List of Practical Tasks [7:32492]
After being idle for a few months I've picked my studies back up. After reading the Cisco Press Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks book cover to cover. I've learned a lot about the theories of VTP, STP, MLS etc. What I don't know how to do is basic configuration tasks. So, I downloaded Ole's switch training tool. It's great! It has some good practical things that you should know how to do. My question is can anyone give a list of practical things you should be able to do from memory without using the trusty ?. example... Show a detailed list of MLS entries. Add 1234-1234-1234 128.34.12.34 to the routers arp table. I learn best when I have problems to solve. Re: NetWare Core Protocol over TCP [7:26131]
Finally something I know a little bit about. NWIP is dead (thank the Novell gods). NCP runs natively over TCP now. When installing a Netware 5.1 server TCP/IP is now the default protocol. If you want to migrate from IPX to IP you do it by having a NetWare 5.x server serving as a IPX/IP gateway. It works very well. I've seen this in several environments especially new installations. In new installations there is very little reason to run IPX on your NetWare box at all. Now time to return to that switching book. Keith Townsend MCSE, CNE, CCNA http://townsendconsulting.com Priscilla Oppenheimer wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... I am interested to know how many people use NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) over TCP. Like Howard, I didn't think this was the normal way of handling a migration from IPX to IP, although it certainly makes sense. So, a survey: can people on the list let us know if they use this? Note: I'm not criticizing Kevin, just gathering information. Regarding PEP, I did some research too. I couldn't find any proof that the transport-like part of NCP was based on PEP, which I thought disappeared, but it does make sense. The service provided by PEP is essentially the same as the service that NCP provides in its integrated transport level, to use Howard's great terminology. I would love to get a Sniffer trace of NCP over TCP. I have a rather old version of Sniffer but a brand new version of EtherPeek. Also I know NCP really well so I might recognize some stuff even if the decoder doesn't. The packet you sent before is just the TCP SYN. Do you have something later in the session with some NCP data? Could you send me (not the list) an attachment of a cleaned up trace file? I'll acknowledge you in my new book! ;-) THANKS. It's possible that servers thus configured encapsulate ipx within ip, but I'm far too undermotivated to ascertain the validity of that guess. I suppose that Novell has been fairly successful at obscuring the original meaning of PEP: many hits on general web searches turn up some documents on programmatically generating sending ipx packets in the name of fine-tuing network diagnostic tools such as DOOM. Where are you seeing the two different trees. Are you seeing them from Display Servers or from the SAP list on the router or from a Netware Client. If you are seeing this from a Router or Server this is pretty normal. But if you are seeing this from the client then this points to a communications problem between the Servers or a NDS corruption. Re: PIX Recommendations !!! [7:11651]
I'm looking at a similar issue. The question is how do you go about implementing the PIX without touching 1000 desktops and interrupting business. I looked at this from a Boarder Manager perspective. Very similar to Proxy but its a firewall as well. I would suggest you continue to use the Proxy server as the default gate for your internal clients. Set up access lists on the PIX to only accept connections from the proxy server and any clients you are bypassing the Proxy. This should be pretty seemless and still secure. Raees Ahmed Shaikh wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Dear all, Thanks for all the suggestions and explanations. The main core reason for asking for the recommendations was, that I was not really sure about the critical balance between security and usability. Everybody know about the MS-Proxy and its vulnerabilities and its openness to attacks. We bought the PIX just to secure our network from all those unknown vulnerabilities, I personally thought PIX box would be a nice buy. since it is less prone and has some built-in functionality to prevent such vulnerabilities. The question which I face now is production change without interrupting the business, and change of activities to our end-user, meaning to say the end-users should not feel that something has changed. Moreover the integration of the PIX with the current NT security model, the URL filtering option, and various DNS records modifications made me think to keep the proxy in its place and add the PIX as the first line of defense. Internet---Router---PIX---MSPROXY-LAN A simple question which always comes to my mind concerning security is that, if the internet users have sessions to our MSproxy server and internal network, Isn't our internal network still vulnerable to those attacks which were their prior putting the PIX. We have enabled Winsock apps on the proxy, and lot of apps are been used by our LAN users. Was that PIX, worth a buy. etc etc. Still not sure how the final design will look like. Just putting more time and research onto it. Re: DMZ Basics [7:10970]
The PIX is extremely versatile. 1. E-Mail Server You can put your mail server on the inside but I would suggest putting a smtp gateway on the DMZ. Have you MX record pointing to that device. 2. 1600 - PIX - ? - ISA I'm not sure why you would want to put something between the PIX and the Proxy server. You can do NAT at the PIX or the Proxy. You can set the Proxy for Authentication or set up a Radius or TACAS+ server to let the PIX do it. I would leave you configuration as it is with clients pointing to the Proxy for Internet Access and the Proxy go through the PIX. By default the PIX lets all trafic out. You can put an access list on the PIX and only allow traffic out from the Proxy Server and possibly you mail server. Sammi wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... The only way I know of is to use a 3rd party software to tunnel IPXIP. You already have one tunnel through the VPN so, I would imagine it's possible but VERY slow over a 56K link. I never had to implement NWIP but from my understanding this allows you to tunnel IPX over a wan link so, the client/server still needs to run IPX. The best solution(IMHO) is to add a NetWare 5 Server running IP/IPX have VPN clients connect to the NetWare 5 Server via a pure IP client and this will allow them to get IPX based services on your NetWare 4.1x servers. Re: instructor led training
Here's what I can tell you from three friends that took the course. I'll try to be as objective as possible. They started the class last year (they were the first class). The equipment came in very slowly. This shouldn't be a problem now because they've had a few more classes since. The instructors are CCIE's and are very knowledgable in the things that you expect them to be(CCNA,CCNP material). As the course gets deeper in more complex the greatest value is the gear and the Study Group that you form with you class mates. You can use the equipment as much as you like coming in as much as you like. All three of my friends have their CCNA, CCNP, CCDA, CCDP and CCIE written. One has gone on to work for Cisco althrough he was already a CCNP when he started the class. One has moved into the Cisco group of our VERY big publishing company(In the top 3 of the nation). And the other is in no hurry he is still in the Server support team. Disclaimer - This portion will not be objective. The class is expensive 10K or 15K. The greatest benefits again are the Lab and the Study Group. You could get a pretty descent lab for 5K and as for a Study group For the equipment you don't/can't buy you could always rent time. If you do well at self study I don't believe you will feel the money was worth it. If you do better in a structured instructor-lead environment then this is a good value as they do have "job placement" after you complete your CCIE...LOL... Hope this helped. (a new instructor is coming aboard to teach the CCNA portion. He is a CCNP)15 grand for the course. I have sat in on one of the classes. I was pleased with the instructors knowledge and teaching style. The lab was fairly impressive also. I am currently a CCNA. I have no high hopes that this school will actually produce someone of CCIE level within eight months (though they claim the first class graduated and ten out of ten students passed the written. They are awaiting a time slot to take the lab)I do believe it is good training to continue and gain the CCNP along with practical knowledge and good hands on training. Which is something I'm severely lacking at this point. How much do you guys think a 4000M with 16MB ram and 4MB of flash with no modules is worth. And how much would a dual serial module cost me. Boson Tests for BSCN
I just brought the Boson tests for the BSCN and took the first test. I did well considering I still have a bunch of BGP studying to do. The test seemed kinda easy(or I'm just smarter than I thawt :-O). My question is to those who have used these tests and taken the BSCN. Are the questions generally easier on the Boson than on the real exam? If they are representative of what's on the exam then I'll be placing a call to Sylvan sooner than I thought. Re: Novell servers - rconsole list keeps changing
If what you want to accomplish is see the same list in rconsole all the time the easy thing to do is to use Rconsole for NDS. It reads the information in NDS instead of a SAP list. If you want to continue use "Display servers" then you should follow the directions WKelly gave. But if you are trying to move to a pure IP environment use Rconsole for NDS is much more stable in a NetWare 5 environment. Frame Relay for the Lab
I'm deciding on a router to use as a frame relay switch in my lab. I read a view posts back about the 4000 being a good value. How is it compared to a 2521 for the lab? Re: AccessPro cards
I've used these cards for studying for my CCNA. They give you full functionality of a 25xx. As you get more advanced in your study you will find limited functionality due to the fact you're limited to 1 serial/ethernet port on each card. The work perfectly fine for stub networks. I've been able to find a couple with 12.0(3) enterprise loaded. You'll spend about $400 bucks on e-bay for these. Most come with 10.3 version of the IOS installed. Keith ""John S.
