Studying Switching [7:75030]
Hi all, I started off studying routing and found it to be a topic that interested me a lot. I just couldn't get enough of halabi Doyle and the rest. I studied a lot, practiced a lot and was thrilled when I passed the exam in beta. Next I started studying for switching. That didn't turn out as well as I thought it would. I couldn't just work up the same level of interest. I have been analyzing the reasons and have come up with the following: 1. I've never worked with switches much, so I don't know too much about them, as opposed to routers. 2. Study materials. I've been wondering, has anyone else faced similar problems in their quest for CCNP. Also, could someone recommend some good materials/resources for switching other than the official Cisco book? Any/all answers would be appreciated. Thanks. -N -- Nakul Malik H-342 New Rajendra Nagar New Delhi - 110060 Mobile: +91-9811424477 Ph: +91-11- 2582 3488 +91-11- 2585 0155 Fax:: +91-11- 2575 2904 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=75030t=75030 -- **Please support GroupStudy by purchasing from the GroupStudy Store: http://shop.groupstudy.com FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html
Re: Cable Lengths [7:74776]
looking at it practically, you can run cable at 150 m and still make it work. but the question is, will it meet the reference crieteria. there are a lot of things to be looked at here of which an important factor is attentuation. -Nakul [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I have a question regarding the max length for a 100BaseT cable. Granted I haven't done a wealth of research on this so feel free to point me to google if the answer is mind numbingly simple, which it probably is I have always understood the 100M limitation on 10BaseT ethernet cable to be attributable to the time it would take a collision signal - assuming you are running at half duplex - to be returned in time to prevent the next packet from being sent. In other words any longer than 100M and the sending station would not get the message in time that there had been a collision and thus continue sending packets instead of backing off. I have heard attenuation mentioned, but not as the real reason for the distance limit. My question is given that many stations are running 100 full duplex these days - thus removing the collision concerns - does this effectively change the maximum distance for cable runs? Or is attenuation truly a factor in anything over 100M? In general I am referring to standard Cat5 cabling Just curious... **Please support GroupStudy by purchasing from the GroupStudy Store: http://shop.groupstudy.com FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=74780t=74776 -- **Please support GroupStudy by purchasing from the GroupStudy Store: http://shop.groupstudy.com FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html

Re: Cisco BGP Exam [7:73516]
I dont think i agree with you. I really liked Sam Halabi's OSPF Design Guide and his BGP Case studies. I admit they can be a bit daunting the first time around, but then they are not meant to be Exam guides. In fact, i really like the writing style and find myself wishing there were more docs written in the same style. I am not against authors who explain technical subjects by giving anologies to football games and mountain climbing and the like, bu it really starts to bug you when you are sitting in your office, up for 2 days in a row trying to solve a complicated problem and you have to read about how classes in C++ are like flour or some stupid anology refering to a fishing trip. I myself prefer the direct and to the point approach, no frills for me. Another excellent resource for BGP, and well written are Avi Freedman's BGP presentations. Just my opinion though. -Nakul juniper wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, Can anyone recommend a good book for the BGP exam Mark **Please support GroupStudy by purchasing from the GroupStudy Store: http://shop.groupstudy.com FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=73617t=73516 -- **Please support GroupStudy by purchasing from the GroupStudy Store: http://shop.groupstudy.com FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html

What I saw was: [data+(local IP hdr)+(carrier IP hdr)+layer2 formatting] as it went through the cloud. Potentially, that's a lot of overhead. If that's not a problem, fine. Annlee The Passport 6000/7000/15000/2000 are all at heart ATM switches. The Passport 8600 series is a renamed Accelar (Bay Networks) switch. They were going to rename it Optera 8600 during the spring of 2002, but then decided to forego that--I never heard why. The Passport 6-20K series are optimized for ATM. They run everything through the backplane, even if it departs the switch on a different circuit of the same Function Processor (blade)--for instance, traffic comes in on port 3 of an 8p DS1 and goes out port 6 of the same DS1 FP. It comes in, passes through to the backplane, and then back into the FP and egresses. Passage out of the FP and through the backplane (which is a bus on the 6/7K and a fabric on the 15/20K) requires segmentation into what are called Passport cells, of 64K (IIRC), sized to hold an internal header and an ATM cell. SAR for this is done on the FP, I forget the name of the processors that do it (QBIC, maybe), but there's an ingress path on the FP all the way through to the backplane and then an egress path from the backplane to the egress port. Each path runs through one of the processors. Reassembly is performed on egress, if needed, which it isn't for ATM. Re: basic PRI question. [7:72691]
I think so. You would need to setup DDR for the PRI. Install the PRI route with a higher AD than the leased line route so that it is only used when the leased line is unavailable. Also, set up thresholds for the PRI channels. -Nakul Stuart Pittwood wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I know this is basic the answer is probably yes but I'll ask anyway We have a 1Mb leased line betweem two sites, if we also had 8 channels of a PRi at both sites, in the event that the leased line was unavailble could the available PRI channels multilink and dial into the remote site to give at least some connectivity if yes, could these channels also be used for remote access when they are not needed as a backup to the leased line. Any input appreciated. Re: BRI [7:70059]
I suggest u debug ISDN in its entirety. use: debug isdn ? to see all options for debugging ISDN. It seems your call setup is taking too long. so monitor the d channel as well. See how long it takes for call setup on initial establishment (1st channel). Then check the time it takes to setup the call for the second channel. Some providers, atleast a while back, used the D channel to carry performance data. It may be the case with ur provider as well which is why it is taking long to setup the second channel. If this doesnt work, try sniffing the line. RE: OT: Is it worth it to pursue CCIE RS and CCIE Security [7:57944]
[demime could not interpret encoding binary - treating as plain text] Adrian, To some extent your apprehension is justified, even natural. All of us in the networking community, the world over are facing the same fears. I hate to admit it, but i myself have thought about not going for the neext certification because the market is already saturated with networking people. But i know one thing, and that is that most of these so called networking professionals, even though certified dont know jack about the stuff they are certified on. And i do know this for sure because, i teach CCNA courses at sevral institutes and i see the quality of students coming in. I generally have a class size of 5, and out of the 5, when they go out, i can identify maybe 1 student tho is worth his salt. And its not because i dont teach them. Its because the dont know anything about networking. In a 40 hour (5 day) course, i cannot and willnot teach them what a network is, or what a cat5 cable is. If this is the calibre of people getting certified, ask yourself, can they really match up against someone who has paid his dues, so as to speak, to the network god. I dont think so. There is another aspect as well, most of us dont do this just for paying the bills, even though that is the most important byproduct. We do it because we love it. at least, speaking for myself, i can with a clear concience, say: I love what i do! I just happen to derive a great amount of satisfaction from my work. So, hang in there, and remember, even in times of recession, there is always a market for quality -Nakul Date: Sat, 23 Nov 2002 02:53:37 GMT adrian jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] OT: Is it worth it to pursue CCIE RS and CCIE Security [7:57908]Reply-To: adrian jones Hi Everyone, My CCIE RS lab is scheduled for December 2002 and Security is scheduled for January 2003. I am currently working for a fortune 500 company as a network engineer. The pay is OK; however, the company is looking to downsize within the next couple of months. I think I will be out of work in the next couple of months. I've been looking for work for the past three months. At the moment, the job market is not that great and I've been having problem finding work. Last week I get an a job offer as an Oracle 9i DBA (I learn Oracle9i when I have free time and manage to get certified in 9i). I don't hate Oracle but networking is my first choice. If I can't find anything within the next few weeks, I would have no choice but to accept this position (it pays the bill). I know two colleagues that I am working with. They both have CCIEs (in the 5xxx #) and both are having problem finding work. None of them have been able to land new jobs for the past four months. They told me that the market is flooded with networking people and it is definitely an employers market. Both of these guys have at least 10 years of networking experience and it amazes me that they are having problem find work. To make the matter worse, even my own brother is a CCIE and he also is having problem find work. Granted that he only has two years of networking experience. Nevertheless, he has been looking for work for the past 5 months and no job offer. He is telling me the same thing that the market is saturated with networking folks. He has to compete with many qualified unemployed folks out there. That makes me question myself whether if it is worth it to pursue the CCIE RS and CCIE Security given the market condition. These guys have years of experiences and certified and are without jobs. I would have virtually no chance with people like them even if I am CCIE certified. They are certified too. I know that it is too late to cancel the lab; however, this is just my personal feeling. I am wondering if anyone out there is feeling the same way. I would like to hear your take on this. Thanks. Re: Router forwarding directed broadcasts [7:57780]
[demime could not interpret encoding binary - treating as plain text] I think that if you send a capture of the config(, obtaineed by typing sh run at the enable mode) a solution to your problem might be found. Of coure, in interests of security, please feel free to change names and passwords. -Nakul Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 18:29:44 GMT Priscilla Oppenheimer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Re: Router forwarding directed broadcasts [7:57780]Reply-To: Priscilla Oppenheimer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm sure they will, but my routers still forwarding subnet broadcasts even with this line in a sh ip int output:- Directed broadcast forwarding is disabled Why don't you send us a config and some discussion of the situation and your methods of testing.
