2x2MB ccts Load Balanced + ISDN B/up [7:1837]

2001-04-25 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi guys, some assistance pls.

I need to connect 2 x 2MB ccts to a Router at each end, load balance
between them, (packet-by-packet, CEF), and also use 2 x ISDN lines to back
up the leased lines.
I am thinking of using static routes with equal admin distance for the 2 x
leased lines.
and using floating static routes,(high ad), to point to the ISDN line.
Also using multilink PPP for bundling more than one ISDN as and when
required.
Has anyone implemented this type of config, anyone got any better ideas of
doing this?
This is the first tiem I am trying this and I am unsure whether this will
work.

Quote from Routing TCP/IP Jeff Doyle, Pg 281:

Subnet masks carried with each route entry
Authentication of routing updates
Next-hop addresses carried with each route entry
External route tags
Multicast route updates

I remember these by memorising the word/abbreviation S.A.N.E.M.

Hope this helps

VOIP on CCIE Lab [7:3899]

2001-05-09 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi Guys,

Can anyone suggest the minimum hardware requirements to practise the VOIP
bits on the CCIE labs.

I am thinking of buying the cards, but there is so much out there and I am
truly confused.

My friend has suggested I buy myself 2 x 1750's with DSP and FXS cards and I
should be able to configure and test end-to-end voice connectivity. He said
this was the cheapest option for me. I am just looking for a 2nd opinion.

I have a 1000, 4 x 2500's and a 3620 router.

Any other ideas, I am on a pretty tight budget.

BGP - Load Balancing [7:3903]

2001-05-09 Thread Rashid Lohiya

My first BGP project and I am lost!

I am looking for a brief overview of how load balancing is configured using
BGP Multi-homed connections.

I thought a company with 2 ISP connections would use one link and have the
other available as backup only. But from what I understand from the client
request, they are expecting to load balance in some way over both links.

I don't need the specific configs, just the rough guidelines/pitfalls, so
that I can work out where to begin my research.

Any takers?

IP CEF - explanation required [7:4505]

2001-05-15 Thread Rashid Lohiya

I have been asked by my manager to add the ip cef command to the 3 x 2600
router configs, instead of configuring HSRP on two of them.

All I know about this is the syntax which I checked on the doc cd and what
it stands for: Cisco Express Forwarding.

I do not understand what this is actually doing, and how it works, is it
load balancing in some way?

Can anyone pls help, I hate putting commands on, which I do not know the
impact on the network/router/memory etc in a live environment.

CCIE Lab setup [7:4872]

2001-05-17 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi,

my currently lab setup at home.I need a little advice.

I am thinking of replacing my collection of 25xx routers with modular
routers to practise lab scenarios for CCIE.

Please can you advise whether it would be advisable to get rid of my 2511
and buy a 2-Port Asynch NM to give my my 16 Asych RJ45 feeds.

I am also thinking of buying a 4-Port Serial T1 Card for my 3600, to give me
6 Serial interfaces to practise most FR scenarios, instead of buying a
2521/2522.

coupled with my regular 2600 with FE, 1003, and 2 x 1750's 4v's (2xFXS Cards
& Bri) . I think I should have enough routers to practise even complex
scenarios.

I believe the modular routers will hold their value better than the 2500's.

Any thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated

E1 back-to-back RJ45 Link [7:4958]

2001-05-18 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi all,

I am trying to setup an E1 connection back-to-back, Cisco 7200 - Cisco 2600.
I wish to know which card to buy for the 2600 Router, that will give me 2MB
on RJ45 Presentation.

I have a card MultiChannel E1/PRI 120 OHM/RJ45 on the 7200 end, (does anyone
have a part no. for this?).

Do I now need a:

NM-CE1U - 1-port Channelized E1/ISDN-PRI balanced network module?
or a
NM-CE1B - 1-port Channelized E1/ISDN-PRI balanced network module?
or
is there something that gives E1 with CSU that I need, or maybe something
else altogether to fit into the 2600 router.

Also do I need a crossover cable or will a normal Cat5 RJ45/UTP cable do.

Thanks

Re: Dual Internet Routes [7:5028]

2001-05-18 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Why not have a second connection going to another ISP, using diverse routing
on the cct?

You will not have too many single points of failure, ie. the exchange, the
ISP, etc. etc.

You could load balance between the 2 connections and each router/cct would
provide redundancy for the other.

Pls. correct me if I am wrong in any way.

OT Looking for tech presentation tips [7:5111]

2001-05-19 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hey Guys,

I am a CCNP with 15 yrs of network experience, I am well travelled in the
course of my work.

I think I generally know what I am doing, but have great difficulty
explaining myself to more junior staff.

I can design/configure/troubleshoot networks and create accurate
diagrams/documents/reports etc.

As I am the Senior in my department, my boss is expecting me to help train
the 6 x new trainees/graduates that are in the Network department. I once
had to give a presentation and I was shaking and stuttering and I must have
seemed insecure and unconfident. I was lost for words and really stressed. I
was sweating and confused, I knew the answers to their questions, but I just
could not explain to them.

Any tips on how to overcome this?

Re: Study Materials! [7:5458]

2001-05-22 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Kareem,

Read something on Token Ring RIF Calculations
Doyle & Comer were very useful
Also read the old versions of CCNP books, because they have Appletalk, LANE
and Bridging.
There are a couple of Study guides around for this exam, I used the one by
QUE, CCIE Prep Study Guide, (or something like that). This just amalgamates
all the subjects into one book, handy for revision, but not really detailed
enough, (in my opinion).
You could download a free cramsession document, from brainbuzz to condense
your revision down to pocket-size.

Best of luck!

Shorcuts for Terminal Server [7:6310]

2001-05-29 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Anyone got the keystrokes/shortcuts for moving around a rack via a 2511
terminal server fluidly and effortlessly?

I know about Cntrl Shift 6 x to jump off a live session and reverse telnet
to another router.

How do I disconnect altogether, so that I do not keep on having to clear
line all the time?

Can I jump back on a router I have already opened a session with, without
having to type pw or clear line again?.

My Indian mates gave me a good idea to open up a different telnet session
for each router on my PC thus eliminating all the keystrokes and just use
the mouse to bring the live router to the forefront.
The only problem with this is that I am getting lazy and I am unsure whether
I will be allowed to use this technique in the lab. Any ideas?

Thanks

Telnet config for Lab over Internet [7:7250]

2001-06-05 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hey all!

I have a lab setup of 7 routers and a switch, some hubs, MAU's and an ISDN
simulator.

Can someone pls. help me set up my terminal server to be accessed over the
internet via telnet.

I am looking for sample configs and some sort of list of things to consider.

eg. security, firewall or access-list/class.
static or dhcp ip address, will I need to NAT
BGP or default route ?
Will 56k Modem access over asynch port be good enough for telnet in.
(I already have my Internet connection permanently on)
Will I need agreement/co-op from my ISP?
Will I have to have a web page to explain, display the rack?

Thanks

I did my CCNA V1.0 using the Learnkey CD's.

I enjoyed them and found them interesting, clear, concise and useful, but
not as detailed as using a book.
Good as a supplement to your main studying, ie. reading, taking practise

but not as a substitute to the real hard work.

Re: BGP for 2 T1's to one LAN [7:7511]

2001-06-07 Thread Rashid Lohiya

I am reading Bassam Halabi at the moment, this has the information you
require.

Also think about who's address space you are using? ie. one of the 2 ISP's?
or your own?.
If you are using one of the ISP's address block, then maybe you will need to
NAT on the other router? This might blow your load balancing out and
complicate the issue further.
As far as I know full routing tables will not run on a 2600, you will need a
3640 with a min 128MB Memory, pls. correct me if I am wrong. So you may have
to make do with default routes.
The 2 ISP routers will run IBGP between them and EBGP back to their
Internet/ routers. They will also have OSPF running.
You may need a 3rd router running OSPF using default-originate always with
equal cost paths to both ISP routers/T1's.
I think you will need your own AS, and a /30 Serial IP address from each
ISP.

I have not implemented this myself, so pls get 2nd opinion.

Pls. correct me if I have written complete rubbish, this is the way I have
understood the setup to be.

Re: How to create latency? [7:7313]

2001-06-09 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Do you thing I could a similare thing with a LAN Analyzer, generating a
whole load of traffic and directing it over the serial link.
I haven't tried this, just wondering.
If I overloaded the link in this way, I would expect packet drops and
retransmissions, hence I would expect some latency in my applications.

I could be wrong here. Let me know your thoughts

Re: I want to build CCIE lab in my home [7:7853]

2001-06-09 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Iyuri,

On top of what you already have, you will also need:

A router with one FE (10/100) Ethernet port for ISL/dot1q vlan trunking
2 x Routers with voice capabilities for the VOIP bits
a Cat 5002 would be nice for pracising VLAN's etc.
A router with 4 serial WAN ports to try out Frame Relay etc.
2 routers with ISDN capability with either an ISDN simulator or a real line.
I don't know about the ATM side of things
A LAN Analyzer Software on a PC would be useful to decipher packets etc.
I think you should be set.

btw I never did get FTP working on your server.

HSRP Query [7:7879]

2001-06-10 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Guys,

I need confirmation of a HSRP design.

I have 2 x Routers configured for HSRP on a LAN.

A packet is sent from a Firewall on the LAN to the HSRP virtual address, as
the (default gateway).
The packet reaches the active router, (highest priority).
It compares the packets destination address/subnet in its routing table.

A). Will it send the packet back on the LAN, (to the standby routers real
LAN interface address), if it finds that the standby router has a shorter
route to the destination, than itself?
Or
B). Will it ignore that fact and shoot it accross its own WAN link
regardless.

I haven't had time to lab this just yet, but I'm quite sure the answer
should be A.

2nd query is I understand that ICMP redirect is switched off by default if
HSRP is used, even if I was to switch this on, I was wondering if a standard
firewall would actually take notice of the redirect and send the next packet
to the router with the shorter path as advised by the ICMP redirect, rather
than to the statically set default gateway, pointing to the virtual HSRP
address.

Frame Relay Tunnel betwixt 2 routers [7:7883]

2001-06-10 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi all,

I read about extending a frame relay switch by using a tunnel over the
ethernet link. So I could have 2 routers joined up to make one frame relay
switch.

My routers are not accepting the command to route dlci over the tunnel
interface, but ok on serial.

tunnel interface is configured and up/up

int ser0
encapsulation frame-relay
frame-relay intf-type dce
clockrate 64000
frame-relay lmi-type ansi
frame-relay route 100 interface serial 1 200 - works ok
frame-relay route 500 interface tunnel 0 600 - This is rejected, doesn't
recognise tunnel.

I have tried different platforms, 3600/2600/2500/1700 etc.
and different IOS releases, 10-12

I saw this config in a doc called "resource guide for building a CCIE Lab".
The router was a 2501 running 11.3 so I don't understand why it will not
work for me.

Any hints would be appreciated.

BGP on 1005 & 1720 [7:7902]

2001-06-10 Thread Rashid Lohiya

I have been labbing a scenario, most of today, but when I got to my little
1005 and 1720 routers, it stopped the show.

I am unable to get bgp running on these units and I can't understand why.

I am ok on my ancient 2500's and newer 2600/3600.

Could it be some sort of IOS restrictions, although it recognises the bgp
part of the command and rejects my AS number.

conf t
router ? - response lists bgp as one of the options
router bgp - response - incomplete command
router bgp 22 - response - unknown routing protocol
router bgp ? - response <1-65535) autonomous system number.

any ideas?

Re: After CCNP what Next [7:9149]

2001-06-21 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Personally I did the CCIE Written exam and bypassed the CCDP, but now I
regret this, as I do not honestly believe I will be ready for the lab before
my 1 year expires. I will need to do the written exam again, before going
for lab.

If I had another chance, I would have done the CCDP first and waited until I
had good lab experience before doing the written exam, so that I could have
booked the lab straight after doing the written.

Oh Well! At least the company is paying for my exams.

Hey Jerel,

You have missed out some VOIP capability and to do ISL/dot1q VLAN trunking
you will need one FE Interface on a router.

Guys,

Pls. can someone let me know if I will be able to do most things necessary
for practising for the CCIE Lab exam with a Cat 5002, Supervisor Engine 1,
FE Blade, 4MB Flash, 20MB DRAM, SW version 2.2.3.

It is costing around 1375.00 GBP, (1800 USD). Is this a good price.

2xNM-1E-2W Cards in 1 router. [7:13208]

2001-07-21 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi Guys,

Anything stopping me having 2 x NM-1E-2W Cards installed in a Cisco 2610 or
3620?

ie. will this work ok?

I am thinking this may be a cheap option to have one router with 4 WAN ports
and 2 Ethernet Ports,
(as I already have some spare WIC-1T's).

Pls. let me know if this will work, or if I have missed something.

Thank you

New WIC 2T - Qurery [7:14951]

2001-08-05 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi,

I have just acquired a 2nd user WIC-2T Card for my 3600 Router, but it does
not have the regular 60pin interfaces, which I was expecting to see.

Instead it has 2 x smaller, thinner female interfaces with 2 nuts on each
end for the cable connector to screw into.

The card is marked WIC 2T, and the two interfaces are labeled Serial 0 and
Serial 1.

Has anyone else seen this type of interface?

Can anyone give me a cisco part number for the type of cable I would need?
Will I be able to connect each of these connectors to a DCE/DTE crossover
cable to connect to a regular 60pin connector?

Is this normal or is this some special or new type of card?

Pls. let me know

Thanks

I also have some spare Cisco equipment/cables, I may consider swapping for

CCIE Lab exam - booked twice [7:17310]

2001-08-26 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Guys,

Does anyone know whether one person can book the lab twice?

ie. 1 for April, 1 for June, thus allowing him to cancel and get a refund on
the second one if the first is failed.

In this way, the year long wait would not need to be endured if I was to
fail the first time around.

Hmm Triple booking, good idea feller!
I like your thinking! (Well at least one of us is thinking anyway).

And while your'e at it, some tea and cakes would not go amiss too.

Please excuse me for asking, (and of course for my glaring mistakes, I am a
burn-out from way back).

Oh well! back to the trouble-shooting.

DHCP Question [7:27380]

2001-11-26 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hey All,

I was trying to help a freind get his DHCP working, but got stuck.

He has a DHCP server set up across the WAN.

I know that routers drop broadcasts, so I thought I would be able to turn
the DHCP/UDP broadcasts into unicasts by providing an ip-helper address, on
the local ethernet pointing to the remote DHCP server, so I did, but this
did not work.

Secondly I tried putting on the ip dhcp-server a.b.c.d command, and thought
maybe this would point incoming traffic towards the DHCP server, but again
this did not work.

I even tried doing the old ip forward-protocol udp statement.

Then when I did a show run, I saw a no ip directed-broadcast statement, on
the ethernet so I enabled that, but still no difference.

Pls. Can someone give me a brief nudge in the direction I should be going
next, or point out where I am going wrong.

The DHCP server is working OK! I can ping it from the routers and can get
addresses from the local network.

The PC's are fine, waiting for an IP Address.

My brain is tired and any hints would be appreciated.

Regards,

Rashid Lohiya
