Re: traffic analyzer [7:41267]

2002-04-12 Thread Kevin Cullimore

In sniffer pro, I've had success by specifying two conditions joined by an
OR statement for the filter.

Each condition is specified by selecting the Data Pattern tab of the Define
Filter dialog box and specifying appropriate offsets and data patterns.

For the case where you need to specify the source ip address, I'd use an
offset of 1A and fill in as many hex digits as it takes to uniquely define
the subnet.

For the case where you need to specify the destination ip address, I'd use
an offset of 1E and fill in as many hex digits as it takes to uniquely
define the subnet.

Note: if you're looking at an existing capture featuring traffic to or from
a specific host on the target subnet, you can use the data window in the
same tab to speed things up slightly by selecting the line of the decode
containing the address, clicking the set data button, and deleting the
characters in the pattern window which distinguish the host from the subnet
(generally, staring from the right: in the case of /24 masks, you'd
eliminate the value in column 3, corresponding to the last octet/2 Hex
digits).

I don't remember the vendor-specific info for etherpeek, but the
fundamentals are the same.

Guess what?

The DCN (CCDA) exam was updated today with new objectives without prior

Im trying to understand power redundancy in the Cisco 4006 switch. Reading
through the online information, Cisco seems to imply you must have at least
two power supplies up and running at all times. The 3rd power supply
provides redundancy. Other vendors allow you to run at least a partially
populated chassis on one power supply. If I have a 4006 with SUPII and one
48-port blade, do I really need three power supplies? Anyone have
experience
with 4006s and power supplies?

Thanks!!

if all he wants to do is sniff certain source and destination addresses,
this can be done using a filter... I prefer display filters just in case you

First, if you use local0-local7, you have 8 devices available, so
that might answer you question right away. Since that's most probably not
the case:

One approach is to use facilities to log for different types of
devices. For example:

local0 - switches
local1 - routers
local2 - firewalls
local3 - ids
local4 - load balancing devices
...

This way you could have all the relevant information in separate
files. Of course, you can take more important ones out from this and use
specific facilities for them.

If you approach the problem this way, 8 facilities is not that
little.

Another approach would, of course, be smarter syslog dfmon than the
one that comes with most UNIX/Linux distributions. You could use thatto
divert entries based on content adn/or source. Any hints in this regard
would be welcome :-).

Marko.

The 4006 comes standard with 2, you cannot get just 1. Don't try and run
that 4006 full with blades on just 1 power supply... Also, if you are going
to run the 4006 with inline power, you will need the additional AUX Power
shelf with 3 more power supplies.. nothing like plugging in 6 power
supplies. :)

We just bought a Cisco 4006 switch. Our reseller and
our Cisco rep both told us we need two power supplies
to run it and one for redundancy. They both went on
to say the power supply is the first thing to go.
They sold me on it so I got all three power supplies.

I got the switch a few weeks ago and I threw in the

unplugged one power supply and it still seemed fine.
I decide to unplug another and leave only one running
just to see if it would die. It ran for 30 minutes

didn't have anything attached at the time.

I am guessing if you really wanted to you could get
away with one, but when your spending that much(think
it was around $14k to $15k) an extra $600 or so to
protect your investment is no big deal. I also like
the fact that if two powersupplies die it will still
probably run and I can take my time replacing them. A
good night's sleep is worth $600 to me.

I believe that this link will explain everything about the Catalyst 4006

We have been running a 4006 for 2 years with 2 power supplies. So far we

That's what I did and it works a treat for only monitoring a given subnet.

Agreed. Ethereal beats Sniffer Pro, Etherpeek, or any other sniffer I've used
hands down. Best of all, it's free.

Hi Dear Friends,

I have 1 branch office connected to main office by frame relay. I noticed a
lot of traffic across this link and would like to find out what they are. The
problem is I don't have access to the branch office, therefore, everything
has
to be done in main office. I tried sniffer pro, etherpeek and anasil but they
only allow me to specify a particular source IP, not the whole branch office
subnet. Is there any other software I can use?

Thanks.

If you don't define a password on the VTY ports, that effectively disables
telnet. (as you cannot telnet to a box that doesn't have a VTY password

Re: any good reference or homepage for learning Cisco TCL [7:41298]

2002-04-12 Thread Kevin Cullimore

Many of the top hits have to do with IVR Auto-Attendant & other voice
topics, instead of more traditional router functionality. I'm wondering,
since this technology involves scripting rather than a primary piece of
router functionality such as filtering, forwarding or routing, and the
origins of the technology reside outside of ciso/other router vendors, if
the user might not be well-served by searching unix sites/forums.

Unless, of course, the functionality of the cisco implementation is limited
to telephony applications. Does anyone know whether or not that is the case?

RE: Disable Telnet [7:41293]

2002-04-12 Thread Scott Riley

Hey Rich,

Easiest way is probably:

!
line vty 0 4
 transport input none
!

However, you might want to reserve telnet access to a private range for
your own ease of admin in which case:

!
line vty 0 4
 transport input telnet
 access-class 2 in
!
access-list 2 remark Secure Telnet Access
access-list 2 permit 192.168.100.0 0.0.0.255
access-list 2 deny any log
!
Cheers,

Scott

If you enter "no login" under vty 0 4, then you'll get into

"login" means that the router prompts " Password:".
"no login" instructs the router to bypass that, giving

Sayeed,

When you say IOS load balancing, I assume you're talking about CEF
Per-Packet load-balancing? If so, it's a fine choice if neither router
is a GSR with an engine 2 line card.

If there is a GSR with an engine 2 line card, then it won't support CEF
per-packet load-balancing in any version prior to 12.0(21)S, and then it
only does it at a severe performance loss.

Re: DLSW direct encapsulation confusion-->for Experts only [7:41315]

2002-04-12 Thread Johnny Routing

With DLSW over frame relay, you can use direct encapsulation (frame map
dlsw, with pass thru), or DLSW Lite (frame map llc, no pass thru). On the
lab I'm sure they would make it clear which one they wanted and if not...
ask the proctor. Here's a link which explains it pretty well.

RE: Requirement for PT CCIE or near CCIE (DC based w travel) [7:41318]

2002-04-12 Thread Kelly Cobean

Haaa.Can I re-write the job post...Pllaasss

Client is seeking a highly seasoned CCIE with 5+ years of ISP/Large
Enterprise experience who has done years of project management and can tie a
neck-tie. Candidate must be currently un-employed, have no plans of
becoming employed in the next year, and must be willing to work for %50 of
his market worth. Candidate should enjoy getting jerked around at a moments
notice and despise the thought of reward for work well done.

Heck yeah...Sign me up (And maybe afterwards, you can take turns
stabbing me in the eye with a kabob skewer!)

RE: Dialer profile vs. rotary group? [7:41271]

2002-04-12 Thread Blair, Philip S

Legacy Dial
One Physical w/Dial

Rotary Groups
Multiple Physical Interfaces, One dialer Interface

Dialer Pools
Multiple Physical Interfaces, Multiple Dialer Interface

Dialer pool expands on the rotary concept by allowing a physical interface
to belong to multiple pools, the dialer interface can then reference the
pool of physical interfaces or multiple pools.

Hey all,

I am confused by the difference(s) between dialer profiles and
rotary
groups. All the text I've read seems rather convoluted - physical interfaces
can only be in one rotary group but can exist in many different dialer pools
(if using dialer profiles)? Is that the main difference? Rotary groups seem
to be an outdated configuration solution. Someone please point me in the
right direction...

 channel-group 24

 ip add 10.1.1.1

On the 4000 and 6000 series it can be done like this:
set port channel 1/1-2 35
set port channel 2/1-2,3/1-2,4/1-2,5/1-2 164

Maybe they'll find a CCIE who has gotten so rich on past achievements, that

RE: traffic analyzer [7:41343]

2002-04-12 Thread R. Benjamin Kessler

While we're off-topic (somewhat) -

What are people doing for non-Ethernet traffic analysis?
I'm specifically interested in T1 and V.35 interfaces

I've used Sniffers for this in the past with quite a bit of success however
given the current state of the economy, etc. my current client is interested
in seeing what their options are in this area.

Obvously in the Ethernet Market there's Ethereal, Etherpeek, Network
Instruments, etc. My preference would be to have the same interface
(assuming it would be GUI...) regardless of the network technology being
analyzed.

I've been spoiled by the "distributed sniffer" product for remote sniffing
and am looking for similar functionality.

Thanks for the input.

RE: Requirement for PT CCIE or near CCIE (DC based w travel) [7:41346]

2002-04-12 Thread Kelly Cobean

There is no doubt in my mind that Jeff is a good guy, and he's certainly
just doing his job like the rest of us. I was more poking fun at the
clients requirements. In fact, I see that Jeff is in my area, so you never
know, he and I might cross paths some day. I certainly wouldn't want to
burn a bridge with a guy who might someday help to keep me employed! I just
had to have a little fun with something that seemed to be so outrageously
unreasonable.

Incidentally, though, this brings up a good question for all of you
"already-CCIE's" out there...How many of you travel on a regular basis as
part of your job, and how much of your time is spent "on the road." I ask
because I'm fully prepared that my "no travel" lifestyle will change once I
go seeking the really fun jobs as a CCIE. My family won't like it too much,
but I'm sure we'll all adjust.

Jeff's a good guy. He's just working within the constraints of his
client's (unrealistic) criteria.

As I was first reading the post, I was thinking "This doesn't sound
bad. This is exactly what my company does."
THEN I got to the paragraph about rate. If I couldn't bill at least
$225/hr plus all expenses paid, I wouldn't consider the gig. However, I
know that there are a lot of talented people out there who aren't working
at the moment.
So here's the question to anyone in the group who's got the skillset
required: With the overhead of operating on a 1099 basis and the
uncertainty of how many hours this client is going to throw your way in a
year, how many of you would do this for under $200/hr? 150/hr?
100/hr? heaven forbid$50/hr?
Inquiring minds want to know.

The "interface dialer " command defines a dialer rotary group.
The "dialer rotary-group " command includes an interface in a dialer rotary

Why's that? Sniffer Pro will let you define entire ranges of
source/destination IPs in the filter.

In Sniffer Pro, when you define the filter, simply put 192.168.1.* (where
192.168.1.0 is the subnet and * is the wildcard).

Works for me =)

I looked at the site, but do not see any indication that it changed... what
am I missing? I also looked at the retired exam page:

Last one changed/retired was CCNA. Please let me know where I went wrong.
I am taking this exam Monday, so I would like to be aware of any changes!
