It goes to show us that they are not interested in a long run strategy. If they were they would be focused on customer satisfaction and relationship building. It is common retail/marketing 101 knowledge that you make your greatest return from your existing clients and that it cost more money to go out and get new customers. Here it would have been advantageous to simply issue a statement to Debbie explaining what they explained here AND said given our commitment to our customers we will honor our unintended commitment. In this Debbie becomes a satisfied customer who will return in the future and spend more money, and tell others here and else where about her positive experience. I actually gave a copy of this book to some IT staff I had. A little story for ITPARADE: Some years back I owned a company based in Ca. that did Network Consulting, Distribution, and had some computer retail stores. I was visiting in one of the stores when I over heard an argument between the retail manager and a customer. I walked over and listened. It seems this fellow had purchased a computer system for his family and was having nothing but problems with it. He had brought it into the service center several times only to return home and end up with the same problems. The sales manager was standing his ground that the problem was the software this man and his family were installing. I stepped in and gave the man all his money back and offered to cover his time for the trips into the service center. I than told him that I stand behind our product and I too, from the sounds of the problems, believed it was some software. To prove this point I told him I wanted him to keep the computer. He walked away with his money and the computer. I than worked with the sales manager as I believe that there is no such thing as a bad employee only a bad manager (me being the bad manager). Some months later I was requested to join a meeting between our network sales group and a new client. Turns out the president of that firm was this very same gentleman. He said that I was right and it turned out all the problems with the computer were due to be some old Disney software that his kids were loading. Because of his experience with me he was awarding this several hundred thousand dollar contract to my company and wanted me to know. Need some advice with DOCSIS [7:12340]
Hey all I am having a wierd quirk and thought maybe you all may help me find an answer. Thanks in advance for any help: We've just set up a docsis environment with a CMTS including a UBR7200, CNR (running on a an E250), and UBR900's as cable modems...the RF network seems fine, and the cabling is cool. The longer I work and put off school I know it will be harder for myself to get the degree. Now I am deciding to go to school full time (after I save up some money) and get the degree done. I guess the only reason I feel hesitant about doing this is because I am getting closer to getting the CCIE and that has been my focus for the last year and a half. But I have been thinking about it and I think having the degree behind me will help in the long run if I want to go into management or if I decide to maybe get into network programming (which I know nothing about but am kinda curious to learn). Part of me wants to get into the field now, but the logical part of me is telling myself to wait and get the degree. I dont want to get a cisco related job while going to school because that will postpone myself getting the degree or take away from my job because I am focusing on school. I have several rack containers made by Engineering Packaging Corporation. They are made of hard shock resistant plastic with 19 dual rail racks inside mounted on shock absorbers. I used these for shipping pre-built head ends to field locations. They have casters that mount on the bottom for rolling around. Both the front and back open for accessibility. This reminds me of an argument my two boys, 3 and 5, had earlier this week. On swore that their bike was faster. I tried to explain that there is the length of legs, mechanics of the bikes, and age, (experience), that added to the difference. I was making the point that the bikes, though physically different, were in the end basically the same, (different platforms that achieve the same purpose). Well I ended up walking away. Last time I checked this was a group that was focused on network engineering. Hummm this is OS independent. Seems to me our job is taking all the stuff Sys Admins have, and all the stuff that Infrastructure has, and all the stuff internal support has, and make it talk. We don't care whether it is Unix, NT, CPM, Apple, or an old VIC20. Our job is to make the stuff play well together. My hat goes off to Alan and Peter, as well as some others, for their very civilized, and educational discourse on BGP/OSPF. I can only hope to be where these people are some day. I was referring to purchases I make at bankruptcy auctions where you post your bond, and physically attend or work through proxy. E-bay is were you sell the stuff bought at these auctions. If you can get to one of these auctions you can find some great deals. Just make sure of the lot count before you bid. You may think you are bidding on one or two and than have a coronary when you pay and find the single bid was for a lot of 200 units. Also remember to sit on your hands and do not scratch any itches when you are in the auction. CCNA = difficult to find a job CCNP = around $65k annually SUN certs = around $65k annually MCSE = around $55k annually CNE5 = around $45k annually Notes certs = around $60k annually Here's the catch: CCNP, plus SUN cert, plus MCSE, plus CNE5 = around $65k annually. CCIE = around $125 annually The difference is that CCIE's will get higher end, network architect type positions, while all the other certs will get you Systems Administrator jobs that might also have responsibility for a router or switch or two... Outside the System Admin circle, there simply isn't the demand for these lower end certs. If you want to design and build large, complex enterprise networks, you wimply won't get that job until you are a CCIE. If you want to administer those networks and the systems that reside on them, then these lower certs are your ticket to an interview... This is the DC, Baltimore, Northern Virginia market mindset, but I expect that things are similar elsewhere. Fluke makes all sorts of test equipment. They make some great LAN analyzers for troubleshooting network problems. Some of their handheld meters are cheap, others are very expensive. For me they paid for my Cisco and Sun training. For non related training, (anything, any subject), they pay 80% up $4000 per year. You may need to sign a term of employment agreement were you will be responsible for repaying a % if you quit within the term. Hope that helps!
