Any idea when they might add the successor to 3DES (AES)?

OT: RE: Orange lights on Catalyst 2900XL Switch [7:22109]

2001-10-05 Thread Glenn Johnson

Not on point, but an amusing quote nonetheless from
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/53.shtml

VTP
Another cause of inactive ports is when the VLAN they belong to disappears.
Each port in a switch belongs to a VLAN. If that VLAN is deleted, then the
port will become inactive. Some switches show a steady orange light on each
port where this has happened. If you come in to work one day and see
hundreds of orange lights, don't panic. It could be that all the ports
belong to the same VLAN and someone accidentally deleted the VLAN that the
ports belong to. .

Hey all, I have a quick question regarding a Catalyst 2900XL Switch.
All appears well, all the status LED's are green with the exception of two
of them. Coincidentally, those two ports are connected to the Uplink ports
of two Hubs. Now both hubs work fine, all connected devices work fine, a
show int on the switch show's both the ports with a Orange LED as UP and
the Line Protocol as being up. Physically all appears to be working. It just
bothers me that those two ports are Orange. I thought Orange only meant one
thing, NO GOOD. Just Curious if anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks for your time

RE: Is this going to be a trend for the CCIE cert??? [7:19296]

2001-09-10 Thread Glenn Johnson

While I agree that such an arbitrary distinction has the potential to be
abused, this person is likely looking (hoping) for some heightened level of
assurance that candidates will have many, many years of experience. I don't
know enough CCIEs to comment on the validity of such an assumption regarding
the correlation/magnitude of relevant experience with a given CCIE number.
However, my guess is that simply by virtue of having such a low number that
quite a few of the early CCIEs are now firmly entrenched in the upper
ranks of management (and thus possibly, but not necessarily, out of touch
with current technology in the field) -- but that assumption could be quite
flawed.

Worst case scenario -- give the recruiter your number in HEX, maybe they
will be unable to convert it properly :-)
(just kidding of course)

I was just cruising on the dice jobs board when something caught my
attention.

dice.com/DandL/k/ktii.213.html (paste into your browser)

This is the first time that I've personally seen a recruiter target a number
range for a CCIE job!!!

My question aloud is this -

With the impending CCIE #10,XXX coming by next year are we going to find
that there is going to be the perception that the higher your number the
less value to the customer/employer/client.

Of course, the headhunter/manager will never even comprehend that the CCIE
made today has a much broader range to cover as say the CCIE of 3 to 5 years
ago. NO, I NOT BASHING ANYONE JUST STATING A FACT.. :-)

DAMN! I knew I should not have procrastinated for the past year before
stepping up to the lab. I can just hear it now.

Me: Yes, I'm CCIE #xyz

Headhunter: Thank you, but we're looking for a CCIE from block #abc

I hope this does not become the quid pro quo among
managers/headhuters/recruiter or this could be a bad sign for the CCIE in
the long run.

Just MY percecption I guess!

Do you want to know about X.25 (your subject) or X.21 (your text)?

I don't believe there is a theoretical maximum for X.25 - this has been
discussed before, though, so try checking the archives.
X.21 will run with no problems at 2 Mbps. We have lots of X.21 interfaces
running at 2 Mbps in our network.
However, it does depend on what hardware you're using - see for example
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/core/cis7505/interpro/instal
l/ipicgfsp.htm#xtocid88350
which describes limitations on the total bandwidth an FSIP can cope with.

Hello,

I recently convinced my employer to give me a Cisco CPA2503 (the white box
CiscoPro router) whose power supply died. I have two questions.

First of all, before I check into finding a replacement power supply, I read
on this list a long way back (probably 1999ish) about someone who had made
an outboard 2500 series power supply from a PC power supply. Unfortunately,
I can't get a search of the archives to turn up that post that I remembered.
Does anyone happen to have that link, or perhaps is the original poster
still lurking?

Secondly, is it true that you can order a replacement boot ROM for the
CPA2500 series and make them able to load standard 2500 series images? If
so, does Cisco charge for these boot ROMs, or are they like the other
routers where you pay for shipping only?

Thanks,

James Willard, CCNA

Maybe I am confused

If yo uwant redundant switches, you would implement spanning tree... This is
at layer two...not three, where routing takes place.

Now if you mean using it on say a cat 6509 with a routing module, then yes
you can implement it. But it would still be at layer three and not two.
You would not create redundant switches. Again, this is where spanning tree
comes into play.

I have a product catalog dated June 1998 (don't ask why) - it has a section
titled introducing a new Cisco product: Cisco 2600 series - modular access
routers

So around then, I guess.

Yes, I think this might be the instructor(s) that might conduct the

The classes would be here in CA. As my present position does not allow me

I am also trying to assemble some equipment here at work for a lab as a

If it's what I think that you are looking for, this type of cable does
exist, I have used them between btb 26xx'x and 25xx's.

Among other places, you can find one at -- www.pacificcable.com (use the
QuickNav drop-down to go to the 'smart serial' section)

Here's a pic to confirm:
http://www.pacificcable.com/PicFrames/Photos/CAB-SS-6026X.jpg (this one has
the DCE on the wic2t end, if you want it one the 60 side, you will need to
order another version (which is available)).

I'm not affiliated with Pacific Cable, but I have ordered from them and
would do so again.

Subject: Implementing SSH on Cisco IOS

Doesn't Cisco realize that telnet is a security risk on Cisco devices
especially for us who often has to telnet to the router remotely to
fix/troubleshoot problems? Because username and password are traveling
across the Internet in CLEAR TEXT, the risk is too great. I work for
a company that would not allow us to telnet to the router from the
Internet to our company routers and switches. I know that SSH (version
1) is available on IOS 12.1.x (only on 7000 and GSR platforms). Why
don't they just implement SSH on all platforms? It is not that difficult
to do this (in my opinion). Because of SSH lacking in Cisco IOS, I have
to drive all the way to work to troubleshoot when there is problem.
This is suck. You could implement all access-list all you like; however,
the problem is that telnet will no encrypt information especially username
and password across the Internet. SSH is widely implemented on
almost all of Unix flavor and Juniper as well. How difficult is it to
implement it on Cisco IOS?

Anyone disagree?

RE: DSL internet with PPPoE

Any reason (other than $) that a simple linksys ($100) switch wouldn't
allow you to accomplish your goal?

Sample -
http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?loc=sku=10249719PageFormat=7#prod
uct

It has DHCP, NAT, IPSec/PPTP pass-through, forwarding, etc. All of this for
what seems like a bargain price.

I'm not affiliated with Linksys. A Netgear switch would probably be fine as
well.

I don't see how any of this will provide me with what I desire. I desire to
plug my DSL modem directly into my router and use that router's address as
the gateway for my LAN. There's no reason that with only ONE registered IP
address that every PC in my LAN can't access the internet. There are many
solutions for this, I would probably use PAT on the router for instance. The
only thing that stands between me and my desire, is this friggin, useless,
does nothing but supply accounting info to the ISP, waste of bandwidth of a
protocol, PPPoE! Once you plug the Modem into the router, you somehow have
to authenticate to the ISP PPPoE server with a name and password. I have not
found a way to implement this yet. This make me mad!

 Thanks for the ideas...

Tim, PPPoE fundamentals are pretty much similar to PPP over WAN links but
PPPoE breaks the boundary on router/modem brings down to host level where
PPP is initiated just like a router but instead of serial links they send
PPP request over Ethernet frame which may add more Layer 2 frame as
configured on router/modem towards dslcloud.

If second PC need to connect to internet that PC too needs an internet
account PPPoE software in order to access else first PC can be multihomed
provide a gateway service to other host on LAN.

Be sure to keep several code release versions around as they tend to use

 Hi,

I would like to ask what's the minimum modules I need for a Cat5000 for a
 home lab?

 I'm considering a SupI(ws-x5009) and a ws-x5010 (24pt 10meg telco ports)
or
 ws-x5012 (48pt 10meg telco ports).

Is this sufficient for a CCIE lab, the SupI has a 100Meg uplink surely
this
is enough to to ISL trunking, routing, etc, etc?

Or should I go for a ws-x5213a (12pt 100Meg). This module is much more
expensive than the other because of the onboard RJ45 and being 100Meg.

 Thank you for you advice.

First of all, this is very confusing. I have in front of me right now two
very different resouces regarding !A and !H. The first is the one I sent
and
what I learned in school and is the correct answer on exams that I have
taken.
That was the ref I sent to 'intro to cisco router configuration' that i
sent
earlier from pages 230, chapter 9, where it states !H means blocked acces to
host due to access list.

Now, the rest i this is a printing of what i got from cisco command ref
on-line and it says exactly what you told me, which was the !A meant a
problem
with an access list that was adminstratively unreachable.

What is really strange about this, it that these two conflicting statements,
one saying !H is a reject due to access lists and the other !A means
rejected
due to access lists are both ciso ref's. My book is cisco press. So what's
up with that

Did someone goof and maybe a type-o, or are they both correct?

As I sit and comptemplate this, the reading in the cisco book, says
!H is sent when the PROBE IS RECEIVED but blocked due to an access list.

and on line-
!A is sent when administratively unreachable due to an access list.
!H is sent when host is unreachable.

Are these two things the same and one, which I doubt, and if that is the
case,
what is the differences between the two.

I would really like to know and need some imput. Chuck

The rest of this I did not write: I copied it from on-line under cisco
command
ref troubleshooting commands under traceroute.
=

Table 118: IP Trace Text Characters Char Description
nn msec
For each node, the round-trip time in milliseconds for the specified number
of probes.

*
 The probe timed out.

?
 Unknown packet type.

A
Administratively unreachable. Usually, this output indicates that an access
list is blocking traffic.

H
 Host unreachable.

N
 Network unreachable.

P
 Protocol unreachable.

Q
 Source quench.

U
 Port unreachable.

Last minute CID exam comments?

2000-11-03 Thread Glenn Johnson

I'm taking the CID exam later today -- any last minute tips would be
appreciated.

I've read the cisco press book and reviewed the objectives.

I'm just curious about what "surprises" (if any) people may have come
across.

(All in a generalized NON-nda violation way of course :-)

Thanks

Thanks for the heads-up, but "intergration"

I wonder if it's a typo or just "inter"-speak :-)

Cisco Press just released a new voice/data book that is fabulous.

Integrating Voice and Data Networks
Author: Scott Keagy, CCIE
ISBN: 1578701961

This book, which is 800 pages long, might be overkill for the CVOICE test,
but it is a must-have for anyone actually implementing a data/voice
project. The author is a CCIE who has worked for both Cisco and Pacific
Bell. He knows and can clearly explain the details of a huge variety of
voice topics, including VoIP, VoATM, VoFR, SS7, digital and analog voice,
QoS, etc.

Don't be thrown off by the 800 pages. The author is such a great writer
that he manages to explain everything so that anyone can understand it. But
he doesn't over-simplify to the point of being wrong, like some authors.
(Some of the first books that came out on voice/data were basically the
author's PowerPoint slides ported to book format, errors and
over-simplifications included.) Scott Keagy took care in producing a
comprehensive book that doesn't gloss over the issues voice/data
integrators will encounter. The book demonstrates Keagy's detailed
understanding of the relevant standards, protocols, and implementation
issues.

Well, I just can't say enough good things about this book! And I do not
just say all this because I also wrote a book for Cisco Press. ;-) I am
sincerely in awe of this great book.

Priscilla

Hi,

Can anybody suggest reading material for CVOICE2? I am currently using
CVOICE student guide 1.0. I don't know if it is sufficient. Looks like
CVOICE and CVOICE2 are pretty similiar according to some posts I
read. Your comments are greatly appreciated. Thank You.

FW: CID Question of the Day - Oct 30, 2000

2000-10-30 Thread Glenn Johnson

Minor point, but -

How would you have answered this sample question from Cramsession's free QOD
service?
My choice would have been "C. HDLC" as I would think "standard" might be
interchangeable with "default" (with HDLC being the default encapsulation on
point to point serial lines). Perhaps the question refers to Cisco to
non-Cisco devices (with PPP being necessary due to the proprietary nature of
hdlc)?

Today's Question

What is the standard serial line encapsulation method?

A. PPP
B. SDLC
C. HDLC
D. LABP

The answer to today's question will appear in the next mailing.
But, if you can't wait, you can get the answer at:

[The link above states that "A. PPP" is correct.]

Exam Sequence for CCNP/CCDP?

2000-09-17 Thread Glenn Johnson

Does anyone know if the CID exam be taken before any of the other three
CCNP/CCDP exams?

I was unaware of any sequence requirements, just Cisco's suggested path,
until I noticed in a few CID books that this exam "could" be taken after the
other three were completed.

Thanks

RE: Foundation Courses !!!

2000-08-31 Thread Glenn Johnson
Title: Foundation Courses !!!

from http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/lan/programs/ccnp.html

relevant
excerpt:

Why offer two different exam paths for CCDP or CCNP
(that is, Foundation Exam alone versus the Routing, Switching, and Remote Access
exams)? The material covered in the three individual exams versus
the one Foundation exam is the same. It is a personal testing choice in
providing an alternative to those individuals proficient in all technical areas.
It allows a candidate to take one Foundation exam versus three single exams. A
single exam in US/CAN costs $100US for a total of $300US. Foundation exam is
$200US with a savings of $100. Internationally, a single exam costs $150US for a
total of $450US while a Foundation exam is $300US with a savings of $150US. The
single exam paths consist of individual exams mapped to individual courses.
The Foundation Exam Path consists of 3 courses mapping to one
exam. A possible drawback to taking a Foundation exam is if
you fail one of the three primary areas you fail the entire
exam.[emphasis

for two-three ccnp exams and the availability in Prometric centres, also would
like to know did anybody of you got his ccnp taking this foundation courses
  instead of the regular path,
I heard that only one exam is needed in addition to

vendor question

2000-08-29 Thread Glenn Johnson

sorry if off topic --

I'm looking at buying some cisco equip (26xx rtrs) and came across a place
called www.lanblvd.com with what appears to be good prices (at least they
are a lot less than www.CDW.com - where I normally buy items). Does anyone
have any experience they might share regarding lanblvd?
Thanks in advance.
