on my network as well, and you're right, Netbios does a lot
more bandwidth damage than Appletalk does. ;-)

OSPF summarization metrics

2000-09-06 Thread Felice Russell

Helo Folks,
I have run into a bit of an oddity. In code 11.3 and 12.1 when you use ospf
address summarization the routes advertised have the best route metric. With
code 12.0 it has the worst path metric. Which is correct?
Several people I have spoken with said the 12.0 code is handeling the
metrics roperly but I fail to see the benefit of this. Any input would be
greatly appreciated.

It's called a smart serial cable. This is the only router Cisco used it

I have a new 805 that has me stumped. All other serial interfaces Ive
seen use a DB-60 connector but this one has one Ive not seen before in
fact its not DB-anything. Checked the online cisco docs and have seen
no mention of this connector before. Show interfaces does have a

Watch the wrap.

ipx update interval

Default

The default interval is 60 seconds for both IPX

Good luck.

RE: dns

2000-09-06 Thread Leonard Ong

Hello,

You Can't if you use dual entries like that,
the DNS will round robin the request into 50-50%
chance that a same name will resolve to A's and B's IP.

However, You could use one box with win2k or linux or unix
using alias feature.

So in this case if you're using double dns entries, you'll
get 1/2 probably success attempt if one of the link gone
broke.

Thanks

Hi,

I need a solution for the configuration below:

 Internet
 | |
 | |
 ISP A ISP B
 | |
 | |
   Customer
  |
   Web Server

Web Server will has 2 IP addresses, one will be given by ISP A and the other
one will be given by ISP B.
Primary DNS server is on ISP A and secondary DNS server is on ISP B.
The DNS server on ISP A has two records for customer's web server, for
example :
www a 10.0.0.1 (IP address given by ISP A)
www a 20.0.0.1 (IP address given by ISP B)
The goal is to use dual ISP for back-up purpose, so the web server will
serve for 24 hour / day.
Since the DNS server only load balance between two same host records, how
about if one link is broken ?
For example :
Link from ISP B to Customer is broken, meanwhile someone in Internet is
accessing the web server and the DNS server give him the IP address of
20.0.0.1, so the session will time out. He will has an access to web server
until the DNS server give him the IP address of 10.0.0.1 (because the DNS
server load balance these two records).
Are there any solutions to solve this problem, so the DNS server could
detect the unreachable IP address and after that it would give the correct
reachable IP address to the client ?

Thank you

Hi,

But the customer doesn't have their own registered IP addresses and there
are no peering agreement between ISP A and ISP B. I think it is a good idea
to move DNS inside the customer's network like Jay said before.

What you are proposing is not help, but a method of cheapening the
certification for those of us who have worked and studied hard to achieve
our goals. A person will find greater worth in something if they have to
work to attain it, instead of having it given to them. You cheapen the
certifications and anyone you "assist" in this manner (yourself included).
This list IS about helping others, not about helping each other to "cheat"

offensive to me, as his language was to you (FWIW, I do not approve of his

This message is for Mr. Frank Haun.

Our elders tell us to think before speaking but
probably that doesn't apply to idiots like you because
that would require grey matter inside your skull which
you don't have. It is very easy to make enemies but it
takes courage to make friends. I am quite sure you and
Muhammad or for that matter I don't know each other,
then where is this hatred coming from Mr. Frank Haun.
Do you feel so insecure about your skills that you are
afraid that helping others to pass CCNA or CCNP will
jeopardies your job. I subscribed to this mailing list
to help and be helped. But if someone out there needs
help, how does it matter if they get little feed back
from this forum. So for next time I hope you will use
what ever is left of your grey matter in the benefit
of others. I really respect those who post answers on
this forum knowing they will not get anything out of
it.

My CCDA Study Guide has conflicting statements concerning the update
frequency of IPX RIP. One place says 30 secs, same as IP RIP; another table

2000-09-06 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

Hi guys -

I'm studying for the CCNP myself, and I bought all four McGraw Hill
Technical Expert books (all supervised by Tom Thomas, author of the Cisco
OSPF book) - and they stink. I'd wait for the Cisco or even the Syngress
books if I were you. Case in point: in the BCMSN book, repeaters and hubs
are referred to throughout as "Layer 2 devices." 'Nuff said.

Hi Tracy,

I'm just starting to study for my CCNP as well. I believe--someone correct
me if I'm wrong on this--that all the books for the CCNP 2.0 are available
save for the BSCN (Building Scalable Cisco Networks) which corresponds to
the Routing 2.0 exam. I'm presently studying for the Switching 2.0 exam,
and the BCMSN (Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks) Cisco Press book
is available for that for certain. I believe the BCRAN and CIT books are
also available though. Best of luck.

I could say "read the bok and find out", but I won't.

There is nothing in there that will teach you about Token Ring switches, but
(and a big but), it is truly exceptional book if you are prepared to learn
about layer 2 issues. It is the kind of book which gives you answers but at
the same time, if you need more, gets you digging deep into RFC's . This is
probably the Best Seller at my company (a Cisco GP)

Well worth the 50 quid

Cisco Recertification

2000-09-06 Thread Thomas Trygar

http://www.cisco.com/warp/partner/synchronicd/cc/serv/mkt/cert/career/rece_ds.htm

(need partner access for this URL)

Recertification Policy

Cisco Career Certifications at the Associate and Professional levels
(CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, CCDP certifications) are valid for three years. CCIE
certifications
and Cisco Specializations are valid for two years. Valid certifications
may be renewed indefinitely or extended. Without timely renewal,
individual career
certifications expire or become inactive. Note: Extension occurs when a
certificate holder advances to the next level.

Recertification—How

To renew certifications, holders must register for-and pass-the
appropriate Cisco recertification exams. Recertification exams are
regularly offered worldwide. Valid
certifications may be renewed indefinitely. For CCIE certificate
holders, renewal requires passing a recertification test and attending
specific sessions at Networkers
conferences.

For CCNA and CCDA recertifications, the exam is simply the current
version of the appropriate exam.

The Professional level has different recertification exams for CCNP
and CCDP certifications. Questions for these exams are drawn from the
several exams
currently in use for each certification.

For Specializations, the recertification exam is simply the current
version of the appropriate exam. (Network Management has two exams.)

Re: Portfast ???

2000-09-06 Thread whatshakin

I see no reason you cannot bring up both switches at the same time. Once the
2924C has been up for a minute or so you can start pulling the patch cables
from the old switch and start putting them in the new one. Your switch over
time will be essentially painless as long as the new switch is configured
correctly.

This is on a UK/Europe switch so this is the correct router.

Try "ppp auth pap callin" to avoid trying to authenticate your far end

change the ip route statement to:

Re: cisco documentation

2000-09-06 Thread Vern Stitt

Hi Computer Services,

The answer to this and many other questions is in the archives. It's one of
the best tools that we have!

The Cisco Documentation CD works on Windows 2000. It's because the Verity
search engine does not use or recognize the search path. - %ProgramFiles%,
as you'll see in the registry.

To get the Cisco documentation to work under Windows 2000:

- Completely uninstall and remove all the related files from a failed
installation of the documentation CD first!

- Run regedit

- Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/IE4/Setup/Path

- Change the value from "%programfiles%\Internet Explorer" to the location
where IE is installed on your system, for example "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer".

- Install the Documentation CD

Re: Help Requested-CCIE LAB

2000-09-06 Thread csmacd

Hopefully I'll be able to answer some of your questions...

1. In the lab, you'll have one scenario. This will cover many topics,
however.
2. You may see anything listed on the website. The topics you've listed
may very well appear, as can many others. Percentages can vary from lab to
lab.
3. Look on the website www.cisco.com; You'll find an equipment list - any
or all of this equipment may appear.
4. I wouldn't think about machines - rather, interfaces and protocols. The
equipment list will help here as well.
5. Advice? Hands-on experience, the more the better. For reference
materials, Caslow's book is good, but I would supplement it with Internet
routing Architectures and Jeff Doyle's book. Know backwards and Forwards
everything on the blueprint

Dear CCIE and CCIE Aspiring Friends

I trust that this find you doing well. Friends I would request for your kind
help on following info/input regarding CCIE LAB exam.

1. How many total Lab Scenarios would be given?
2. Will Lab have scenarios on SNA/DLSW/ATM & ATM LANE/Appletalk/DECnet or
not. If there then what would be there percentage(out of total).
3.What would be major areas and what model of equipment(Cisco Boxex) would
be there(site do indicate but would appreciate your personal experience) ?
4. In a worts/complex Lab scenario, how many Routers/Switches could be
possible.
4. Any specific advice or reference material for the LAB.

I would highly appreciate for your kind support.

Thanks & Regards

Re: HDLC, SDLC...

2000-09-06 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

Another thing to keep in mind is that Cisco does not use a standard HDLC
header. That's why PPP is recommended for interoperability with non-Cisco
devices. Cisco doesn't take advantage of any of the reliability features of
standard HDLC, and Cisco added a field to the header to identify the next
layer up, such as IP, DDP, DECnet, etc.

Cisco's HDLC has been discussed many times on this list, so check the
archives for more details.

Re: netbios, whats it good for?

2000-09-06 Thread Karen . Young

This has a good explanation of what NetBIOS is good for (and I use the term
loosly):
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/idg4/nd2004.htm#xtocid263537

but here is the specific sentance that tells it all... "NetBIOS stations
issue broadcasts for several reasons: to verify at startup that a station
name is unique to the network, to find the route to a particular server,
and to provide a heartbeat function to maintain connectivity between
servers and requesters."

You see alot of it on a Windows network. You CAN get rid of it but the
functionality that NetBIOS provideds on Windows networks is then lost and
you end up having lookup/accessibility problems.

Re: Latest SW version for CAT5K

2000-09-06 Thread Karen . Young

The "recommended" version of the software should be whatever meets you
needs best. You have to take into account memory requirements, what you
want it to do, bugs, and security holes. Its not as easy as saying "this is
what you need" without bothering to check what your needs are. The one size
fits all approach doesn't work too well.

If you're short on memory but your needs are modest, an older version of
the software might work better for you. On the other hand, if you want to
implement everything under the sun, you might want to make sure you have
enoiugh memory and get the latest release that has the features you need.
Might be a good idea to stay a version number or two back from the latest
releast though (such as 5.4 instead of 5.5).

IPX and IP Mapping to VLAN's

2000-09-06 Thread ciscolab

Hi All!

Currently, doing a design for a client where there are 2 server subnets, and
about 4 user subnets; routing acheived with a NetBuilder (3Com).
There are also 3 IPX networks (Novell Servers) which are being used - legacy
file/print servers, all the user subnets need to be able to see the Novell
Servers.

The plan is to move over to an entirely switched LAN setup.
The existing IP subnets, I'm mapping over to there own individual VLAN's,
with a layer-3 card, in one of the Catalyst's providing routing between the
VLAN's.

My question really is, what about the IPX traffic? Does this need to be
mapped to it's own VLAN, or can it "ride" the existing IP VLAN's?
If IPX gets mapped to it's own VLAN, how do you assign a physical port to
multiple VLAN's (ie., IP and IPX), inlight of the fact that some of the end
devices have multiple protocol stacks configured?

I've not been able to find much information relating to how IPX in
particular, or for that matter any other protocol traffic (ie., AppleTalk),
traverses a switched network???

Any help and/or pointers would be most welcome :-)

Later...

Re: IOS Firewall Feature set vs PIX

I tend to use the Firewall feature set in places where I need serious router
functionality in addition to basic firewalling. Keep in mind that a PIX can't
do WAN modules, can't do BGP, and does not speak the same IOS we all know and
love.

Of course, in case cost does factor into your design, the IOS upgrade on a
7200VXR, costs the same as a PIX515 bundle.

These are all Layer 2 protocols. This site has some very good explanations
of the differences.
 http://www.sangoma.com/tutorial.htm

LLC2 = IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control Type 2. Used by SNA and NetBIOS on a
LAN.
 Frame Format: http://www.protocols.com/pbook/lan.htm#LLC

LAPD = Access protocol on ISDN D channel. Ensures error free transmission.
 Frame Format: http://www.protocols.com/pbook/isdn.htm#LAPD

HDLC = Sets the framing structure for synchronous communications and is
responsible for the error-free movement of data between network nodes.
There are two different implementations of HDLC, HDLC NRM (also known as
SDLC) and HDLC LAPB. NRM is MAster/slave. LAPB is peer-to-peer.
 Frame Format: http://www.protocols.com/pbook/x25.htm#HDLC

LAPB = CCITT adaptation of HDLC. Used to carry X.25 commands and control
frames. Supports full-duplex operations and is peer-to-peer (neither end
plays the role of master on a permanent basis).
 Frame Format: http://www.protocols.com/pbook/x25.htm#LAPB

SDLC = Developed by IBM. Performes the layer 2 functions of the SNA
hierarchy. SDLC is virtually identical to HDLC Normal Response Mode and was
developed to replace the Bisynchronous protocol for WAN connections between
IBM equipment. Primarily half-duplex but is capable of supporting
full-duplex. Not a peer-to-peer protocol like HDLC/LAPB, X.25, and
Frame-Relay.

Dear all,

I am a little bit confused about the difference of
framing between hdlc, sdlc, lapb, lapd, llc2.

Can someone help me?

Thank you, cvp.

Re: Access Lists !!!

2000-09-06 Thread David Ristau

the difference would be if you were using standard or extended access
lists.

apply standard access lists at the destination router
apply extended access lists at the source router

so for your example to block access to lan B from lan A

apply a standard access list to the in port of router B
or
apply an extended access list to the out port of router A

so to further your example, forbid tcp access to router b from host
10.0.10.10

rd
 |
ra--rc--rb

ra = router a
rb = router b
rc = router c
rd =  router d

using a standard access list to stop 10.0.10.10 traffic on ra will cause
no access to rc or rd
using an extended access list on rb to stop tcp traffic will still allow
traffic to rc and rd

any other internal interfaces on the router should be on a different
network.

if the data is destined for the network the router interface is on it's
in
if the data is destined for a network other then the one the router
interface is on it's out
