Re: CCIE salary

2001-02-27 Thread info

Ive got to say that 65k for a CCNP in the DC market,
as originally quoted, seems low to me. I'm one and
I make significantly more. One way to bear out my
position is to go to dice.com and search for CCNP and DC
or CCNP and VA. You will see that in DC the average
rate is closer to 80kwith experience up to 100k.

Now, a CCIE canwith some experience start at
90k and pretty rapidly bounce around til they hit
130k in a short period of time...1-2yrs?

Re: Off Topic: Any interest in new Sniffer Certification?

2001-03-07 Thread info

Eh, big deal. The original post's header indicated it was
Off topic. Plenty of threads on this list are about non Cisco
certifications. Protocol Analysis is a skill reserved for experts.
Some people on this list are CNX certified which is a certification
being superceded by the new cert program.it will be interesting
to see how they react to the new program.
Therefore the post has relevance to the list. Even if it came
from Sniffer's Marketing team, it wouldnt change that.

.personally, I think protocol analysis is going to be extremely
important in Wireless environments as a security measure.

Re: Reverse telnet for terminal server in lab exam

2001-03-14 Thread info

Hate to say it butthe easiest solution is to not press
return. On a terminal server, you only have to know
3 commands:

1. ctrl-shft-6 X brings you back the TS prompt
2. sh sessshows you connections are in use (reconnect by
entering connection #)
3. sh line shows which lines are in use

...if you think about itnot pressing return is saving you a
keystroke

...suppose you did find a workaround to this issue as you are
seekingthen
you'd just get in the habit of pressing returnbut of course when you
came
across a standardly configed termserveryou'd be in the same boat
you are now--with bad habits slowing you down. Form good habits and
you'll have no worries wherever you golab exam or otherwise

EIGRP and Unequal Cost Load Balancing

2000-12-18 Thread info

I want to learn as much as possible about unequal cost load
balancing in eigrp. Can anyone point me to a white paper or
book that goes into great depth on this topic?

I have a lot of site offices with PVCs to Headquarters and
Backup Headquarters. The link to HQ is typically twice
the size of the one to the Backup site. And the pipe between
HQ and the Backup site is very very large. I was wondering if
I might notice any file download improvements at my sites
where there are 128k links to HQ and 64k links to the Backup
site. Has anyone done any testing of this EIGRP feature enough
to strong feelings one way or the other about it?

What commands would I use to prove that it is working? What should
I know about the difference between per destination and per packet
load balancing?

Basically, I want to be an expert on this topic. Does it come up in the
CCIE lab exam by chance?

troubleshooting a 2520 boot problem

I have a 2520 router that when it boots the OK LED stays lit but the
console produces no indication of boot activity. THe above articles
suggest checking the power supply, so I tried a known working PS
and got the same outcome.

I tried reseating the chips on the board...and even booting without them.

Seems like it must be a bad motherboard. Anyone have any other

ISDN backup for increased bandwidth

2000-10-02 Thread info

We have a site with a quirky FRelay burst pattern. Although
they burst very rarely, the uers seem to all be all too aware of the
times when it is happening. Our usage numbers dont justify
bumping up their CIR so I've been investigating alternatives.

I was wondering if anyone out there uses ISDN backup
to provide more bandwith when the FRelay circuits get
saturated. This seems like it might be a good solution
since it could help out during episodes of bursting.
But is it practical financially? How much more expensive
if an ISDN connection than a Frame Relayat 128k CIR?
This particular site would be calling from Boston to
Santa Clara.

Any insights, comments, etc are greatly appreciated. If
I get enough responses, I'll post a summary.

Bruce Caslow

2000-10-26 Thread info

I just registered to take a class with the company
that employs Bruce Caslow's teaching services;
Mentor Technologies.

I was wondering if any of you have had the opportunity
to take his lab exam prep course. The woman I
spoke with estimated that 80% of the people
who take the course pass the lab exam on the
first try.

I am mildly skeptical of that but not enough to
not attend the class.

In any case, has anyone had experience with
this group Mentor Technologies? Is Caslow
the best instructor there? I've been told that
all the other instructors are his students. I
was told they allow you to stay in the classroom
practicing stuff as long as you wantinto the
wee hours of the night if necessary.

On a similar note: has anyone had excellent results
from a class from another vendor?

On an unrelated note: thanks so much to all who
responded to my query about bandwidth statements
on frame relay links. Definitely helped alot!

I think your project would benefit greatly from Chapter 4 of Caslow's book

you: avoid mismatched OSPF hello parameters by setting

point-to-multipoint.

The rest is quite an enjoyable read. Cory, if you don't already have

Subnet Calc/Database tool?????

2000-09-07 Thread info

There are plenty of subnet calculators out there. There
are also lots of programs designed to manage your
DHCP and DNS services.

But I need a tool that calculates subnets and then keeps
them in a Database by siteone that generates reports
that rapidly display where our IP subnets are located.

Right now, we use Excel Spreadsheets to keep track of
the subnets we've created. We've undergone alot of
growth and now its time to get something better, more
automated.

I need a tool that makes it easy for me to see which network
is in which site office, such as Cleveland. And vice versa, when
we open a new site office, I'd like it to automate the subnetting
process. So that, if I open a site with 30 users, I put in 30
and it kicks out a subnet containing enough space to accomodate
those many users plus room for servers/network equipment.
If this could then generate network maps toothat would be...
...almost too good to be true.

I don't want this thing to interface with or operate DNS or DHCP services.
I simply want it to subnet and keep track of the subnets.

Can anyone please, PLEASE, please recommend a tool that
does all of the above? I'd hate to hack one out myself in PERL
since I have better things to do like study for the CCIE written.
