Deeper TFTP...

2000-12-10 Thread Frank Wells

Can you copy files to a router acting as a TFTP server other than IOS image
files? Say, startup configs for example. If so, please share the commands.

Also, what does the command tftp-server rom alias mean?

Cheers

hey Peter. how long were you asleep?

it's just a little jibe resulting from a "simple" thread that went all over

I had intended on asking if the cables could support at least 1024 macs (to

Re: BGP Local Pref and MED/Metric - Route Maps Inbound/Outbound

Just wanted to commend Brian on an excellent explanation.

Whenever you start studying BGP (and advanced interior routing), and
things start getting confused, it's a good idea always to stop and
think:

am I dealing with TRAFFIC flow or ROUTING UPDATE flow?

I passed the CIT exam with no problems, and used the Cisco Press Book and
the one by Tom Thomas from McGraw Hill. I also purchased all of the Boson

Re: TFTP

2000-12-10 Thread Kevin Wigle

Ok, I got a 4500 and 4700 sitting here.

I gave the commands as listed and I got the same warning/error.

However, I noticed that in the running-config that the command was there.

I then tried to tftp from one to the other and it worked.

Re: CCIE Lab Preparation - Part 2

2000-12-10 Thread Doug Hammond

I know that story. Since I've been three times, without success, my company
has decided not to pay for any more trips. Good planning on their part,
after living and breathing the CCIE for the last year, I'm not going to drop
it. I have to admit it is a highly motivating factor in wanting to pass.
Somehow, I don't think what I have in mind is what they have in mind though

Passed BSCN

2000-12-10 Thread Shaheed, Manzur

Today I passed the BSCN (Routing 2.0) exam with a score of 896. This was the
last exam for me to become a CCNP.

Lots of question about configuring OSPF and EIGRP. Not much BGP as I was
expecting.
I studied Cisco Press BSCN book by Catherine Paquet and Diane Teare (ISBN

Re: Switching Black Book by Sean Odom and Hanson Nottingham

2000-12-10 Thread Doug Hammond

I have to agree Priscilla, I personally have never met Carl Hagan, but he
was very cordial when my Switching book came out earlier this year. He liked
the way the book was written and provided some really welcome feedback for
me. One of my greatest fears when the book was written was that it was going
to lay a brick and be the object of scorn. Comments from people like Carl
really helped to drive those thoughts away.

BTW - Carl, I was not involved as an author on this book - although I did
provide material for some sections of it. At the risk of someone (from an
anonymous e-mail account) publicly berating me, I have looked at Sean's and
Hanson's book and it looks like a quality book with a lot of value for net
nuts like me. Maybe we could move the group's focus to the technical merits
of it.

As an aside, writing a book and working full-time is not a task for the
squeamish. I have been to the CCIE lab (close - no cigar) and I have
authored a book. I would much rather study for the lab than write another
book. Does that tell you something?

Thanks Chuck. I'm sitting in a Days Inn in San Jose right now, waiting to
take my lab on December 13th. Unfortunately, I've made this journey alone,

I can't see any reason to apply a cynical explanation for someone's
admiration for an author's work. The admiration and good reviews may very
well not be based on friendship, as Stupid Idiot is assuming. They may be
based on professional respect. Even if they are friends, maybe they are
friends because they admire each other's intelligence and communication
skills.

OT: FS IOS 12 for 2500 IP only

2000-12-10 Thread John Hardman

Hi All

Sorry for the OT traffic, but I would like to get rid of a couple of extra
copies of IOS 12.0 IP only, for 2500 series routers. I know you can get them
on Ebay, but frankly the starting bids on those are higher than you can buy
it off the net for. So...

Here's the deal I have two copies, shipping is USD$3.20 for USPS priority
mail. I am asking $10 each.

TIA

What a blatant plug. According to his book Sean was a

heard from Sean Odom he loudly defending Todd Lammle's
latest crappy book. Sean Odom turned that into a full

Did you bother checking before you have that answer?

You can configure the network server to act as a limited Trivial File
Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server from which other Cisco servers can boot
their software. As a TFTP server host, the network server responds to TFTP
read request messages by sending a copy of its ROM software to the
requesting host. The TFTP read request message must use the file name that
you specified in the network server configuration.

To specify TFTP server operation for a communications server, use the
tftp-server system global configuration command. The full syntax follows.

tftp-server system filename list
no tftp-server system filename list
This command has two arguments: filename and list. The argument filename
is the name you give the communications server ROM file, and the argument
list is an IP access-list number.

The system sends a copy of the ROM software to any host which issues a
TFTP read request with this file name. To learn how to specify an access
list, see the "Configuring IP Access Lists" section in the chapter
"Routing IP."

You can specify multiple file names by repeating the tftp-server system
command. To remove a previously defined file name, use the no tftp-server
system command and append the appropriate file name and an access-list
number.

Images that run from ROM, including IGS images, cannot be loaded over the
network. Therefore, it does not make sense to use TFTP to offer the ROMs
on these images.

Example:
This command causes the router to send, via TFTP, a copy of the ROM
software when it receives a TFTP read request for the file configfile. The
requesting host is checked against access list 22.

tftp-server system configfile 22

Switching Black Book by Sean Odom and Hanson Nottingham

2000-12-10 Thread Stupid Idiot

Holy crap Robin, that has to be the most blatant plug,
from a friend of an author, that I've ever seen! It's
morons like you that make Amazon reviews worthless.

How much did the authors have to pay you for you to
litter this list with your "stunning" review?

CCNP

2000-12-10 Thread leonz

After taken four exams in one month time, I've got my CCNP today.
personally I don't find it too hard at all. Intense, but not hard.
For all the four exams, I got 890-900, which is kinda ok considering I
was rocketing through these exams in one month :)

I'll start doing CCNP security next, hopefully I'll pass it before the Xmas.
And then, if I'm lucky, I can get my CCDP in year 2000..:P

Keep one of the 2621's and sell the rest. From the proceeds you could buy
5-6 2500 series routers and assemble a decent lab.

Re: Switching Black Book by Sean Odom and Hanson Nottingham

2000-12-10 Thread Andy Walden

Stupid,

I appreciate you reply. It caused me to take a closer look into your
comments and I came across this from Carl Hagan in May2000.

"Obviously, you have never met Sean Odom or heard him speak. He is
probably one of the most knowledgable Cisco consultants ever to grace our
presence. You know why he doesn't keep up with this group? Because
everyone has comments like this. It keeps the people who this group could
use the most from keeping up with the list. If we all paid more attention
to the technical problems we have and the learning we need, we would have
people like Sean Odom and Todd Lammle keeping up with the group. Who has
time for the Soap Opera that this group list is providing?"

It does sound like this Carl guy has an unnatural fascination with this
Sean guy.

Just fueling the fire...

Their is no set pass mark anymore. When you begin your test, a pass mark
is downloaded based on the pass marks of the previous 3 or 4 months. Sort
of like a "curve" if you will. Its "generally" around 70-75% however.

2610's aren't worth that much. I would keep it and use it for the other
half of "voice", if you are interested in that. A 2610 bare would get
about $700.with some interfaces you could get up as high as $1200.

Hi,

I have a copy of the Catherine Paquet book beside me. We here work in the field of

Re: MZMaker utility

2000-12-10 Thread Paul Lalonde

Hi Sam,

Images for the 800, 1000, 1600, 2600, 3600 ... are already compressed to run
from DRAM. You can't use the MZMAKER utility on these images.

MZMAKER was written specifically for the many 3000- and 2500-series systems
in use by our groupstudy peers. The 3000- and 2500-series routers don't have
"compressed from the factory" images like these newer routers do.

RE: last try: tough VPN question

2000-12-10 Thread Scott Morris

An interesting idea here... And bear in mind I haven't tried using my PIX
as a DHCP server yet...

BUT You only have a maximum of 10 IPs you can use for a DHCP pool. You
are assigning them to the same netmask as your inside interface (I assume
this, the docs don't say anything one way or the other, just stating the IPs
must be in the "same subnet" as the inside interface)...

So:

#1, check the ipconfig of your workstations, make sure the netmask is /24 as
your inside interface...

#2, you are offering specific translation for 10.1.1.255, which is where the
Windows stations are going to attempt to do local broadcast stuff to.
Therefore, those packets will never leave your network.

On a router (like the 3620) you can do an ip helper address. I would be
interested in what your 3620 config looks like. I don't believe that PAT
translating the broadcasts is supported (though I could be wrong on that).

Have you tried the LMHOSTS approach?

Scott

Hello,

Let me re-describe the situation:

Central office 7100 router, site office PIX (NAT
overload 1 public ip address), IPSec tunnel is
establised, clients at site office can't logon NT
domain but can do everthing else.

Today, I replaced the PIX with a 3620 router (same
IPSec setup), everything works fine. Clients can logon
NT domain.

I think that proves 1)I don't have naming issue 2) PAT
works with IPSec. I don't understand why PIX wouldn't
work. Please see my PIX config.

Thanks in advance.

Re: TFTP

2000-12-10 Thread Andy Walden

RE: ISDN Switch Type basic-net3 - Question- Chuck or Priscilla any input?

2000-12-10 Thread jenny . mcleod

Interesting.
When I set up a router using basic-net3, a colleague warned me that it
would not show active until a call was placed - he didn't know why but that
was what he had experienced. When I set up the router, though, the
physical layer DID show active without a call.
If the behaviour depends on the exact switch used in the exchange, that
would explain why it differs sometimes.

The routers in question were 7206s located in Paris. I saw more of this
exact behavior on some other routers in Europe, but can't remember which
ones. Here is the relevant portion of the config for the router in
question.
I don't have a good explanation for this behavior, but when I asked, I was
told that it occurred because they were not using a true basic-net3 switch,
they were using some sort of emulation instead.

I sat the CID Beta yesterday, or rather that is what I booked for, that
is what it said at the end
but the heading throughout the paper itself was 'Cisco Secure VPN' and
the questions were
certainly more akin to VPN security than Design.

Has anyone else had a similar experience / problem?

Keep one of the 2621's and sell the rest. From the proceeds you could buy

Dear All,
Thanks for your appreciation, i really need it. Well, i used Cisco Press

Moreover i used Cisco Online exams which really test your concepts. This was
all which i used. I had hands on experience with me which really helped me
out there in exam as i had worked on Catalyst 5000, Catalyst 6000. The
passing score is 699.

I cant tell the exact questions as it would be against the NDS rules and

RE: ccna test 507

2000-12-10 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

Sybex has a "CCNA Virtual Test Center" due out in January that has a fairly
in-depth section of questions that cover frame-relay and switching. All
questions are based on fundamental knowledge required to pass the CCNA. The
benefit though of these questions is in the explanations that have been
designed (in most instances) to help fill in the gaps of knowledge left out
of the Cisco official curriculum materials (ICND and Cisco Academy).

Jennifer

The Cisco Academy curriculum stays true to the certification, but you are
right about needing more information. Switching and Frame Relay are
weaknesses in the curriculum. Diagnostics of STP and setting up a router as
a TFTP server are two that come to mind. You should have TCP/IP and
subnetting down solid as well as Novell and IPX. I also had a couple of
questions on PPP.

Good Luck on Monday

2 Cisco 2621 routers
1 Cisco 2610 router
1 Local Director 416

There are no serial links on the 2600's that I am going to use, just
Ethernet. Can someone suggest a good place to begin? Thanks for your help.

MZMaker utility

2000-12-10 Thread Sam

Hello friends
Could anyone who has used the MZMaker utility to compress IOS images =
tell me if I can use it to compress images for a 1600 router.
I have done it on a 2500 and it works great.
My 1600 has 4MB Ram and 6MB Flash and am not able to load large images. =
This is for a home lab so I am not too concerned about slow booting or =
response.

Thanks

Re: TFTP

2000-12-10 Thread Frank Wells

Go to privilidged exec (router#) and type tftp-server /filename (need the
slash). The filename is the exact name of the IOS image you want to copy or
the alias name you gave it. Then you just tftp from the receiving box like
you always do.

Re: TFTP

2000-12-10 Thread Erick B.

tftp-server flash:filename

This will make the file's available to be TFTP'd off
this Cisco router from another device. IOS doesn't
allow a way to just TFTP any file to the flash from
remote that I know of. You need to use the copy tftp
command from the CLI to put files on the flash. This
is for security reasons - so someone can't just TFTP
files to your flash and fill it up.

As far as I know, this is supported on a majority of
the routers and all current models.

I have installed the CSPM and got it to talk with the sensor but I am still

RE: CCNA - Fears and Realities

2000-12-10 Thread Jennifer Cribbs

I believe my feelings of incompeteness or fear or nervousness stem from the
fact that I am a housewife and have absolutely NO experience in the tech
world. My past jobs were just general working jobs that required no
education. I don't work at this time. I study and go to school and my husband
takes care of me. And it is awsome to be able to understand some of these
things. I have no idea where this will go for me. At the time when this
started, I was going to go back to school and take a few classes with my
husband for "growth purposes" and the school I was attending got the okay to
start cisco classes. I had no computer experience. I had never touched one
except to maybe play a video game at an arcade... I had never heard of cisco
and I went to a seminar which was held to explain the courses and what they
would consist of. I didn't really understand what I was getting into, but I
signed on because it sounded interesting...and then, I was hooked. I took 98,
nt and a hardware class plus the first semester of cisco, which spurred me on
to go buy a bunch of parts last year as an experiment and build the first
computer that my husband and I have ever owned and actually am typing this on.
It took me 2 days to build. It shocked me at how easy it was and that it
actually worked! My husband eventually dropped the classes, but I was hooked
so to speak. I am buying the sybex ccnp books and can't wait to try things in
the real world. Passing this test is a goal of mine.

You guys might be used to this stuff and so are maybe indifferent to what you
actually know and understand. This is thrilling stuff to me. And it nearly
makes me feel priviledged to be able to learn. So many people cannot...

I thank you for the helpful msgs, but now I must study for tomorrow. And
after checking, I was wrong on my averages. sem1 90, sem2 91, sem 3 95, and
sem 4 92, but not quite finished with that one yet. Final to go on Tuesday.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Cribbs

MLS and VLAN success!

2000-12-10 Thread Ben Hockenhull

Hi all,

I finally managed to conquer MLS and VLANs, and I wanted to thank everyone
for their help.

I ended up completely nuking the config on the Cat and started over.
The new config worked from the very beginning. I suppose that there was
something lurking in the old config on the Cat that was screwing things
up.

Turns out that MLS is dead easy to configure when things work as
documented. Imagine.

Thanks again!

Tough Test - CSE

2000-12-10 Thread Perry Lucas

My company is preparing to become a Cisco Premier Partner and one of the
requirements is to have people with the Cisco Sales Esstentials (CSE)
certification. The test is taken online via the Certification.net's site,
and is 50 questions & multiple choice with a passing score of 76%. It
sounds and looks extremely easy, but it is probably one of the toughest
cisco tests I have taken. The first time I took it I got a 58% and just
last night took it again to achieve a 78%.

Here's a quick breakdown of some topics
-IBM
-Multiservice
-Switching (Token Ring & Ethernet)
-Differences between similar products
-Acronyms - Lots of Acronyms

I'm going back to the easier CCNx & CCDx tests now...

First you must have enough FLASH memory to host multiple IOS images, or
you'll only be able to serve the image you are running on that particular
router.

#conf t
TFTP-Server FLASH

There is some goof with partitions & VIP's (depending on the router), but
this is the core command...

RE: Still doesn't work: tough VPN question

2000-12-10 Thread Justin Menga

Hi,

Are you using NAT anywhere in the setup - NAT breaks some NetBIOS stuff,
particularly domain logons and NT trusts.

NAT meaning are you referencing the DC by a false IP address, or by it's
valid address.

If you are not using NAT, then forget about the IPSec, just think of it as a
router to router link. You will be attempting to talk to the DC using
internal addressing, so really all that is required on the remote end is
that the WINS server entries are configured correctly OR a manual LMHOSTS
entry.

Hello,

Thank you guys for the help. Unfortunately, I tried to
put LMHOST file, still doesn't work. We use WINS and I
can ping domain controller using name so I don't think
it's naming issue.

I used a sniffer captured some data, client is sending
logon request to domain controller but didn't get any
response. Looks like PIX blocks it. How do I open
it(port 137, 138, 139)?

Thanks in advance.

Think of it as a hundred bucks, nothing else. Are you 'scared to death' of
losing $100.00?...probably not. :-)

RE: rip over e0

2000-12-10 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Yes it can. Assuming appropriate crossover cable and addressing of the link.

Idle curiosity. Recognizing that RIP updates will be sent out any interface
whose address has been entered into the RIP networking process, what would
lead you to believe it would not work as expected?

Experiment - set it up this way. Do a debug ip rip events, and watch the fun

Does anyone know if rip can be run between two 2500 ethernet connections?

Re: rip over e0

2000-12-10 Thread John Neiberger

Yes it can. Was there something that made you think it could not? As far
as I know, if the interface can run IP, it can run RIP.

FDDI NIF

2000-12-10 Thread Darren Ward

Hi All,

A question on FDDI Neighborhood Information Frame that are used for discovering
Upstream
and Downstream Neighbors.

Does the station transmit this on both the Primary and Standby Rings so it goes in each
directions as I think or does it require interaction from receiving NSA's and some
kinda
magic happens on large rings?
