Re: CCIE Vs. Linux engineer (not Ph.d) [7:66669]

2003-04-05 Thread Adam Hickey
If I may...

I've had my CCNP for some time now and am trying to work towards the IE.
This year, my company put out a new product which requires a Linux platform
on the network. Since I am in the Operations side of the house, I was sent
to Red Hat training to support it. The Final Course was the RH300 which
includes the RHCE test at the end. It is a one day, performanced based,
test. The test was good. It was certainly challenging. But my Linux
experience goes back only a month prior to the test, since I didn't touch it
until I found out I would be sent to training, and I passed. Granted it was
the by the skin of my teeth but I passed. How many could pass the CCIE lab
while having only a month of experience?

After having gone through all of this, my thoughts are thus. Unless you have
to be a jack of all trades, don't waste your time. Cisco and Linux, although
using one sometimes requires the use of the other, are really two different
worlds. The time you spend on Linux is time that could have been spent
trying to become Priscilla or Howard :)

I also think nrf could not have been more correct about the upcoming
generation both being able to skunk the rest of us on Linux due to their
recreation time spent coding as well as their inabiluty/lack of desire to
learn networking. If you really desire to become a sysadmin, go for it.
Otherwise.

I think I can add my 5 cents in here. I believe any certification is good
the more you have the broader range of knowledge you will have. I believe
the Cisco certification is great and I grade it at the top, the reason is
the broad range of knowledge. The telecom world is huge and just knowing
all
the standards can take you a lifetime - if you like to take this
challenge!

I have looked at the Linux certification, and I guess you need to put
attention at what is offered. From what I have seen there are various
Linux
certifications - the typical the one is the Linux Configuration +
Administration. There seems to be lots of courses in this area, but it
does
not pay as good or is as hard as the Cisco (CCIE) certification - on my
humble opinion. The high paying jobs I have seen for Linux relate to
programming and good knowledge of the OS and its administration. This is
like having a MCSE + MCSD in the Windows world. I guess my suggestion is
that choose what you like to do first, then research the market place for
 the proper solution.

I'm not a CCIE yet and I only have a CCNP, but I have been involved in
lots
of application troubleshooting projects. I can tell you one thing, the
knowledge you acquire at the TCP/IP level is amazing. With little extra
research and study on the TCP protocols and sockets I have been able to
explain and troubleshoot applications that even the developers them selves
have not realized. The reason is that there is very few application
developers that go into network or socket level programming, so the
effects
of latency, bandwidth, and load kills their application once they are
 deployed over the WAN.

All said I think you should have both. In my case I'm going to concentrate
on the CCIE, but I would also like to keep a good knowledge of some OS -
not
 to become an expert though.

I saw in one of your emails that you also like a challenge -- well you can
try in combination with the CCIE the Telecommunication Engineer
Certification by www.narte.org that should give you plenty to study ;-)

 Good luck!

priviledge levels [7:53723]

2002-09-20 Thread Adam Hickey

All,

I want to configure a special priviledge level for our NOC in all our cisco
devices to basically have all commands except config. Looking at cco, if you
allow sh run at any priv level other than , the user will only be able to see
the commands they can configure which defeats the purpose. Anyone know a way
around this - so the NOC can have say a level 14 access and be able to see
the
entire running-config without being able to configure anything?

thx

Please, people, snap out of the Boson trance. I can't take it anymore. :-)
I
just had a discussion with Paul Borghese a few days ago about how Boson
always gets through the filters but other vendors don't. Hopefully, that
will change soon and we'll start to see better and less expensive options
come through the list without being filtered. In fact, I wonder if this
will
make it through the filter since I'm saying something bad about the
Boson
 cult? :-)

Please proceed with flaming, ragging, name calling, tar and feathering,

However, one of these days you'll thank me from preventing you from
getting
that Boson tattoo on your chest ( on the ankle for the ladies) :-)

If you're up for an argument, please email me offline :-)

Re: Order of taking CCNP exams [7:3160]

Since I am in the middle of my CCNP right now, I am curious if the relative
difficulty of each test, as listed by Phil, is generally the concensus here
in the group

Switching (easy),
BCRAN (hard),
Support (easy),
Routing (hard)?

I've only taken the Routing so far (studying for BCRAN now), and if they are
considered the harder tests, Switching and Support should be cake.

Depends on how schooled you are. Myself- I'd not studied for a cert. exam
in 2 years, so I started with the BCMSN (Switching). The Switching exam
is
mainly wrote memorization. I took them in this order: Switching (easy),
BCRAN (hard), Support (easy), Routing (hard). I was most concerned with
Routing, since I worked in all EIGRP shop. When you're one test away from
finishing the series, momentum gives you a great edge ( it did for me :o)

Materials: I used the Cisco Press CCNP books, Exam Cram CCNP books, the
Boson exams. The Cisco Press books pretty much make up the exams. If you
boss is on you to get the CCNP done (like mine was), it's possible (with
practical experience) to get these test finished in 4 to 6 weeks. A
co-worker finished them in 4 weeks, I'm a little slow (so 6 weeks for me
:o)
I hear a lot of advice goven toward jumping right into the CCIE written.
I
plan to take the written soon, but I have a lot of hands-on many
co-workers who have recently taken the lab (have a good idea of where I
need
to be). Guess what I'm saying is, unless you have a plan to pass one of
the
most difficult practical exams known to man (CCIE Lab)... taking the CCIE
written starting that 12 month clock ticking might be more than the
 average person has bargened for.

 All the best !!!

I did CIT (jan 08), CCIE RS Drake test (April 20) and Foundations

  to take the exams sooner.

  My comments?

Take CIT at the end, it tests your knowledge of the previous tests.
Foundations seems harder then the CCIE Drake test (at least for me it
  was).
The others you do as you like I guess, personally, I'd go for Routing
  first.

What does free memory have to do with trying to save a running-config

anything about trying to upgrade IOS either.

It might not save due to lack of mem. Make sure you have enough room to
hold
both the current IOS as well as the one your trying to upgrade. Otherwise
you will need to delete one of them first. Being that your on IOS 10.3
tells
me that probably you don't have enough memory.

And I see your title." LAN Engineer". I'm not picking on you, but it
just seems that for the question you just asked, its not one that someone

Re: Sample CCNA test question..bogus?

2001-03-15 Thread Adam Hickey

It would appear to me that by the statement 172.16.0.0/19 they are stating a
major net rather than one of the subnets created by the masking. If you look
carefully at the answers, D is the only one that can be right because it is
the only one that qualifies as a host address. A) 172.16.32.0 = a subnet
address, B) 172.16.64.0 = a subnet address, C) 172.16.63.255 = a broadcast
address within a subnet, D) 172.16.80.255 = a host address within a subnet.

If I am wrong, it wouldn't be the first time. but that's what I see.

Tom, Thanks for your response but I beg to differ. I agree that answer D
falls inside the range of the 64 subnet as you explain, but this is not
the
question. The question asks for a valid host using 172.16.0.0/19, not
 172.16.64.0/19
By my reckoning, the valid host range is 172.16.0.1 to 172.16.31.254

Well, since I'm not a qualified psychiatrist I don't want to comment on
 your mental

 becomes clear.

The /19 means that the first 19 bits are network/subnetwork bits and the
 remaining 13
bits are host bits. Therefore our mask would look like this:
  ..1110.

Since the first two octects are identical, we can dispense with them and
 concentrate on
the first 3 bits of the third octet and the remaining host bits.

Our subnet addresses would be as follows:

  X.X.. = X.X.0.0 Hosts = X.X.0.1 - X.X.31.254 Bdcst =
 X.X.31.255*
  *Assumes Subnet Zero Allowed
  X.X.0010. = X.X.32.0 Hosts = X.X.32.1 - X.X.63.254 Bdcst =
 X.X.63.255
  X.X.0100. = X.X.64.0 Hosts = X.X.64.1 - X.X.95.254 Bdcst =
 X.X.95.255
  X.X.0110. = X.X.96.0 Etcetera, Etcetera
  .
  .
  Etcetera (You get the picture)

From this you can see that:
answer A is the "wire" address of the 32 subnet
answer B is the "wire" address of the 64 subnet
answer C is the Broadcast address of the 32 subnet
answer D falls within the valid host range for the 64 subnet and is
 correct.

this is assuming vlsm. when you have a class network with varibale bits
in the subnet mask that is different than the default subnet mask, you have
multiple subnets and multiple host on each subnet. This question is telling
us that there are 3 bits as subnet bits (since the default for class B
networks is 16) and the remaining 13 are host bits. This arnagement
(172.16.0.0/19) calculates out to be more than one subnet and answer d falls
in one of the valid subnet ranges. If thew question was worded differently
with a particular subnet such as 172.16.30.x/19, then it would not be true.

"John Neiberger" [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/15/01 12:04PM
How could the wording be correct? 172.16.80.255 is a host address in
172.16.64.0/19, *not* 172.16.0.0/19. There is no correct answer
provided to that specific question as worded. I agree that it is trying
to be a trick question, but it fails because of poor wording or a typo.
Perhaps one of the answers should have been 172.16.15.255 or something
like that. That would have been tricky yet also correct given the
 question that was being asked.

 John

"Arthur Simplina" [EMAIL PROTECTED] 3/15/01 9:51:53 AM
I think the trick part of question here is that the answer d.
 172.16.80.255
seems like a broadcast address because of the 255 (all 1's in the last

octec.) So now the test taker faces the dilemna of choosing between two

subnetwork addressess and two "broadcast" addresses.

Cisco would want to know if you really know subnetting. Hence, the
 wording
of the question (which to my opinion is still correct).

I think I'll side with those who say there is no correct answer, but
there is an answer that's closer to being correct than the others.
 :-)

The question is asking for a valid host in the 172.16.0.0/19 range.
Answer D is not in that range! It is in the 172.16.64.0/19 network.
Valid host addresses in the 172.16.0.0/19 range are:

 172.16.0.1 through 172.16.31.254

I would agree that by making a subtle adjustment to the question,
answer D is the only answer possible. Given a /19 prefix length, the
only possible host address given in the answers is D, which forces us
 to
change the question to fit the answer.

This just appears to be a poorly worded question that not only allows
you to figure out the most-correct answer eventually but also forces
 you
to deduce what the actual question is in the first place. g In
 other
words, it's a typical Cisco test question!

Well, the first part makes sense. Dan West and I work together at Cable and

used to be a part of MCInet before MCI merged w/ WorldCom and sold most of
MCInet to CW.

Since the BIPP is a T1 coming into our office, I'm not so sure that the term
would reference a regional POP.

We have been having some issues with this line yesterday and really didn't
understand what a BIPP was supposed to be.

Actually, I have to correct only one point made in the response below. There
are a lot of people who are too lazy to search things out on the internet

either on cisco.com or the archives of the site. So this "send me free

Admittedly, I love free stuff too and will gladly take any help I can get

Because your contribution of 'send me free stuff too' is not something
that enriches the group nor helps one reach their goal of completing their
cisco certifications. There are plenty of repositories of Cisco
information across the net for you to peruse. Once the list degenerates
into 'send me free stuff too' then it is no longer useful. Most everyone
on this list is choosing to work hard, search the web for the information
they need, making a fiscal investment for the equipment and sacrificing
their time and lives to achieve these certifications. To have their time
wasted with your lazy 'send me free stuff too' request is the pinacle of
everything this list does not stand for. Try to stay focused in your

Re: BGP bandwidth question

Nope, it would probably kill ya. We have a neighbor (in our office building)
that tried to do full table. It ended up being darn near 130 Megs, maybe
126MB. So even if it is less than the 128MB that you have for memory, you do
not want to use ALL of your memory just to store the table. There will be no
room left for simply running your IOS.

Do you have a real purpose for full table or "just to see if you can"?

Re: OSPF question

2000-12-04 Thread Adam Hickey

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you can advertise a class C if
the address is assigned to the loopback. Because the router is not aware of
any network, only that address. I believe you would have to assign the ip to
an eth interface (or any other besides lo0) which would be known to the
router as a network directly connected and thus able to be advertised.

Please correct this if it is incorrect.

Think this through starting at the first OSI layer. If the line is down

It can't. You can't have a functional datalink layer without first
having

 hi ,

Anyone here knows which BGP path criteria takes precedence ? AS_PATH or
 local preference

From what I read it is local preference , but in actual fact it is not so
,
why I said this is because I have a customer who prepends their prefixes
many times then advertise them to us but on our side we set local
preference
to customers' routes to 90 which in fact will always come back to us if we
do this but this is not happening

Instead the prefixes go to another providers' link because their AS-PATH
is
 shorter

 why is that so?

How in the world is it possible that there are so many contradicting
answers
 to a simple question:

On a router: config register is 0x2102
there is no boot system command in the configuration
and there is no valid image file in the flash
 what will happen?

 Simple question, right?

 Now watch the answers:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_fix/cis2500/2501/
2500ug/conf.htm
 - xtocid288623
 This link says:

If after five attempts a valid Cisco IOS image is not found in Flash
memory,
the router reverts to boot ROM mode.
So, the answer is [boot ROM]

Next: Cisco Net Academy, Sem.2 CBT Chapter 5, 5.1.2 or Cisco Networking
Academy Program: First Year Companion Guide, pg. 252. says:
 - Try to boot from network and then from ROM
So, the answer is [Network, ROM]

Next: CCNA exam book by Wendell Odom (official cisco book)
says: will not proceed and terminate the boot process. You must do
password
recovery to change the cofig register.

Can someone with a hard evidence ( apparently my evidences suck ) please
tell
me which answer is the correct one?

 No guesses please.

Subject: ISDN line set up for 56k channels?

Hello Group, I have recently had an experience with swb where they said
that
the isdn line was set up for 56k channels instead of 64k and said i could
actually use my router with this if it was set fo 56k until they corrected
the problem. My question is can a cisco router ( i was using a cisco 800
at
the time) be set up to work with 56k as mentioned? if so do you have an
 example or sample config?
 thanks for any help,

While doing "sh isdn stat", numerous d-channels were showing up having both

Actually, I had this exact same thing happen about a month-and-a-half ago. I
tried exactly what it says below and received an invalid checksum on the new
images I downloaded as well. What finally resolved the issue (although I
have no idea how) was that I opened up the router and reseated the flash.
Although it appeared to be seated to begin with it helped as the next file I
uploaded (which was the same one I tried before) worked great!

Subject: Re: Router in (boot) mode

I have done a show flash and noticed after the file is listed
 it shows [invalid checksum]

This is a wierd one. The file is not too big for the flash,
and this was working a few weeks ago. This is why I am coming
to the assumption that the flash file may be corrupted. I have
promted a reload and this same condition results. I am going
to power cycle which I feel is not going to fix anything. I am
wondering if a netboot from another source would fix this
issue, but I'm still not sure of the exact problem? Anyone have
any advice or knowledge they would like to impart on me?

This is more detail than previously mentioned, which leads to a
different course of action. First, you have a corrupted image
on your flash, which needs to be replaced(the image, that is).
Generally, this can be accomplished by the following steps:

 1. Place a TFTP server with the valid image and necessary
permissions and proper IP address directly connected to an
 Ethernet interface on this router.

 2. Ensure that you have a properly bound IP address on the
same Ethernet interface from the same subnetwork.

 3. Ping the TFTP server from the router. If it doesn't work,
check to make sure you did a "no shut" at interface
configuraion mode for the router. Once the ping works, go to
 the next step.

 4. At priviledged mode on the router, execute the following
 command:

 copy tftp flash CR

It will then prompt you for the following:

Address or name of remote host []? Enter the TFTP server IP
 address

Source filename []? This will be the valid IOS image name on
your TFTP server, such as, "c2500-js-l_120-3.bin"

Destination filename [c2500-js-l_120-3.bin]? Just press CR

At this point, a copy operation should commence.

The real issue is why your image got corrupted in the first
place. That is one area you have not resolved. Assuming that
somebody did not recently replace the software image, it may
have been an isolated incident. OTOH, you will need to monitor
this router to see if there is a repeat occurrence. If there
is, you may have corrupted flash. Flash does have a finite
life on write operations. It is electrically erasable
programmable read only memory and is subject to a relatively
short life. Flash can also be damaged by dropping/mishandling
as well. If it happens again, you may need to replace the
flash SIMMs or PC card flash.

 HTH,

 Paul Werner

Re: ip classless ?

2000-08-23 Thread Adam Hickey

Hmmm, let's see where to start

1: EIGRP uses classless routing by default unlike IGRP.

2: Default routes refer to static routes--not dynamic routes used in RIP,
EIGRP, IGRP, etc.

3: The command "ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 w.x.y.z" enables a default
route--not "ip classless"

By the way, this is thepuffer's friend ( not the puffer ) responding to
this. I just couldn't resist. Also, I hope I didn't make any major mistakes
in my claims. If so I will be really bummed.

 This is wrong amigo.

The 'ip classless' command is used when configuring default routes. It is
used because when you create a default route on a router it gets
advertised
as 0.0.0.0 in addition to the default network. When a router recieves
the
advertised default route it will forward packets to a destination which
does
not appear in its routing table. Specifically you need to use the 'ip
classless' command when using IGRP and EIGRP because they only advertise
the
network you configured on them. If you do not use this command to enable
the default path to be used for non-connected subnets of the same major
classful network, the packets will be dropped at the router.

Ah yes, classful addressing. Blast from the past...

I am assuming you are aware of the classes of IP addresses, and how a
class A address has a first octet of 1-127, etc..

Well, what IP Classless means is that the router *does not* assume that
an
  IP address with a first octet of 1-126 is a /8 address, 128-191 a /16
address, 192-223 a /24 address and so forth.

Sound a bit archaic? Hmm... So are IGRP and RIP. ; )

Your question is kind of tough to answer directly, since you do not need
 to
use IP Classless unless you need to break, say a 10.x.x.x network into
/24
subnets. If you don't include IP Classless, the router will assume the
 mask
is instead /8 and things will get weird...

Re: ip classless ?

2000-08-22 Thread Adam Hickey

RIP and IGRP are Classful routing protocols. Meaning that they will
recognize and IP by the first octet and automatically use the default mask
associated with that class. They will disregard any subnets. Therefore you
have the ip classless command which tells these protocols to forget about
the default mask and listen to subnet information.

Make Sense?

2500 flash image

2000-08-10 Thread Adam Hickey

I have an issue that is really mind-boggling to
me.

I have a 2514 that only has 4MB Flash 1MB Ram. For
some unknown reason after I ran a password recovery, the router booted
offthe ROM and the image in the flash showedan invalid checksum. Not
completely understanding the problem I went to get a new image of CCO. I went
through the procedure to add the new image, however, every new image I have
tried reveals an invalid checksum as well. It does state the checksum read and
the one expected. So, I basically viewed all images available looking for any
that might have the checksum that is expected by the router only to find
none.

Does anyone have any insight?

Any and all help is appreciated.

Re: IP classless/Default routes

2000-08-08 Thread Adam Hickey

No, there is nothing incongruous here. You add the static route for the
default route which tells the router that "if you don't know where the
destination is, just shove it out over here". Lammle has to use the two
static route commands because router B is in the middle of two networks. So
when router B doesn't know of the destination it has to shove the packet out
two sides so that each of the other networks can take a look at it and
decide what to do with it.

It is this kind of confusion that leads to the use of synamic protocols
rather than static routes.

 ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 162.16.20.1

 ???

The reason I ask is that in his book for CCNA 640-507, he states on page
253, "Default routing is used to send packets with a remote destination
network not in the routing table to the next hop router. You can only use
default routing on stub networks, which means that they have only one exit
 port out of the network."

The two books seem to say contradictory things. Is it because the 507
exam
is based on a different IOS? What gives?

Just run Cat 5 the DSL modem to an Ethernet port of the 2500 and use an AUI
adapter. That's what I do.

Does anyone know if there's a special cable that goes out of the ethernet
port of a standard DSL modem and in to the serial port of a 2500 router
(DB60) ? I don't think the signalling is the same but, hey, I might find
some surprising answers from CCIE gurus!

If that won't work, I guess I'll have to settle for a 633DSL modem from
Cisco... pretty expensive stuff for a modem.

 Hello group,
I have been asking arround and it seems to me that UNIX admins are way
more
desirable than router admins. I guess from what I have been hearing is
that
if you are solid in unix you are pretty much set for life. This is just
what I hear in the chicago area. Mainly HP-UX

Finally attained my CCNP/CCDP status. Thanks to all on the group for
answering most of my questions (and ridiculing some of my answers - hell
we
 all have to learn...)

I intend to study towards my CVOICE specialisation and then take the CCIE
drake late this year. Looking to comlete the CCIE lab towards the late
half
 of next year.

For those that will invariably ask the order of my exams was as such...

 CCNA 1.0
ACRC (took it 3 times, passed on the third go - its hard)
 CIT
 CCDA 1.0
 BCRAN (from 2.0 track)
 CID
 BCMSN (from 2.0 track)

This makes me a newly minted CCNP/DP 1.0. I can now finally have my life
back after being at the books for 53 weeks (from start to where I am now -
 you're never actually finished).

Does anyone know what is in the CCNP/DP kit you get from Cisco? I was
told
you get a silver gong and a posh vertificate. Can anyone confirm this?

Now for a nice holiday in the sun (without a Cisco book).

 Regards from London.

Keith - CCNP CCDP (this is the only time you will ever see me use
letters
 after my name!)

2) I wanna take a test, what resources do you recommend?

Re: Logon to NT Server?

2000-06-26 Thread Adam Hickey

Correct me if I'm wrong...

Microsoft OS's use broadcasts to find the PDC.
Routers will not forward broadcasts. Therefore you will need to use a
helper-address to convert the broadcast to a unicast address.

Was it a good study aid? Would you say it helped in passing the test? Or
would you say that the books (Lammle and Chappell) were enough?

port-forwarding

2000-06-06 Thread Adam Hickey

I have an issue that I have been mulling over for a
while and have arrived at no conclusions. I was wondering if anyone here might
be able to help.

I have a 2611 routing 3 computers to a DSL
connection. The router is running NAT since I was only allocated 1 static IP.
All internal systems areset to 192.168.X.X class IP's. Is there any was
possible to set up any sort of port-forwarding that would, for
example, take any external ssh request (port 22) to my static IP and
forward it to my internal FreeBSD box?

Thanks
