Jim,

The only other config on the LS1010 is the actual NSAP
address. The command is

atm address 47.0091.8100..0050.736f.6a01.0050.736f..00

This is in global config.

Hope this helps,

Re: where is routing table located in the router?

2000-08-14 Thread James Xie

Interesting question.

Yes the routing table is dynamically built by routing protocols.
There are also static routing entries if you created in your
configuration file. Locally connected active networks will be
entered into the routing table immediately after the reset.

If the question goes to how the router performs routing using
routing table, its different.

In the Cisco Express Forward mode, routing table is consulted
for the first packet of a given destination. IOS will store the
forward(port) information in the module/adaptor card RAM.
Subsequent packets target to the same destionation will
be forwarded to egress port without going through the routing
table.

An article said the routing table is located in RAM.
I got a little puzzled ,cause if the router is powered off by accident,
will the table get lost totally?
If the router is a backbone one,the table should be very big ,so after
the power cycle ,the router has to attain all the routes once again,it's
time consuming.
Does the router put some static routes in NVRAM or flash ,or all the
routes stay in ram ?

Thanks.

Re: Loopback Address

2000-06-08 Thread James Xie

Loopback is a virtual inteface on the router. It
is up all the time.
There are some routing prototocols require a router ID
such as OSPF and BGP. If you use a phyical interface's
ip address as the router's ID, when that physical interface
goes down, the routing adjacency will change/break. In the
OSPF case, right after the reboot, when all the physical
interfaces are not up yet (keepalive have not been exchanged),
the OSPF process may not start at all, because no router ID
is available yet.
Another usage is, when you use unnumber layer 3 addresses,
sometime, you want to test the reachability to the router,
you can use the loopback interface address for this purpose.
You can also use loopback interface for testing purposes. Such
as, define a bouch of layer 3 networks on the lookback interfaces
(you can have multiple loopback interfaces on a router)
and test the routing protocols and updates etc.
You can also use lookup interface to perform routing load balance:
S0 S0
R1 === R2
S1 S1
On the routers you can setup static routes with the next hop addressed to
the loopback interface address on the other router. Since the router has
two paths to that loopback interface, therefore you can reach the next hop
using two paths. This static route can be useful, for example, in the case
of BGP routing etc.
You can also use loopback interface to perform debug without affect any
physical connection. Such as observe routing updates etc.
That's all I can think about. Maybe others can add more..

Yep, all you need is to configure the Helper address (ip helper-address
[address]) command on Router1, and as long as Router1 has route to LAN3
(whether by static or routing protocol... and Router3 has route back to
LAN1).
See, Router1 will take the DHCP broadcasts and convert them into unicast
packets and send them directed to LAN3. For the "address" argument in the
command you can use the specific IP of the DHCP server or use the broadcast
address for that network (192.168.100.255).

Re: Eigrp convergence

2000-06-08 Thread James Xie

There are a couple factors make EIGRP converge faster:

  1. Even EIGRP is a flat routing protocol, it does support
some features of hierarchical routing protocols, such
as address summary, VLSM and supernet. (vs RIP)
  2. EIGRP does incremental updates (vs RIP)
  3. EIGRP routing process stores all the neighbor's routing
  table, which causes covergence faster.
For example, in case a single network link fails, in OSPF,
all the routers in the same area will re-calculate the whole
routing table. Depends on the topology, EIGRP may only
affect a few routers (vs Link-State)
  4. Compares to OSPF, EIGRP routing process requires
less memory and CPU time . Depends on the size
of the network. In small networks, EIGRP has more
  overheads than other routing protocols.

Backup interface never comes up.

2000-05-25 Thread James Xie

Hi,

it works fine. The router can place a call to the other end and traffic
passes through
perfectly. (It means all the isdn interface and dialer configuration are
correct).

My problem is, once i placed the interface as a backup for another serial
interface
(frame relay ), the bri0 is placed in standby mode automatically and even
the layer 1
and layer 2 for the bri0 are administratively shutdown automatically. I
tried to shutdown
the primary frame relay interface and the backup bri0 never comes up.

I tried it on different routers with the same result.

Is this behavior normal or I missed something?

Thank you very much for advice.

RE: How to modify router's configuration with a script?

2000-05-25 Thread James Xie

Roger,

There is a perl module for cisco router configuration managment. It uses RCS
support version control, editing, pulling and pushing configurations.

You can either use the commands or call the modules in your own perl scirpts.

The module is located at: http://www.cpan.org/modules/01modules.index.html

Look for keyword cisco.

update.

Why would you want to do that?

I am looking for a way to create a script(with Perl, C, etc) which can
telnet a Cisco router and modify the configuration constantly according to
other condition. Anybody has any idea how to do it?

Thanks!
