Spanning tree has given me more business than anything else these last few
weeks...it's amazing what enabling port-fast can do for your
macintosh/novell network!!!

:)

-Brad
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message

Your understanding is correct, as far as the information you've given
goes.
However, presumably you are running multiple VLANs in this setup?
If you are using per-VLAN spanning tree, you have a separate spanning tree
for
each VLAN. You can set 6500a to be the root bridge for some of the VLANs,
and
6500b to be the root bridge for the other VLANs. Then, although each
particular
spanning tree uses one switch, your total traffic will be balanced across
both.
If one falls over, spanning tree for the affected VLANs swaps across to
the
 remaining 6500.

Anyway, whether it's a waste of dollars to have a switch sitting there in
case
of failure depends on how much the failure will cost you if the second
switch
 isn't there :-)

I have a question on Spanning tree across the core layer. If I have switch
stacks that look like the following diagram:

 292429242924292429242924292429242924
 292429242924292429242924292429242924

 500050005000500050005000500050005000

 6500a6500b

If I have two links going to each 6500 from the 5000s and the 6500a switch
is the root bridge, then is 6500b switch even going to be used. From my
understanding of STP, all traffic is going to go through the root bridge
in
the even of redundant paths. If this is true then (not that I am downing
fault tolerance) it is a waste of a switch that costs thousands of dollars
just to sit there and wait for the 6500a switch to go down. Am I getting
this correct or is there a way to setup STP so both 6500s get used with
 about the same load?

A quick question in regard to "reverse telnet".

 I'm using a 2511 as a terminal server, and I've
defined some host names, pointing to a loopback
ip address and a line number on the router, so
that I can reverse telent to other devices
 console ports.

Here is my question, if I TELNET to the 2511, I
am not able to reverse telnet out to the other
deviceds using only the "hostname", such as
 "router1", for example.
Instead, I have to type "telnet router1" to get
 it to work.

However, when I'm directly connected to the 2511
console port, I can reverse telnet to the other
devices just using the "hostname", such as
 "router1".

Is this the way it is suppossed to work? That to
be able to only use the hostname to initiate a
reverse telnet session, you have to be directly
connected to the console port of the 2511?

 Any ideas would be appreicated.

 Thanks!

problem I went to get a new image of CCO. I went through the procedure to
add the new image, however, every new image I have tried reveals an invalid
checksum as well. It does state the checksum read and the one expected. So,
I basically viewed all images available looking for any that might have the
checksum that is expected by the router only to find none.

Does anyone have any insight?

2520 - $1200 TOTAL for the router and S/H (S/H in the cont. US) I can take

According to the Cisco web site, the equipment in use for the R/S exam
 currently is:

 Equipment List
 * 2500 series routers
 * 2600 series routers
 * 3600 series routers
 * 4000 and 4500 series routers
 * 3900 series token ring switches
 * Catalyst 5000 series switches

One might use a bit of indirection in determining specifics by reading the
blueprint. For example, the blueprint calls for voice over IP. One might
guess that the 26xx and/or the 36xx have some voice modules.

As for where you can get this stuff, everyone here knows the answer (
right
 Brad? )

Does this mean ATM? Is is possible for me to

difficult for the ISP to have Northpoint reconfigure

Just a question. If your employer had agreed to pay for one and only
one

use

thinking CATM or CVOICE since, i don't get much of a chance to put my

Fanglo, you need to have pins 1,2,-,4,5 on one end go to 4,5,-,1,2 on the

Use the console cable you get with the routers (at least that's what I
use),
and if you use HDLC or PPP on the routers and config the DSU right it will
 work like a charm.

You guys are too sweet! :) Thx!

I'll be posting another kit here in a few days. Im still trying to put
together a nice package for you CCIE goers. Ive got a few extra 2520's if
anyone needs a frame switch.

Marc Russell's Rack #3 should have ATM in about 10-12 days. I'll post
something here when it happens, and Im sure Marc will let his current
customers know. He also just added a new lab to his package of labs,
Lab#15. It's got some VoIP and IPSec on there.

Thanks again to everyone who's already purchased kits from me! If anyone
else out there in groupstudy land needs some gear, you know where to go:

 Yeah well I have,

The gear I ordered arrived within 5 days of placing the order , all
beautifully packaged etc. I would also like to point out that I live in
New
Zealand , and if it wasn't for people like Brad Ellis, gaining any Cisco
Certs would be an extremely expensive exercise given that there isn't
exactly a plethora of used Cisco equipment available here.
Anyone that creates a more level playing field is OK by me.

 Rgrds

Although I never purchased anything from Brad, I would say if he can offer
equipments to the list at a fair price(which he did), why not? Concerning
he do business in this list, well, frankly speaking, he did contribute to
this list, and some of the tech people within the list. Most importantly,
he can help us to get the low-priced equipments, plus he is able to make
money out of that. Then, we are in 'WIN-WIN' scenario, why not?

Am I affiliated (sp) with CCBootCamp? Yup, sure am! I thought they are

a good thing???

This list is about certifications and studying. What's a better way to
study than with terrific labs and a rack of your own??? Did I mention,
that's what I did to get my CCIE?

Meaningful goal in life: Help others pass their CCIE. I know it was a

subscribe to this list. What's wrong with that?

Does that help? Let me know if you have anymore questions. If you need a

I have seen posts for the last year asking if it was possible to
use a dual Ethernet Cisco router (2514 for example) with
MediaOne. Until now the answer to this question was no,
because the Cisco routers would not accept a DHCP lease
on an Ethernet interface. I just successfully tested IOS 12.1.(2)T
in the lab. The following is a basic NAT overload configuration
 for use with MediaOne.

*** You can not use any other IOS for this including IOS 12.1.(3) ***

 config t
ip nat inside source list 1 int e0 overload
 access-list 1 permit 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255

 int e0
 ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
 ip nat inside

 int e1
 ip address dhcp
 ip nat outside

Set your IP address somewhere between 10.1.1.2 - 10.1.1.254
with a subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and your default gateway to
10.1.1.1 For those of you who know anything about Cisco you
can also program the router to act as a DCHP server for the LAN
but that is beyond the scope of what Iam trying to explain here.

Re: 2500 - Doesn't accept console input

use a computer running Windows NT. The hyperterm in Win98/95 has some bugs.

 All,

I picked up a used 2501, but I'm having some problems. I can see it
boot up and it looks ok, but it doesn't accept any keystrokes from the
console port. Hyperterm settings are ok, no problems with same
configuration on other 2500s. I can break into ROM monitor mode, but then
cannot enter anything again at the prompt. I tried taking out both the
flash and the ram, relying on the ROM IOS and the 1 Mb of system board
RAM,
but it made no difference. Can anyone think of anything else to try
before
I return it? I'm going to attempt to view it's IP address from cdp nei
det,
but without a password, I'm probably stuck again. Any ideas?

 Thanks,

Re: routername(boot)

2000-07-08 Thread bellis

Ken,

It sounds like your router is sick. Try checking it's temperature with SHOW
CUP and see if it's over 100.

!-start-
en
conf t
config-reg 0x2102
exit
reload
y
!-end---

copy and paste the above into your router.

What you need is a couple of routers, a couple crossover cables, and you're
ready to rock. Ive gotten several people all the way through their CCNP
