RE: NAT

2001-04-09 Thread Ali nder Ergn (Ko.Net)

You can see why there is a problem because any similar addresses within
the 10.1.1.x range on both networks, will mean that the router has no
idea where to send the traffic.

Actually the router will send the traffic according to the longest prefix
match rule, in this case 192.168.10.49

Subject: NAT

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a NAT issue I am
dealing with. I have a Cisco 3362 router which is used for ISDN
connectivity. I have several client networks that I connect to and now
have two clients with similar address ranges. Client A uses a
10.1.1.0/24 network and a new client B uses a 10.0.0.0/8 addressing
scheme with several subnets. The routes are as follows:

ip route 10.1.1.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.10.49 (for Client A)
ip route 10.1.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.10.130 (Client B)

You can see why there is a problem because any similar addresses within
the 10.1.1.x range on both networks, will mean that the router has no
idea where to send the traffic.

The dialer interface on my end has an address of 192.168.10.1 and the
BRI interface on the remote router is 192.168.10.130. I have full
access and control to the router I am dialing in to so making changes is
quite easy. I am thinking about using Network Address Translation on
the remote router somehow.

Any suggestions?

Charles.

Re: IP Classless

2001-04-09 Thread EA Louie

no ip classless means route IP over classful boundaries - you'll have to do
your homework to learn the Class A, Class B, and Class C network prefixes
though, mate ;-) However, 10.0.0.0 is a private (RFC 1918),
non-Internet-routeable Class A network

the route statement means that the route to network 10.0.0.0 is through IP
address 10.10.32.0 (which is kind of weird, because 10.10.32.0 is network
address if the 10.0.0.0 network is masked with 255.0.0.0, but with some
other subnet masks it would be a network rather than host address) This is
a classful static route, which is consistent with the no ip classless
command.

Subject: Cisco IOS Documentation: How useful is it, really?

I'm interested in thoughts and opinions on the practical utility of
the
official Cisco IOS Configuration Guides and Command References
available
  in
print, on CCO, and on the documentation CD-ROMs that ship with Cisco
products. There have been a number of allusions on and off this list
to
  the
importance (or even necessity) of studying the official docs if
"you're
serious about CCIE preparation." I even recall seeing some advice
given
  by
someone that one should read the entire set of configuration guides
and
command references before attempting the lab exam.

First off, the "practical utility" for the IOS Config guides is in the
configuration of the devices (duh), and not for light reading unless you
have a photographic memory (which actually might be a detriment ;-)

If you've ever put together a configuration for multiple routers (for
example, even a small 5 site WAN), you discover that the parameters set
on
one device are dependent on its neighbors, and that if you don't get the
commands right, the results that you want will not be realized.
Sometimes
it can be easy (point-to-point T1's and RIP all using fixed subnet
masks),
but the complexity rises as the routing protocol is implemented and
 features
required are added, and WAN technologies used.

How useful do you all find the IOS documentation, both with respect to
  CCIE
   study, and in general?

VERY. You go to http://www.cisco.com and click on Training and
Certifications. From there, there are links that take you to the CCIE
Blueprint, which lists a plethora (ad nauseum) of the material that you
 need
to be familiar with, and it is NOT all Cisco documentation. But there
are
lots of links to Cisco IOS Documentation there, and some good white
 papers,
  too.

Have you succeeded in using it to learn to configure services you were
previously unfamiliar with, or is it just useful as a reference once
you
already mainly know what you're doing? Is it even useful as a
 reference?

Yes - ergo ATM (LANE) and LECS/LES/BUS configuration at a router and ATM
switch level (two different devices, two different IOSes). Also, the
interface buffers (queuing commands), and it has really helped me in my
 BGP
configurations and in route redistribution. Again, if you haven't had
experience on the console, its almost impossible to study the
 configuration
guides except to get familiar with how these device commands are
entered.

Many times, the configuration examples at the bottom of the Config
Guides
are good starting points, but don't provide sufficient detail to solve
my
particular problem. Knowing the context of a router (one big ARP table)
helps alot, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of the router
in
terms of filtering and traffic movement also help. Interface-specific
commands versus global commands also proves to be valuable, because it
 gives
me a reference point to search the documentation.

   My own thoughts:

I ask because I find the IOS documentation hard to digest at best, and
actively confusing at worst. I use it frequently, but almost
 exclusively
  as
a reference to look up command options and syntax details. Even then,
  half
the time I find that there either isn't enough detail in the manual to
answer the question I have, or there's so much detail that the
 information
I'm looking for is buried in an avalanche of optional parameters and
unrelated features. The idea of resorting to the IOS documentation
to,
  say,
learn how to set up async and ISDN interfaces using a combination of
  static
and dynamic addressing to support user dialin and backup/DDR functions
 on
  an
access server makes my blood run cold. It could be done -

2001-04-09 Thread Stephen Skinner

OK

lots of questions.

lets start at the beginning.

Nice switch for a lab (O`lucky man)

the managemnet info ..how do we get it
well you can plug in a PC and telnet to it but you need a ip address
the easyiest way is to get a console cable from cisco ...(they come in handy
for other things too)
port 25 is just another port no different from other (i mean that you still
need ip address to telnet)
if you cant get a console cable do this

go to www.nai.com
download a copy of netxray or sniffer pro
plug into any port on your switch a straight thru cable
start capturing cdp data and you SHOULD see the ip address in that frame.
THIS CANNOT BE GUARNTEED
simply because it may just have a base setting (i.e no manangement tlenet
disabled)but it`s a quick easy way to start..

HTH

steve
OHH and you use telnet over ethernet/wan links and hyperterminal or
terraterm pro or whatever for consoling in (mainly...list) this is how i
split the two programs.

For study purposes, I've given a Catalyst 2800, with a couple more to
follow.
The problem is, no one has any idea of the configuration.
I don't have a serial cable, though can order one if need be. Can I
interface on port 25 for management purposes? Straight or cross-over
cable? And where am I to go from there? Do I get a sniffer so I can
discover the IP and then telnet or hyperterminal in?
Would like to experiment with VLANs but have to get the door open.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: what's the RSM utilization and what slow down network?

2001-04-09 Thread Stephen Skinner

first thing to do is check to see what is going on ..

go onto the rsm and do a show interfacethis sholud list all VIRTUAL
interface`s and see what is the amount of "Packets per second" going through
interface.

also check "5 mins traffic"...

you can download from "www.solarwinds.com" there package`s...in eval

go for the professioinal edition ...it has a tool called CPU load ...this
will give you an OVERALL picture of your RSM (aslong as you have assigned it
an IP address)...in real time...
also has "bandwidth Monitor" ..which can monitor VIRTUAL and REAL
interfaces...(again need ip address)

in order to fix this we need to know were all the traffic is

FIRST good thing to do is move ALL workstations of VLAN 1 ...this is a
managment VLAN and only switch/routers should use this ...
ALSO your trunks are they fibre or are they 100 megare your workstations
100meg ...if so to increase speed .ETHERCHANNELL 3 or 4 TP ports for
3-400 meg throughput.

this is a good start try this and report back to the list ...and we will
go from there...

On a 2500, you will have to boot from TFTP or some other method. After you

then do a "partition flash 1 16". Then you should be able to TFTP the new

RE: MLPPP T1 aggregation

You can multilink several T1 lines using MLPPP, but I don't think you can
split their destinations, simply because the multilink'd lines use a single
IP Address.

Subject: MLPPP T1 aggregation

Everyone:

I have 7206 router with PA-MC-2T3+ card in it. This
card support 28 T1 lines. I want to know if I can use
MLPPP (multilink point to point protocol) to aggregate
multiple T1s to same router at remote end. I plan to
use 1750 or 2611 at the remote end. Want to have a
bigger pipe going to remote office say about 3 mb or 6
mb. Is there any other way of doing this other than
MLPPP.
If I can use MLPPP, I was also curious about
physical connection. can I use say about 3 T1 lines
going to two different routers ( 2 lines to 2611 and 1
to 1750) as a part of same MLPPP link, or do they have
to be on same router with multiple interfaces?

If anybody can share this knowledge it will be of
great help.

Thanks in advance.
pat.

Re: NAT

2001-04-09 Thread Charles Dowling

Moe,

Thanks for the advice. I understand what you are saying with routing first and NATing
second. WHat I have done is to create a route on the source router of ip route
10.100.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.10.130. The real route should be ip route 10.1.0.0
255.255.0.0 192.168.10.130 but as you know, this will cause conflicts.

The second thing I need to do is modify my configuration on the destination router to
have a 10.100.x.x address on the ethernet interface. That is all fine but the network
it attaches to is a 10.1.0.0/16 network. As with everything NAT, it is all perception
and trying to understand where the translation takes place and in which direction it
should go confuses me. I know the NAT should happen on the outside interface on the
remote router but I am not sure how to set up the configuration.

My first question is how do I get the routing right. The source router has to have a
destination network defined on it and the destination router has to have an interface
with a network address within that range. OK, so with that set up, I can create a path
for traffic to come in on but it can never get out because the destination network
range
is different than that of the ethernet interface. Is it then necessary to create a
secondary address on the destination router's e'net interface?

Secondly, the translation. Since all I really want to do is get my router to send the
traffic down the correct path without interfering with other networks, do I really need
to use NAT?

Thanks again,
Dazed and confused,
Charles.

Moe Tavakoli wrote:

I just finished our Extra-Net design and the main focus was to resolve
overlapping address issues with all of our private-to-private connections
(point-to-point and tunnel mode VPN) My desgin called for the resolution of
addressing issues all on our side. The biggest key to this is that the
Cisco router will do routing before NATing. What I did was to set aside the
172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255 address ranges for this task. I extracted the
172.29.250.0/24 network addresses and made this our source address
(destination on the way back) when going into customer nets (this is the
only item we are forcing onto the customers.) Now the rest of the address
space I subnetted and set aside for destination addresses requested from our
network. Once this traffic hits the router which connects to our clients
 the following things happen:

A route determination is made based on the 172.x.x.x destination address on
the packet, this will make sure that you route the proper traffic to the
correct client incase of an overlapping issue.

Once the route determination has been made a NAT Inside is performed to the
source and destination (the source to the 172.29.250.0/24 net and the
destination to the actual "real" IP of the requested unit on the remote
 end.)

After that the packet is either put onto the wire (in the case of a p-t-p)
or hits a crypto map (in the case of a VPN)

I have tested this on a router and am implementing this on a Cisco 5008. It
will not work on the PIX since at this time it does not perform any
destination NAT (it will in ver. 6)

 Hope that helps.

 Moe.

 Charles.

your CIR (Committed information rate) is supplied by your SP ...you and him
agree how much you can have( depending on how much you pay)
usually the person setting up your router sets the "BANDWIDTH" command
to the CIR+ BR (burst rate) I.E how high you CAN go up to for a limited
amount of time ..again your service provider has set this for you .

your CIR (Committed information rate) is supplied by your SP ...you and him
agree how much you can have( depending on how much you pay)
usually the person setting up your router sets the "BANDWIDTH" command
to the CIR+ BR (burst rate) I.E how high you CAN go up to for a limited

Subject: Cisco IOS Documentation: How useful is it, really?

I'm interested in thoughts and opinions on the practical utility of
 the
official Cisco IOS Configuration Guides and Command References
 available
   in
print, on CCO, and on the documentation CD-ROMs that ship with Cisco
products. There have been a number of allusions on and off this
list
 to
   the
importance (or even necessity) of studying the official docs if
 "you're
serious about CCIE preparation." I even recall seeing some advice
 given
   by
someone that one should read the entire set of configuration guides
 and
command references before attempting the lab exam.

First off, the "practical utility" for the IOS Config guides is in the
configuration of the devices (duh), and not for light reading unless
you
have a photographic memory (which actually might be a detriment ;-)

If you've ever put together a configuration for multiple routers (for
example, even a small 5 site WAN), you discover that the parameters
set
 on
one device are dependent on its neighbors, and that if you don't get
the
commands right, the results that you want will not be realized.
 Sometimes
it can be easy (point-to-point T1's and RIP all using fixed subnet
 masks),
but the complexity rises as the routing protocol is implemented and
  features
required are added, and WAN technologies used.

How useful do you all find the IOS documentation, both with respect
to
   CCIE
study, and in general?

VERY. You go to http://www.cisco.com and click on Training and
Certifications. From there, there are links that take you to the CCIE
Blueprint, which lists a plethora (ad nauseum) of the material that
you
  need
to be familiar with, and it is NOT all Cisco documentation. But there
 are
lots of links to Cisco IOS Documentation there, and some good white
  papers,
   too.

Have you succeeded in using it to learn to configure services you
were
previously unfamiliar with, or is it just useful as a reference once
 you
already mainly know what you're doing? Is it even useful as a
  reference?

Yes - ergo ATM (LANE) and LECS/LES/BUS configuration at a router and
ATM
switch level (two different devices, two different IOSes). Also, the
interface buffers (queuing commands), and it has really helped me in
my
  BGP
configurations and in route redistribution.

Knowing the context of a router (one big ARP
table)
helps alot, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of the router
 in
terms of filtering and traffic movement also help. Interface-specific
commands versus global commands also proves to be valuable, because it
  gives
me a reference point to search the documentation.

My own thoughts:

I ask because I find the IOS documentation hard to digest at best,
and
actively confusing at worst. I use it frequently, but almost
  exclusively
   as
a reference to look up command options and syntax details. Even
then,
   half
the time I find that there either isn't enough detail in the manual
to
answer the question I have, or

Re: Mzmaker

2001-04-09 Thread Bob Timmons

How much RAM do you have on this router? If the uncompressed IOS is greater
than 8MB, you need 16MB of RAM. Remember, when you compress an IOS image it
will uncompress into RAM when booting. If you have 16MB of RAM, maybe try
re-compressing the original IOS image.

 I have a 2514 w/ 8Mb flash. When I used mzmaker to compress IOS 12 that
is
10MB it worked fine. However, after writing the .mz file to flash and
starting up the router it keeps looping "Error : memory requirements
exceed
 available memory
 Memory required : 0x00AF99A0

Exception: Software forced crash at 0x111E (PC)"

and giving this error. Does this not work since on a 2500 series router
the IOS runs in the flash and not ram? Thanks.

Re: what's the RSM utilization and what slow down network?

2001-04-09 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Hi...

I need to solve a network slowness problem. First, let me tell you
about our network. All our PCs are connected to 2 X 5500 switches
with RSM and divided into 3 VLANs 1,2,3 on each swtich. Both
switches are connected to each other via trunks and HSRP configured.
VLANs are routed via RSM in 5500s. By right, implementation of VLAN
can increase the performance and speed, and 5500 switch also a high
end switches. But our network is very SLOW.

Measurements? Exactly what do you mean by slow?

All parameter have been checked including the duplex type and speed
of the ports match with NIC. I suspect can it be the bottleneck of
routing process in RSM due to overwhelming packet for routing? Each
5500 are connected about 40 PCs. How to determined the utilization
of RSM ? what is the limit?

Besides, both 5500 are connected to the company WAN via two 1700
routers. And our network is extremely slow when accessing the WAN
especially on the Citrix traffic although we have prioritize the
citrix traffic. I don't know what is the reason? We have two links
128K, and 256K, it should be fast. I doubt whether the bandwidth is
correct or not? When I see the output of #sh interface as shown
below. Can u say that it is 256K ?

Wait a minute. How much of the traffic goes to the WAN? In other
words, you have 3 10 or 100 Mbps LANs that have to go out 128+256K?
If more than a fraction of your traffic goes to the WAN, that
probably explains things right there.

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 256 Kbit, DLY 2 usec

I heard from my friend that Cisco router is poor in handling citrix
and netbios traffic, is that true??

Citrix and NetBIOS are broadcast intensive. If the router has to do
broadcast forwarding or replication, that will increase load. In
general, the first problem with broadcasts is their interrupt load on
host CPUs.

How many hosts do you have per VLAN? With a broadcast-intensive
protocol, it's often unwise to have more than 100-200. 40 sounds OK.

Once hosts slow down handling broadcasts (and multicasts), then
certain of their requests (e.g., NetBIOS name queries) may time out
and you then get broadcasts storms. Individual broadcast

We are using OSPF in our WAN, but RIP in RSMs. Could the difference
in routing protocol slow down the network?

Strange behaviour of serial IF

2001-04-09 Thread Oliver Stock

Hi all,

I'm experiencing some strange behaviour of a serial interface in a cisco
7206VXR. When the counterside is down, this interface should be down too,
but is flapping instead. I've checked the configs of both interfaces but
haven't found any irregularities. Keepalives are set, both interfaces are
using HDLC as encapsulation. The only point I'm not sure about is both
interfaces using IP unnumbered Loopback0, but we have other interfaces
running with this without problems (shouldn't be a problem in a serial
1-to-1-connection at all). There is a VPN-connection running over this
interface.
IOS-Version of this router is 12.0(13)S, the flapping interface is
channelized E1. Does anybody has any idea, what can cause such a behaviour?
Thx in advance,
Oliver Stock

Re: 2 8mb flash partitions

2001-04-09 Thread Tim O'Brien

Notice the "read only" on the flash... On the router with 2 partitions you
will probably see one as read/write and one as read only. The 2500 runs from
flash, hence you have to boot from TFTP to keep the flash clear. After you
boot from TFTP you will be able to repartition and manipulate the flash
however you want. So boot from TFTP, erase the second flash partition, do a
partition flash 1 16. Reboot and you should have 1 16 meg flash partition.

Hey, everyone, how you all been?

The short story is I did not make it to day 2. The rest of this is a bit
long winded, and easily skipped.

First of all, I was quite pleased to find upon reading through my Day 1
scenario that there was nothing I couldn't do, given time. There are
plenty
of practice labs from several different sources which cover all the core
topics, so there were no surprises for me.

Secondly, I was quite pleased when during my review of Day 1 results
with
the proctor, he told me they were going to change the written
instruction
on a particular section because of the solution I used. I'm actually
quite
surprised it hasn't been done before. I was grudgingly given points,
although I was told my solution was definitely not what they had in
mind.

However, in the end, it was a few simple omissions that cost me the
points
I would have needed to squeak into Day 2.

Only one of the six of us who began together was invited to the second
day.

Things I learned:

1) having the core topics down cold is CRUCIAL. No kidding!

2) Time is crucial, but not, I believe, in the way I have seen it
discussed
in many places. I highly doubt that typing 80 words a minute versus my
20
WPM was the difference. Not when I spent as much time as I did
contemplating. You can't think it. You have to know it.

By 2:00 p.m. I knew I didn't have a prayer of hitting all the
requirements.
At that point I started counting points, putting myself in a defensive
mode.
By quitting time, if I got full credit for everything I thought I
deserved,
I would have had 31 points. As I found out in my review, I missed a few
simple things, and blew myself out of the water. This leads back to the
internalization of the core topics. You can't be thinking about how to
configure anything. You have to just bang them out, the same way you
bang
out shaving or washing your hands or eating your lunch.

3) Methodology is crucial. You have to have a good methodology that is
internalized and is habitual. You can't be thinking "what's next?" I
don't
believe it matters what your methodology is, so long as you are
consistent
and quick. My own methodology failed me because I was constantly
adjusting,
rather than banging it out.

4) I spent a good two hours last night in my hotel room debriefing
myself. I
have six pages of notes regarding my day one experience. This will form
the
basis of my study plan for my second attempt. I know that it is highly
unlikely I will have a scenario like the one I just worked on next time
through. But I will focus on methodology and speed.

5) Good rapport with the proctor is helpful. I was able to get the
information I needed by carefully wording my questions and making sure
that
my desired result was understood. The proctor is under a bit of stress
himself, with so many folks vying for his attention. He may think you
are
asking something you are not. I made sure that if I was not getting an
answer that made sense that I clarified my request, so that the answer
was
one that helped me understand. I will say also that the test I saw was
reasonably clear. The questions I had tended to be the result of outputs
from various show and debug commands, to clarify what the expectation
was.

A few other comments:

I was far too aggressive in scheduling my lab date. Should have pushed
it
out 60 days. Don't be in a hurry. Those without a lot of hands on need
to
spend several months of several hours a day practicing. No two ways
about
it.

There has been a lot of discussion about the patch panels used in the
lab.
All I can say is that the panels are clearly labeled. IMHO you have
nothing
to worry about. That said, I did have to revisit the rack twice, in
order to
make a cabling change. This was purely the result of a chicken or egg
situation, and not due to any difficulty with the rack itself. People
with
home labs know well the issue with hooking up routers back to back.

I sat next to a guy this morning ( a day 1 candidate ) who was getting
up
every few minutes and going to the back of the rack to move cables
around.
Completely unnecessary and driving the proctor nuts. There is no need
for
any candidate to touch the back of the rack.

You can't let little stuff stop you. Those with extensive hands on
experience know that sometimes routers do funny things like boot into
rommon or behave as if there is an extensive paste going on in the
configuration dialogue. I have a router here at home that boots into
rommon
once in a while. A reload has always done the trick ( knock on wood )
sometimes leaning on control-C will stop a misbehaving configuration
dialogue. No this is not NDA

Re: 2 8mb flash partitions

2001-04-09 Thread Gareth Hinton

Well this works for me evry time:

Erase the flash then reboot. This will boot from bootflash. The 2500 has
good functionality with bootflash.
Then partition the flash and TFTP new image on as usual.

I also noticed that if the flash stick which contained the IOS was in the
second slot, it appeared partitioned. By swapping the flash sticks over, ie.
moving the stick with the IOS on it back to slot 1, it went back to one
partition.
Have a try, see what happens if you swap the sticks round.

Worth a try, but the erase flash method definitely works.

have to remove the image - not too sure. I have only done this once - I

What you need to do is: conf t

Re: what does these 2 numbers mean?

2001-04-09 Thread Javier Contreras

Hi

the first is the RAM available to IOS processes, the second the
IO memory, used for packet buffers. You can change the percentage
allocated to the second with a command I don4t remember now (it starts
with memory...)
A router running 12.1t should automatically decide wich size to use,
depending on the hardware interfaces installed. It usually works, except
in conditions of low memory, (for example 48MB, AIM ATM, plus voice) in
which you
will need to adjust a little higher.

It is not extrange, just one interface is not receiving a "hardware

the interface (you see it going down) waits a little, and starts the

Re: How to determine CIR and increase CIR of FR?

2001-04-09 Thread EA Louie

ohhh no the bandwidth statement in the interface is *manually* entered
(defaulted at 1544 Kbit for a serial interface), and is used to calculate:
1. metrics for routing protocols, and
2. bandwidth utilization in the "show interfaces" display
so it's important to have it set correctly.

Some frame relay carriers (Sprint and PacBell come to mind) do not transmit
their CIR, so 'show frame-relay map' doesn't display their CIR.

The frame relay provider does need to be contacted to increase CIR. Higher
CIR usually translates into a cost increase for the circuit.

Here's an explanation of EIR - also see
http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/frame/1108fr2.html and
http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/frame/1206fr1.html

EIR is the difference between the port speed of the frame relay service and
the CIR. The port speed is set by the frame relay service provider, and may
be lower than the maximum interface speed - for example, on a T-1 circuit,
the provider could provide a 384kbps port and a 128k CIR. In this case, the
EIR = 256k, and it would be wise to set the interface bandwidth to 384k
(bandwidth 384 on the serial interface) to match the port speed. And the
port speed is usually the maximum rate at which one can oversubscribe the
PVC (that is, it is usually the frame relay burst rate)

The moral of the story - just because there is an *access circuit* at a
particular transmission rate does not assure you that you burst at that
rate. The interface is rate-limited to the port speed that was ordered from
the frame relay carrier.

agree how much you can have( depending on how much you pay)
usually the person setting up your router sets the "BANDWIDTH" command

Re: how can the router tell the dialer-in pc what is the gateway

2001-04-09 Thread Javier Contreras

HI

This is because the IPCP negotiation implementation in PCs is quite
different from the routers.
The PC will show that the gateway is the Ip address assigned by the
router
this is normal. Make sure you have selected in the dial up networking
icon "use default gateway on remote connection" or something similar,
depending if you have w98,nt or w2k

In the router, check that you have "after" the IPCP negotiation a host

the ip address of the router1's ethernet is 1.2.3.4,the pc connecting the
router1 via hub can acess network A,
the PCs use PSTN dialer in the router1's a/s,and get an ip address which is
 in the router1's address pool,in router1,i use async-bootp gateway
1.2.3.4,but after the pc dialer in the router,I use the command "winipcfg"
in win98,it tells me that its gateway is the ip address of itself!so the
 dialer-in pc can't access network A
Could someone tell me how can the pc access network A (except in the pc,use
 "route add default 1.2.3.4)?

it
will uncompress into RAM when booting. If you have 16MB of RAM, maybe try

  I have a 2514 w/ 8Mb flash. When I used mzmaker to compress IOS 12 that

10MB it worked fine. However, after writing the .mz file to flash and
starting up the router it keeps looping "Error : memory requirements

and giving this error. Does this not work since on a 2500 series router
the IOS runs in the flash and not ram? Thanks.

Re: what's the RSM utilization and what slow down network?

2001-04-09 Thread Rik Guyler

It is considered good form to leave VLAN1 only for management, although in
small networks, it may not be as "critical". In a large network, however,
doing this becomes very important. Here's some reasons why:

1) Keeps most/all SNMP traffic off of data VLANs
2) Adds an extra level of security, especially if you don't route to VLAN1
3) Most important - keeps all of the host-generated broadcasts from the
switches, which serves to reduce CPU load on the switches by not having to
look at every single broadcast

There are other reasons, but these are compelling enough to support this
philosophy.

Gareth- your half right. MZMaker is for the RUN from RAM routers, which is a
good portion of the images Cisco supports. I have used MZMaker exclusively in
the 2500's for the past 2 years (HOMELAB ONLY). It will not work on the new
12.1 (2500 Series), run from FLASH images- as you suggest. I'm not sure if
you have upgraded a lot of routers, via the CCO... but a majority of the
images have the MZ designation in the IOS name. Cisco uses the very same
program to compress their images...

Re: CCSI? Help

2001-04-09 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Hi Everyone,
I've gone through Cisco's website to get information as to how one will
achieve the CCSI(Cisco Certified Systems Instructor), but I didn't really
find any.

I will be very much grateful if any "active" CCSI give me information
regarding the CCSI and how it will enable one who is already a CCNP/DP to
train CCNP's ,CCDP's and other Cisco technical courses.
Thanks very much.
Zaki

You must be sponsored by a Cisco training partner, either as an
employee or contractor. No other way to do it. CCSI certifications
"belong" to the partner, not the individual -- if you change
partners, the new partner has to pay for recertification.

Re: what's the RSM utilization and what slow down network?

2001-04-09 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

There are other reasons, but these are compelling enough to support this
philosophy.

Your first two points are valid, but I don't see what a management
VLAN does for host broadcasts. An ARP, for example, goes from a
source to a destination IP address on the same subnet. While it is a
control rather than a data flow function, it must be on the same VLAN
as are both hosts.

VPN

2001-04-09 Thread Jacek Malinowski

Hey
I have a big problem with Cisco router and Allied Telesyn routers.
First of all I want to make VPN conenction between Cisco (2611) and
Allied(AR320S).
On the Allied site there is an example, but it does work :(.
First of all i have used ISAKMP on both routers (cisco and allied).
On debuggind i see that isakmp can't exchange key. But why ?
I have done:
create enco key=1 type=gen rand (on allied router)
and then
sho enco key=1 (on allied router)
I have received the key=
and this key i have put on Cisco crypto isakmp key= adress ...
And nothing.

RE: backup default routes

Brett,
I believe HSRP is what you are looking for. In addition, you can have the
_primary_ router monitor the external (to the big I) interface and cut-over
to the _standby_ router if that (external) interface dies.

HSRP

Standby [group number] timers hellotime holdtime
Standby [group number] priority priority number
Standby [group number] preempt
Standby [group number] track type number [interface priority]
Standby [group number] authentication string

Here's another link on some switch (prob) considerations w/ HSRP

Subject: backup default routes

I have a general question about the following scenario:

If I have two ways out to the internet using two different routers. These
two routers and
the firewall are connected to a switch. If I use a default route on the
firewall with one
path having a lower cost then the other, the firewall should forward the
packets down that path.
Now if the router in the preferred path crashes, will the other path become
active. In other words
how would the firewall know that the router is down. The firewalls link is
still active because
it is connected to another device (the switch), it isn't using a 'dynamic
routing protocol'. So
why would the firewall go to the other default route? (We could substitute
another routers instead
of a firewall in this scenario.)

Thank you.

Re: backup default routes

2001-04-09 Thread kent . hundley

Brett,

In the scenario described, the FW would not know that the router
had died. This is a problem that HSRP is intended to solve. You
would run HSRP on the 2 external routers and have a single default
route to the HSRP IP address. If the primary router fails, the
secondary router will assume the IP and MAC of the primary router.

The other ways you could solve this would be:

1) run a routing protocol on the FW
2) have the FW arp for every destination (you can do this by
pointing its DG to its own IP for most OSes) and have the 2 outside
routers supply their address for every destination using proxy-arp
3) use some sort of load-balancing device such as Alteon,
Arrowpoint (cisco), BigIP, etc.

Simplest answer is to use HSRP on the outside routers.

Regards,
Kent

LLQ/CBWFQ over Frame Relay

2001-04-09 Thread John Neiberger

We are currently in the testing phase of two separate projects involving
voice and/or video over IP over frame relay. Many months ago when we
began planning these projects I began researching my QoS options.
Almost without fail everyone suggested using LLQ/CBWFQ so that is the
approach I took.

It seems to work just fine and I don't see any problems with it.
However, while working on some video issues a TAC engineer informed me
that LLQ doesn't work for voice/video over frame relay.
"HmmmInteresting," I said. "It sure seems to be working!" He's
supposed to be sending a CCO link that explains why it doesn't work even
though it's working.

Perhaps my configuration is not the intended use of LLQ but it seems to
work just fine. I think the issue they have is that attaching a service
policy to the major interface has implications when you're really using
frame relay subinterfaces. However, it works great in my experience.

Anyway, I'm doing some more reading and it seems that CCO suggests the
use of ip rtp priority when running VoIPoFR, instead of trying to
configure LLQ. Have any of you had experience with these? Have you had
better luck with one mechanism compared to the other?

And how about adding frame relay fragmentation? The links in question
are T-1s so it doesn't appear to be necessary, but it might be a little
bit helpful. Any suggestions there?

I can see one major downside to using only ip rtp priority: there's no
way to see if it's even operating without turning on debugging. With
LLQ I can use simple show commands to see which packets are hitting
which policy.

Any advice from the pros?

Thanks,
John

geesh, read the question...

The poster wanted to know if he must START with CCNA to get to CCNP.

And the answer is NO you don't. It is customary to do so because it has the
fundamentals of all the other courses/exams. (and for one exam you get to
put CCNA on your cv)

But you can start anywhere - but - in the end CCNA must be passed before you
get your CCNP/CCDP.

I have worked with have CW2K and the 6509 switches and I you are able to
look at the %: utilization, multicast, broadcast, errors, collisions,
between these switches using the minirmon. You can also view the packet per
second per tcp port used, packets per second per xcast (broadcast,
mulitcast, unicast), and packets per second per ethernet error type (CRC,
undersize, ovrsize, fragments, jabbers). Lastly, you can look at the port
speed.

As far as I know all the protocal and application specific information (top
talkers by protocol, etc..)requires a rmon probe.
