I just took the test. You need to be familiar with PIX Monitor mode
which can be used to upgrade the software and reset the password. I
would say there are at max only one or two questions regarding this
subject.

Also some odd commands. Read the book in detail. A good amount of
questions on Firewall IOS, CBAC configuration, and Firewall IPSEC

I am currently studying for the PIX exam. I am using Cisco's exam
outline as
a guide.

The outline does not mention 'upgrading OS versions' as a topic on the
exam,
yet it is clearly covered in the book at some length.

Is the outline correct?

Just checking...

Thanks,

I don't think a 1201 would be a good platform. A 2901 on the other hand
would be perfect as long as you can get the images you want to run
loaded. I don't think the newer features for the Cat5k would be
critical in CCNP or CCIE prep.

Re: 99% CPU Utilisation with ethernet disconnected [7:32599]

2002-01-19 Thread Brian Dennis

Gaz,
The way the CPU utilization is calculated for your "show proc cpu" is 99% -
65% = 34%. The 34% is "IP Input" as you stated. The other "missing" 65% is
interrupts to the CPU. There really isn't a way to find out exactly what is
causing the interrupts to the CPU but since "IP Input" is so high it would
be safe to say that it has something to do with packet processing (i.e. fast
switching).

Which version of IOS are you using? You might want to try a different

OT: 99% CPU Utilisation with ethernet disconnected [7:32599]

2002-01-19 Thread Gaz

Hi all,

This is not really a problem, just curious and not been able to find a
reason for it.

I went to a site yesterday which ran 3DES on a 2650 with VPN module with
just serial and fast ethernet. The firewall connected to the fast ethernet
had been disconnected ready for me to move the router. I noticed that it
took a while to accept the password, and around a minute for write mem, so I
did a sho proc cpu.
CPU was running constantly at 99%, although looking through the detail there
was only around 35% in total. It was almost all in IP input.
I put no keepalive on the fast ethernet and cpu utilisation went straight
down to 1%.

Didn't have time to check what traffic was going on.

Anybody have any explanation?

Cheers,

Gaz

OK...I tried allowing GRE (47) thru. However the remote workstation still
shows an "established" connection (via netstat -n on the workstation), but
adding 47 as a conduit permit in the PIX did not fix the problem...

We are using a PIX 520, running PIX Version 4.4(8). I have opened
tcp/udp
port 1723 for our outside office members to connect to our W2K VPN
Server.
I can get the intial connect (shown in the "SH CONN" command), but it
never
finsihes the final "handshake".

Any problems with this verison of the PIX IOS not allowing PP2P
connection
thru?

Thanks

Re: PIX and PPTP [7:32593]

2002-01-19 Thread Darrell Newcomb

Man am I having trouble finding time to keep up with the postings.

You need to permit GRE through as well. PPTP consists of a tcp control
session and a GRE data channel. This way loss on the underlying
transport directly affects the data path rather than having the messy
tcp over tcp interactions when the network is pretty lossy or an LFN.

RE: Home-use PABX [7:32584]

2002-01-19 Thread Mark Odette II

James- I'm not sure about Nortel, Lucent, or any of the other manufacturers,
but I know you can pick up a 3COM NBX off of ebay for 1/3 the price of it
brand new. They are usually posted with different variable line cards, so
you can read the descriptions and get a little education from there as to
what you may want. Keep in mind that E1/T1 still applies to Europe as
opposed to North America, so you would have to make sure that your
Multi-Flex trunk card on your 26xx/36xx/AS5x00 router can support that type
of trunk connection directly to the P(A)BX. Also, keep in mind that you may
just have scenarios where you used E&M lines, so getting the appropriate
router equipment for that will serve just as well as if you were trialing
the Analogue FXS/FXO line options.

The thing to keep in mind is there are several combinations as to how you
want to "soup-bowl".

One thing to note about the 3Com NBX- it's web-administered, as compared to
some of the other P(A)BXs that are administered via one of the "admin"
version telephones, or via terminal service connection with a bunch of
cryptic commands. While the web gui would be a crutch initially, it'll sure
help learn the XYZs a whole lot faster... of which the XYZs are going to be
fairly the same across most P(A)BX vendors... just like configuring routers
for different vendors- TCP/IP is still the same no matter how you slice it.

That's my .25 for the month. It's all mere opinion, of which is always open
to modification based on new information :)

HTHs!

Subject: Home-use PABX [7:32584]

I have a home lab just now consisting of a number of routers for
data. I would like to get more in to the voice side of
networking and wonder where best to start. My thoughts are to
buy a small second hand PABX with E1 and ISDN PRI lines but I'm
really not sure if that's how a PBX would be provisioned. I
guess that older PBXs would have analogue lines which would not
connect to my routers as I want them to, though some analogue
mixed with the above digital would be OK. Of course, cost would
be a major factor but I haven't as yet seen anything for sale
that looked like a digital telephone switch.

So, that's the problem. As a starter for ten I would be grateful
if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Most network devices are designed never to be shutdown. Take for
instance the 2900 and 3500 series switches (either plugged and running
or not). Flipping the switch is about all you've got.

flick the switch? Seems to brutal to me.

RE: IOS Recommendation [7:32532]

2002-01-19 Thread R. Benjamin Kessler

The only way I've seen Cisco "recommend" any one version of IOS/CatOS over
another is 1) for customers with an open P1 case (that has been open for
quite a while, escalated to the Nth degree, etc.) where moving to a
different version of code would resolve particular known issues that they
are facing; or 2) paying for an NSA agreement (big $$ over and above
SmartNet).

I've also gotten several recommendations from 1st level TAC to upgrade to
the "latest and greatest" but I usually ignore these suggestions.

My current client calls this process "finding the 'least offensive' version
of code."

Doing a "bug scrub" can be quite labor-intensive and unfortunately as
Joe-Customer, I'm not able to see all of the open bugs - some are
"Cisco-internal." I only found that out when I had an open TAC case and the
engineer referenced a bug that I couldn't pull up in the bug navigator.

Fortunately, my current client runs the "network that Noah built" - i.e. two
of everything; as such I'm usually able to upgrade one of the devices and
wait some period of time to see of anything goes wrong before upgrading the
other. Obviously not a foolproof method...but, what can you do.

I also refrain from using code that hasn't been given time to "age" several
weeks (at a minimum); I figure the chance of a bug being known is higher on
code that is 6 weeks old than it is on code 6 days old. I've already
identified a few bugs for Cisco, I'm more than happy to spread this
experience to others who haven't had the opportunity.

If anyone has better ideas I'd love to hear them.

Ben

Byron,

Here's what we sell/recommend for a typical CCIE kit:

  2x 2501s
  2x 2503s (for ISDN)
  1x 2511 (reverse telnet AS)
  3x 2513s (TR/Ether)
  1x 2522 (frame-switch)
  ISDN Simulator (Simline2)
  Catalyst 5k switch
3900 TR Switch or 3920 Token Ring switch simulator
  misc. cables and accessories

Make sure all of the 2500 series routers have 16D/16F so you can run any IOS
you like on them.

thanks,

look for a perl script called "cisco audit tool" that can help you automate
a dictionary attack...this is probably your only hope of "cracking" a secret

CCNP and you will just need to pass the re-cert exam on that from here

Home-use PABX [7:32584]

2002-01-19 Thread James Harris

Thanks.

CCIE Written [7:32575]

2002-01-19 Thread James Harris

A good day for me on Thursday: I passed the CIT, the last exam
for my CCNP in the morning and passed the CCIE written exam in
the afternoon. Thanks to groupstudy and contributors for all
help.

As recommended by others I used the Boson exams to let me know
what I wasn't ready for and also a good book by Michael
Satterlee, All In One Cisco CCIE Practice Exam and Review
350-001. This book is possibly the best value starting point for
anyone considering the exam.

I think the Boson test was harder than the actual exam. I would
say that the CIT exam was slightly harder than the CCIE written,
although 350-001 did cover a lot of ground. You should know
principals of areas such as Token Ring RIFs and bridging, DLSW+
appeared, ISDN, some BGP and OSPF, RIP2 etc, a tiny bit of IS-IS
and NLSP. Above all, read the questions carefully. Many answers
can be eliminated which in many cases left me to choose between
two that /could/ be right.

For those who like to know my CIT score was 816 and CCIE written
score was 90% so I must have guessed correctly a few times!

Sometimes even the Cisco question writers must want some light
relief. To paraphrase one of the questions, it asked what device
would be used for testing a cable for a certain fault. I don't
think I'm giving too much away to say that the answer that
called it a Cable Defectometer was not the one I went for.

Best wishes to any others planning to take the exams.
- James

Re: Multilink interface vs virtual-template [7:32479]

2002-01-19 Thread nrf

Well, both the virtual-template method and the interface multilink method
use MPPP (RFC 1990). The only difference is in what commands you type.
The interface multilink method is a bit more intuitive.

In my experience, using the interface multilink method on lower-end routers
(e.g. less than 7200/7500's), is sometimes flaky, and changing the config to
virtual templates made it more stable. That might be fixed in newer code.
I don't know because we changed everything to per-packet load-balancing CEF,
which accomplished the same load-balancing as the MPPP with fewer bugs.

This is to prevent R4`s IGRP to not re-inject the routes its learned
from R2. Remember that R2 and R4 are in the same IGRP routing domain,
which IGRP is a distance vector protocol, that is objected to
split-horizon`s rule.

I think you missed the scenario ! R2, R5, R6 are on EIGRP routing
domain, while R2 and R4 are on IGRP.

You need to enter "ip split-horizon" on R4`s serial interface
because R4`s IGRP will re-advertise routes its learned from R2.

Have CCNA v1. Want to move onto CCNP. [7:32569]

Hi, I have CCNA v1.0 (I've have had it for around 1.5 yrs). I was wanting to
move onto CCNP. I've been on the cisco site and it mentions the fact that I
require a current valid CCNA to move onto the CCNP track. I have a few
questions:

1. When will my CCNA expire? Im guessing in 6 months time as I once heard
that CCNA is valid for 2 yrs.

2. If my CCNA expires in 6 months does this mean I have to complete any one
of the CCNP modules within the next 6 months for me to still be allowed to
go for CCNP without having to do CCNA v2? Or does it mean i have to complete
all 4 CCNP exams within the next 6 months prior to my CCNA expiring? i.e.
just wondering what happens if my CCNA expires whilst im undertaking CCNP.

Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
MrSpiffy

Scott,
What error are you referring too? The book is correct in regards to split
horizon and frame-relay.

The only 'shortcoming' I see in the frame-relay chapter is that it doesn't
beat into the reader's head the ip split horizon issue with frame-relay
physical interfaces ;-)
