RE: Please help!!!! [7:70369]
Not much! You can run 12.x code on the 4000s, but the semi-modern stuff like Fast Ethernet and ATM modules started with the 4500 series. Concerning the 4000, the maximum I have seen from the factory of the EPROM chip type FLASH board is 8 Megs and RAM has always been capped at 16 Megs. Around Y2K timeframe, I was contracting for a large government agency (with a lot of 4x00 routers) and we received Cisco SmartNet upgrade kits that provided us the ability to use (2) 8 Meg 2500 series FLASH sticks (new style FLASH board) and also included replacement 10.X boot ROMs. This really did very little for the routers, since the feature rich IOS needed 32 Megs of RAM (which is where the 4000M comes in). The 4000Ms are 16 FLASH and 32 RAM limited. All the best! RE: remote management of routers? [7:70349]
Dial connection to the AUX via a modem or obtain a Zero (64, 128, etc., etc.) CIR DLCI into the site, it would probably cost as much or less than a POTS connection. My old employer, due to a last minute requirement, installed a real smooth thing for a customer a couple of years back. We used dial activated power supplies (call and after a certain set of prompts enter a code) to power AUX connected secure modems. This allowed for a controlled backdoor into the network for management (a.k.a. troubleshooting). All the best! RE: 7505 problem, microcode? [7:70288]
Is this a new or existing configuration? Not every 75xx and 72xx module is backwards and forward compatible. I first began to notice this about 2 or 3 years ago when receiving our first VXR chassis and have since dealt with the microcode issue (old module syndrome) in 7500s as well. When this happens Cisco will generally posts the compatibility issues on the CCO, and offers some sort of trade up program (very little credit I might add). http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/hw/modules/ps2033/prod_bull etin09186a00800a3f83.html I have never seen microcode available for download (chipset thing I suspect), except for the old CiscoPro routers. **Don't stop looking and asking though, it's why we're all here... and all ears ;-) All the best! RE: Ping [7:61366]
This isn't a Cisco issue, but the byproduct of a missing "new" entry in the ARP table. You may know the layer 3 address for this new interface and the router may know how to route it (i.e. this subnet exists off of this interface), but it does not yet have the layer 2 address needed for final delivery. So- your first series of Ping packets defaults to inverse ARP, and if properly configured, the new interface is known. I think that's fairly close to the original description that I read somewhere years ago. The two terms seem to be used almost interchangeably these days, but it seems a distinction is worth making. RE: 2500 Flash - Read Only [7:57323]
If you are seeing read only @ the Sho Ver, then odds are you have run from FLASH IOS. The 2500 was initially a run from RAM device, but due to their limited memory of 16/16 have been written into more of a hybrid mode. What does this mean? Boot the router into boot mode (no rommon with this device). Once in boot mode, go to enable and erase flash. Once the FLASH has been erased, set an IP address and download the IOS of your choosing. Next, change the config-reg back to 0x2102 and reload the router. The new IOS code should appear and the FLASH should again appear as read only. All the best! RE: 2501 IOS Flash! [7:50512]
AGGG !!! Back to the very first post... if this router somehow is booting with a run from FLASH IOS, you cannot upgrade it in normal operating mode. The 2500 started many many years ago, with run from RAM IOS. Run from RAM meant the FLASH is more of a repository for the compressed IOS code and the router could not function until the IOS image decompressed when loading into RAM. This was the case with 11.3, where routers were delivered with 8 FLASH and 16 RAM. Today- the 2500 is so processor and memory limited, that FLASH now works like a hard drive. What portion of the IOS code is needed is loaded into FLASH. That's why 12.1, which is about when these guys went EOL, started with 16 FLASH and 8 RAM setups. Try breaking the boot (Cntrl Break @ the boot up) and loading IOS from ROM (boot mode) and keep in mind this process will not work without 11.0(10c) boot ROMs. All the best !!! RE: 2501 router with bad E0 ? [7:48707]
Place your switch SC0 or VLAN1 management address on the same subnet as the directly connected 2501 and make sure the 2501 is plugged into a default VLAN1 port. If you cannot ping the directly connected switch (using a patch cable, with no routing protocol enabled, no personal firewall to screw up the process, and IOS that is rather significant (11.3 or better, and not a notoriously bug-laden version)), I'd say you have a problem with either the port, cable, or transceiver. The 2501s do not sell for much on Ebay, I suspect an old Smartnet could be had reasonably also. Let us know how you make out !!! Did you try 2611(config)# no service-config. In other words, make sure you're in config mode when you enter the command. That may be obvious, but sometimes we miss the obvious. ;-) The router decides that it should try to go to a TFTP server after it SLARPs from another router. This is very common in labs, for example. If your 2611 was connected via a serial cross-over cable to another router that was already configured, your router can SLARP. From then on it decides to try TFTP. It's can be very annoying. RE: Router with a bad console...? [7:48228]
I suspect a bad console port is possible, but if this is a result of a config erase... I'd tend to think otherwise. RE: What to look for... [7:48092]
To check the validity of your training manuals, cross reference the CCO. Information here is less likely (IMHO) to contradict. Cisco says: Upper-layer processes use IEEE 802.2 services through service access points (SAPs). The IEEE 802.2 header begins with a destination service access point (DSAP) field, which identifies the receiving upper-layer process. In other words, after the receiving node's IEEE 802.2 implementation completes its processing, the upper-layer process identified in the DSAP field receives the remaining data. Following the DSAP address is the source service access point (SSAP) address, which identifies the sending upper-layer process. http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ito_doc/sdlcetc.htm http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/90/22.html All the best Phil -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Morgan Hansen Sent: Thursday, July 04, 2002 7:49 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: What to look for... RE: Cable Modem DHCP problem [7:47175]
When dealing with this type of circuit, think of your cable modem as the UNI interface. The router can/will negotiate DHCP signals dynamically (i.e. Lease, Renewal, Rebind), but this is in terms of a host. The information your 2514 is seeing, is the same info the cable modem would provide your directly connected Microsoft PC. This is what the DHCP command is allowing you to accomplish here, to gather predetermined DHCP information from the cable modem and not full negotiations with the DHCP server. In short- reboot the cable modem, then the router... and don't be surprised if your regain the same IP address, even though you're granted a brand new lease. All the best !!! RE: ISDN Simulator Question [7:45634]
2 issues off the top of my head... 1)The physically one router creating one full network (2 points) will not work- it's called IP address overlap and you'll see the errors when you begin to configure this. I have seen this many times within my own goofing-ups. 2)I'm almost positive your 4500 BRI interfaces are S/T and will require an NTI. A second ISDN router should not be a huge investment. RE: Mail Relay [7:45144]
Hmmm- mail relay is a basic function of most ISP and Web hosting services. Big picture- your DNS name space and map too IP (range) for your SMTP gateway must be listed in or accessible (resolvable) via Global DNS. This allows for the relay downstream toward your exchange server (assuming Microsoft). It all pretty much starts with where your MX (Mail Exchanger) transmit and receive records are pointed and what if any weights are applied in your DNS entries. I have studied this process and actually in the past have had to do a little design work here, but shy of breaking-out the books this is all I can seem to recall @ the moment. Topics for research would be DNS & BIND (specifically MX records), Send Mail, and Exchange (specifically where traffic is received). If vlan 101 on switch #1 fails its priority decrements by the default value (10 I think) switch #2 picks up on this when it recieves the next hello packet from switch #1, switch #2 than becomes the active switch, but sence there is no preempt on switch #2 it has no way of returning back to standby once switch #1 returns to its original state. This is assuming that hsrp operates the same on switches as it does on routers, if not than please disregaurd. I'm a little confused by configs I see in production that appear to be contrary to how I think HSRP works. What is the significance of the preempt statement on Switch #2 in this example below ??? Is it- without the preempt statement on the second switch (even though it has the lower priority), the HSRP priority would not change back if Switch #1 flapped a few times ??? ex: Switch #1 inter vlan 1 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0 standbye priority 255 preempt standbye IP 10.10.10.3 standby track vlan 101 Switch #2 inter vlan 1 10.10.10.2 255.255.255.0 standbye priority 254 standbye IP 10.10.10.3 standby track vlan 102 Thanks Phil Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=44762&t=44762 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Content Switches [7:44742]
Both- they call it "sandwich-ing the firewall." We had call for a design awhile back using the Cisco CSSs (ArrowPoints). The firewall portion called for us to use the CSSs to advertise the CheckPoint cluster IP address coming in and going out of the network. Instead of buying 1 or 2 fire breathing firewalls boxes, the virtual address/ cluster (along with CheckPoint's ability to share state across the cluster) allowed us to scale the firewall pool slower and more affordably. Internet/ASP--BGP Router--CSS--CheckPoint(s)--CSS--Intranet With the PIXs and Raptor(Symantec 6.5) boxes, we had to pass a hash within each packet (again coming in and going out of the network) so that the CSS receiving the traffic (after it had been processed through the firewall) could build a state table, allowing it to know which firewall packets were sent through and which firewall to send them back through(effectively- keeping track of state across the cluster). This is also an alternative to deploying PIXs in a primary and backup scenario, though it also means you don't get the backup firewall discount. Raptor/PIX Internet/ASP--Router--CSS-Raptor/PIX--CSS--Intranet Raptor/PIX Pretty high level, but this is pretty much how it works. Big IP, Nortel's recently purchased Alteon, RadWare, Rainfinity, StoneBeat, Cisco's CSS, they all will do the job for a price. All the best !!! The idea of > "build a network and they will come" simply does not work! CL: au contraire, mon ami! I give you the small brokerage firm I used to work for. Filled with unsophisticated users. When I arrived there was no WAN and no LAN to speak of - the so called LAN was dictated by the quote service vendor. I put in a real LAN with e-mail. That took off like crazy. I put in a real WAN with the branches able to send e-mail to eachother, and that took off even crazier. I put in an internet connection, and sure there was the usual crap with people checking out the adult entertainment, but you know, I had guys who could prior to my arrival couldn't tun their computers on going out and finding some realy nice investment sites and services that helped them tremendously in their business. At the time of my leaving, the LAN./WAM was starting to show signs of stress. In the course of my cetification pursuit, I have learned all the things I did wrong. But I gotta say, you have to start someplace, and it remains true that if the facilities exist, the user community will find a lot of ways to use those facilities. > > The context of the other book was that no network will function properly > if Layer 1 is not designed correctly. > > BTW, how many is too many? :-) > > Steve > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of > Priscilla Oppenheimer > Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2002 2:04 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: Network Design... L3 Between VLANS- no RSM or MSFC [7:44462]

Can anyone elaborate and/ or offer a few clues to get me researching in the right area ??? Thanks !!!
